Great Expectations – Jermaine Beckford

After a celebrated and free-scoring career in the lower depths of the English game, Jermaine Beckford will go into the new campaign having successfully found his feet in the top flight. Next season will be huge for the ex-Wealdstone striker as he looks to cement himself as a Premier League player; both Everton and Fantasy Managers could be in line to benefit should he continue to make progress.

Beckford certainly took is time to adjust. Following his move from Leeds United to Everton last summer, the striker initially found the going tough after being thrown in at the deep end in the opening games and he struggled to make an impression. Beckford himself, was all too aware of his early shortcomings…

“To go to a new club and go straight into the starting XI is really exciting but it can also be a little difficult as you don’t know your team-mates and they don’t know you. You need to spend time on the pitch to get to know each other, so it is an exciting time but also a slightly difficult time from a footballing point of view.”

The striker started three of Everton’s first five games but, having failed to make an impact, did not make his next league start until January 5 – gameweek 22. Things improved markedly from that point on and Beckford eventually won the Goodison Park faithful over, finishing the season behind Tim Cahill as their second highest scorer with 8 Premier League goals in 14 starts and 18 substitute appearances. He also contributed 2 assists and notched up 5 Fantasy Premier League Bonus Points along the way, ending the year with 82 FPL points – a decent haul for a player who started less than half of Everton’s league matches.

Key Factors

  • At present there are less strikers on the club’s books than on the final day of the season. James Vaughan has recently left the Goodison Park for Norwich and, although David Moyes is set to acquire further firepower, Beckford looks to still be firmly in the manager’s plans. Having finished the season strongly, Beckford will surely get the opportunity to flourish further – particularly if the pre-season goes well.

  • The two major competitors to Beckford for a position up front, Louis Saha and Victor Anichebe, are both relentlessly injury prone. It might be a touch unfair to predict their misfortune, but it would be surprising if both managed to finish next season without some sort of spell on the sidelines. Beckford on the other hand has managed to steer clear of any kind of serious lay-off since he began his professional career at Leeds United in the 2005-06 season.

  • The gap in the quality of League One and the Premier League is, of course, rather extreme and it takes a striker a while to settle in to the demands of facing superior defences. It was no surprise that Beckford’s second half of his first top flight campaign was much more successful – he grabbed 6 of his 8 goals in 2011, indicating he had come to terms with the demands and was ready to produce the goods.

  • Beckford is unlikely to see a massive hike in price so be could an ideal candidate to sit next to more expensive forwards in our FPL squads. Starting last season at 6.0, Beckford’s value decreased as the season went along and finished on 4.3. We can expect his initial valuation to come in around the 6.5 mark.

  • Fixture-wise, Everton have a pretty decent August and September facing the likes of QPR, Blackburn, Villa and Wigan. Investment is Leighton Baines looks highly likely but, in attacking terms, many will be reluctant to gamble on the inconsistent Mikel Arteta and the injury-prone Tim Cahill. If he can cement a starting role, Beckford could just be the solution for those looking to back the Toffees heavily over the opening set of matches.

Arsenal looking at Given. About 10 years too late, I find it hard to believe that clubs that are after a keeper are just hanging around while a player of Givens quality is sitting in a reserve side wanting to leave.

He's good but he's a long way from being the best. Cech is better for one and Hart kept him out for a reason (he's better). I like Given though, hope he gets first team football at a decent club next season (not 5under1and)

I think he's better than both, mankini obviously disagrees though getting dropped may have had more to do with his attitude over Hughes getting sacked. I think people have forgotten just how good he was when playing.
Villa should be all over him.

    Just a thought;

Fulham are starting their season earlier than everyone else so in my opinion wouldn't be a bad bet to buy heavily into them as they are more likely to hit the ground running. Does mean, however, that you should stay away come the latter stages of the season.

Wouldn't go for 3 Fulhams personally. They're a team that are great at home but struggle away, even if it's easy opposition. So every other week you'd have 3 players that i wouldn't be confident of scoring big. 2 Max for me

As for tips, best thing to do is practice. Everyone has their own way of playing, personally I like quick one touch passing, but others prefer dribbling etc. See what suits you.

I’ll be by far the worst player and get everyone’s nerves!

