Scout Notes

Scout Scribbles – International Round Up

Sergio Aguero scores twice and provides three assists as Argentina thrash Bolivia. Mesut Ozil recovers from illness to turn out for Germany, Anthony Martial is handed his senior debut for France, whilst Gareth McAuley bags a brace for Northern Ireland.

Aguero Runs Riot against Bolivia

Sergio Aguero played a part in five of Argentina’s goals in a 7-0 home win over Bolivia last night. The City striker scored twice and laid on three assists before being replaced on 80 minutes. Everton new boy Ramiro Funes Mori played from start to finish in the heart of defence, keeping the likes of United’s Marcos Rojo, along with City pair Martin Demichelis and Nicholas Otamendi, on the bench.

The Scout Says: Having struggled for form in the opening four Gameweeks, Aguero’s display suggests he’s building up his match sharpness over the international break after returning to training later due to his Copa America exertions. A disappointing blank at home to Watford last time out took his tally to one league goal so far and has persuaded over 15,000 FPL managers to sell the 13.2-priced frontman since the end of Gameweek 4, but last night’s showing suggests they could regret that decision. Still sitting in over 32% of sides, there’s plenty of reason for optimism once he returns to domestic action, as the league leaders prepare for a superb run of opponents (cpl, WHM, tot, NEW, BOU, mun, NOR, avl) in the next eight Gameweeks.

Martial Handed Les Bleus Debut

Anthony Martial’s week to remember continued last night after the United new boy earned his debut during France’s 1-0 win over Portugal. Martial was initially named amongst the subs but replaced Karim Benzema up front with 16 minutes remaining.

The Scout Says: Whilst he failed to get in the goals, last night’s step up in status will surely be a confidence boost for the youngster ahead of his debut for the Old Trafford outfit. Didier Deschamps is clearly a big fan, calling him “a huge talent” and now looks set to integrate the youngster into the France senior squad ahead of next year’s Euro 2016. The French now host Serbia on Monday evening and Martial could even be poised for a first start as he looks to stake a claim for a starting berth for the Red Devils ahead of next weekend’s home encounter with bitter rivals Liverpool.

Ozil Back in Action

Having missed Arsenal’s Gameweek 4 trip to Newcastle, Mesut Ozil recovered from illness to play the full 90 minutes in Germany’s 3-1 win over Poland last night.

The Scout Says: The playmaker’s return is good news for the Gunners, who have yet to fully fire in the first four Gameweeks. Arsene Wenger’s side have managed just three goals, with Ozil earning an assist, though one look at the underlying stats indicates they’ve been more than unlucky – Arsenal lead the way for shots (83) and efforts inside the box (56) but have found the net with just 3.6% of their chances. Ozil has been sold by over 43,000 FPL managers since missing out at St James’ but now looks set to return to the first-team fold ahead of a mixed schedule which pits the north London club against Stoke, Chelsea, Leicester and United in the next four rounds of fixtures.

McAuley Double Earns Ireland the Points

Gareth McAuley bagged a brace for Northern Island as they moved to the top of their Euro 2016 qualifying group courtesy of a 3-1 away win over the Faroe Islands. West Bromwich Albion team-mate Chris Brunt turned provider for McAuley’s second header of the night.

The Scout Says: McAuley’s brace arrives at a time where the Baggies are prepared for a strong run of fixtures (SOU, avl, EVE, cry, SUN, nor, LEI) in the upcoming Gameweeks. Owing to injuries and rotation, predicting the exact composition of Tony Pulis’ backline has been a futile endeavour so far this season. Craig Dawson (5.0) has been the only ever-present among their full roster of defenders, starting the season at centre-back, before shifting over to right-back to replace James Chester. Brunt, who recovered from a hamstring problem in time for last night’s match, looks set to claim control of the left-back berth with Joleon Lescott out of the picture, which leaves two centre-back slots up for grabs. McAuley and Jonas Olsson have partnered up for the West Midlanders’ previous three match-ups yet the arrival of Jonny Evans (4.8) looks bad news for the latter, given that McAuley has been selected for every league match he’s been available for by Pulis. Although West Brom have shipped six goals in their last two home ties – albeit against Chelsea and Manchester City – two clean sheets in the last three suggests they are rediscovering the resilience that served up 16 shut-outs in the season gone by.

