And just like that, I find myself writing the last article of the season.

NOT AN ENJOYABLE SEASON?

FPL Gameweek 36 early Scout Picks: Brighton + Newcastle triple-ups

I’ll be honest. Just because of how the season has fallen after Gameweek 28, it has probably been one of the least enjoyable campaigns of Fantasy Football that I’ve played. And it has nothing to do with how I’m doing in Fantasy Premier League (sitting at 99k at the moment). Anyone I’ve spoken to, and this includes people that are having a very good season, is finding it a little bit like a chore because the schedule and FPL are gaming us, rather than vice-versa.

There are many things that have happened that make this season less memorable, in my opinion. The fact that we all had an extra Wildcard in all but name made 2022/23 fairly ‘easy’ on paper, with three overhaul periods leading to 80% of our players being similar in the second half of the season. The schedule after Gameweek 26 had a lot of doubles and because of this, the player pool was incredibly limited and we FPL managers consistently felt shackled when making our picks. There was just no scope for creativity or applying our minds too much because you were simply playing the schedule.

That said, it still is a game we all love and I will be eagerly awaiting next season with a big appetite. All things considered, we should be back to the good old days with a normal schedule and no Double Gameweek overdose in the second half of the campaign. In fact, in the last two to three weeks, I’ve enjoyed talking about next season more than I have contemplating the moves for this one, despite clocking a captaincy haul from Callum Wilson (£7.2m) in Gameweek 36.

PLAYING FOR FUN

FPL notes: Haaland haul, Ake rested + Solanke or Kane for Free Hit? 1

I wonder if there are any learnings from FPL this season?

From an individual point of view, in the last ten weeks of 2022/23, I’ve been reminded that I enjoy the game the most when I play for ‘fun’. I hope I will not stop myself from going for some picks next season due to reasons like staying with the pack. I think I now have the temperament to deal with extreme variance and have learned to detach from it emotionally. Having being shackled for a while, I think I do value just playing my own game, something that gives me joy. I think if there’s enough thought and research behind ‘playing your own game’ and a reasonable amount of not going too crazy, we should be okay. Right?

Having a permanent captaincy option like Erling Haaland (£12.4m) does help as you’re not really going to take extreme risks anyway because it would take a lot to bet against him for the armband. Maybe once I look back at the season, there might be a few more learnings but at the moment, our moves have been so dictated by the post-Christmas schedule that it is difficult for me to look past the ‘fun’ element.

My fellow Pro Pundit and pod partner Zophar made a good point when he said that people are so affected emotionally by the output of one or two players in their teams because they are the only players whose points actually matter, due to the template being so consistent and strong.

GAMEWEEK 38: SON TO SHINE?

Learning from 'The Great and The Good' FPL managers 4

FPL managers will be moving into punt territory in the final Gameweek of the season with everything except the relegation race and UEFA Europa Conference league position all but decided. I’ll just throw one gamble in there that I kind of fancy, someone who will be difficult to get to for most people involved. Despite the electric atmosphere that will be expected at Elland Road, I’ve got a feeling about Son Heung-min (£11.5m). Harry Kane (£11.4m) has been dropping a little deeper of late and I expect Tottenham Hotspur to get a fair amount of joy on the counter as Leeds United need to go for three points to have hope for survival. Son posted an expected goal involvement (xGI) figure of 0.7 in the previous game against Brentford and I do think he has the explosiveness to go big.

Why not go Kane instead? Well, there is nothing wrong with it but we’re all ‘vibes’ in the final week of the season and I just have a feeling about Son. What I noticed about Leeds was that their heads were dropping after the game against West Ham United and I don’t know if the reverse psychology attempt from Big Sam will pay dividends.

In case you’re looking for punts elsewhere, Arsenal, Crystal Palace and Liverpool are the places to go, in my opinion.

A THANK YOU

The best FPL goalkeepers for a Double Gameweek 22 Free Hit

That is it from me this week. I just want to take a minute to congratulate Neale, Tom and the editorial team at Fantasy Football Scout for doing an incredible job this season. The content has gone up a couple of notches and I’m not just praising the team because I write for the website. For as long as I’ve played FPL seriously, I make it a point to try to read everything written on this site. It has been my practice for the longest time and I genuinely believe just covering that arms you with all the ammunition you need to make your decisions. I would also like to thank Chris, Geoff and the editorial team for making writing so much fun as I’m genuinely given a free hand to write about whatever I fancy and unlike the second half of this FPL season, that has been truly liberating.

Also the last and the biggest ‘thank you’ goes to all of you reading what we type. I always have and always will be grateful for your support. Here’s to next season being ‘back to the good old days’.