You wont be. Jamsiep has that sown up. 😉
I do find the Virtual Pro bit the best part about the game, but initially it takes a good bit of donkey work to get all your 'achievements' that improve your player. Plus it helps you improve at every position, I started as a defender, went def-mid for ages and now I'm either up front or an attacking mid. Each role has its own challenge, but the main ability you need in it is positional discipline. If you have a bit of that then you are fine.

              What's your user ID?

Not looked at Virtual Pro at all yet, but it is one of the bits of the game that seem the best (on paper anyway). Think I'll be a penalty taking sweeper-keeper.

Will get myself online as soon as I'm sure I won't blow the month's bandwidth allowance in one evening and get in Mrs Lard's bad books...

Yep, I couldn't predict who'd take Newcastles - Barton was the usual last season, but Ben Arfa took some shootable freekicks before De Mong broke him, Cabaye is supposed to be a bit of a set piece specialist too. Oh and there is Ryan Taylor - but he is pretty crap and probably won't start.

It's a bit like asking whether to go Cole or Vidic...

Personally I like the open customizability of Android - the way you can set it up exactly as you want, and install flash etc. Apple's ios is undeniably pretty idiotproof out of the box though, and if you can cope with the restrictive nature of the op system, there are probably marginally more apps available.

      In a word, yes.

Unless N'Zogbia is at the club, no other Wigan players are worth it. It's hard to know the better options for Norwich. Liverpool not a bad bet though.

I'm looking at Chelsea, Liverpool, Villa, Fulham. Arsenal from GW4 onwards and I'll have a look at having a United player.

The "AFC" is part of their name though in a way that an "FC" suffix for other teams isn't. They are never called just "Wimbledon" or listed as such in a league table - it's always "AFC Wimbledon".

I'm looking at that phone too. Seems like most of the apps that you pay for on the iPhone are available free for android, and there are loads of apps to choose from.

One issue I have is that if you turn the phone off overnight then the alarm doesn't wake it up like most phones, but it looks like you can put it into "Airport mode" and the thing will be quiet and the alarm will go off. Would still prefer to be able to switch it off though.

No idea about UK operators. Sorry.

There are more apple apps, but android is growing faster and I've yet to spot a gap in my needs. Orange reception sucks where I live (and the coverage maps are very over optomistic), but your mileage may vary. Best to ask around local users amongst your friends and colleagues.

My $0.2 - being an industry insider and affictionado - is that currently, overall, the iPhone will always be the most sophisticated device for at least the first 6 month of its release.

That doesn't mean you should get one, it depends what you use it for. My Samsung Omnia 7 (running windows) is absolutely perfect for me, and even though my screen is crisper, the retina display of the iPhone 4 is denser. I use mine a lot for games and films, and it slots into my home setup better than an iPhone could even if I had a Mac.

But being an industry benchmark with a huge installed userbase, the iPhone has advantages I'm jealous of, not least cheaper apps and more of them.

As for Android, for all its many advatages, you'd have to be as nerdy as I am to takefull advantage, and a lot more time than I'm prepared to invest.

I think if you're going to use it for anything more than a phone, think like this:
If you have a linux machine, get android
If you have an Apple, get an iPhone
If you have Windows 7, get a Windows phone.

Otherwise, it's a fair toss-up between Windows and Apple.

I still rate Clichy highly. It wasn't too long ago that he was being mentioned in the same breath as Cole and Evra. AS soon as we lost, Gilberto, Flamini etc.. our defence hasn't been given enough cover. Our defence has also had no stability for two seasons, soo many different players have played in that back 4. Great signing for City in my opinion, and a bargain for 7mil. Why do we always get mugged off with price!

                  😀

Had a nice chenin Blanc yesterday. It was very interesting, I tried a sip before we bought it, and at first I thought it would be one of those synthetic tasting acetone-like wines, but it was just very subtle.

Very smooth, clear tasting, and yet with quite a pleasant apricot/fruit/vanilla note to it.

After drinking reds, and some quite brash whites, this was quite a turn-up.

I humbly suggest Chenin Blanc as the next signature wine.

