The Digest – Gameweek Eleven

The leader of the pack delivers for Wolves. Bolton tear into a leg-weary Stoke to avenge an FA Cup humiliation and Robin Van Persie takes a hit, as Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers are given every reason to dislike Mondays…

The Player

We’ve waited for Jamie O’Hara to deliver. For weeks we’ve had him bubbling under as a Scout Pick’s consideration, pondering when his contribution to the Wolves effort will translate into Fantasy returns. We suspected it would come as soon as Mick McCarthy’s side could turn the corner and earn their first win since gameweek two. Almost inevitably, lowly Wigan were on the receiving end of a Wolves revival with O’Hara the protagonist in a 3-1 win.

A 15-point FPL haul was signposted. Our Members can see for themselves how O’Hara matches up to some of the leading Fantasy targets this season – how his creativity and threat are integral to Wolves’ chances of saving their Premier League status.

With an FPL valuation of 5.7, O’Hara’s goal and two assists seems likely to rouse interest. Right now, however, investment in O’Hara is being dwarfed by the interest shown in this weekend’s other midfield revelations – Bolton’s Chris Eagles and Norwich’s Anthony Pilkington. Both are cheaper than the Wolves man and have also shown greater consistency when it comes to returns this season.

It’s difficult to make a case for O’Hara then, although we’re pretty certain that if McCarthy can get the Wolves ship on steady waters, O’Hara will be back amongst the points on a regular basis.

The Team

Having slipped to eight defeats in nine league games, Bolton unleashed a goal frenzy on a weary Stoke City at the Reebok. Owen Coyle’s men were relentless, led by the attacking verve of reborn Chris Eagles and the recalled Ivan Klasnic.

The Croatian had a point to prove having dropped down the pecking order following his foolish red card in the gameweek five defeat to Norwich. Since then David Ngog has emerged as a contender up front, while Coyle has dropped Kevin Davies to the bench as he juggled his formation and tactics. Klasnic was back in the lineup against Stoke however, with Kevin Davies alongside him. The Potters, suffering a Europa League hangover once again, had no answer to Bolton’s desire to banish the demons of last season’s humiliating FA Cup semi-final defeat.

The emergence of Chris Eagles is of particular interest to Fantasy managers. The winger has become a major component in Coyle’s plans and, having completed 90 minutes in the last four league games, appears to have surpassed Martin Petrov as a reliable creative force, with a heightened goal threat thrown in.

Three goals and four assists is a healthy return for a midfielder priced at just 5.3 in the FPL game. While Petrov languished on the bench, Eagles seized the opportunity to take centre stage. It’s hard to say how long his flame will burn, but with Bolton entering a run of favourable enough fixtures, short-term investment seems sound.

The Talking Point

Monday morning brought a chain of events that boiled the frustration of many Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers. Having delivered another huge points haul in the 3-0 win over West Brom, Robin Van Persie lost the assist awarded for Thomas Vermaelen’s goal and dropped in the EA PPI rankings, denying him a single bonus point. Those who captained Van Persie suffered an 8-point drop in their total – green arrows suddenly turned into red – I speak from experience.

It’s hard to pin down the real issues at play here. Is it frustration with the criteria used to judge an assist? The fact that a touch from Gervinho would be enough to cancel out the cross from Van Persie which eventually found it’s way to Vermaelen’s boot?

Perhaps it’s more the process of the points being removed, the fact that it took forty-eight hours for the points awarded on Saturday, to be stripped on Monday morning.

The fact is, Gervinho touched Van Persie’s cross. That was not only the judgement of the Press Association after Monday’s review. It was also the call made by Opta who also awarded a “Goal Assist” to the Ivorian on Saturday night.

Like it or not, then, no Fantasy game in the land gave the assist to Van Persie – it’s not included in the Sky game, it’s not included in the Fantasy League and, while the Telegraph give Van Persie a “Key Contribution”, they also award the same to Gervinho – recognising that he got a touch on the Dutchman’s cross.

We had the Van Persie assist for forty-eight hours but it was never ours to have. We can argue it – re-examine footage but where do we draw the line with such disputes?

When two data providers, charged with supplying correct and accurate data for statistical purposes both say Gervinho touched it, it’s clear we’re fighting a losing battle. The same could be said of Gareth Bale’s “goal” at Fulham – the Press Association don’t stand alone here either – Bale’s goal has been awarded by Opta and all the major Fantasy Games. At what point do we have to shut up and put up?

