FPL Draft Is Released

As promised, Fantasy Premier League Draft has been released and is now available.

The new game is free to play and runs in parallel with, and as an addition to, “traditional” FPL. If you’re registered for that game, you can immediately get involved with Draft.

The links don’t end there. The Draft uses the same scoring system as FPL with only one exception – there are no captains or vice captains.

The first step is to create or join a league.

Private leagues can include up to 16 managers, although the game itself states that eight is the recommended number. That is the limit for public leagues – you can enter those with random members of the FPL Draft community.

Like the traditional FPL game, leagues can run in the classic form or in the head-to-head format.

The key selling point of Draft is that, within a league, each 15-man squad is unique. So only one team in each league can own Harry Kane or Romelu Lukaku.

The draft system used is described as a “Snake Draft”, where managers take it in turns to select players until a squad is complete over 15 rounds. There is no budget or player prices.

League administrators can set a draft date and time for private leagues, while public league drafts begin 24 hours after the first team joins.

You can build a Watchlist before the draft, and this can act both as a shortlist of players you’re coveting and also a list to govern your automatic picks should you be “away from keyboard”.

Things get really interesting when we start dealing with transfers after the draft is complete. Bear with us on this.

Transfers, or “Transactions”, are made in two ways – managers can make what is called “Waiver Requests” or they can dip into the Free Agent pool.

After the draft, all the remaining players are up for grabs but, initially, only through waivers.

These operate like transfer requests from managers who propose both the player they want and the player being swapped out.

A weekly deadline is set for waivers to take place and, when that is reached, they operate a lot like the draft.

Indeed, before the season starts, managers get their first waiver requests granted in the reverse order of the draft. So if you went last in the draft in Round 1, you will be the first to get your waiver request processed.

However, once you have succeeded with a Waiver, you go to the back of the queue.

Things change when the season starts, with the waivers granted in reverse order of the league table. So if you’re bottom, your waiver will be granted first to give you the best opportunity to strengthen your team.

Players that are free agents become available once all the waiver requests are made. These consist of players remaining in the pool and players that were released by other managers in the previous Gameweek.

Managers can draw from the free agent pool 24 hours before the Gameweek deadline and it’s on a first come, first served basis.

There are no direct trades between managers.

That, I think, provides a summary of how the transfer system works. However, it is somewhat difficult to explain, and further examination of the rules may reveal other mechanics missed or misinterpreted.

Fantasy Premier League have published an FAQ on the Draft game, and the full rule set is available here.

In addition, community writer and experienced draft campaigner Pav A Nice Day has already published two essential articles. His tips for success was followed today with his own draft rankings to help shape your personal Watchlist.

We will certainly be playing FPL Draft this season. Will you? Vote in our poll on the homepage, or via your slide-in menu on mobile, and let us know.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

The actual draft is exciting. Most of the teams losing interest after a few games because they messed up / missed / didn't understand the draft has killed it for me though

he just runs a couple of leagues on that platform
It's well run(I have played there a couple of years)-the draft this year I think is held during the international break-the transfer dust is settling and there is lots of time for the draft

That's the thing - The draft itself is extremely exciting. You put the legwork in and make your strategy. And then half the players drop out almost immediately - Partly because you were organised enough to get a decent squad and they ended up with semi-dross.

Yeah, I get it. I'm in a league of 15 and have a beow average team.
A league of 5/6 would be quite strong.

Best with mates who you know aren't going to drop out, I reckon. You can also make sure everyone properly understands how it works before you start.

I joined two different leagues originating on here last year.

Maybe it doesn't even matter who you play with - Those who get the worst squads are almost inevitably going to lose interest. Who wants to invest time and energy only to get stuffed most weeks?

I was just considering if doing a cash league would help. But you'd inevitably get people complaining about technology / platform failures before you even kicked off, leading to fights over money.

Just finished a draft League, great fun but going first is a ridiculous advantage....

