Great Expectations – Stephane Sessegnon

Sunderland’s striker crisis at the tail-end of last season look to put their top flight status under threat – ultimately however, it helped unearth a gem. Steve Bruce shifted Stephane Sessegnon from a peripheral role in the Black Cat’s squad to a central figure as a makeshift forward; the Benin international responded with 3 goals in the final 5 games to kill-off the relegation talk.

Fantasy Managers pushing for the final furlong were quickly alerted to Sessegnon’s merits as an “out-of-position” signing. Classified as a midfielder in the low-to-mid price bracket, he represented strong value for those willing to take a gamble on an inconsistent and often misfiring Sunderland side.

This season things could be different. Bruce has manoeuvred effectively in the transfer market to bring in established Premier League talent in defence and midfield – his attacking players should be in line to benefit.

Sessegnon is very much part of the masterplan. Bruce has made it clear that his form at the end of the season demonstrated the player’s ability as a striker, or at least in the role playing off a central striker.

“Sess has come back and he’s in good shape which gives us hope…We’ll look to keep him there [up front] because I always think that’s his best position. It suits Sess and it suits the team and I’m very pleased with what I’ve seen of him.”

It’s clear that Sessegnon will start the season in a striker’s role and 3 goals in pre-season has already offered a timely reminder of his talent. Classed as a Fantasy midfielder, the appeal is obvious and, despite a tough opening day encounter at Anfield, Sessegnon looks set to find himself in many initial Fantasy squads.

Key Factors

  • Sessegnon is classed as a mid-price midfielder across the Fantasy games (6.5 in the Fantasy Premier League) and yet proved extremely effective when playing in the striker role last season. Although a desperate measure on the part of Steve Bruce, he would have been impressed at the player’s ability to lead the attack and prove a menace to opposing defences. Three goals in five games also helped demonstrate his effectiveness as an out and out striker. Bruce has already stated that he will look to keep him in this position and Seessegnon has justified that faith in pre-season already with another run of goals.

  • New signings Ji Dong-Won and Conor Wickham may offer Asamoah Gyan competition up front but, while Gyan is a proven Premier League talent, the latter are young flourishing prospects, unproven at the top level. Sessegnon is being earmarked for the role playing off the striker in a slighter deeper, “in the hole” role. Should Bruce look to blood Wickham or Dong-Won, it would seem more likely that it will Gyan’s pitch time which takes the hit.

  • Sunderland’s opening spell of the season offers hope of early attacking returns. Home encounters with Newcastle, Stoke and West Brom should bring profit, whilst away trips to Swansea and Norwich also carry potential. All those games arrive in the opening seven Gameweeks.

  • Although Jordan Henderson has left the club, Bruce has arguably invested well in midfield areas. The arrival of David Vaughan should add stability and the odd spark, whilst Craig Gardner and Seb Larsson have the ability to contribute attacking verve and, in Larsson’s case, excellent delivery. Sunderland should produce more chances this season and Sessegnon may benefit.

  • Sessegnon could well depart for the African Cup of Nations in January, Benin seem unlikely to make progress through to the latter stages. They may well be eliminated at the group stage which would presumably see Sessegnon miss just a handful of Premier League outings.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

do you think Wilshire will get regular games with Fabregas and Nasri still around? I've thought about Taarabt but he is yet uproven in the prem and so remains a bit of a risk IMO

For 6.5 mid-fielders I wouldn't say 'neither' so assuredly. Wilshere's getting better every time we see him and who says Fabregas and Nasri will still be around?

That's just it... likelihood is at least one of them will go. If Wenger bags Mata (fingers crossed) I imagine Barca will welcome home Fabregas.

Taarabt is unproven in top flight but let's not forget the Championship isn't exactly child's play. What's more, I've got 3 expensive mid-fielders to accompany this decision so it's a best-of-the-rest type thing.

I have Rodallega and have even (C) him for week 1, but this was on the basis of the fixture and the fact that week 1 is always hard to call, who will explode (it was Marlon Harewood last season for Blackpool!), also the fact that I thought he was on pens, but I forgot that Watson is on pens? Has made me re-think, always comforting to have your captain be a pen taker because if all else fails he may be lucky enough to get a penalty and return something.

My midfield is currently Malouda/Taarabt/Sinclair/N'Zogbia/Sessegnon, hard to justify excluding Taarabt/Sinclair or N'Zogbia, the former 2 because of set piece hogging, and N'Zogbia because he is now with a better team (marginally?) and is good value. Sessegnon I could replace with Moses purely because he is someone I want to take a punt on, what do people think? Sessegnon or Moses, bearing in mind I have Rodders from the start.

    Cheers

Hernandez won't play. Suarez may be out but otherwise a good choice. I'm pretty sure you can improve your midfield.

I'm not sure how reliable Luiz is to start and Gibbs is a no-go, especially considering Arsenal's fixtures. Perhaps look at Kompany or Simpson depending on your budget.

After GW1 both Arsenal and Man U's fixtures drop off for a bit, why not only choose one or the other or drop Bent down to a lower class 3rd place striker? I only say this because your middle is really really risky and your backend leaves you barely any rotation.

A lot of RMT's seem to have Albrighton in but is he even a guaranteed starter?

With Bent certain to be playing down the middle and McCleish liking the one up front he has quite a lot of competition for a wide role from NZog, Agbonlahor, Ireland, Heskey and even Delfouneso. Even if he wants to play in the middle 3 he has Makoun, Petrov, Delph and Ireland as competition.

I think he is a great prospect and would play him every week if I was the Villa boss but i'm not convinced he will start.

Actually, Pro Evo on the Wii is awesome. Mega-level of control on runs and passing. All it needs to be perfect is a button to switch which player you're controlling when you're defending instead of having to point. Ok, first 'He told the club website: "Hopefully I can score goals for Everton."'

      Yeah, hopefully.

Secondly, why is he worth so much, and why do we need another A.Johnson?

no, i suspect fulham to be more free-flowing/attacking than more defensive minded under jol.

Wouldn't that work to Riise's advantage though? Seeing as his main benefit over Hughes is the added potential of assists.

Trouble is that at 6m you need to play him most weeks. Hughes you can just rotate with fixtures.

there are more solid 6.0 defenders for better defensive teams out there. my most expensive def. is kompany, so i'm not one to really invest much in the back line. just mostly have cheaper certain starters and one or two pricey at 6.

Tough one. Option b gives you two penalty takers. Also £1m more to invest elsewhere.

On the basis that Suarez isn't the T1000 in disguise (needs a rest?) Option b to kick off with.

Im having a few thoughts about Man City's attack. Surely Silva is too overpriced. Or is he? Id rather have a city midfielder than a striker cause I want to accomodate Rooney + Bent for the first few Gwks.

The only logical option to me seems to be Yaya Toure. But I get a gut feeling that he's going to be playing too defensive to do an FPL team any good.

    What'dyu think?

I agree I think the MCY value is in Tevez/Aguero or Kompany. Silva may prove to be a genius and have a VDV 2010/11 style season but fact is he'll be supplying the pass before the assist quite often and he's not on freekicks or pens. I'm very wary.

and Hernandez is still picked by 20% of FPL, so its kind of irrelivant at this moment. Berbs wasnt a good pick until Hernandez got hurt, so look for a switch in numbers in the next few days.

Berbatov will start up front for the champions every second to third game yes, figure if he has remained at United he has been promised game time, and even if he hasn't, it will still be one game in three maybe, Hernandez is the better option with Rooney, Berbatov would be a waste of 9.5m.

You've better options for his price. Man Utd have some tough early fixtures and he's unlikely to play.