It also seems unlikely that the new definition of an assist within the FPL ruleset is to blame in the Van Persie’s case. There were examples last season, when this definition wasn’t around, where the slightest of touches took an assist from the supplier of a cross. If an attacking player gets a touch on a cross, a flicked header for example – they gain the assist if a goal is then resultantly scored, not the cross provider. We should be used to this by now.

Van Persie’s cross was intended for Gervinho – the Ivorian fluffed his lines, missed the cross but appeared to divert the ball with his back leg after swinging with the right. A bungled, unintentional intervention but, in terms of the significance of the touch, just how far apart is this from a flick off a player’s hairline on the near post? For all the frustration, once we accept that Gervinho touched the ball, it’s hard to argue against the assist going his way.

Unless of course we push for the whole definition of an assist to be changed. Perhaps such a touch from Gervinho shouldn’t be rewarded? After all, he never intended for the ball to end up Vermaelen’s path when he swung his leg.

Interestingly, Opta have two definitions for an assist; a “goal assist” -which Gervinho earned- and an “intentional assist” – which clearly he didn’t. Do we need and want a similar system applied to the FPL – should we only reward a player if he genuinely intended to set up the scorer?

Perhaps we want the Telegraph’s Key Contribution instead – a system where more than one player can be awarded points for their role in creating a goal – in this case both Van Persie and Gervinho would have benefited.

I’m not sure that a perfect solution is available, but we can and will debate this further. While the definition of an assist in the FPL is clear, it does create cases that cause frustration and perhaps offer the need for things to be re-examined.

Personally, I’m far more frustrated by assists being awarded after positive intervention from a defender (a clearance). Demba Ba’s assist for Ryan Taylor’s goal against Everton being the latest case in point. That’s my own crusade and one I’ll go on pursuing.

Don’t get me wrong. While I’m firmly in the camp that we have to accept the fact that Van Persie did not earn an assist, I’m also aware that things are far from perfect.

It’s worth noting that the FPL did act as a result of Monday’s events by adding clarity to the rules concerning the revision of decisions. They now state the following:

“All assists are reviewed daily but remain provisional until verified by the Press Association. For the avoidance of doubt, points awarded in-game are subject to change until the Gameweek closes. Once a Gameweek closes, no further adjustments to points will be made.”

Better. Nobody can be in doubt now that, until the bonus points are allocated, assists can be added and removed. Whether we’re comfortable with that is another matter. The view is that it’s better to arrive at the correct decision later, than make a call in twenty-four hours or less and get it wrong. Again, it’s hard to argue against this. We all want a fair outcome – had Van Persie kept his assist in the FPL, it would have been the only Fantasy game to award it. That surely would not have been a fair outcome.

We want live updates on our scores, but perhaps if a decision is subject to review, at that point the associated points could be removed. Perhaps that would make the potential pill easier to swallow. Perhaps communication on decisions under review is also required.

Monday’s events have clearly raised a number of issues and, while, in my view, we have to put the specific case of Van Persie’s assist to bed, the classification of assists and the allocation of points under review, remain hot potatoes that will clearly spark further debate. Listen out for the next podcast is all I can say.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

For all those on the ChopperToni bandwagon, WARNING! Nevil is not the only rival for his place in the first team. The most probable rival will be Tim Cahill. Reason being that Coleman will shift to RB to accommodate him with a possible reshuffle in midfield. Based on discussions I have had on this site some people think Coleman hasn't been that affective at RM and could easily be shifted back to full back.

    Ye have been warned.

    Cue: Jagielka bandwagon

IMO I'd nearly stay away from everton, even with reasonable fixtures they can't be trusted. At times looking/listening to moyes I wonder will he stay.

It is worth waiting to see how whether they turn around their form for a couple of game weeks. A few of us though including myself are on WC so we have the hard job of trying to predict good runs coming up and going against the tide of form to back those with good fixtures. Hence the inevitable interest in Everton/Stoke/Bolton/Sunderland etc

As for Moyes the next month will be crucial for him, its do or die

Coleman has been shit this season. I think he would just be dropped rather trusted in defence, really can't see that happening.

thats because he is a natural defender though, he isn't a particularly good winger and he is still young. Would Hibbert be better at RB? Im not so sure about that as he isn't a PL player in my opinion whereas Coleman has potential

Got two free transfers this week, and planning on using on of the on wilkinson. Bosingwa going out. But need some views on the other one, or maybe just save it?

