The Knee Jerk

The Knee Jerk – It’s About Time

With just five games played out, Saturday satisfaction always looked unlikely. It’s fitting however, that with the big guns yet to be primed, we saw a handful of mid-price players come to the fore and deliver long overdue returns. Fitting and just little bit painful.

Jamie O’Hara started proceedings, blasting a dramatic equaliser to earn Wolves an unlikely point. Full of industry, creativity and threat, O’Hara has been an influential figure, without delivering returns for those brave enough to take a punt. Subject of our recent Members’ Monitor article and, just a couple of gameweek’s later, O’Hara has at last broke his duck. It was coming.

The start of something special? With City up next and three away games in four, it seems unlikely. Even so, O’Hara could yet figure on our radars should McCarthy get Wolves earning victories again.

A few hours later, Sunderland’s Stephane Sessegnon – another mid-price midfielder who has failed to live up to his pre-season billing, earned Steve Bruce three points with a victory at the Reebok.

Ironically, Sessegnon’s first goal of the season coincided with his shift back to the flank, as Bruce paired Connor Wickham and Nicklas Bendtner in his forward line. The Dane later converted a second for the Black Cats; Sessegnon providing the assist and fetching a belated 10-point return for the few thousand Fantasy managers who had kept the faith. Expect bonus points to follow on Monday morning and, with three home games in four to come, suddenly “Sess” is back in the game and blinking bright.

While Sunderland prevailed at Bolton, Yohan Cabaye also fired his first goal of the season to hand North East rivals Newcastle the points. The Frenchman is another Fantasy prospect that’s been touted as overdue returns. Having delivered just a couple of assists thus far, Cabaye gleefully converted to keep the Magpies buoyant and Wigan resigned to the relegation spots.

Unlike Sessegnon, Cabaye’s stock seems unlikely to rise from today’s success. Alan Pardew is now set to steer his happy ship through choppy waters, three away trips in four with Stoke, City and United presenting three of the toughest destinations around. Cabaye’s next significant return could be a good few weeks away.

Is anyone out there feeling smug? Is there really any Fantasy manager with O’Hara, Sessegnon and Cababye tucked away in their lineup? There can’t be many and yet, there will be plenty who have owned at least one of them previously, now pondering what might have been.

Having been threatening to return all season, the trio chose today to get off the mark – a day which seems set to see such modest scoring for many. That only fuels the frustration and makes their late delivery all the more difficult to accept.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

I would imagine there is little news if it is an injury yet. From what i gathered on the radio, he was quite heated about the sending off. Could have been subbed to avoid another red card, or to re-shuffle in the wake of Herd's sending off

So Stoke have some reasonable fixtures coming up. Iive seen alot of RMT's/suggested transfers about bringing in Walters..... but what is the opinion on Etherington as a viable option/walters differential?

Walters is playing as a deep lying striker and is currently on pens (?) but will he have rotation between Jones/Crouch/Jermone?

Etherington is on his fair share of set pieces, is an ever present cog in the the Stoke attacking team and has proven FLP history.

If the extra 0.4m is not a consideration then what are the opinions in Ethers over Walters?

Well if you go for Ether then you are looking for assists mostly from corners. Also good thing is that Ether is one of the few stoke players who does well away from home. But walters offers goals, and assists (prob not as much as Ether).

Yeah Ethers will be more of a assist man, I have a feeling that Walters may have a had a few good scores but Ethers is more likely to consistently bring in points. Glas others feel Ethers is a decent option too.

Your team is fine. Only concern might be Nasri, and you already have Silve so maybe switch him for VDV. Front line is very solid

Don't transfer Rooney out but i'd be wary of not having Aguero vs Wolves .... not convinced he'll be rested as you reckon below - i think that may be wishful thinking given Dzeko's falling out, Tevez incident and Balotelli still up to his usual antics (setting off fireworks in his own house which set his flat on fire!)

It's pretty unlikely - the wording of the assist scoring rule says that if the ball is touched by the opposition outside of the penalty and it changes the direction of the ball, no assist will be given ...

a lot of knee jerking on here toinight.. i for one am gonna stick with suarez and petrov next 2 weeks atleast and then get rid for adebayor and ramsey if they still look like good prospects.. madness on here tonight.. if just one of suarez's shots went in (2 of the post and 2 brilliantly saved) ppl would be kneejerkin him in.. he still would've had the same potential for the next 2 weeks

the only reason i've had suarez from the start is cause he seemed a bargain at 9.5... with adebayor and sturridge coming in they've stolen the throne of bargain.. since one of aguero/rvp/rooney seems a necessity suarez's value in my eyes has fallen

That's a bit too harsh, Garg, Moses is still a viable option. I'm currently having him even ahead of Ramsey for the next week 🙂 But I'm too stubborn and life doesn't teach me anything. I thought I'd sell him after last week's failure, but then I saw MOTD and ... you know 😉 If only Di Santo could score from 3 yards into the open net!