Long in the Goals

Shane Long nodded home the final goal as the Republic of Ireland recorded a 4-0 win over Gibraltar, having replaced man of the match Robbie Keane at the 71-minute mark.

The Scout Says: It’s been a tough start domestically for the Southampton striker, who has been named in the first XI in only one of the opening four Gameweeks. With Dusan Tadic and Sadio Mane excelling on the flanks in a 4-2-3-1 set-up against Norwich last time out, and lone striker Graziano Pelle also netting against the Canaries, Long looks unlikely to break into Ronald Koeman’s starting line-up anytime soon. A testing run of upcoming matches (wba, MUN, SWA, che) is likely to deter most from considering the Saints’ regulars, though potential suitors may wish to revaluate Southampton’s main men from Gameweek 9 onwards, with a view to capitalise on a favourable run of matches (LEI, liv, BOU, sun, STO) thereafter.

Id say the whole country want Galway to win. I even know a few Kilkenny fans who agree it would be better for the sport if Galway won it. Will be tough going but if they can reach the heights they did in the semi final, they have a decent chance.

It can be dangerous, but it is very physical. Would see some soccer players pretending to be hurt after a slight tap and think they wouldnt last one minute on a hurling field. The intensity in the finals each year is unreal. But at the same time, the skill at the top level is very impressive.

Hurling is a great sport to watch, highly recommended to those who've never seen it -was only available on TG4 until last seasons share to SKY. I have always been a Tip fan as my best buddy is Tip, this weekend i'll be for Galway! (I'm Welsh, so have no ties)

Why are people picking Evans (assuming this is WBA) when he isnt guaranteed to start?

Prefer Monreal over Koscielny for 0.5m less.

Youve probably missed the price on Mahrez otherwise would suggest him over Puncheon, allowing you to downgrade Vardy to Wilson. Your midfield is too light and patchey IMO.

is elliott stoke reserve? if no, take him out of there, pointless

defence is fine, but probably 1m too much for me. I'd downgrade one of evans or cedric to a 4m, or two 4.5m's - you're always going to play kol and kos

      I like the attack

I loathe that midfield - I think pedro is fine, although chelsea are not in form and I cannot see the logic for not having a city midfielder

puncheon is a bit neither here not there and has evil, evil fixtures

westwood is fine as 4.5m bench fodder, but that means you're playing redmond every game, which is probably suicide

your problem in the midfield, like so many other peoples, is sanchez. He just isn't worth that money. Downgrade him to a ramsey or an ozil and you've got a whopping 2.5m to upgrade redmond and puncheon

sanchez - one double figure haul in 17 matches - that is just not 11m form, his price is a joke

      1. Elijah's Wood
        • 9 Years

I agree with your points but this is the first time ive heard someone on this site to advise against Sanchez, and i have to agree. I feel the only reason Sanchez became an essential last season is because Giroud remained injured for over half the season so was pushed out of position. Granted its the first month of FPL but Sanchez doesnt look like the same player, maybe Wenger is not allowing him to play as he did last season.

disagree with your opinion on Sanchez, bear in mind he was back late after the Copa America. However, downgrading to Ramsay is a good idea to fund upgrades to redmond and puncheon.

      3. Manamongst
        • 13 Years

Ramsey is not in good form...forcing things and on the edge of being dropped. Ozil, is the way forward if you must downgrade...

My only admonition is, when Sanchez starts finding the net the price will be out of your range...which I will love, so you won´t see me telliing people not to drop him.

I would advise Sanchez to DeBruyne and keep the change handy.

