Scout Scribbles- Injury Boost for Gunners

Thomas Vermaelen and Mikel Arteta are on course for comebacks against Manchester United this Sunday. Daniel Agger is available for Liverpool’ strip to Bolton, Robbie Keane is edging closer to his first Aston Villa start, while Daniel Sturridge is growing frustrated with his role on the right for Chelsea.

Arsenal are set to go into the Emirates clash with Man United with both Thomas Vermaelen and Mikel Arteta in contention. The return of Arteta will come as no surprise – he missed the defeat at Swansea with what was described by Arsene Wenger as a “mild” calf strain. Vermaelen is perhaps an unexpected boost, however. The Belgian has been sidelined with a calf injury since New Year’s Eve but is now set to reinforce a beleaguered back-four ahead of the visit of the champions. Vermaelen could well find himself at left-back, as the Gunners continue to stave off defensive injuries across their rear-guard.

Elsewhere in the Emirates treatment room, the Guardian reports that Jack Wilshere’s recovery from a fractured ankle has amazed the club’s medical staff. Wilshere is reportedly pushing for a return to action ahead of the Champions League clash with Milan on February 15. Wilshere underwent surgery in September and was expected to be out of the picture until March but, having shifted the return date to February, Arsene Wenger has recently suggested the midfielder will be in line for a return even earlier.

The Guardian go on to state that Wilshere “requires at least two further weeks of conditioning before he will be considered for selection”. That would hand Wenger a selection headache around Gameweek 24, which could well see Aaron Ramsey’s starting role under threat. The Welshman has started all but two of the Gunners’ league games this term but with Mikel Arteta and Alex Song seemingly settled in the deeper midfield positions, Ramsey and Wilshere will likely be vying for the more attacking role, though there’s also the possibility of Arteta moving further forward, with Wilshere sitting alongside Song.

Man United look likely to turn up at the Arsenal with Anders Lindegaard between the sticks. The Danish stopper has now started the last three matches – the first time that he has been given the nod ahead of David De Gea for three consecutive games. Today’s press is awash with quotes from the keeper, shedding some light on his relationship with De Gea and emphasising Lindegaard’s desire to keep the number one jersey.

It has been very good for both of us. Every time we play, the last guy to wish the keeper good luck is the other keeper. We have a very good relationship and I enjoy working with him. ..But it says a lot for me that I am keeping him out of the team and I am very proud of what I have made out of this…It is the first time I have played three games in a row and that is what I want, to play as much as possible, but I don’t need a definition of my position.

Fantasy managers will be monitoring the situation carefully. Right now, coverage of United’s defensive potential has been gained by the acquisition of Phil Jones or even the cheaper Johnny Evans. Lindegaard offers an alternative route but one which is somewhat blighted by the doubt surrounding the rotation with De Gea. Having appeared to play second fiddle to De Gea earlier in the season, the Dane now appears to be in possession of the role, but Fantasy investors will surely remain cautious.

Kenny Dalglish confirmed this morning that Daniel Agger will be available for selection ahead of the weekend trip to Bolton. The Dane missed last week’s home clash against Stoke with what his managers described as an “ongoing“ problem but is back to bolster the defence for Saturday evening’s Reebok showdown. Jamie Carragher made a rare appearance in the first XI against the Potters but with Agger striking up such a solid partnership with Martin Skrtel, Carragher is likely to step down to the bench.

Alex McLeish is considering giving Robbie Keane his first Villa start this weekend after the loan star impressed in training. Keane, who notoriously has a knack of scoring against former clubs, could line up against Wolves, the team where he started his career, in the crucial midlands derby on Saturday. Priced at just 5.0, Keane could be a decent shout as a cut-price differential, with a home clash against QPR to follow. McLeish admitted:

We’ve got another few days of training and Robbie’s been looking sharp so I’ve got food for thought for the weekend. He has brought the link-up skills to the team and has struck up a good rapport with Stephen Ireland as well.

West Brom new boy Scott Allan could be set to make his debut for the midlanders after impressing Roy Hodgson. The Baggies in something of a winter slump right now, having scored a single goal in their last four fixtures, and reports suggest the winger may be set to freshen up the first XI for the trip to Stoke. Hodgson is clearly impressed with his new acquisition, saying:

We’ve got young Scott who is doing well. His opening week with us has been interesting. He has hit the ground running.

Wolves’ exit from the FA Cup to neighbours Birmingham left Mick McCarthy seething. The Wolves boss rang the changes for the tie, with Christophe Berra the only player remaining from the side that earned a point at Spurs last weekend. To an extent, McCarthy’s hand was forced with injuries robbing him of the likes of Roger Johnson, Matt Jarvis, Kevin Foley and Dave Edwards. McCarthy indicated that he remained hopeful that at least a couple of that quartet will be in contention for the visit of local rivals Villa this weekend.

It will be a different team that plays against Villa…If I haven’t got everyone fit for the game then of course there will be others considered…Hopefully we’ll have the ones available who were out tonight but all the players need to support each other because it’s a big, important game…I think I’ll certainly have Roger and Foles and Jarvo but Dave Edwards is probably the bigger doubt of them all.

Steven Fletcher came on as a late second half sub last night and, while he failed to find the net, came through unscathed.. Subject of our Watchlist article yesterday, Fletcher has so far commanded over 60,000 transfers in, more than any other player in the Gameweek.

