The Pre-Match Preamble – Gameweek 11

I’d like to think that my season is now in “The Recovery Position”.

Ranked just above 330,000, it’s a comfortable spot that puts me in sight of respectability.

Now I can look to build on the three successive green arrows and perhaps start to gradually reel in some of those ahead of me, edging towards something more preferable than just plain “respectable”.

That’s if all goes to plan.

I’m still feeling somewhat on edge looking at my squad. Eden Hazard, in particular, is already proving a troublesome asset.

He almost defines the term “luxury item”; a player that possesses two very dangerous traits for Fantasy managers.

For starters, Hazard is on penalty kicks. An almost random benefit that can pay off at any time, even when form falters.

Secondly, he is arguably a world-class talent. He has the ability to score goals from nothing, akin to his solo effort against Arsenal last season – a wonder strike that I actually did benefit from.

But that day proved a rarity.

When, at the end of last season, I was asked to nominate my most frustrating player, I opted for Hazard. This despite his 224 points.

For some reason, whenever I welcome the Belgian into the fold, he does just enough to retain his place, while reserving the big scores to coincide with the time that I finally give up and trade him in.

Even the penalties stung me last season. I held him for the Southampton away trip, only for Chelsea to earn a spot-kick in the dying minutes with Hazard hooked.

While he’s returned in both matches for me so far, delivering 11-points in Gameweek 10, I’m still expecting another bumpy ride.

Man City’s midfielders provide a conveyor belt of cheaper “on-fire” options, so the lure of cashing in Hazard’s lofty price tag is strong.

The switch to Sane, pocketing some handy spare change, is an obvious and perhaps wise move to explore.

But my strategy with City assets is decided for now.

I refuse to go near the two strikers until Pep Guardiola gives us more assurance on Sergio Aguero as his first choice.

That leaves me assessing the midfield candidates, with Sterling my chosen poison.

A cheap recruit at 8.0 at the time, he hardly needs time to impact on matches so can contribute in a 20-minute cameo. And when starting, I believe he can match the output of the other City assets. The numbers certainly suggest that’s the case.

Having just a single member of Pep’s attack can leave my squad less exposed to his whims, providing the replacements keep pace.

Doubling on Sane will remain an obvious temptation, and I’m relying on Hazard to help me fight that urge.

A beguiling player; he is an asset who can tease and almost please his owners even when blanking.

But this time he will need to prove me wrong. Hazard needs to save his best for me.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

I think the price change system has been farcical this season and is showing more inconsistency than ever. I'll admit I haven't done any solid research but Fplstats are struggling to crack the formula this season, something they're usually pretty good at. Price changes are a big part of FPL. Have I missed the outcry or are people here really not that fussed?

I honestly think it's time for FPL to just have a open system to price changes. I would even go as far as showing us on the site who's on the up or down. Enough of this 'secret' formula which they seem to tamper with every single season. It really isn't a fair system to have price changes working one way in August and then a different way later in the season. After so long they should have a set system by now.

We all care so much for FPL on this site - again, am I alone in being bothered by this?

Player prices are a massive part of the game. I would argue just as important as something like bonus points. You wouldn't like bonus points being issued inconsistently so why be ok with the price change system? I guess that's my argument.

I don’t agree. On the back of others’ diligent work for the price-rise sites we are spoon-fed an approximate solution, which we then have to make a judgement call on the timing of our transfers. There’s still a risk/reward for doing that and this should remain part of the game. People only think it’s farcical because they don’t understand the formula, but they haven’t made any effort to understand it, just to piggy-back on someone else’s research - which I believe gives doesn’t give them the entitlement which they irrationally feel they deserve.

I think it's unfair to say people don't understand the formula when it's constantly being changed. I do fully understand that this is why FPL don't detail how price changes happen - there is manual intervention. Surely we all can agree on that? But that's the thing I really don't like or agree with. They should set up a system and stick with it for the season.

I don’t agree on the manual intervention. But I am open-minded and can be swayed if I see proof. I haven’t yet.

What about the sites that work on tracking price rises and falls? After 10 weeks they still can't figure out how they work. Surely there's something in that which leads to the formula being tweaked?

