The Knee Jerk – Gameweek 3 – Sunday

This was meant to be the day that would see talent from the north London clubs cause tremors in the Fantasy Premier League ranks and market place. Instead, both Spurs and Arsenal fell flat – to varying degrees of disaster.

Harry Kane had the opportunity to transform the Fantasy Football landscape. Not only could he have buried the August goal hoodoo, but he could also have delivered points for the 16.1% who captained him to capitalise on the failings of others – including Romelu Lukaku’s zero point score.

Once again he blanked. Once again the numbers he produced defied belief.

Kane had ten attempts on goal, seven from inside the box. For the second match running, he has surpassed his personal record for the number of shots in a single Premier League match without scoring.

This season Kane has fired just 25% of his efforts on target with a zero conversion rate. His rates for both in 2016/17 were 52% and 26% respectively.

According to certain statistical models, he should have 2.5 goals by now. But he hasn’t. He’s got nothing, and he’s being ushered out of FPL squads at a pace.

To compound matters, both Chelsea’s Alvaro Morata and Roberto Firmino of Liverpool provided goal and assist returns with maximum bonus to overtake Lukaku in the forward standings.

They provide an obvious exit route for those left feeling decidedly uneasy about Kane’s extraordinary three-match drought.

Dismissing talk of the August “curse”, there is perhaps another reason behind this sorry spell: maybe Spurs really are destined to struggle at Wembley.

We have just two “home” matches to go on – the first against the champions Chelsea, while it should also be noted that Spurs only edged out Burnley 2-1 at White Hart Lane last season.

However, there is building momentum behind the theory that Mauricio Pochettino’s men could lack intensity and that sides will raise their game on visiting Wembley.

With Swansea City and Bournemouth the next two opponents due to arrive, we will surely have more evidence soon. Falter against that pair, and our confidence in Kane and Spurs’ other key assets – Christian Eriksen and Dele Alli – will plummet.

While it’s a testing trip to Everton to come next, those forthcoming home fixtures, coupled with the unfeasible and record-breaking numbers – may convince many Kane owners to sit on their hands, even when faced with cheaper and more profitable temptations.

Spurs toiled, but their suffering pales in significance next to the cataclysmic display delivered by Arsenal at Anfield.

Like Kane, Alexis Sanchez had the opportunity to put Fantasy managers in a spin. Instead, he played a 60-minute role in a farcical Gunners performance which may actually transpire to be his last for the club.

It remains to be seen if Sanchez stays in the Premier League to be a factor in our season. For now, he played his part in making Liverpool’s attacking assets seem irresistible, as the aforementioned Firmino pulled the strings for both Sadio Mane and Mo Salah to step up with further hauls.

It appears that there is still one thing we can all rely on as Fantasy managers: Liverpool will present us with the dilemma of putting many attacking eggs in a single basket.

With Kane – our most bankable scorer currently defying all odds to misfire – perhaps we should just embrace that “problem”.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

So what's the deal with lacazette?

Is he now a rotation risk? I had in my team as gw4 captain option.

Now thinking of lacazette to firmino ... but surely that's madness with arsenal home to Bournemouth while pool are away to city

Pool away to City could be a goalfest given both sides much prefer to outscore the opposition than worry about defending, even though Pool does strangely do better defensively against the top sides

At the price points, 9.5 9.0 and 8.5, who would you pick? Mane Salah Firmino surely, so whats wrong with the triple up. Too many eggs in one basket seems a flawed proposition to me

When Liverpool score 1 goal or less you'll likely have a poor gameweek. That happened 15 times last season.

Liverpool will rotate as already shown last week when that triple up earned 11 points.

