The Knee Jerk – Gameweek 6

Quite simply, we can’t have them all.

On a day that began with us fixated on the fortunes of Sergio Aguero, it was perhaps fitting that almost every other big striker produced their own bid to steal his thunder.

Aguero was a slow starter but eventually found his gear to take his turn in Manchester City’s mauling of Crystal Palace.

A goal and an assist were his reward, with two bonus points ensuring that the Argentine avoided being dwarfed by the double-figure blitz from Raheem Sterling and Leroy Sane from midfield.

Again, there was evidence that Pep Guardiola’s attacking riches border on the ridiculous. Just ask Gabriel Jesus.

The Brazilian sat unused on the bench, forcing his 678,000 owners – not least the 183,000 who acquired him with Palace in mind – to choke on a bitter pill.

Pep’s Jesus decision was perhaps signposted by 90 minutes in midweek. But it’s no less confusing for us Fantasy managers, who must now wonder if Guardiola will toy with ongoing rotation of his strikers, with Sterling and Sane building compelling claims for regular starts.

Chelsea in Gameweek 6 will tell us more, although it’s City’s meeting with a beleaguered Stoke City defence that we really care about now.

We can, of course, opt out completely. It’s not as if our options are limited.

Harry Kane’s brace at the London Stadium offered a reminder that he will not surrender the Golden Boot, or his place in squads.

Sold by 196,000, with 141,000 of those swapping to Aguero, the Spurs striker set the bar for the City man with a 13-point return in the early kick-off.

Kane remains a force of nature, with the talent to circumvent Spurs’ woes on the Wembley turf – he now has 11 goals from his last five away matches.

Romelu Lukaku wasn’t to be put in the corner. He picked off his sixth goal in as many Gameweeks, as Manchester United endured a hard-fought victory at St Mary’s.

But Chelsea’s Alvaro Morata won today’s battle.

He ruthlessly exploited an ailing Stoke City defence to punish the 148,000 who had disposed of his services amid the clamour for Aguero.

Chelsea and Morata won’t play against a centre-back pairing of Darren Fletcher and Glen Johnson every week, but the Spaniard’s haul was nonetheless telling.

It offered a reminder that this is a season awash with goal scoring riches.

Our midfield firepower may have stalled – thanks in no small part to the absence of Eden Hazard and Alexis Sanchez. But that’s allowed the strikers to roll back the years and reinstate themselves as the critical position in our squad.

This could have a marked impact on our squad construction, particularly for those still with Wildcards to play. Funds in midfield will surely be scrutinised, monies in defence squeezed.

This could be a season where the big-hitting forwards take turns to dominate. Restricting ourselves to just two may no longer cut it.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Thoughts on downgrading Firmino to Chich and just banking the money for a while?

          Have you watched Alonso play?

Jones is an uninspiring centre back, for admittedly a good team- but thats it. His fixtures are about to get worse.

Alonso is an inside forward listed as a defender for another good team that is about to go on a ridiculous run of fixtures. He has plenty of direct freekicks and spends most of his time on the edge of the opposition area.

Naughton has an assist and 4 BP while Fernandez has 5 BP already just for clean sheets. Better BAPS in all games except when Naughton got that assist.

It was always going to be a risky move to go without. Kane scoring kinda eased the pain. Plus, he wasn't the highest scorer in the week too but did haul. Everyone's happy I guess including the Lukaku hokey-cokey guys.

Lukaku -> Kun didn't work out that well imo. Only a 4 point deficit, only 2 if you captained Kane instead of the Aguero you would've if you brought in. And Lukaku has the bottom team at home next week while Aguero has the champions away.

I did Firmino & Pogba > Ritchie & Aguero for a (-4).... instead of just doing Pogba >Silva for a FT & keeping Firmino. As it stands I'm down 8 points, but up 0.5 in TV, with Ritchie still to play. So happy enough to be honest, as think Ritchie has a good chance of breaking the move even tomorrow, and TV is only continuing to climb. That 3 man KaneKakuKun forward line is the happiest I've been with my FPL team in many a year

Alli, Eriksen, Silva, Salah even Sane, Coutinho and Sterling all in the points today, most of them have all season, why is the message that midfield is not producing points being pushed out?

There's an argument to be had that there's not one area in that game that's not pulling it's weight, Jones at United a perfect example, more points than Firmino.

    1. TheTwelfthMan
      • 6 Years

Alli, Eriksen and Salah are the premiums producing. Sane, Sterling are not nailed, there's an inherent risk in Silva too, Coutinho had no form before this game.

Yes but it feels like the articles this week have been implying that midfield is full of two point merchants, not sure this has ever been the case, Mane back next week to add to the list of players who are/will produce who can't be ignored.

