The Knee Jerk – Gameweek 5

This Sergio Aguero chap looks a good option.

Twenty goals in 25 starts last season; he’s scored 24 and 26 goals in his two previous campaigns.

Priced at 11.4, cheaper than he’s ever been – he looks useful.

Of course, we all know this, it’s just that today’s devastating hat-trick at Watford has provided us with an almighty jolt and left us questioning our logic.

Seven days ago I wondered whether we will ever need look beyond the Harry Kane/Romelu Lukaku combination up front.

In true “knee-jerk” fashion, a week later, I’m now left asking if we can afford to overlook Aguero.

We can’t beat ourselves up; our reservations to this point were understandable.

Pep Guardiola’s plans with the Argentine, working in tandem with his apparent darling Gabriel Jesus, were shrouded in uncertainty.

Aguero has started up with Jesus in four of five Premier League matches. However, he was dropped to the bench at Bournemouth – a decision that appeared to confirm our fears that we could not rely on Aguero and Pep.

But today’s treble took Aguero to four goals since the south coast “rest” and the impact has been instant.

Over 74,000 have already moved to acquire Aguero, with Lukaku the major fall guy. The Manchester United striker has lost over 16,000 owners to his City rival before he’s even kicked a ball in Gameweek 5.

Some are clearly convinced, and the rest of us are left wondering if we should follow suit. City’s fixtures are more than enticing, and the prospect of watching Aguero run riot clutching FPL armbands is a petrifying thought.

Indeed, the only consolation today was that Aguero’s ownership remains relatively modest. He was part of just 502,000 squads ahead of Gameweek 5, and captained by 39% of those managers.

His 20-points will still make waves across mini-leagues and ranks, but it’s surely the least impactful hat-trick of Aguero’s illustrious FPL career.

But the haul hit even harder as a result of Kane’s bitterly disappointing blank.

Almost a million (20.1%) of FPL managers trusted Kane with the armband and were left frustrated by Spurs’ inability to breakdown a stubborn Swansea at Wembley.

Everything – the form, fixture and the statistics – all pointed to Kane being the Gameweek’s must-own, high-scoring option.

But there’s that logic again.

The same thought patterns that can perhaps persuade us that David Silva, Kevin De Bruyne or Gabriel Silva can cover Aguero’s future tallies.

Maybe, like a good few struggling Premier League managers, we just need to go back to basics.

Selecting Aguero in your Fantasy Football team used to be our rule number one. It was our basic instinct.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Slightly counter intuitive but I think the tougher run of fixtures are good for Jones. Less likely to be rested and quite likely to benefit from Mourinho's approach to big games.

So annoying that Stephens is dropping tonight. Would have wanted to make transfers after tonight's games. Think I'll do Stephens to Naughton which'll mean Jones is my only defender over 4.5m but need the cash to fund the City players I need.

    2) Mkhi to Atsu, Firmino to Aguero -4, 0.5m to allow 433 option by Rosenoir upgrade

How much patience will you have with Kane?

There's understandably a rush to get in City strikers right now, and from what I've gathered, Lukaku is the main man to be shown the door. Reasoning being "he isn't scoring enough", "he isn't explosive enough" or "fixtures aren't good".

First of all I just wanna say that even though Aguero and Jesus has Palace at home this week as Lukaku goes to Southampton, that all turns around next week when Lukaku is the one at home to Palace as the City boys travels to Stamford Bridge - arguably a more difficult away trip than St Marys. Meanwhile Kane has two away trips - including one to a Huddersfield side yet to concede from open play at home. So in the short term, I'd say Lukaku's fixtures are great.

And now for the interesting part. While I see everyone jump to the conclusion that Lukaku isn't scoring enough points to justify the outlay when there's Aguero, Jesus and Morata, there's hardly anyone considering the option of ditching Kane. Where Lukaku has four goals in four, Kane has two in five and has already blanked four times - Lukaku only has one blank as per now. I'm scared to ditch Kane myself, but if Lukaku isn't proving his cost right now, then what exactly is Kane doing?

I expect that most will argue Kane's explosive and that we don't want to miss his next haul. But then I wonder; how many blanks should one endure with Kane in anticipation of the next haul while other options are scoring goals for fun?

In other words: How much patience will you have with Kane?

    1. Freddo
      • 6 Years
      6 years, 7 months ago

      The next 3 games.

Competition is fierce this year but patience is required for special cases, Kane and Spurs are a special attacking case which answers your opening question, they are entering a run of games equal to what United opened up with and in those games Lukaku scored 13, 6, 0 and 6, time to see if Kane can improve on that, if not he'll be sold by everyone.

I'm just worried, given the evidence we already have, that Spurs won't be same attacking force at home this year as they were last year.

        1. Freddo
          • 6 Years

in this situation, they have three games to show that they are or you turn your back on him/them.

I think we have to accept that this year, players at that price have to be explosive as there's several options we can't have.

Right now, from where I'm sitting, Lukaku had the best opening fixtures, he wasn't explosive, I guess you could say he's failed his test for that spot, time to try someone else while his fixtures turn?

Let's be honest, if he was 25% owned and not 56%, he would be gone.

    2. Dreams
      • 7 Years

Great point. It's difficult to say how much patience one should have a particular player.
I had Josh King for the first 3 weeks and he didn't do shit. I thought of keeping him for gameweek 4 also but sold him for Chicharito. It was a similar case with Jesus. For the first two weeks, he was bad. But I had confidence in him even though he would be rotated. And he has provided me with 3 consecutive hauls.

So my answer would be that if you are confident about a player's ability, keep him as long as you want irrespective of the price changes and the crowd's advices. The moment you think he isn't good enough, sell him. Think for yourself.

        Great answer.

There's obviously nothing wrong with Kane's abilities, but nor is there with Lukaku's. Given the marginally better goalscoring form and cheaper price, I'm just wondering wether keeping Lukaku, IF I wan't a City forward in, is the better option.

Make a comparative analysis I'd suggest. Lukaku's fixtures will also take a turn from now on.

I'm keeping because he has been unlucky. Hit the bar and there could have been a pen. Small margins

Yes, those are great arguments, and seeing him play I definately want to keep hold of him myself.

But will you sell Lukaku in order to get a City forward in, and why is he the better one to go rather than Kane?

Not doing this yet, but seriously thinking about it as a WC team. Too soon to pull the trigger?

    Foster, Elliot
    Cedric, Hegazi, SWard, Davies, Rangel
    Eriksen, TCarroll, Silva, Chalobah, Atsu
    Kun, Kane, Lukaku

Among others, Alonso, Mhki and Firmino would have to make way.

Pull the trigger if your current team needs surgery. Wouldn't get Hegazi though. The spurs triple up and City double up is too much though

Playing around with a wildcard, how's this one look? Third midfield spot would just rotate on fixture.

    Fabianski - Elliot
    Naughton - Jones - Kola - Bavies - Mbemba
    Salah - Eriksen - TC - Chalobah - King
    Aguero - Jesus - Kane

Erik to Mkhi and Jesus to Morata. Naughton to Tarkowski

I know Kun is rising tonight, but I actually feel I should keep Kane , his (c) maybe be the same difference as Kun this week or is three Spurs to much and should have two City and two Spurs?
