Captain Sensible – Gameweek 27

Next up this Friday we roll our usual pre-Gameweek members article, focusing on the captaincy conundrum ahead of the weekend’s eight fixtures. As always, we analyse the Opta data for the main contenders and assess the team statistics and Rate My Team’s reckoning, before rounding off with our opinion on the current poll standings in light of the data analysis, including our view on differential captains.

The Captain Poll

With no Sergio Aguero to fall back on this week due to the Capital One Cup final, you’ve voted Jamie Vardy as the standout Gameweek 27 candidate as Leicester entertain Norwich.

Somewhat surprisingly, the Foxes forward has been far from explosive this season and managed double-figures on just three occasions – Vardy’s consistency has been key to his lofty position, though, having scored or assisted in 10 of 12 King Power appearances. The Canaries, meanwhile, have conceded 15 times in their last five matches, including a 2-0 defeat at Villa.

A trio of players are jostling for second position in this week’s Captain Poll. Dimitri Payet currently leads the way on 23% as West Ham prepare for the visit of Sunderland. The Frenchman has already bagged a 10-point haul against the Black Cats earlier in the season, though his home form has been a little underwhelming, with a just a single assist in his last five Upton Park appearances.

Riyad Mahrez looks a very viable alternative to Vardy for the Norwich showdown. Backed by only 14% of voters, the Algerian has been far more explosive than his team-mate and served up double-figures on 10 occasions. His lack of penalty duties – which have since been handed to Vardy – is clearly a major factor here.

Harry Kane sits next in line with just 10% of the votes ahead of a plum home clash with Swansea. Although he’s earned points in four of the last five Gameweeks, the Spurs striker has mainly thrived on his travels in recent matches and has blown hot and cold at the Lane – he’s produced points in only five of his 13 home appearances. Kane is expected to wear a protective mask to cover a broken nose on Sunday afternoon after missing last night’s win over Fiorentina.

Below that quartet, there’s a host of differentials challenging for our armband attention.

Sunderland’s Wahbi Khazri rolls up to Upton Park on the back of a goal and two assists in his last couple of appearances. Diego Costa has bagged seven goals and three assists in his last eight outings but is handed a tough task to replicate that sort of form as Chelsea make their way to St Mary’s. Tottenham’s Dele Alli, meanwhile, has been selected by just 1% despite serving up two goals and three assists in his last four appearances. Like Kane, he’s performed better on the road, though, and has served up just three assists in his last six at the Lane.

Next up, we now delve into the data over the last four matches to shed further light on the situation and assess the validity of the current crop of poll results.

Long shot but nobody has a link to the 'Wildcard Plans' hot topic from earlier this week? It was called something like that anyway, compared the merits of WC'ing GW33 and WC'ing GW36

      ----------------------------
      The Types of Teams
      ----------------------------

There are going to be three or maybe four categories of teams and then Liverpool who will have different levels of relevancy depending on whether you look to wildcard pre gameweek 34 or pre gameweek 37.

First off, there are the straight and narrow teams such as Leicester, Southampton, Stoke, and now Tottenham too who will have no double gameweek in gw 34 and no double gameweek in week 35 either.

Secondly, there will be teams who have a double gameweek in 34 but and also have a game in gameweek 35 maybe because they/their opponents lost their FA Cup quarter final or they are a team like Man City or Newcastle with just a Carling Cup fixture to be re-arranged.

Thirdly there are the FA Cup quarter final winners and their week 35 opponents who will have a double in 34, a blank in 35 and then another double gameweek in week 37. This could be two, four, six or eight teams depending on how the quarter finals go. (Bournemouth and Norwich may be lumped into this set although they likely won't have a double in 34 as they could have a blank in week 35).

Then there's a possibility that FA Cup quarter final losers and also Man City and Newcastle who could have a single gameweek 34, no blank 35 but then a double gameweek in 37.

Finally Liverpool will have the holy grail of a doubles in both 34 and 37 with no blank week in between due to their impending blanks now.

      ---------------------------------------------------------------
The Case for Wildcarding before Gameweek 34
      ---------------------------------------------------------------

There will be enough teams with a double gameweek 34 to play this in one of a lot scenarios though in each case you will want 3 Liverpool players if you can get past their disappointing DGW from last year.

My ideal way to run this would be with this WC in gameweek 33
      3 Liverpool players
      8 players with a dgw in 34 and a fixture in 35
      4 players with dgw34, blank 35, dgw 37

This allows a 15 player BB in gameweek 34.