Brady, Ritchie, Groß, Atsu are all keeping pace with Alli, Salah, Eriksen, Silva. If you convert their scores into PPM, they're all in & around 4.0, which is spot on. Groß is actually much higher, but probably will catch up a bit in next few games

Lets be honest, the mids they are talking about is Hazard and Sanchez, the rest have been performing with those two ready for action.

Premium strikers and premium midfielders are scoring, but cheap-to-mid midfielders are also getting points whereas the cheaper strikers are mostly garbage.

Ergo it makes sense to spend big up top and cover it with some cheaper mids rather than vice versa.

    Hey guys,

This is is pretty straight forward right?

Firmino and Alonso --> Morata and Simpson/Mee for free?

    Cheers

Im not convinced by man utd, think they have been flattered by a few of their scorelines. I believe lukaku will fall away a little when it's fixtures stiffen in a couple of weeks, leaving Kane and aguero as the essentials up front. With hazard, mane, Salah eriksen, Alli, coutinho, Sanchez and a couple of city midfielders battling it out for our midfields.

Madness. Lukaku is getting chances every game from Utd's midfield. He'll have one or two blanks as every striker does, but he's going to be in the top 3, if not top points scorer come end of season, barring injury

      1. Freddo
        • 6 Years

Lukaku is scoring like a defender, whichever way you dress it up, 6, 6, 0 and a 7 is not really acceptable for his price, granted he's had two double digit hauls at either end but to catch a 6, 6, 0 and 7 as a Captain is soul destroying.

One double digit was massively fortunate so he's only felt like he's been good value for his price on the opening day of the season.

The fear of his ownership is what locks people in not his performance.

That 0 is accident due to him missed penalty.
Also means that he's their main striker.

If i ditch him it has to be for another premium striker. More worried with firmino for now.

Yes I know, that missed pen is the reason why some of his gloss has also gone as it prevented him from going really big last week.

It's actually a negative, doesn't support him as a full.

You'd be happy if Firmino was a steady stream of points, not sure about it coming from 11.7m

If his double digit haul was fortunate then you have to also say his 0 was unfortunate - a rare missed pen.

And he's on 44 points with the top defender on 41, so he isn't 'scoring like a defender', he's outscoring every single defender in the game. Fact.

Agreed, he's out scoring Valencia by 3 points but costs 5.2m more, probably an argument to double up on the United defence and lose Lukaku as you'll get more bang for your buck.

You're being a bit disingenuous. The comparison with the top defenders at this point is deceptive and you know it because they have either matched or exceeded their average attacking returns for the whole season by GW6. Valencia averages 1 league goal per season and has scored it already, artificially inflating his score by 9pts. Likewise Bailly has more goals in 6 this season than in 23 last season and Azpi with double his average assists for the whole season by GW6.

In terms of attacking points, these are more like anomalies than indicators for the season. Not so with Lukaku.

Although Lukaku's 6 in 6 is not sustainable for the whole season, it is far far closer to being sustainable than the top defenders' current stats. He's likely to get 20+ goals as he has been around that mark most seasons playing for weaker teams and he is young enough that he is still improving.

Disagree, his ability to score points is why people own him, not his ownership level. He is third top scorer in the game after only 6 games, and will be one of the favourites to be overall top FPL points scorer this season. If that's not someone you want in your team that's your call!

I'm guessing people will lose patience after 12 games when other premium strikers do what did today and leave him looking up.

Can't underestimate the value of his starting fixtures, he's been underwhelming at best given how kind they were.

Four captaincy mehs out of six don't really cut it.

I don't doubt that people will lose patience, some already have, but that's their mistake imo. Kane has 4 "captaincy mehs" out of 6 as you put it... same with Morata... Lukaku is well on track to hit 250+ points, that's grade A* FPL talent.

This - there are many doubting Thomas's when it come to Kaku, but as the weeks go by they will be fewer & fewer. Think he'll easily match Sanchez's 260 points from last year, and at a cheaper price tag too

This dumb bird was worried with no pool assets but got his 4th green arrow and a sideways transfer of Jesus > Aguero that worked out.

        Thanks bird.

Yeah worked out this gw. Still slightly concerned about Pep's rotation but gonna risk having Aguero whilst in this form.

I watched the game and his work rate off the ball was impressive. I think this is what Pep thought was lacking last season so hopefully that means he's a little more secure for starts this season.

If things do take a turn with rotation he can always become Morata or any other player.

        How'd you do?

Plus one with pace is the key thing... could see Josh King being the next Lukaku - goes to Everton, becomes main man, scores 20 league goals a year, gets poached by a big club for mega bucks in a couple of seasons. He is an excellent talent