There's also the small fact that FPL won't share how they work. For what other reason would they not share the formula?

            2. Pasqualinho

I believe (having seen some of Mark’s comments on the subject), that there are tweaks in threshold percentages going on all the time. But this is fair enough - a result of people getting disinterested and quitting would mean that these should change over the season. But fundamental changes - not so sure. FPL stats have noticed new stuff that goes on when players have DGWs and forced blanks (e.g. Loanees) that are new this season too - and International breaks also. And as we’ve only had 2 IBs so far it’ll take time for them to test out their theories and improve accuracy. Also I notice a lot of people complaining last week - but last week was a popular free-hit week and this must have had some effect. So I’m still not sure that anything is changing substantially over the season. A lot of people seem outraged by some changes they wanted to happen but didn’t, and all of them are putting it down to FPL towers being underhand - but pretty much all of them also admit to not doing much research or have any great understanding of how the system works, so I’m not sure we should take their opinion as gospel. But they do have the right to an opinion.

That's all fair enough but I think still arguing for FPL to simply display on the site who is rising and who is falling. Right now it is a bit of guess work to a player. To clarify, I am all for price changes and have benefited from changes as well as suffering. It's just the 'secrecy' behind it that bothers me. Why would FPL put themselves in this awkward position - just show us upcoming price changes and let people make their transfers as they see fit.

I don't think it is unfair to say people don't understand the formula, because that is a fact, but there are reasons for it of course.

What I find a bit strange here is the out-cry of 'manipulation'. The price rise and fall criteria is not fixed or cast in stone, it is unknown, subject to change and revision at any time, therefore this is not manipulation of a stated confirmed position, it is simply a moving target. It is like saying Pep is manipulating his team selection because he doesn't follow a set pattern from week to week.

Where the confusion comes in, is that sites like FPL Stats monitor price changes and base there projections on this, but they really don't know if historical price rises can be relied on for predicting future rises because they simply don't know 'the rules', and 'the rules' are changeable. FPL Stats is not 'FPL Towers'

For example, FPL Stats set a delta of 49k for a Lukaku fall after the last fall earleir in the week - that was too low and simply was never going to happen for a player as highly owned as Lukaku. Lukaku has hit his 100%, but that was a false position and because he hasn't fallen everyone cried 'manipulation' (the clever ones who play the Team Value game), it is simply because the delta was set too low, and notwithstanding this FPL Stats do not know what the delta should be to even the nearest 50k for someone like Lukaku.

I guess it's just what people are happy with. I know most people don't mind the system but there are many that do. The way I look at it is right now if you asked any FPL manager in the world to definitively tell you which players were rising or falling tonight they couldn't tell you. That's what I don't like. I think upcoming price changes are important info that we should have available. I think I'm right in saying it's pretty much the only info FPL don't provide on the site - the closest we get is transfers in and out.

I play the Noweigian fantasy game and there are no price prediction sites and it adds to the skill of predicting rises and falls.

I think the price prediction sites have been spoon feeding people on here (the ones that know such sites exist) and quite a few are now throwing their toys out of the pram (because the spoon is missing their mouths every now and then) about this lost advantage over the so-called ‘casuals’ ... and thinking there is some conspiracy at play ... it is quite ironic and funny if you stop and think about it 🙂

Daniels but if Chilwell gets starts then he will be good value for sure.
OOP and Puel sides get clean sheets.

Meh. Morata's looked awful lately and Everton have a better fixture. Not as crazy as it looks on paper

    Which two from:

    Ward Stones Jones?

    And

    Elliott or Foster?

Really unsure whether to play Jones or not. My backline atm:

    Yedlin (BOU - H), Cedric (BUR - H), Davies (CRY - H)

with Jones (CHE - A) on my bench.

Davies won't play so you don't have to worry, Jones will be subbed in

    Save FT or do a sideways move ( Clark -> Moreno ) - 1FT / 0.0 ITB

    Eliot
Francis Naughton Jones ( Dunk Clark )
    Hazard Sterling Salah RLC Grob
    Firmino Kane Jesus.
