Scout Report – Manuel Lanzini

Last week, West Ham made Argentinian midfielder Manuel Lanzini their seventh summer signing, with the 22-year-old joining on a season-long loan from UAE Arabian Gulf League side Al-Jazira, with an option to make the move permanent.

New Hammers boss Slaven Bilic was glowing in his praise of Lanzini, nicknamed “The Jewel”, and likened the new acquisition to a certain Man City playmaker:

“I watched him two years ago and I wanted to take him to Besiktas, but it was difficult. Now, the chance has come to get him, he’s going to help us a lot as he will add even more creativity in the crucial parts of the pitch. At the age of 20, he was given the No 10 jersey at River Plate who, with Boca Juniors, are a massive club of course. He’s not very strong but he rides challenges, he doesn’t go down – so I hope he could be big for us. There are deep playmakers like [Andrea] Pirlo or [Luka] Modric or you have playmakers between the lines up front like Silva. He’s more like him but he can play in all positions behind the strikers.”

THE HISTORY

Having come through the youth system at River Plate, Lanzini made his senior debut as a 17-year-old in a 1-0 win over Tigre in August 2010. He made 22 appearances for Los Millonarios during the 2010/11 season, although he failed to find the back of the net. Lanzini then spent the 2011/12 campaign on loan at Brazilian side Fluminese, where he made 37 appearances in all competitions, scoring five goals, and helped them win the Carioca in 2012.

Upon his return to River Plate ahead of the 2012/13 season, Lanzini was handed the coveted number ten shirt, worn by the likes of Ariel Ortega, and went on to provide eight goals and two assists in 26 league appearances before stepping up his creativity the following year, delivering five goals and nine assists from 41 outings in all competitions.

In 2014, Lanzini joined Al-Jazira, and scored eight goals in 24 league appearances alongside former Juventus and Roma forward Mirko Vucinic, helping secure a second-place finish in the league.

Lanzini has also been capped four times for Argentina at under-20 level, but has yet to earn a call-up to the senior side.

THE PROSPECTS

Although Bilic has opted for 4-4-2 on occasion during the summer, the Hammers are expected to line up in a 4-2-3-1 for the season ahead. The Croatian primarily employed that formation during his time at Besiktas and rolled out such a system for last weekend’s trip to Charlton.

This would certainly enhance Lanzini’s prospects of finding a place in West Ham’s starting XI, with the young Argentine taking up one of the places alongside fellow new signing Dimitri Payet in the three attacking midfield slots behind a lone striker. This would see the likes of Enner Valencia, Matt Jarvis, Morgan Amalfitano and Mauro Zarate battle it out for the final berth, with Diafra Sakho looking favourite to lead the line.

In terms of match sharpness, though, the new boy has conceded he’s a little behind his team-mates, which indicates he may be eased into life in the top flight until his fitness is up to speed for the demands of the Premier League:

“First of all, I want to settle here, this is a very difficult and competitive league. It’s then about being at the same level as my teammates and getting into the starting XI as quickly as I can. I have already spoken with the manager. I told him I was looking forward to starting training, to getting fit and getting up to speed with my colleagues.”

Certainly, once he’s fully fit, Lanzini – at a price of just 5.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), could warrant some consideration should he live up to Bilic’s expectations and establish himself as a first-team regular at Upton Park. At this point, though, Payet (7.5) and Sakho (6.5) look the strongest options right now, with the former – who created more scoring opportunities than any other player in Europe’s top five leagues last term – also handed dead-ball duties by Bilic.

Judging by his manager’s comments, Lanzini is clearly a favourite of Bilic’s and the Hammers’ new coach Julian Dicks has also been suitably impressed by what he’s seen in training.

Whilst the Hammers’ first three away matches (ars, liv, mci) are hardly enticing, their first four fixtures at Upton Park pit them against Leicester, Bournemouth, Newcastle and Norwich in the opening seven Gameweeks, suggesting Bilic’s side may well deserve our Fantasy attention. For now, Lanzini looks one to monitor but once he’s up to speed, the Argentine may well emerge as one of the strongest options in the budget midfield bracket.