Good luck with the final roll of the dice and if you fancy some more FPL content, we had a ‘vibes and laughs’-heavy final pod of the season which you can view below.

Utter lottery. I've got triple City, triple United, triple Brighton, triple Liverpool - every single player is uncertain to start.

How many hits are you willing to take if you are missing 5/6/7/8 players?

The problem is, we probably won't know who we are missing before deadline. I'll make a starting team, then take a hit for every one confirmed out.

I'm not sure, I don't really want to take a hit as if my rival doesn't.. my lead is only down to 6 points! But then again, the hit could be worthwhile? I don't know.

Problem is (most of) these players are capable of hauling if they start and are highly owned, so if you ignore all of them on a FH you are in trouble if any if them start (which surely a couple will just by law of averages) and do haul you are against it a bit.

I think you'll probably hear about the big names. Haaland, KDB, Salah etc. These twitter guys want you to re-twit them so they aren't going to be pushing out alerts about players no-one cares about.

Just look at it practically if you were a manager of team with nothing to play for in the league. And had to mind your players for an FA Cup and/or CL final who would you protect?
If I was Ten Hag I would have wholesale changes, the same with Man City and Pep.
Look at Cole Palmer, Alvarez, Garnacho etc that is what I would do.

Best sub 6m midfield punts this week? Options below:

    Eze
Pros - On fire, good fixture
Cons - Seems to be main pick and I'm chasing

    McNeil
Pros - Everton playing for something, decent chance of points
Cons - Everton may play for a draw?

    McKennie
Pros - Leeds need to win, seems nailed on
    Cons - Tough fixture

    Jacob Ramsey / Douglas Luiz
Pros - Both good chance of points
    Cons - Tough fixture

Lascelles is out injured? Not sure anyone is nailed in the backline for Sunday. Targett could come in at left back, meaning Burn could cover at centre back. Depends what injuries Botman and Schar may have been playing through.

Botman is fine, no injuries. I thought Lacelles might be back but it does confirm on NUFC.com he is out. Targett will deffo play so he may experiment with Botman-Burn (both left footers) otherwise it will be Schar. Tripps right back and Dubravka goal

Yeah, I agree. Only thing is whether Burn can play RCB. Botman said at the start of the season that his position was LCB and that RCB was a completely different position after he played there in a preseason game.

If you're holding onto a 10/15 points lead in a few leagues and any move here would be for a -4, is anything worth the hit or just go for this?

    DDG
    Trippier - Botman - TAA
    Salah (c) - Mahrez - Mitoma - Eze - Rashford
    Haaland - Watkins

    Steele - Isak - Shaw - Zinchenko

10-15 point lead is fragile to be wasting away 25-40% of it before a ball has been kicked. I think side looks good, I guess the worry is the bench is likely a bit thin if Shaw doesn't play

      1. Kodap
        • 6 Years

That is my biggest concern, I have a feeling they might take hits which would be good for me if I stay with the team I have. The worry is Haaland, Mahrez and Mitoma I guess, but regardless think they get minutes.

I think Isak is a great shout from the bench, I suspect Mitoma will play and I think depending on Pep's approach (strong or rotated) then one of the City guys gets minutes so you should be ok.

I have a similar lead and worried about Kane. He owns Kane, my only route to kane without a hit is haaland. I could swap (probably get the choice wrong) either a brighton mid or grealish for Eze as the free but Kane worrying me!

      What to do?!

I have done Mac10 > Eze, and was also debating the Haaland > Kane route. Neither of my rivals have Kane so that's a bonus.. but likelihood is someone brings him in, again though if they do that (neither of them have Eze, so my lead could be 14/19 if they take a hit and I don't).

I'm toying with Haaland to Kane. Brentford are not pushovers and probably will rise to the challenge of the game so I think its a calculated risk, and one i might be hoping for a benching leak to convince me to take.

    The impossible question. Who starts?

    Grealish
    Mahrez
    Both
    Neither?

I believe Mahrez usually starts in the FA Cup, so you would expect he gets the final - and he is most due a rest. I'd expect Grealish to get both finals and he needs game time - but is he injured?

I've got Grealish and after missing two games unless he has been dropped or is injured surely he plays. Don't expect any returns though and quite a tough game for City IMO.

Which Brighton mid to ditch for a punt player:

MacA - on penalties (scored 1 pt more than Mitoma since GW27)
Mitoma - keeps on looking like a haul but frustrates

I would start Trippier and Isak personally.

It's lovely to have ManU and Newcastle players next GW since they can somewhat be trusted to give it a go for a third place in the league (Man U at home, and Chelsea looks very poor which is good for Trippier/Isak).

      Mings - Trippier
      Rashford
      Kane - Isak

Those 5 will have a 99% chance to start next GW.