    Team:
    Vorm-Ruddy
    Enrique-Bosingwa-Kompany-McAuley-Simpson
    Moses-Dyer-Bale-Silva-Ramsey
    Rooney-Suarez-v.Persie

I could do Suarez to Aguero, but if Arsenal can score 5 goals at Stamford Bridge, surely Liverpool can get one or two?!

I suppose its the story of a boy who cried wolf. No one can trust you at the moment, it will take time before you can earn peoples trust back. My advice would be to not wind people up and avoid/ignore some comments yourself. Don't send any knee jerk replies and talk football. Do what celebrities do when they get themselves in trouble say 'no comment' or rather just don't comment on subjects related to your scandel

Just don't reply to them because that only irks them more as it fills up the thread with angry talk totally not football related, this further infuriates people. For your sakes it is best to lay low, post a bit less and only talk football. Don't retaliate to any abusive comments directed at you, this is critical.

Yet I haven't used his account for a long time now.
Apparently some of his 'mates' are on here and I was giving him a bad name.
I understand that, but you are "accusing" me of being the likes of Udit/JohnD/BP/NasriJack/Jack Romero, because why? I have the same name as some of them.

me thinks its a temporary thing with Bos avb was trying out a new combo. Ivanovic wasnt that great, if Ivanovic had that OG, people would be saying Bos out. He willl play next game as AVB would have seen some flaws in Ivanovic including that near OG. Also Ivanovic was played because to match up with Junior. Its like the whole Rooney playing mid thing. Everyone calm down as The Boss will be back!

High backline with defensive liabilty like Bos isnt helpful either...IVA is a solid RB/CB..he may not bombared a lot ...but he isnt a defensive liabilty...AVB will surely bring the defensive stability back to the squad i feel.

    Good article Mark.
I'm happy to put the RVP saga to bed now. Happy because FPL have changed the wording of their point scoring criteria to state clearly what they mean.
Whilst some may disagree, I think the previous wording was ambiguous to say the least. At least the whole affair has brought about some clarity from FPL in their rules now.
    Keep on keepin on!

The plan was always to bring in Baines this week for Bosingwa (ever since I did the reverse when Everton's fixtures turned poo).

Part of the question is whether or not its worth taking a 4 point hit moving Petrov in addition to Bosingwa.

Cpatain choices for next GW? I'm tempted to go for either RVP or Vaart, but can't ignore Rooney on the other hand. I feel RVP is worth a punt. He's been in a great form, scoring goals week in, week out, and Norwich have been conceding lot of goals as well, 6 goals in two games on the trot. Only concern though, is that RVP wilol playing two games in the space of 4 days with his NT, then flow back to England to have a lunch time KO at Norwich. On the other hand, VDV will be playing at home on Monday night, few days more to rest than RVP. Going for Rooney depends on where he is going to player, if it's a deeper role again, NO CHANCE.

Do you remember game with Chelsey? Lot of people did not captain him, although he had good form. And he was like a hurricaine.

If you discount defenders it comes down to
Suarez > Hernandez or Mata > Lampard (which ever I don't choose will be done GW13) as I just realised I don't need to free up cash by getting Bendy (and dont really want to)

Hmmmm, I've pondered this for a while myself with Rooney not scoring well...I don't think there's anyway of telling. With him being 10mil I think that's too expensive for a "rotation" threat. Returns of 6, 4, 9, 2 aren't great at all for that price...I'd wait and see if he gets consistent starts. United's good run of fixtures is so lengthy we can afford to wait I think.

Please help. Am in a bit of bother in a head to head league. I need to make some transfers and really need to win the next couple of games.
    My team (don't laugh) is:

    Begovic (Vorm)
    Bos/Enrique/Warnock/Simpson/Gabbidon
    VdV/Sliva/Plikington/Petrov/(Ferguson)
    VPersie/Agbon/Aguerro

I have 2 million and 1 free transfer

I was thinking Petrov and Bos for Bale and Brown.
or maybe Petrov and Bos for Eagles and Jones

    But really not sure.

Is their some lingering feeling your 'bargain' non playing man will get some game time? Well forget that, he's off on loan.

surely there isn't a bigger problem than a player that gets you 0 guarenteed every week? Shift now I saw...when the snow comes before the wildcard you will need that 15th player....I recommend upgrading to Joe Allen. N Dyer or a QPR Norwich mid. You won't regret it.

