The Watchlist Updated – Gameweek 29 – The Midfield

After sifting through the best options at the back yesterday, we now take a look at the latest ups and downs among the midfielders in this week’s Watchlist rankings, which offer player recommendations for the next four-to-six Gameweeks. While there is little change at the top, goals for Gylfi Sigurdsson and Sadio Mane last week see the pair return to prominence.

Eden Hazard remains at the summit after registering a double-figure haul against West Ham following the blank in Gameweek 27. The Belgian’s last three double-digit scores have all come away from Stamford Bridge, and with matches at Hull and QPR, along with the double Gameweek 34 trips to Arsenal and Leicester, he could well continue to prosper on the road. Home fixtures against Southampton and Stoke also look good opportunities for Hazard to cement his place as the top scoring player in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) this season.

Our only other non-mover in midfield this week is Manchester City’s David Silva. The Spanish international has averaged 7.58 points per appearance since Gameweek 17, and with a strong upcoming schedule (bur, WBA, cpl, mun, WHM, AVL), the prospects continue to look bright for Silva, who is the second most transferred in player this week with over 45,000 new owners.

After registering his first goal since Gameweek 21 against QPR last week, Alexis Sanchez moves up a couple of positions. The Chilean managed a team-high five goal attempts against the R’s, and also led the way with nine touches in the penalty area. Although the Gunners face tough home fixtures against Liverpool and Chelsea in the next six, further home encounters against West Ham and Sunderland, along with trips to Newcastle and Burnley should provide Sanchez with ample opportunity to shine. It’s worth noting that last night’s win over United is set to see Arsenal’s Gameweek 33 clash with Sunderland rescheduled, though if, as expected, it is shifted to Gameweek 34, this still remains without our Watchlist’s six-Gameweek window.

Having only managed a single assist in his last five league appearances, Christian Eriksen suffers a slight drop this week. Fantasy managers who drafted the Dane in for the double Gameweek shouldn’t be too concerned though, with Eriksen registering five goal attempts against QPR, the same number as Harry Kane. After this weekend’s trip to Old Trafford, matches against Leicester, Burnley and Aston Villa should give the Tottenham playmaker the platform to produce significant attacking returns.

Swansea’s Gylfi Sigurdsson is back on our radars ahead of a kind looking run of fixtures for Garry Monk’s side. After this week’s home clash with Liverpool, the Swans face five sides currently in the bottom half of the league (avl, HUL, EVE, lei, new). Sigurdsson marked his return to the starting XI with a goal against his former side Tottenham, and now priced at 6.5 in FPL, looks a strong mid-price option for the coming weeks.

After registering another blank away from the Emirates, Mesut Ozil drops a couple of places. The German international has failed to provide attacking returns in his last two road trips, and while four of the Gunners next six are at home, clashes against Liverpool and Chelsea don’t look favourable. But leading the way with five chances created in each of Arsenal’s last two Premier League matches, it is clear that Ozil remains central to the Gunners attack.

Sadio Mane rises this week after scoring the winner against Crystal Palace. The Senegal international has now netted seven league goals this season, and with Graziano Pelle having failed to find the net since Gameweek 17, is the prime Southampton attacking option right now. Following the tough trip to Stamford Bridge this weekend, the Saints have a decent enough schedule (BUR, eve, HUL, sto, TOT), which should provide Mane the opportunity to continue his good form.

A friendly fixture list and a 14-point haul against West Ham in Gameweek 27 has put Palace’s Jason Puncheon firmly in our thoughts. Somewhat surprisingly, all three of Puncheon’s double-figure hauls have come away from Selhurst Park, and with four of the next six in front of his own fans, this may deter some would-be suitors. But with some plum home fixtures against QPR, West Brom and Hull, the 5.6-valued midfielder still looks a great value pick for the coming period.

Following three double-digit hauls in his last six appearances, the case for Philippe Coutinho has proved impossible to ignore. His appearance in this week’s rankings can largely be attributed to the fact Raheem Sterling has found himself playing as a wing-back in Liverpool’s last two matches against Burnley and Blackburn. Although it seems likely this is just a short-term measure by Brendan Rodgers, it certainly gives Coutinho the upper hand as a Fantasy prospect for now. The Reds, who are unbeaten in the league since Gameweek 16, face tough trips to Swansea and Arsenal in the next three, but favourable matches against Newcastle, Hull and West Brom should bring the Brazilian, and Sterling, if he is restored to a more attacking role, onto our radars. Fantasy managers should be mindful of the possibility of the Reds Gameweek 33 trip to Hull being switched to Gameweek 34, as discussed on the site yesterday.

