Team of the Season – Dimitri Payet

After arriving at West Ham in a deal worth £10.7 million from Marseille, Dimitri Payet went on to enjoy a fantastic debut season in the Premier League, scoring nine goals and registering 13 assists to help the Hammers claim an impressive seventh place finish. That form helped the midfielder gain a place in the PFA Team of the Year, while he picked up 18% of our midfielders vote to claim a spot in our Team of the Season.

THE STATISTICS

Payet made his way to Upton Park on the back of seven goals and a league-high 17 assists during his final season at Marseille. Priced at a reasonable 7.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), the Frenchman was the subject of much interest during pre-season and immediately justified the hype, bagging a goal and an assist in his first two matches, while a 16-point haul against Newcastle in Gameweek 5 cemented his position as one of the most sought-after midfielders in the game.

Payet then backed that up with two goals and three assists in his next five appearances, seeing his price rise to 8.3 in FPL by the time West Ham took on Everton in Gameweek 12. That afternoon saw Payet pick up an ankle injury, which left the midfielder on the sidelines until Gameweek 20.

He immediately returned to form in the Hammers 3-1 win at Bournemouth in Gameweek 21, registering a goal and an assist in an 11-point haul, while although he blanked in his next four matches, the playmaker ended the campaign in fine form, serving up three goals and eight assists in his final 12 outings.

Payet finished the season with 171 points in FPL, joint-fourth in midfield along with Swansea’s Andre Ayew, his former team-mate at Marseille. In terms of points per game, though, his average of 5.7 was bettered only by Riyad Mahrez (6.5) in the centre of the park and level with Mesut Ozil.

The Frenchman also served up six double-figure hauls over the course of the campaign and picked up points in 17 of 30 league appearances.

THE PROSPECTS

Having made such a strong impression during his first season in English football, expectations will certainly be high for Payet as West Ham move from Upton Park to the Olympic Stadium ahead of 2016/17. West Ham boss Slaven Bilic is expected to further increase the quality of the Hammers squad in the summer, with co-owner David Sullivan revealing last week the club had lodged a £24 million bid for a striker in France, while only on Tuesday, Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe also confirmed the Hammers had bid for Callum Wilson, in addition to Matt Ritchie.

Considering that Payet delivered fantastic numbers when the Hammers had either Diafra Sakho, Andy Carroll or occasionally Emmanuel Emenike as their central striker, the ceiling could potentially be even higher should West Ham land one of their big transfer targets. A price hike into the region of around 9.5 is certainly inevitable for the France international, though as the stats show, he could still prove irresistible at a higher valuation.

Indeed, Payet’s 13 assists were bettered only by Ozil (19) and Tottenham’s Christian Eriksen (16), while his average of 23.2 minutes per chance created was second only to Ozil (21.9) among midfielders. The former Marseille man was also a strong beneficiary from the new Bonus Point System (BPS), racking up 25 extra points, joint-fifth among all players in FPL despite those missed matches.

West Ham ended the season as the joint-fourth highest scoring side in the top flight with 65 goals, indicating we shouldn’t overlook their main attacking assets as we head into next season. Regardless of whether Bilic rolls out a 4-3-3, 4-2-3-1 or 3-5-2, Payet looks immune to any potential rotation and is likely to remain the jewel in the Hammers’ crown for the campaign ahead. A dead-ball ability to score from distance or create for his team-mates will ensure he is earmarked as a must-have by many Fantasy managers.

Bilic’s use of Michail Antonio will play a part in our thinking, though. Utilised mainly as a right-back or right wing-back in the final few months of the season, the former Forest man returned to his attacking midfield role on the final match of the campaign and duly obliged by netting the Hammers’ only goal in a 2-1 loss at Stoke. Antonio looks likely to come in around 7.0 or 7.5 and, having scored only one less goal that Payet in over 500 minutes’ less pitch time, could emerge ahead of the likes of Manuel Lanzini and Mark Noble as the Frenchman’s main rival for our attentions.

Payet had a great season, I'm just worried he'll be about £9.5m and not worth it next season.

I thought he'd overperformed this year but his PPG was properly elite stuff.

He was excellent value this year but I think there may be better options in his price bracket (or even cheaper) next year considering the quality (as in managers) that will be added to the league opening up more options.

Not the biggest fan of him by any means, but have been convinced he'd get the job for a while as you know. Delighted overall as I believe he was the best man for it.

Expecting a couple of big signings and an improvement from Schneiderlin, hopefully. I'm also hoping he's a fan of Leroy Sané. 😛

              A definite upgrade at least.

I'm sure he'll have his transfer targets ready. Yous definitely need a wide man. I'd be jealous if you got Sane.