Then having rolled the week 34 transfer you can make one housekeeping transfer in week 35 while still getting 11 players out. Then you use your rolled FT from 35 and your transfers from 36 and 37 and you get something like this:

      3 Liverpool players
5 players who had dgw 34, a fixture in 35 and a single gameweek in 37
7 players with dgw34 had no fixture in 35 and dgw37

This results in 10 dgw players for gameweek 37 having had a BB15 in week 34 and 11 players in week 35.

IF Man City vs Newcastle is in GW37 then conceivably your housekeeping transfer in week 35 can get in an 11th DGWer for gameweek 37.

      -------------------------------------------------
The Case for Wildcarding in Week 36
      -------------------------------------------------

This tactic depends a lot more on your set up for gameweek 30 and works better if Man City vs Newcastle is in gameweek 34.

Ideally you have 11 players for gameweek 30 by week 29 so you can roll a free transfer through the blank week. This should put you on

      11 gameweek 30 players (this could include 3/4 Man City/Newcastle with a dgw34)
4 gameweek 30 blanks who have a dgw in week 34

This then gives you 5 transfers to get in players with a dgw 34 but also a fixture in gameweek 35 putting you on

6 gameweek 30 players with a single gameweek 34 (unless the City fixture is in 34)
9 players with a double gameweek 34 and mostly with games in 35

This means you ideally get between 9 and 11 double gameweekers in week 34 (dependant on Man City vs Newcastle), 11 players out in gameweek 35 and then you can wildcard in 15 DGWers in week 36 ahead of DGW37 IF there are 6 or 8 PL teams with a dgw37.

      ---------------
      Conclusion
      ---------------

There are currently two very good potential ways of playing the Wildcard as it stands although depending on when Man City vs Newcastle falls and how the FA Cup quarter finals pan out there may be a clear favourite post-gameweek 30. There are also caveats that both scenarios above are "best case" and don't legislate for the actual appeal of the players, their fixtures, rotation worries or the fact red cards and injuries will probably reign you in from the idealistic frontiers.

This week I am focusing on getting 11 players out for this weekend and also on replacing Myhill for a useful second goalkeeper. Then I will spend weeks 28 and 29 getting in a couple of Man City players for their good fixtures and for the possibility they have a dgw in 34. I will then hopefully roll my week 30 transfer and re-assess the landscape after the FA Cup quarter finals.

There are ifs and buts all over the place but hopefully the above helps you see how things may fall and whether you are suited more to one camp or another. The gameweek 33 method seems easier to pull off and gives you a bit more flexibility between now and then but if you play it well now and the Man City vs Newcastle fixture falls in week 34, you could benefit from a gameweek 36 wildcard in terms of player numbers.

Finally this is all just hit-free planning, either plan could work particularly well with a couple of well judged hits along the way.

Firmino / Deeney / Kane to Arnautovic / Vardy / Costa for -4?

Arnie has really tasty looking fixtures next few weeks Vardy over Deeney say no more and Costa over Kane for next 3 looks a decent differential as i can see Chelsea having a good run now.

    Yay or nay?

    Ty in advance 😉

I just poached this from a national newspaper:
    TLDR, Spurs are gonna concede

    Arsenal
Best: Neil Swarbrick (6 games, 0.7)
Swarbrick has not condemned Arsenal this season, but he tends to judge when Arsenal win away. It happened against both West Ham and Sunderland. Two away games as Arsenal have again this year. Maybe it Swarbrick of justice?

Worst: Michael Oliver (12 games, -0.8)
Home defeat both West Brom and Aston Villa. In addition, it was Oliver who judged as Liverpool crushed Arsenal 5-1 in 2014.

    Aston Villa
Best: Lee Probert (16 games, 0.4)
Villa has not lost for the last six games where Probert has condemned. Unfortunately, an injury he sat out this season.

Worst: Robert Madley (6 matches, -0.7)
Madley has sentenced key battles against Palace, Sunderland and West Brom over the last 18 months. Villa has not won any of them.

    Bournemouth
Best, Jonathan Moss (5 games, 1.0)
Bournemouth first Premier League victory came while Moss sentenced. Three points were at Upton Park after a 4-3 victory in which West Ham got the red card and penalty against.

Worst: Roger East (7 games, -0.3)
Bournemouth has snapped out of different cups three times while East judged.