Not an issue, us Ferguson owners knew he wouldn't play. Hopefully he goes down in price so on my wildcard i can sell & buyback cheaper.

Actually profited in points from having him, wouldn't have been able to afford certain combinations of players without him.

Ferguson needs a special flag of his own showing a football standing idly by a ball not kicking it. Seriously would a red flag make any difference? Hey look that bloke that never plays, guess what he's never gonna play.

There would be a beautiful irony if Ferguson is loaned to my team Brighton and I have to cheer him on after ridiculing him savagely for the last three months.

Even bigger irony if he can't make the first team of the side he is loaned to.

I enjoyed putting this together so hope you guys like it 🙂

Quite interesting how one week the combo of Mata, VDV and Silva brings LOADS of points most weeks, the higher priced mids appear to reap the benefits! (Aside from Nani 👿 )

    GW6 - Mata, 3, VDV, 10, Silva, 6 = 19
    GW7 - Mata, 5, VDV, 8, Silva, 6 = 19
    GW8 - Mata, 6, VDV, 10, Silva, 1 = 17
    GW9 - 1, 15, 12 = 28
    GW10 - 10, 10, 5 = 25
    GW11 - 3, 2, 8 = 13

Average - 20.16 points per week, 6.7 points per player.

    Darn impressive consistency that.

personally I think I should get Bosingwa out this GW and depending on internationals maybe take a hit to go adebayor->chickpea/dzecko

He's been better in real terms than in fantasy terms, to be fair. He's strong, wins headers and holds the ball up well, which allows the rest of the midfield to work around him. Spurs have long been missing that... perhaps not a centre forward's on-paper role but with VDV and Bale doing the job of scoring goals it's working alright.

Once (...if) his finishing gets back to the level he's shown before he'll be devastating as part of that unit. Some of the chances he's failed to even get on target in the last few have been shocking, though, he should have put more than a few in the back of the net. No excuses for that.

              COYS!

Im slowly starting to become more convinced with Lampard, I was one of these who captained him all season in the past. He appears to be getting back to his best. At 11.7 he could be seen as a bargain considering his old prices over 12 and 13

I think he will tbh. I am going for a city striker for one GW and seeing how Rooney performs away to the Swans. After that he'l come in if he's playing up top. their fixtures are too good to ignore. hopefully by then he'l be 11.9. I'm only saying this once though cause i know there'l be people lurking on my WC comments, so if you see my WC team with Roo up tope it means city striker for GW12 then Roo 🙂

Just two 2 FT and -8 p to get rid of Given, Dyer, Nani, Agbon.

Please tell me that it has been worth:

    Vorm (Krul)
    ShawX - Company - S.Taylor (Simpson - N.Taylor)
    VDV - Silva - Lampard - Sess - Walters
    RvP - Sturidge - Klasnic

    0FT, 1.1M in bank

Will play 3-5-2 or 3-4-3 since I have players to rotate and have money to change if needed.

    After GW12 will upgrade Simpson.

Please tell me that -8 p hit has been worth it.

The crystal ball is a bit cloudy atm, so any reassurance of your 8 point hit is 12 days off...
Not so sure about taking a hit on a goalie, very risky, especially as Vorm and Krul have Utd and City as their next game!
The other 3 look a bit risky too, imo i'd have just done your 2 FT, but too late now... you're in the lap of the gods!

I know, just used 2 FT. But suddently decided tobring Lamp in, so had to do two more.... Classic example of 2 weeks planning and suddenly all brokes in few seconds.... Yes, I could save 4 p for goalie, but he was the first transfer out of four. Warning for all, do not do it like this!

Why do you think other three are bit risky? Lamp, Sess will score...

"Losing Bradley Johnson to a head knock was a blow. He's a good player and he's been in exceptional form for us, but when you get a bit of concussion and you can't remember, it's safer just to come off." Lambert said.

Glad he's fine as it seems he came off as a precaution. Gutted he was focred off that early in the game though. I really felt he would do smth as I only signed him last week.

A lot of people trying to get rid of Bosingwa and I am one of them…

I only have one transfer – is it worth downgrading Given to get in Kompany (I'm pretty set on getting him back)

    My defence looks like this…

    Given / Vorm
Bosingwa , Enrique, Simpson, Shawcross, Brown

Al-Habsi / Kompany in for Bosingwa / Given.

    Worth it?