    I ended up with

    Courtois Mignolet
    Cahill Valencia Alderweireld (Stones Matip)
    Pogba Antonio Wijnaldum Mahrez (Hazard)
    Kane Firmino Defoe

Considering no other attackers from Liverpool or Bournemouth who would you choose in your team:
    A) Defoe
    B)Firmino

In ideal world if Firmino was first chocie and no rotation then yes, but he will be rotated and juggled about. Lots of competition for the forward position and champions league qualifying will inetrefer with his minutes. Defoe will start every game and can go on runs

Oh no I don't have an attacker from Bournemouth or Liverpool. Defoe on penalties could sway me but I also like firmino as he plays for a better team

          • 7 Years

Do Defoe for two weeks then swap him to Firmino if it doesnt work out, Bournmeouths first two fixtures are pretty good

With both options I do have the choice of transferring to a cheaper 6.5 forward who is in form as well. Just more difficult going from Defoe to firmino with firmino being more expensive

One word of advice on any draft league, wait until the last possible moment. So many potential moves in the transfer market eg, you pick Sanchez as you are around 5th/ 6th in the draft and then he goes abroad?
Make sure you have active players (the humans too)

Have been par of a Fantrax draft that loads on here are part of and we usually daft after the International break (know this cant be done on the FPL one but hold off as long as you can)

even if you waited till the last second to draft on fpl it will be a problem with the season starting well before the window closes

Agree. Makes an FPL linked draft kinda messed up from the start that the deadline is the first game.

Havent looked at the FPL one, wondering if you can create a league any time. If so would work if the draft was day after deadline?

I'd say it's not a horrible thing that the market is still open. Because after a week or two, the last few placed teams could put in a request for that new player and sign him to help strengthen their team

Sanchez leaves after you draft him for example. You must be mid order in draft id guess. You start the season ok so when you get to pick up free agents you dont get first pick. Just an example.

Seems odd to complete a draft before final player lists in.

That's fair actually..but part of the risk I guess. Players get injured or lose their starting places as well so it would just need to be in the back of their mind while making the draft.

If the draft runs past the next Gameweek deadline, then the league will simply start the following Gameweek. Public league drafts will take place around 24 hours after the first team joins the league.

This is how I'm currently shaping up at the moment...

    Formation: 3-4-3

    Foster, Myhill
    Trippier, Cédric, 4.5, 4.5, 4.0
De Bruyne, Willian, Ramsey, Zaha, 4.5
    Kane, Lukaku, Firmino

    Ticklist:
    No deadspots in attack
No players below 7.0 in attack
"Cover" in attack from the top 6 teams (Chelsea, Man City, Tottenham, Liverpool, Arsenal, Man Utd)
Price structure allows to jump on any "bandwagons" in attack by downgrading De Bruyne, Kane, Lukaku (only exceptions are Sánchez and Hazard)
Starting with Kane means it doesn't require 2 transfers to get him in later

      Sound reasoning and good team.

I'm thinking similar. With potentially lanzini over Zaha or even Redmond and another 5.0 defender

    Hey all,
I'm setting up a Promotion/Relegation draft group for FPL draft. I'm noticing there are bugs with it, so the draft won't be done until closer to the start of the season.

    How it will work:

    - Managers will get in touch with me via email or on here with FPL ID and based on highest rank FPL finish to the lowest of last season will be put into their respective leagues (Premier League, Championship, league 1, etc..)
    - Leagues will be split up into 8-10 managers (still up in the air) but leaning towards 10 so that it makes it more interesting and has us using players, and cheering for those that we may not ever have on our fpl teams.
    - Draft will be done closer to the start of the season to hopefully bypass the bugs.
    - When leagues are made, I will need one manager from each league to create it and start the draft.

Please email me if your interested Goldmann009@gmail.com *with last year's rank and your FPL ID*

All from FFS are welcome, Looking forward to hearing from you!

    Thanks!
    -GM

Assuming that you entered your team and played for the entire season and you absolutely sucked, would you get relegated?

That would be the case, but it's all in good fun really. Noone wants to be relegated! Will also depend on if some players opted out for the following season in which case players would be bumped up. But that's all speculative at the moment.

Join up and give it a go!

Sounds great. I was afraid to join a public draft as people will probably start to drop off after a few weeks, but this new game mode seems exciting, definitely want to give it a try!