    Chelsea
Best: Mike Dean (33 games, 0.1)
Dean tend to judge in Chelsea's favor. He turned out one Arsenal player when Chelsea won last fall. Pablo Zabaleta got the red last season when the London team won the Etihad. He has also shown out Fernando Torres twice ..

Worst: Anthony Taylor (9 games, -0.3)
Taylor broke the camel's back for Mourinho when he gave Fabregas yellow card for filming. Mourinho quarantine. Chelsea lost against Stoke.

    Crystal Palace
Best: Craig Dawson (6 games, 0.8)
Four of points from the two games at Stamford Bridge and Goodison Park is good store for Palace. Pawson also played a major role as Palace secured a playoff in 2012/2013 season.

Worst: Mark Clattenburg (10 games, -0.6)
Both Neil Warnock and Alan Pardew has expressed its dissatisfaction with Clattenburg in his time at Selhurst Park.

    Everton
Best: Neil Swarbrick (6 games, 0.4)
Swarbrick do not judge too often at Goodison, but when he does, it goes Toffees!

Worst: Jonathan Moss (13 games, -0.4)
In the last seven Everton matches Moss has judged have Everton lost six.

    Leicester
Best: Anthony Taylor (10 games, 0.9)
Leicester has not lost any of the last ten league games Taylor has condemned them. He blew the whistle when The Foxes broke out of the FA Cup. But it may prove to be a good thing.

Worst: Craig Dawson (8 matches, -0.9)
Leicester's promotion party was not quite big when Brighton won 4-1 at King Power in April 2014. The last seven matches where Yorkshire man has judged has not Leicester won.

    Liverpool
Best: Lee Probert (13 games, 0.4)
Lee Probert has become synonymous with the Liverpool scores three. West Ham (twice), Bolton, Newcastle, Cardiff and Southampton. Unfortunately for Liverpool, he has not judged at Anfield since December 2013.

Worst: Neil Swarbrick (8 matches, -1.1)
Swarbrick is Everton's favorite and Liverpool's nightmare. Four settlements with whom pipe blowing at Anfield ended with defeat against Villa, 0-0 against Hull and Sunderland and defeat against Crystal Palace.

    Manchester City
Best: Michael Oliver (10 games, 0.7)
Chris Smallings red cards is probably the highlight. The loss at Selhurst Park for almost a year ago is the only loss. Oliver judge league cup final against Liverpool.

Worst: Kevin Friend (8 matches, -0.8)
City had found eight straight games before being draw against Burnley a year ago. Boxing Day defeat to Sunderland three years ago recalls enough City fans too.

    Manchester United
Best, Jonathan Moss (10 games, 0.7)
There are not too many contenders now, as it was when Ferguson ruled. But Moss does a great job for United. The last five years he sentenced 11 United victories and a tie.

Worst: Anthony Taylor (10 games, -0.3)
Lose against Norwich and Bournemouth tells you something.

    Newcastle
Best: Kevin Friend (12 games, 0.7)
Friend and Newcastle is not as good friends as they once were. Not since March 2014 The Magpies had a good result under the Bristol referee. Before that, the nine straight.

Worst: Mike Jones (18 games, -0.6)
Jones was scrapped from the Premier League after City won 2-0 in January 2014. Largely due to the cancellation of Cheik Tioté goal. Since it has been five defeats and a draw.

    Norwich
Best: Lee Probert (9 games, 0.7)
Seven games without victory went Norwich, before they beat Arsenal in 2012/13. Then went the ten straight games without losing.

Worst: Kevin Friend (12 games, -0.7)
Carrow Road was once a feared defensive. Not when Friendster judge. Eight games without a win with Friendster as a judge. West Brom and Spurs both won in Norwich with Friendster as a judge.

    Southampton
Best: Martin Atkinson (9 games, 0.8)
Since promotion in 2012, Southampton won seven of eight games that Atkinson has condemned.

Worst: Mark Clattenburg (15 games, -0.6)
Two years ago sent Southampton into a letter in which they asked to drop Clattenburg. They had lost seven straight games with Clattenburg in the lead role. Southampton dissatisfied with many decisions. Since depends convicted eight times. Saints has lost six of them.

    Stoke
Best: Lee Mason (24 games, 0.6)
Stoke are not exactly known for winning away from home. But with Mason has happened five times. Everyone remembers well the victory at Etihad half years ago?

