Scout Notes

Scout Notes- Gameweek Two- Sunday

David Silva continues to dazzle as the main dangerman for Roberto Mancini’s stylish Man City in a 3-2 win over battling Bolton. A Matt Jarvis inspired Wolves keep up their 100% league record with a comfortable win over Fulham, while Stoke grab a last-gasp equaliser to deny Norwich a dream home start. Here’s the round-up of yesterday’s matches:

Solid Wolves
With Kevin Doyle partnered by Steven Fletcher up top and Roger Johnson marshalling the back-four, Wolves are looking a steelier proposition this season. The strike duo rarely played together last term due to injuries but have already shown that, if they can keep match-fit, will be a handful for any side. Mick McCarthy’s side swept Fulham aside in their opening home fixture of the season and with a wiser, more experienced look to the first XI, look unlikely to suffer a repeat of last season’s battle with relegation. Matt Jarvis was the stand-out player, with a goal and an assist in the 2-0 win. Roger Johnson appeared to grab an assist in the win but with all assists under review this weekend, we’re anticipating this to be addressed.

Jol Has Work to Do
Fulham have been impressive in their Europa League qualifiers so far but yesterday’s loss at Molineux means they’ve taken just one point from two league games and have failed to find the net. Martin Jol made four changes from the side that beat Dnipro in midweek but Fulham looked lethargic in this, their ninth game of the season, and will need to pick themselves up for next week’s trip to Newcastle. Clint Dempsey started up front again, partnering Andy Johnson as Bobby Zamora missed out with an ankle knock.

Bolton Up for the Battle
Owen Coyle’s side may have been beaten in the end but their willingness to scrap every inch of the way was encouraging for the Trotters boss. Ivan Klasnic scored again, Martin Petrov looked the part on the left wing and picked up two assists and with Kevin Davies also netting, Coyle’s side are in fine form going forward right now. The only problem for Bolton is that their fixture list doesn’t get any easier- the City game was the first in a run of matches that will see them face five of last season’s top six between Gameweeks 2-7.

Silva Continues to Shine
Man City have now scored seven goals in their opening two games and despite Sergio Aguero’s brilliant debut last Monday, it’s David Silva who has been the consistent stand-out. The playmaker was immense at the Reebok, passing and probing for openings in a porous Bolton back-four that was lucky to concede just the three goals. Silva has now scored in the opening two games, though there’s no denying his goal was somewhat fortuitous. With Carlos Tevez getting game time at Aguero’s expense and Yaya Toure dropping deeper now that 4-4-2 is a viable formation for Roberto Mancini, Silva looks the most assured Fantasy option of any City player. Mancini left out Gael Clichy, Nigel de Jong and Adam Johnson for this one, with Aleksander Kolarov, James Milner and Sergio Aguero starting.

Tinkerman Lambert
Paul Lambert demonstrated that he will shuffle his pack in attempt to counter the threat of opponents. He made no less than five changes to the Norwich starting XI that earned a draw at Wigan, dropping the likes of Andrew Surman, Russell Martin and Wes Hoolahan to the bench. Steve Morison missed out with a groin injury meaning that Chris Martin came in alongside Grant Holt. Turning his back on the midfield diamond in favour of a traditional 4-4-2 with wingers, Lambert emphasised the need to adapt in his post-match comments . From a Fantasy perspective then, the early signs are that we can take nothing for granted with the Canaries line-up. Ritchie De Laet at the back and Grant Holt in attack would seem the most reliable targets – De Laet was again impressive and his goal will have earned him further attention which is likely to tempt investment.

Potters Spot-Kick Dilemma
Stoke’s persistence eventually paid off against ten man Norwich, with Kenwyne Jones’ late equaliser denying the Canaries all three points. Jonathan Woodgate returned at centre-half after being rested in midweek, though a knee injury to Jermaine Pennant will cause Tony Pulis some concern- the winger was withdrawn just after the half hour mark. Jonathan Walters seemed to have jumped to the head of the queue for spot-kick duties- he stepped up and subsequently missed a penalty with previous first-choice Matt Etherington on the field. It’s perhaps doubtful as to whether Walters takes the next one.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Ah seriously I am suprised how people on this site did so badly considering it was "free" wildcard week.
It seems like it was just an unusual week.
In my league there is a guy in it who is going to score close to my score and he refuses to use fantasy football scout because "it is getting the computer to pick the team for you."
Worse still he only made 2 transfers gameweek 2!

depends who you got rid of I guess, but I wouldn't be too happy with Albrighton or Carroll. Aston Villa's playing of 3 strikers seems to taking up all of their points, whereas Suarez is the Pool goal machine and points hogger at the moment.