Two of our favoured budget midfield options for the coming weeks are Leicester midfielder Riyad Mahrez and Swansea’s Ki Sung-Yeung. Mahrez benefits from the strongest upcoming schedule (HUL, tot, WHM, wba, SWA, bur/CHE), and priced at 4.9, looks an enticing differential with an ownership of just 0.3%. Ki has form firmly on his side, having scored three goals in his last five outings. Swansea also have some favourable upcoming fixtures (LIV, avl, HUL, EVE, lei, new), so the 5.1-priced South Korean international could yet continue to be a viable Fantasy asset for some time yet.

After finding the net for the second time in three matches against Everton last week, Victor Moses has overtaken Jon Walters as our favoured Stoke attacking option. The Nigerian winger, currently on loan from Chelsea, led the way with four goal attempts in the 2-0 win against the Toffees. Although Moses has form on his side, matches against Chelsea, West Ham and Southampton in the next six may limit any potential investment.

With tough away trips to Arsenal and Man City in the next six, Stewart Downing falls to the bottom of our rankings. West Ham do play host to Sunderland and Stoke in the same period, while matches Leicester and QPR also look favourable, but with just a single assist from his last six appearances, there look to be stronger options than the 6.6-valued Downing in the mid-price bracket.

Was surprised to see Aguero so far out in front on the captains poll ahead of an Arsenal attacker.

Felt that an Arsenal attacker is a nose ahead of a City attacker this week - in terms of home/away and opposition - and decided to take a deep stats plunge from the top board to see if I was correct or kidding myself with utter lies.

RMT machine gives Sanchez a slight edge on Aguero. But what does that really mean - the mysterious RMT machine? Why should believe something so clandestine and enigmatic?

    I took a deeper dive...

....a look at the stats that presumably run below the RMT machine you can see what goes into making that slight edge both in attack and oppo defence home vs. away:

    Arsenal home
    goals per game 2.30
Shots in box per game 10.6
Shots on target per game 6.8
    Mins per chance 5.2
    Big chances per game 2.92

    City away
    goals per game 2.21
Shots in box per game 10
Shots on target per game 5
    Mins per chance 6.1
    Big chances per game 2.07

    Burnley home
    Goals per game 1.35
Shots in box per game 7.71

    West Ham away
    Goals per game 1.46
    Shots in box conceded 9.61

    Hope you've enjoyed my findings.

Personally feel now Giroud has been rotated, I'd put him about part with Sanchez - and both slightly ahead of Aguero (but that's partly because I'm a sucker for Giroud).

Can also fully understand the appeal of saying; balls to that - it's Aguero vs Burnley. Fully understand that to point of maybe doing it myself come the weekend.

Great findings Limpar! I'm contemplating getting in Giroud this week! What do you think of Ozil? Have you had a look at his stats?

I'm a big fan of Ozil. It was funny last night when Danny Murphy said he was a shadow of his former self - right before his off the ball run opened up United's defence for the opener. There's a good post on Grantland about how off-the-ball work is underrated in the EPL.

Aaaanyway - in fantasy terms; yeah I mentioned just before he came back in the side that he'll be pivotal - and that I thought he'd score more than Cazorla over the season.

        I think that's true, but it'll be Silva-esque - steady - and I don't think he'll outscore Sanchez.

That's just very surface level - I haven't really looked at his stats in FPL.

Much as I love Giroud, the thing which has me swaying towards Aguero is his lack of multiple attacking returns - I think he's a very good bet to score this week, maybe even better than Aguero, but he rarely gets more than that, and he is struggling with discipline and bonus points, Costa-style, lately. If you go against Aguero, you're always living in fear of a brace or more.

True. You could point to similar home fixtures against Villa and Newcastle where he scored 13pts and 10pts - but it's a good point.

But - in fairness Aguero has only one double digit return since Christmas - compared to Giroud's 2 above.

        *switches back to Alexis*

Kane would have to do 200+ for two seasons to be near Bale. Bale was 2nd highest scoring midfielder the one season (Clint Dempsey was first if I remember correctly). Then Bale was second highest points getter after RVP the next. Think Bale was at around 250 that season.

my team is a mess, I wish I still had a wildcard:

    Panti (Lloris)

    Clyne Ivan Bellerin (PVA) (Hutton)

    Eriksen Silva Sanchez Walcott (Boyd)

    Aguero Kane Austin

    0FT 1.2m in the bank

I desparately need to ditch Walcott since he doesn't play but need to get Hazard back in so thinking I'll take a hit next week and do Lloris to a 4.7/4.8 keeper and upgrade Walcott to Hazard.

    Thoughts/Advice?!