I've been using this website for years but just signed as a paid member for the first time. Looks like there's plenty there to keep me busy!

Does anyone know where the stats are pulled from for new players? I was particularly looking at Payet compared to others and wondered how his stats are created considering he was plying his trade in a lesser league.

Sterling and Walcott are both explosive options, but each have some risk to them. Better to go with only one, and have a 'safer' mid (Ozil/Yaya). Or just go the all explosive option with both?

    Schmeichel (Schwarzer)
    Azpilicueta Mertesacker Mings (Williams, Targett)
    Hazard Walcott ..... Bolasie (Milner)
    Rooney Defoe Wilson

8.5 to spend, only needed for 3 weeks as will likely be swapped for Sterling for GW4
    Best option?

    A) Mata
    B) Ozil
    C) Someone else

    RMT please,

Obviously with 11 days to go I'll probably change evryone, but here's where I am now.

    Butland / Krul
    Azpilicueta / Mertesacker / Alderweireld / Huth / Turner
    Hazard / Sterling / Ozil / Milner / Wanyama
    Rooney / Lukaku / Sakho

    0.5 ITB

Questioning whether to downgrade Alderweireld to a 4.5 and upgrade Wanyama. Milner / Henderson is tricky. Lukaku change for Benteke after WK1 potentially.

    Thoughts? Cheers

Milner is a better pick i think, best chances created per min played of all PL players last season and was quality FPL material when playing CM for Villa

Not sure about Krul - Butland and Ruddy rotate superbly

Is Turner nailed? Not sure he's even gonna play

Apart from that, looks gooooooood (if you're happy with Lukaku's abysmal fixtures)

Thanks! Yep, depsite Henderson potentially being on pens think Milner may be the mid-price option to have.

Good point re. Krul - worry is Norwich may get spanked every week.

Turner 5th choice 4.0 defender - not sure which 4.0 is nailed on?

Lukaku has frustrated me and many more before, but for first game week (and he's scored lots in preseason) may be worth a punt - then Benteke probably, or Giroud.

Second striker hardest to pick this season I think

        1. Tadic is the new Eriksen

I don't think Newcastle will be much better tbh, they were dreadful at end of last season. You never really know, I'm just following the only thing we can be sure of - the fixtures.

No 4.0s are nailed on, not at this stage anyway

I agree, there's nothing between 6.5 and 8 million - would love it if Remy got a transfer

Agreed on Remy. Think Mourinho's keeping him though.

Benteke has the potential to be the one to have at 8.5. But sneaky feeling Lukaku vs. Watford first up will get goals.

After WK2, Everton's fixtures get grim...

No Hazard is a risk but you have Costa and Fab

      No Utd cover at all

      Sterling is a risk.

Caz will be playing deep and may not be on set pieces.

3 Chelsea, Def, Mid, For. 2 Arsenal, Mid Forward, 2 Liverpool (with their fixtures is punty)

If Man U or City open up against Spurs and Brom you will lose ground.

Quite possibly, but Sherwood seems to be shipping 'em in by the crate load at the moment, with all that lovely Tekkers cash. Anyone's guess what the squad and his first starting XI might look like, a week Saturday.
Also, I'm not entirely sure about the appeal or value of OoP defenders. Moreno had regular starts on the left wing for Liverpool in the second half of the season, but for the same money or less you'd have found plenty of defenders with better returns over the same period. That combined with the large number of attacking wingbacks in the game anyway, I'm not sure that a Villa defender has that much appeal.

no, it's because you're asking a question with Aguero in the picture which changes the dynamics completely.

Aguero has to be in there if you're going with him from the start. No option of going without Aguero if you think he will get substantial minutes GW1.

    Hi All,

    A) Deeney, defenders - 4.5 + 4.0

    or

    B) Graham, Clyne + 4.0 (def)

Graham would essentially be bench fodder

    Cheers guys

So this is how it stands at present. I think I will have a non playing 4 million keeper at the start of the season at least unfortunately.