If I'm honest I reckon he'll go to City anyway. Just saying he'd be my ideal (realistic) signing. 🙂 Mané or João Mario is perhaps more likely tbh.

                  xxx -- Rooney -- Martial
                  xx

Would be my call. I think he'd like someone with a bit more firepower and strength than Martial up top.

I'm fine with Darmian/Valencia/Fosu-Mensah for RB options tbh, but I agree on the rest. RW is definitely the one I have most interest in.

                    RW - Sané, Mané, Bellarabi
                    CM - Tolisso, André Gomes
                    ST - Ibrahimović, Icardi, Lacazette

No idea on CB (Manolas I know he likes), but something like that for me. I try to be realistic. 🙂

Okay i got a very silly question for most of you here but as for me i am completely clueless. I've been playing FPL since 2010/11 with a different email and UCL Fantasy since 09/10. Finished at 91k this season in FPL and Never been dropped below 1000 at CL, finished 501 last season. I've been joining a lot of leagues but never a cash league. Where do you find cash leagues in FPL? Where should i search? Was there a cash league this year?

I really like it 🙂 Midfield is almost identical to my current one!

Beautiful strikeforce on paper but when I put Giroud in my team, I couldn't take it in so swapped him back to Griezmann and made sacrifices elsewhere.

Keep an eye on the friendlies for that. I personally believe Alli is nailed but another one to watch in the friendlies.

Sommer is an excellent pick, Kozacik is a good £4.5m back up 🙂

Nice overall 🙂 We need to keep an eye on Rafa Silva too.

I need to keep an eye on Silva/Alli/Giroud for sure, rest of the attackers have been nailed in my team for a while now.
I've heard Mandzukic/Janko/Alaba being thrown around as well but none really convince me... 😕

Maybe it's better to go with no French attackers?
Romania are no pushovers. If (A big if) France look amazing, we always have a WC to bring in whoever seems nailed (Martial/Griezmann/Payet/etc.) It seems like a bit of a lottery to pick one atm.

how nailed is Martial for France? Really tough to go anyone but Griezmann as I fancy Coman/Payet to take some of Martial's minutes.

          4-3-3 I think:
          ---------------Hart----------------
          Walker, Cahill, Stones, Rose
          ----------------Dier----------------
          --------Wilshere----Alli----------
          ---Vardy-----Kane----Sterling-

Reckon Malli will get much game time in the tournament?

      1. La Roja
        • 12 Years
        8 years, 12 days ago

Nope, Cenk Tosun is main striker and Malli will be used as sub most of time.

Best picks are Volkan Sen, Caner Erkin, Arda Turan and Calhanoglu

Malli's hardly a striker. I suppose it'll be hard to displace Calhanoglu though

Plays anywhere across the front really but yeah he's not an out-and-out striker. More of a CAM or second striker.

Not surprised if he's not a starter at the Euros for Turkey, as he only just declared to play for them rather than Germany, who he was also eligible for.

He had a far better Bundesliga season than Calhanoglu though. Calhanoglu offers little other than his set-pieces for me, while Malli has everything except great pace. Calhanoglu was out-performed by Bellarabi and Son two years ago and out-performed again by Bellarabi this year.

Meh, friendly tap-in with defence all over the place but the timing couldn't have been better 😛 Still only scored 3 goals this season though, whilst playing for one of the most attacking teams in Germany.

Seems to be playing more advanced for the national team though.

He was mighty impressive a few years ago with Hamburger SV though, when he was the main man in the team. Really began to make a name for himself before Leverkusen snapped him up.

Which of these combinations for 4th mid and 5th defender in a 343 would you prefer?

    A) Dragovic + Alli
    B) Prodl + Alaba
    C) 4.0 + Perisic

If it helps, other defenders are Koscielny, Juanfran, Hector, Denayer and other mids are KDB, Reus, Matuidi and Rafa Silva. Cheers in advance!

I think you don't need to commit to a formation in this game. You could easily nail points from all your defenders. Out of them C or A if you can find a starting £4m

Good point-cheers for that. Do the substitutions apply to captains in the same way, swapping onto the substituted player? Or is the captain bonus just lost

Giroud 5 goals for France from beginning of 2015.

Griezmann 2 goals and 3 assists in same period

      Can't they go:

      Martial - Griezmann - Payet?

Thoughts on the England team today? This is the starting XI, a couple of players may be switched from this, but Hodgson has mentioned a 433 formation for today.

    --------------------Hart-----------------
    Walker - Smalling - Cahill - Rose
    -------Wilshere - Dier - Alli --------
    ---- Sterling --- Kane --- Vardy ----
