Technical Area

The Technical Area – Analysing Downing’s Display vs QPR

The fall-out from Aaron Ramsey’s hamstring injury absence persuaded over 50,000 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers to snap up Stewart Downing after a change of position looked to have transformed the former Liverpool man.

Handed a role at the tip of West Ham’s midfield diamond in the previous three matches, Downing had served up a pair of assists ahead of a home clash with QPR but the continued absence of Mark Noble and Cheikhou Kouyate saw Sam Allardyce shift him into central midfield, with Mauro Zarate tucking in behind front two Enner Valencia and Diafra Sakho.

In this week’s Technical Area, we compare the resurgent Downing’s weekend display with his previous three outings and also assess Zarate’s performance in a 2-0 win which took the home side to seventh in the Premier League.

WHAM
downing

As illustrated by the average position map from Saturday’s match (above left), Downing (number 11) was on a par with Morgan Amalfitano (number 21) on the opposite side of the diamond, whilst the Hammers’ raiding left-back Aaron Cresswell (number 3) saw plenty of possession down the flank.

When compared to the previous trio of fixtures (above right), though, Downing clearly saw far less of the ball in attacking areas. Although his touches rose from an average of 66.7 to 80 and his passes received also stepped up (from 43.3 to 46), he mustered just 16 touches in the final third, significantly down from 29.7 over Gameweek 4-6, while his passes received in this area also dropped from 15.3 to nine.

In terms of involvement, Zarate’s stats in the same role fare poorly when assessed alongside Downing’s in the previous Gameweeks. Although the Argentine’s minutes per touch were identical (1.4), he received a pass every 3.6 minutes – far slower than Downing’s 2.2 when playing in “the hole”. Indeed, Downing’s average of two minutes per pass received at the weekend was the quickest of any West Ham starter, showing just how often his team-mates are now seeking him out, in spite of a change in role.

When it came to distribution, Downing still led the way for the Hammers last weekend. The 5.6-priced midfielder was top for successful passes overall (48), in the opponents’ half (22) and in the final third (nine), whilst Zarate managed just 17 successful passes, with six in the final third, over his 76 minutes, with a 77.6% accuracy. Again, when you compare that to Downing in the same position – 38.7 successful passes, 12.3 in the final third, 85.3% accuracy – it strengthens the latter’s chances of moving back to a more advanced role.

Although Downing still picked up an FPL assist last weekend, his creativity was definitely curtailed. The Hammers playmaker managed just a couple of key passes against the R’s – mirroring Zarate’s output – though this was down on his impressive average of 4.7 over Gameweek 4-6. Nonetheless, his total of 22 chances created is joint-top for the season along with Cesc Fabregas, with an average of 30 minutes per key pass – quicker than the likes of David Silva (32.1) and Gylfi Sigurdsson (35.7) – showing that his rise to Fantasy prominence is no fluke.

In terms of goal threat, though, whilst Diafra Sakho and Enner Valencia led the way for touches in the box (seven apiece) and James Tomkins registered four, Downing produced just one and failed to fire a single attempt. Whilst he had registered 1.7 shots per appearance in the previous three, it’s intriguing to see he only averaged one touch in the box per match during that period – indeed, only two of his 12 attempts this season have been from inside the box. If you’re buying Downing for his points potential, don’t expect to see him in and around the box too often.

Zarate mustered two touches in the area in the 2-0 triumph and produced a couple of attempts, both from range and were both blocked – his lacklustre contribution hardly bodes well for his chances of retaining a starting berth when the injuries clear.

With some kind fixtures still to follow, Downing’s increasing band of owners will be a little concerned by the weekend change of position. As we mentioned in this morning’s Scribbles, though, Kouyate is edging towards a potential return for the Gameweek 8 trip to Burnley and Zarate’s minimal impact behind the front two suggests he’s the man most likely to make way, allowing Downing to move further up the field once again and back onto our Fantasy radars.

Ok, the international break seems as good a time as any to throw down some inconclusive and unhelpful stats about the FFS captains poll.

I've been gathering data on the captains poll for the first 7 weeks of the season with a view to assessing how useful a predictor it is of a player's gameweek score. I'll try to continue this for the rest of the season for my own curiosity but am also happy to share periodically if anyone shows an interest.

Basically I've captured the number of votes and % vote garnered by each candidate each week and then subsequently recorded their FPL score that week.

I've attached a few links below which represent some of the data, but I'm not sure any of it is particularly impressive.