Done it already, Soop - it may return though. 🙂 The crucial thing with Chenin is that you should really get a whiff of honey when you drink it, and that when it's medium, you should get a hint of mushroom or truffle ...

Arsenal fans may be forgiven for recalling Wenger's fox in the box praise of Francis Jeffers. Doyle is good but not the player I would expect to fit in seemlessly to the Wenger style.

If Nasri and Fabregas go and he ends up bringing in Gervinho and Doyle then there are going to be a lot of arsed off arsenal fans out there.

Admitting that my Arse knowledge is a bit sparse, perhaps Wenger has 'Homegrown Rule' issues to contend with?

Perhaps this is a way of meeting the rule on the 'cheap'?

If Tot can keep things together, and sign a few forwards who know where the net is, it could easily be their year to finish ahead of their rivals.

I believe you're right about him not counting, although not necessarily because he's from ROI ...

"A home grown player is defined as one who, irrespective of his nationality or age, has been registered with any club affiliated to the Football Association or the Welsh Football Association for a period, continuous or not, of three entire seasons or 36 months prior to his 21st birthday (or the end of the season during which he turns 21)."

Doyle spent his ealry years with St. Patrick and Cork, so wouldn't be considered Homegrown.

So ... nevermind. Can't really see what Wenger's thinking ...

I don't think that's a huge problem for Arsenal anyway....alot of their foreign players were brought in as teenagers. Even Fabregas is home grown according to the rules.

Arsenal lack experience and leaders. Lee dixon and MArtin Keown are very interesting on the subject when they are interviewed on radio about it. There's a clear lack of leadership on the pitch and a sense of someone to turn to when the chips are down so to speak. No offence to Newcastle, but would Man Utd, City of Chelsea have allowed them to come back as they did.

If I was Wenger I think Scott Parker would actually be a good shout. So too would G Cahill or/and Jagielka...he should stop wasting his cash and invest in a bit of steel and leadership, particularly at the back.

and you have to hand it to him, Wenger knows how to put a team together, far more so than Mancini for example.

It's not about buying star players, stuffing them together and labelling it a team.

Nah, it doesn't matter. I spent a fortune getting Donna some imported tupelo honey for xmas, and I still don't like it. It's that medicinal note I can't stand. I also can't stand raw sugar, but I love caramel and maple syrup.

Important thing is, Donna seems to like it 😀 got her 2 small ones (winter white, which is long gone, and acacia) and a big jar of tupelo with honeycomb in it.

nah, check them out! They're well posh! No sugar near them.
I might have another nibble of some honeycomb when I get home, but I'd rather neck the maple syrup.

I often make a big pile of blueberry (American style) pancakes drowned in maple syrup. Eating what is ostensibly half a cake for breakfast* sets you up for anything!

You would be more than surprised what many bee farmers get up to, I'm afraid - imo, the habit of winter sugar is the main reason for the susceptibility of bees to the voroa virus ...

Honey is like a fine wine that is created from flowers instead of grapes. The term "varietal honey" refers to the honey gathered from a single type of blossom. Each type of flower nectar has its own flavor and sugar composition, therefore the honey reflects the unique taste of the bloom. Savannah Bee Company is the leader in honey purity standards. Any honey poured by Savannah Bee Company as a varietal must have a minimum of 80% pollen count. This ensures that the honey exhibits the best flavor and texture possible from the blossom crop. We take pride in our honeys' flavor and purity, so we don't process, over-filter, or add anything at all. We pour the best of the best of artisan Tupelo Honey, Sourwood Honey, Orange Blossom Honey, and Black Sage Honey harvests.

I usually find it's best to have a couple of million at least in the bank during the early part of the season. just until the season settles down, and you can identity firm targets for your squad.

But you're still spending points on transfers to get those targets, and there's a chance you'll have had a slower start by keeping money back (unless there are a lot of highscoring bargains).

Makes more sense to use the wildcard early, then it doesn't matter whether you have money in the bank or not.

I tend to agree, but for slightly different reasons.

the new rollover transfer has made it easier to avoid like-for-like transfers. Probably a large factor in my lack of hits last year.

it's not complicated, but because you're allowed to mess around with the ROM, and there's no point of contact if it goes wrong, it can get a bit messy.

Out of the box, there's nothing complicated about it