Rooney is a good choice, but Fenomeno is right, he could get injured tonight and then the transfer is wasted.

Yup, but we're two games in - buying players based purely on their performance so far is risky, look for long-term quality and overall team performance more than a defender getting a one-off goal etc as a basis for a solid team. When I finished in the top 1000 it was because I had a solid all-round team, I rarely bought in the guy who'd just scored a hat-trick like everyone else.

Malouda changed the game slightly. I'd say Torres and Drogba will start.

Is there any rules to the price increase/decrease?
I realise the more transfers in and out etc. But is there a certain number? Is it done as an overall percentage of total transfers. Any wisdom would be appreciated. Also time line for increase decrease.

I'm loathe getting rid of Torres this week. Bit do not want to wake up tomorrow and see 10.9!

Hmmm, no bonus points for Enrique, think I'm going to blame the premiership for giving me the false sense of security that I'd just watched him put in a MAN OF THE MATCH performance...

2 bonus points for Suarez was interesting though, showing that Super Subs (Utd are brilliant with these) are more than capable of getting bonus points and prehaps more likely as two shots on target in 20 minuts appears to be better than 3 shots on and two off over 90...

Yeah, missing shots seems to really harm players with this system - I'd expect coming on and scoring with your first touch then going off may be enough for BP's the way it's working, a little crazy really.

That's a good team SB. It will come good. Just start shifting out the players you don't want slowly and it will end up fine. I'm at a similar score and not worried. Torres or Hoolahan would be players I'd look at shipping if they dropped or you thought they were not starters.

So with gameweek 2 pretty much done and dusted, I am sitting with some questions here. It's clear that the "regular" performers are yet to shine with only a small amount doing the business thus far. Plenty new faces making some lucky punters happy with high scores either through their play or by divine BP intervention..Now really, are we thinking this is just early season shenanigans or has the change in season, interface, BPs meant that the game must now be played differently to the seasons gone by?

It just seems as if the regular scorers in the game are not as "hot" as before and is why I am wondering what most of you think about the FPL season thus far. The system change has also cast doubt over the validity of some of the info we get from here as what is suggested doesn't translate well in the game...so are there any early punts on tactics going forward or is this only a glitch to what will soon be business as usual for the usual batch of players that do well season after season?

I feel like I got whacked with a baseball bat on both knee caps and made to start running this marathon of a season barefoot on broken glass whilst being shot at with a pellet gun.

To make matters worse...the lack of friendly interaction with this new site has basically made me feel like I'm dating someone who isn't really into me cept for my money...so when it's convenient for her (it, the game) you see...

What's even more worse is that I have no clue as to what my options are at this time...do I sound desperate enough for you (?)...oh well...

Good team mate. Just a bad week.

It's doubtful whether you even need to use a transfer this gameweek.

It's only half time for the Baines, Cahill and Torres owners. Give them another chance in GW3. If they still fire blanks then yes I agree it could be WC time.

And to finally add...I'm not knocking the site...I've made use of a lot of what is on offer here...The EA index thing is a new setup that has resulted in us running blind right now and until the scouts work out how it all works we're left with too many questions...so don't get me wrong, this site is great (I am a paying member too) and my comment was aimed towards how this BP system works...that is all.

I'm sorry Blu Zulu. Perhaps I misinterpreted this:

"The system change has also cast doubt over the validity of some of the info we get from here as what is suggested doesn’t translate well in the game…"

In all of the info that is provided, the Scout Picks are the most definitive. It is where the scouts really put their necks on the line and put it in black and white those who they see as big scorers this gameweek.

My point is simply that what was suggested by this site, translated into decent returns for this gameweek.

I appreciate that you're trying to help me or somehow get me thinking positive...so for that I thank you. In that line I did say "some"...by scanning the info available in the members section one can make many assumptions about players but some of the markers that are noted there have not translated in the game..least not yet...the scout picks worked as you pointed out but that is not the only area for sourcing info....so in the end it was more just a call for more info on the EA stat system so I can make more informed choices...because before...with the info we could see we were pretty sure to know who could be in line for BPs etc...yet it hasn't been in our favour yet...because the system to measure performance is different to what has been made available at this time.

At no point have I or will I blame this site for my poor start...it's just that when I'm looking for help, the info here does have a question mark over it...at least "some" of it...hahaa...hope that clarifies my position / comment a little.

Just one thing to add...Team selection is also not based on one week punts but multiple weeks or even the whole season...so there is more chance of the Scout Picks being spot on for a gameweek rather than the entire season...as they are only aiming per gameweek.