I would be surprised if he didn't start personally! As you say, it depends on goals - Silva scored 12 last season, which was his best return in the PL. However, with Sterling and De Bruyne both coming in and offering more attacking threat, I would guess that there will be less emphasis on Silva getting forward to score goals, and instead he will play a tad deeper as City's most creative player, providing assists for Sterling, De Bruyne and Aguero ahead of him. De Bruyne is a better player than Sterling, and so that leads me to think that De Bruyne has the potential to be City's best midfielder. Although all speculation for the moment!

He will be a part of City's best 11 I think this year, but I think it would be slightly harsh for him to walk straight into the team based on the fact that the team has won four out of four. Don't change a winning team as they say. Its the same reason Otamendi wont start against Palace cause it would be unfair on Mangala or Kompany who have four clean sheets. I agree KDB has serious potential on the City team, he will play instead of Navas I think for City's biggest matches. I think he may also start behind the striker at times to give Silva a rest. There are so many options at the moment its unreal. It may become more difficult to predict from a fantasy football point of view though.

I agree with you, but if you were Pellegrini, would you play KDB or Navas? Navas didn't score a goal last season in the PL, so I think it's pretty obvious that you'd choose KDB, even though Navas has played pretty well in the first four matches.

Being honest if I was picking the team, I would make one change to the team that started against Watford and thats Nasri in for Navas. Bring KDB off the bench. But in saying that the Champions League match the following Tuesday may have a bit more of an influence.

Good point about rotation - the best midfield option could just be whoever is most nailed on.

It could be. Some weeks the PL match will take priority and the stronger team will be in that but other times a Champions League match may be considered harder and so some players will be rested for the PL match. It might happen that predicting the City line up becomes harder this season.

I have not seen De Bruyne play in Germany all I know he was playing in Silva's position in Germany and will now be on the wing . Sterling scored last week, has excellent fixtures and is proven . I think I will hold Sterling for now and see what happens

This. Sterling is playing great at the moment. He is a great addition to the City team and his affect can be seen throughout the field. Kolarov is a better player because of the defensive work Sterling does. Silva has much more space and is playing even better this season which is saying something. Sterling also adds much needed pace and directness. As excited as I am about KDB joining City, he will have a tough job to win the award of greatest addition to the team this season.

I absolutely agree with you, but the fact Sterling is enabling others around him to play better doesn't translate into FPL points.

Thats very true. I started with Sterling in my team and changed to Silva cause he wasn't really getting the FPL points that others on the team were. Hopefully that will change soon, we are already seeing it with a goal last week and an assist the week before.

I can't see it personally. Few people seem to think so, but myhill signed a new contract and has been in good form with two clean sheets already this season and heroic last. They don't have a back up keeper with foster out so they had to sign someone.

LVG is a cup manager. United will do better in the champions league than the prem this year. Well set up, drilled and hard to beat. Just like Dutch were under him. Take that spain result out don't think they scored more than 2 goals in like 20 games with him. Same with united - won't win league, or get close, because they won't score enough goals. LVG would happily win every game 1-0!

I quite like this team I have to say - you have benching issues with that front 8, but don't listen to the haters who say you have to have a 4.5 sir friendzone on the bench, rotation is for risk takers! Plus somebody (ozil/eriksen recently) very often gets injured just before anyway.

It depends 102.0 is quite good if you have not wildcarded yet

Oh well in that case you are shite fpl player and are doomed to finish last in all your mini leagues. But really IMO price rises at this point in the season mean a lot less then people make them out to.

I really don't like using my one transfer on a defensive move, I like it to be attacking - if I have 2 though I'm very happy to do one attacking, one defensive

probably makes no sense just how I like to do it!

Thanks. I was thinking that I would save. Waste of an FT if I am just gonna bench the guy I am getting in.

workaholics would be the most similar to always sunny, tho it'd be far from the best on this list. if u like those you'd probably like pretty much all the ones i've suggested 🙂