---Butworld - Hennessey or some other 4 million keeper---
    ---------Mertesacker - Cedric - Lescott - Mings - Prodl--------
    ----------------Sterling - Walcott - Depay - Mane-----------------
    ---------------------Rooney - Sakho - Costa------------------------

    What do you think?

I'm going to embellish an earlier point. Pulis spending £8m on Chester shows he's following the same pattern he established at Stoke.

In his final three years at Stoke, only Liverpool spent more (net spend) on transfers. Let that sink in for a second. The spending wasn't done through expensive marquee signings, it was a procession of slightly over-priced mediocre players in the £4m-£9m range, with little or no resale value.

It's a big part of why he was sacked: all that money spent yet turgid football and mid-table obscurity to show for it. And it's why he left Palace - he wanted to do the same there and they wouldn't let him.

I feel sorry for West Brom fans.

It does suggest Chester will play though and they will continue to have a good defence.

Oh sure, for FPL purposes it's all gravy. But it won't go so great for the club.

He's a solid defender with a couple of seasons of premier league experience under his belt. That counts for something but I agree, £8m is too much.

My team is looking pretty good in my opinion but interested to hear some criticism on it, want it to be good come the start of the season

    Butland - Schmeichel
    Clyne - Azpi - Cedric - Huth - Targett
    Hazard - Sterling - Ozil - Ritchie - Johnson(Norwich)
    Rooney - Benteke - Sakho

What are peoples opinions of my team? Very happy with Sakho, Ritchie and Johnson for rotation, will get me some points in favorable fixtures. Not happy with Targett but I am strapped for cash after the addition of Rooney who I am still unsure of. Benteke is another risk due to new style of play and Sterling may be changed to Walcott at least till City's fixtures are better. Any criticism is welcome, thank you for any help!

Goalies - Good (Poss Ruddy instead of Schmeic but good ntl)
Def - Pretty good, if only you could get 0.5 for targett)
Mid - Strong , good rotation with cheap mids
Striker - Strong - Rooney yep, Sakho is mine so sick 😛 and Benteke is a risk but i think he will be good

      8/10

95% of the time you can get away with a non playing defender is the 5pts you get over the season for him worth an extra half mil. Don't know why teams give it too much thought. Targett will get a couple of games. I think Saylor, if fit will get 50% gametime.

What do people reckon about Arsenal's mid conundrum in terms of nailed oness? Excluding Coquelin.

    I think:

    2. Ozil
    3. Ramsey
    4. Cazorla
    5. Wilshere
    6. Ox

So here it is, the team that I really do feel I might be settled on for the start of the season.

Plan is to rotate Mings and Jenkinson for the first 6-8 weeks and will most likely play Deeney every week from GW2 onwards in place of Huth

All opinions and thoughts are welcome...

    Rooney Benteke

They normally appear a little into the season.

And FPL are definitely getting better at labelling players despite the still present inconsistency with wide players (e.g Rodriguez as a forward but Mane as a mid).

    Hello everyone!

Mignolet - Schmeichel ( Rotation is good, LFC have good home fixture list until GW 7 and Mignolet manage 14 CS last campaign)

Azpi - Cedric - Moreno/Sakho - O'shea - 4.0 ( Need to be in the CFC defence. Soton have good fixtures and a good football team. Moreno/Sakho cheapest way into LFC defense, home fixtures are good and trying to get double CS with Mignolet. S'land have ok fixture list, but need to keep an eye on who will start.

    Hazard - Walcott - Depay - Mane - Anya

Rooney - Benteke - Wilson ( Wilson decent budget player - Bournemouth will play attacking football and have good fixture list)

I will probably do 2 FT after GW2. Downgrading Hazard to Fabregas and upgrading Rooney to Aguero.

    Please, any comments..

You do not want to be downgrading Hazard - downgrade Depay / Mane / Walcott to whoever is the hot 6.5 mid to fund Aguero.