Poll Winner/Top Scorer Data: http://i.imgur.com/lu4bpie.png (full data hidden)
All Player Votes and Scores Sorted By Vote http://i.imgur.com/oVDK6I4.png
All Player Votes and Scores Sorted By Score http://i.imgur.com/8ZYDXF2.png

    Points I've noted:
    - Picking the player top of the captains poll each week as your captain would have got you 48 points (pre-doubling) at an average score of 6.86 points per week. Pretty good.
    - The average of all players gameweek scores in the captain poll is 4.50, so the shortlisted selection is already a good general guide, especially once you filter out the real outside contenders.
    - The top captains poll pick has scored in all but two of the seven gameweeks (Rooney in GW3 and GW5 where he got an assist).
    - Despite this, only once has the player top of the captains poll actually outscored all of the other options in the poll (Costa in GW4).

My conclusion is that going with the player at the top of the poll is a solid, sensible play that will get you decent returns more often than not. However, the voting is obviously heavily skewed by ownership (sadly) so someone appearing low down on the poll is not necessarily a reflection of their captainability. Adebayor attracted just 45 votes (0.34% of the total) in GW2 for a game at home to QPR and yet was proven to be the best pick that week. I think the graphs illustrate this quite nicely - there is a small positive correlation between captain poll vote % and FPL score and the top pick rarely fails completely but it is possible to deviate and win.

I'd love to see the captains poll treated independently of ownership - i.e. everyone votes objectively for who they expect to score most points that week regardless of whether they own them or not but I know from past discussions this doesn't (and won't) happen. It's unfortunate as that would serve as a much more interesting poll in my view.

If anyone has a burning desire to have any specific aspect analysed that I can manage with this very small number of data points I'll happily oblige but I suspect that won't be the case.

So there you go, pretty tedious but I seldom gather these stats and don't end up inflicting them on you at some point 🙂

Your point on ownership is key there, most people just vote for whoever they're planning on captaining.

Even subconsciously, your mind is drawn to whoever is in your team.

At the start of the season, with only two matches played, people were already calling Fabregas 'Essential'.

Even though he's just continued doing what he does, suddenly he seems to be out of fashion and now Di Maria is 'Essential'. Just five games into his Man Utd career.

But who do you realistically think will have outscored the other at the end of the season? The reliable one or the explosive one? And how many more 'Essential' midfielders are we going to see over the course of the seaon?

dont want to come across too hipster or moany today (yeah yeah yeah too late) but is it not a bit tragic that there could be a route to getting baines? the route to getting baines should be simply getting 7mil and using it, not everyone having the same midfield and same 7 or 8 defenders so it really is a case of a group deciding together what the best route is.
i'm not saying how it should be, purely a bit pissed how it's turning out so far

Would anyone be interested in a weekly community article where I pick out specific ridiculous comments made by users during the week and then we all laugh at them?

It would be called "Should this user still be allowed to post?!"

I like the concept as a bit of fun, but I'm not sure about the title. You can do better than that.

Decent punt players for the next few GW's? Bored of having pretty much the same team as everyone else.

I'd hardly call Tadlc a punt, majority of people have him anyway. Sakho's a good though, suppose.

Love the idea of Lallana, be an easy switch from Sterling too to free up some extra funds. I think Kaboul will be coming in for Pieters aswell.

Best defender for 5.5m or less? (Have 3 Saints, so not Bertrand)
Current defence: Baines, Clyne, Van Aan, Duff, Moore
    Thanks 🙂

    A)     Fabregas & Ulloa > Di Maria & Aguero for a -4 hit

    B)      Mata & Ulloa > Sanchez & Welbeck for a -4 hit

    C)      Ulloa > Welbeck FT

    D)     Balotelli > Aguero FT

Which option is better for next gameweek please?

      --------------------------------------welbeck---------------------------------------

Wanyama is a waste of a Saints spot

Like a keeper your 5th mid should come from a side you don't mind wasting a spot on

hmm, I won't be getting Pelle or Tadic so I'm not fussed about saints spots.

Clyne is in and i might double up with Forster (but probably not).

saw this beautiful looking woman with cork on the back of her shirt a few weeks ago. however she has just turned round and it's not pretty.
boyd is ageing fairly well, a bit of a vorderman. what i worry with boyd though is we're being sucked in by an attacking position when in reality he's no way near good enough to make any use of it. that's almost a blessing though, it means there's never any temptation to actually play him