Worst: Andre Marriner (25 games, -0.3)
18 points in 24 games with Marriner as chief.

    Sunderland
Best: Mike Dean (22 games, 0.5)
Mike Dean gave three of his who was to secure Sunderland place in 2013/14, including shock victory away against Chelsea in April.

Worst: Mike Jones (18 games, -0.5)
Jones gave the actual battle where a beach ball ensured that Sunderland beat Liverpool. Since then he has not been on their side. A victory in the last nine where Jones has judged.

    Swansea
Best: Mike Jones (10 games, 0.6)
Jones has a taste for Wales' only team in the top division. 14 points in eight games in the past five seasons dictate.

Worst: Robert Madley (8 matches, -0.4)
Stoke cheered for victory at the Liberty Stadium this year. Stoke keeper Jack Butland escaped punishment after he arm outside the 16-yard box. Replays were shown a number of times on the big screen. The fans were anything but happy.

    Tottenham
Best: Mark Clattenburg (20 games, 0.5)
Clattenburg gave convicts who gave Spurs victory at Etihad earlier this year. He gave the same settlement last fall when Spurs also won after two offside goals.

Worst: Lee Probert (13 games, -0.6)
Last time Probert judged at White Hart Lane won Tim Sherwood's Aston Villa.

    Watford
Best: Graham Scott (7 games, 0.5)
Scott's Premier League referee family newest faces. Watford know him from before. The 2-1 win against Wolves three years ago is a good example. Christophe Berra got an early red card, which was later deleted.

Worst: Roger East (9 games, 0.5)
East has not condemned Watford in the Premier League yet. There they will be happy. Four of the last five home games with East as a judge has not Watford won.

    West Brom
Best: Phil Dowd (14 games, 0.4)
Unfortunately, not West Brom set Dowd since he never came out 2 half against Southampton in February last year. A battle they won. In October 2011, he gave Villas Chris Herd red card. It gave West Brom ability to turn back. Something they did. They won 2-1 at Villa Park.

Worst: Mike Dean (25 games, -0.4)
Three losses, three red cards and a wrong sentenced penalty to the opponent. It's Deans West Brom numbers this season. The penalty kick which should not have been given gave Bournemouth three points at The Hawthorns.

    West Ham
Best: Martin Atkinson (20 games, 0.4)
West Ham are unbeaten in their last four games with Atkinson as a judge. It includes opening series at Arsenal and FA Cup CPC away against Liverpool.

Worst: Andre Marriner (21 games, -0.4)
Three losses and three 0-0 matches the story for the last three years. Hammers have taken 16 points from their last 21 matches at the Marriner. 13 of the opposition have ended in the bottom half.

FT. Firmino to Arnie for a 2 week punt.

Curently fielding only 10 starting players.

Here is my issue. Between now and GW30 I have to use every FT to get XI out

so if I keep Ramsey until GW29 and don't get Siggy it will force me to use a FT in GW28 with this line up

        Schmeichel (WBA)

Smalling (WAT) Kos (SWA) VVD (bou)

Ramsey (SWA) Sanchez (SWA) Mahrez (WBA) Payet (TOT)

        Kane (whm) Kun (liv)

Henessey (sun) Ighalo (mnu) Simpson (WBA) Ward (sun)

if I got Siggy in he would sit and Ward would come in. But can anyone see an obvious move (|'d only have 0,8 ITB)

And that's presuming nobody gets injured/ suspended

Would you not just get Arnautovic instead? Two beautiful home fixtures next and a GW30 fixture

Would take so much pressure off too

yeah Arnie is an option too but we don't know if he's fit and after the next 2 Siggy's are better

            either option is good

AVL, NEW, che, SOT, wat, SWA

tot, ars, NOR, bou, AVL, sto

and arguably Arnie gives me more of a benching dilemma next GW as far as which defenders to bench

Because you'll have two FTs then, right? I don't know TBH but the Siggy idea is growing on me. I can see him getting on the scoresheet this week.

yes because I'l have 2 so given that assuming Arsenal beat Hull I'll have 7 outfielders with a blank GW30 and 4 FTs so I'd have to use one to get me to 3 outfielders plus Henessey with a blank

        Play 2 of these:

        Ward (wba)
        Lingard (ARS)
        Ivan (sou)
        Bellerin (mun)

RMT saying Ward and Lingard... I'm thinking Ivan & Bellerin?