Spread the risk and you'll get better results.

hmmm I get your points that you've alluded to today. I mean, I wont have the triple up for the whole season, but I just think for the next 4GWs, they should all haul multiple times

        1. Obi-1 Kenobi-0
          • 8 Years
          6 years, 8 months ago

Yeah, don't get me wrong, they could well score explosively. The tactic just isn't for me. I can't help but feel like, if you're spending 9m per player (on average) that's quite a lot of your budget. So if, for example, City shut Liverpool out next week, unless you do really well with the other 73m of your budget then you're going to have an awful game week.

My point isn't at all that those Liverpool players are bad. I really rate all of them as fantasy options - but when Liverpool do poorly, which is inevitably going to happen numerous times these season (and typically unpredictably so - knowing Liverpool, could even be against teams like Newcastle and Burnley) then you're likely to going to sink in OR. Whereas if you spread that large portion of your budget amongst multiple teams, the chances of all of those teams doing poorly is far lower.

Don't want you to think I'm being overly harsh. If it works for you, fair play, but in my opinion there's nothing with well reasoned debate when it comes to FPL 🙂

also, the times in which Liverpool suffered a dip last season was when Coutinho was out injured and Mane was away at the AFCON. While they have all key assets rearing and firing, I'm happy to take the risk

    Kompany Davies Stephens Mee
    Eriksen Salah Ramsey Ritchie Carroll
    Kane Lukaku Rodriguez

    A) Kompany -> Jones or Naughton
    B) Ramsey -> ???
    C) Kompany + Ramsey -> Naughton + Mkhi for -4

Also, Ramsey will fall before next gw. If I transfer him out should I do it early to avoid the drop or play it safe??

Replacement for Dummett (out for 3 months, price dropped, and I have to take a hit)... so the replacement must be worth it.
    Considering:

    A) Schindler (HUD) -- will give some price rise, huddersfield looking good.
    B) Simpson (LEI) -- rotates with Naughton (SWA) and Suttner (BHA).
    C) Mbemba (NEW) -- like for like, and hopefully Mbemba gets some price hike and nullify the drop of Dummett, when I bring him in later.
    D) Francis (BOU) -- at 4.4 and will get back from injury soon.

Chelsea lost against Burnley and now people think they're not going to win/be competitive?

They beat Spurs and Everton, with Alonso getting 16 and 6 points in successive games, and Morata scoring 24 points over the course of those 3 games.

I think Chelsea's fixtures are arguably easier than the ones they've already had - I'd say any Chelsea player is 100% a good call.

I am looking for a 4.5 rotating partner with Mee until gw8. Is Ogbonna worth it? Any better suggestions?

I'd rather play mee every week than rotate a westham defender in at the moment

Fair point. Might just keep arnold in the side until I find a better substitute then.

What are kolasinac owners thinking of doing with him?

A shocking arsenal defence, rotation risk and wenger not playing him in his preferred position, it would appear as though the writing is on the wall.

I got rid before this week - get the feeling Arsenal are a shambles and no guarantee he'll be played in an advanced role. Really not worth the £6m for those reasons.

David Luiz/Rudiger/Bailly are much better investments I'd say, plus you have a whole host of

I agree. I am considering transferring him out of a draft side. Still, he has looked promising while playing, and arsenal might shape up, hopefully with him in the side. So I am waiting a gameweek or two.

            Forster (Elliott)
Yoshida / Stones / Hegazi (Dummett, Long)
Salah / De Bruyne / JWP / Ritchie (Carroll)
            Kane(C) / Jesus / Firmino

Dummett, Stones, JWP, KDB >> Jones, Clark, Pogba, Silva (-8)?
Or should I wildcard and make more changes?

Why sell jesus when he finally delivered?
KDB move is fine and you should go for it.
Kane is gonna score next game (i hope as i got him and dont want to miss the two digits hauls like last year). But as it is your team, you should decide the final call of what to do. I would keep kane and jesus and ship out kdb for sure

            Have kola & stones. 2FT

Happy with rest of the team no need to go into that (current rank 90K). Top of all my mini leagues.

12 mill in bank, with alonso as other defender.

            Thoughts welcome.....