Need to sort out my problem with my pricey defence and weak 4th MID:

    A: Puncheon ---> Mane
    B: Puncheon ---> Siggy
    C: Kosc + Punch ---> £4.5m + Silva (-4)
D: Save, Go without Silva vs Bur away this week

    Foster, Panty
    clyne, Kosc, Terry, PVA, Rose
    Hazard, Eriksen, Sanchez, Puncheon, Bod
    aguero, kane, austin

Thoughts appreciated. Hope everyone is surviving the break 🙂

Suggestions? Rooney a good bet this week against Spurs I would say. Eriksen > Silva / Caz?

Or don't take a hit and do Rooney > Costa next week + something else?

I wouldn't go with Costa for now 🙂 He is not playing at his best and also 2YC away from 2 match ban and we know that 2YC can also happen in two games for him 🙂

Rooney - Giroud for me 🙂
          Eriksen - Silva

And you also have some extra money to upgrade defence .. I would take Terry/Ivanović over Kosc and downgrade him .. maybe go with Ospina and downgrade Kosc to Naughton? 🙂

    a) Erikson to Ozil.

    b) Erikson to Sterling

    c) Boyd to Puncheon

    d) Moses to Siggy

How is the GW33/34 affecting your transfer plans for this weekend?

I for one was all set to swap out Eriksen for Ozil (which i still think short term is a great move with his home returns of recent]

But then on closer inspection I worked out by bringing Ozil in i would only have 8 potential starters for GW33 [2 of which are Burnley players!] one less than i would have if i saved my transfer or maybe 2 less than i would have if i transferred out say PVA, who i dont intend to play much regardless of their fixture as i already have pantyhoes

GW33 team as things stand CAPITALS are players who could play that week

    Pantilimon Hamer

    Koscielny TERRY DAWSON TRIPPIER pva

    HAZARD Sanchez ERIKSEN SILVA BOYD

    KANE AGUERO Austin

As much as i love the idea of bring Ozil in this week. I think it would be pretty short sighted of me to do so. Im now looking at a better reserve GK or a cheap playing defender with a good GW33 fixture. Not exciting. But maybe sensible.

Anyone else got the same dilemas as me. Not having a playing 2nd keeper is certainly gonna waste one of my transfers. Many people wont have this same problem?

He looked great but in a classic assister of the assister role.

Great for real football but wasn't in the penalty box as much as Sanchez, Ozil and even Oxlade Chamberlain.

Agree though in real football terms he was very impressive. He makes that midfield tick at the moment.

Need to plan ahead for GW34, all my transfers will be based around that now. The big dilemma will be whether to sell Sanchez to free funds.

    A) Sanchez, Terry and Schlupp
    B) Ozil, Ivanovic and Moreno

If I ditch Sanchez, I won't be getting him back for the rest of the season.

He's had a couple off the post that I can think of, which makes a difference as that's 'off target'... Still, I'm not sure how Sturridge is so under the radar, certainly a more attractive option than Costa to me.

Do you need two Chelsea defenders, or even three Chelsea? Arsenal away is one of the toughest games of the season, and Mourinho hasn't been keeping CS in the big games like last year.

It's the cost that is putting many off. And most have two cheap strikers making it very difficult to bring him in. The FFS template is not very flexible to a big forward hitting form.

You can roll over one free transfer. You cannot roll over two free transfers. Once you save a transfer, you can use a transfer every week and always have one available.

I meant I save GW29 transfer and then do 3 transfers after GW30 for -4..

              9 years, 2 months ago

If you save in GW29, you will lose a transfer in GW30 if you save. You should do one of the transfers in GW30, and then the other 2 in GW31. That way they will all be free and no -4.

GW33 will be -8 either way.

I get a transfer in GW29,I will save that and then I will get one free in GW30,I will do 3 transfers then for -4..this is what I meant. I think I worte it the wrong way.

    3. Ludo
      • 10 Years

      You're wasting a transfer in GW30.
You're taking a hit to do Sturridge (ars/NEW) and Mane (eve/HUL/sto) to Austin (wba/CHE) and Eriksen (bur/AVL/new) which could be disastrous.
You're then getting a Leicester defender.

I'm not really keen on it. Not sure what the goal of that sequence of moves is.

So the best plan for those who have WC'ed seems to be for the 13 outfield players......

GW33 (keeping an FT in hand)

    5 Leicester/Chelsea
    5 "normal"
    3 "DGWers" on bench

    GW34 - using 2 x FT to swap 2 x "normal" for 2 x "DGW"

    5 Leicester/Chelsea
    5 "DGWers"
    3 "normal" on bench

"normal" = playing one match in both GW 33 and 34
"DGWers" = blank in GW 33 and DGW in GW 34

    Yes?