An article in the Times this morning claims that Daniel Sturridge is growing increasingly frustrated at a lack of opportunities in his preferred centre-forward role. The story suggests that Sturridge is concerned that his Euro 2012 prospects are being damaged by his role on the right-flank in Chelsea’s lineup and that he’s pushing hard to be given the nod ahead of Fernando Torres and Didier Drogba. With the Ivorian away at the African Cup of Nations, Torres has looked sharp in the central role, while Sturridge has sat out the last two matches with a hip injury. He was an unused sub in the narrow win over Sunderland and will be in line to return to the side for the trip to Norwich this weekend. Whether he starts on the right remains to be seen – certainly Torres’ display against the Black Cats was encouraging enough to suggest that he will hold that position.

Damn you, new post! Sorry for repeat:

Assuming Cabaye is going to be out for a couple of weeks, and with a current front 8 of:
    Silva Bale Nani Cabaye Allen
    Adebeyor RvP Sturridge
    What would you reccommend?
Was hoping just to do Allen -> McClean…but with Ade and Cabaye both out (and an awful defense), i think i’ll need two changes…

Rotating Barton and Graham I take it? Good idea.
Defence looks good - I'll assume you've worked out rotation there.
I'd personally not WC somebody in who hasn't played after an injury yet - Schwarzer could always face a set-back and you'll need to make a transfer. How about Given? Very good rotation with Sorensen.

        Baines Capt anyone?

Blackburn have lost their greatest goal threat and two of their star defenders are unsettled.

Logically, that would increase the chances of Baines getting a Cleansheet and scoring a goal at home against one of the weakest teams in the league.

More defensive returns? If Vermaelen had got through 7 more minutes against QPR then he'd have one less CS than Huth in 582 minutes of football.
And as far as attacking threat is concerned - Huth 1 goal, 1 assist in 1529 minutes, Vermaelen 3 goals, 1 assist in 947 minutes

Cheaper he may be... and the defensive returns i cant disagree with... but Huth has played in nearly every game this season and only scored 1 goal...

Vermaelen has played in only half of Arsenals games and got 3... that makes him a much more potent attacking threat in my book...

And at home I believe only Swansea and City have conceded less.
Plus don't forget that Arsenal stat is massively skewed by the outlier that is Old Trafford.

Because 15 of those goals came from 3 matches; Man U, Blackburn and Chelsea. Verm was out injured for all of those. Also, crazy fact, he's got more goals in the FPL than Torres this season! 🙂

that can be misleading as early on they conceded 8 and 4 vs manunited and blackburn but after verm returned they have been very tight at the back!

Also, Arsenals "dodgy" defense has kept only 1 less clean sheet than Liverpool and 2 less than 'the best defense in the league' City.
Considering their best and far most influential defender has been missing for 10 games it's really not as bad as people say..
Plus you're not considering the fact that 15 were conceded to Chelsea, United and Blackburn alone, where Vermaelen was missing for all 3 and Song (plus plenty of others) for the United game.

    Vorm (Ruddy)
    Enrique/Richards/Shotton (Simpson/Taylor)

Rate My Team if you would be so kind:

    Vorm Lindergaard

    BAE Cahill Enrique Raylor Caulker

    Silva Bale Valencia Sess Dyer

    RVP Aguero Sturridge

Have played my WC but have unlimited transfers for 2 days, so any thoughts are appreciated.

Oh yeah, I also have 0.5 in the bank

I really wanted a City defender in, but dont want to lose value on Raylor as I got him for 4.5. And he also seems to be playing in midfield nowadays so would be silly to transfer out.

Want Richards but not sure how to work it, also not too keen on Dyer, willing to swap out for Surman/ McClean/ Moses (Any other midfielder upto 5.0) as other midfield players are non-negotiable due to having got them early for great prices.

As I say, any thoughts are appreciated.

ALSO - I am keeping the Vorm/ Lindergaard rotation. Surprised at how few people have seen the light!

I never said I'm afraid of rivals, I just stated up there that I'm unsure how to link a team to a profile. However I did provide a link to the facebook league through which that person was able to find my team. Now I don't usually use this website, but have found discussion here interesting and enlightening.

However it seems certain people want to respond to sincere posts with sarcastic, pretentious comments which are unhelpful. Now when faced with this I will respond. And I'm fully aware it's a game, and a rather fun one at that.

Your comment is frankly rude and unnecessary.

My comment was not sarcastic or pretenious. Given my rank I tend to avoid giving direct advice, like suggesting that Krul//Mignolet is a better combo, because I am aware that I am quite often wrong on that.

However, what I said is true. The mechanics of the majority work such that a crowd will always find a succesful solution. So if the majority reject that combo, which they do, then it is almost certainly wrong.

If you want to reject my advice then that is fine, but I do not see at what point it became appropriate for you to insult me petily.

Alright you want actual *helpful* advice

Lindegaard is not a definite starter and Vorm's fixtures are a lot harder in the second half of the season. That combo is destined to fail.

Cahill and Raylor are not nailed on. Your suggestion that Raylor is playing in midfield now is just ridiculous. Newcastle had a slight issue that they had no players on the bench who had been trained to play CM, so Raylor who had some experience stepped in. Now Pardew will have trained someone else to play there, Guthrie and Gosling would make a fine pair with Vukivec or Ben Arfa ahead of them.

Doubling up on Swansea is dangerous for the same reason as mentioned above.

BAE has hard fixtures so is not gonna keep that many cleanies this half, so I would suggest you sell him for Richards. Simple isnt it.

But of course you wont read any of this because you just admitted you are too stubborn.

Even in light of your passive-aggressive tone I appreciate your opinion.

That doesn't mean I agree with you. I still feel Raylor offers a good attacking option.

Also, I feel Fergie will have to give in to common sense and give Lindergaard the starting keeper spot as he has impressed massively when given the chance, in comparison to numerous displays of plainly bad decision making from De Gea.

        Only time will tell.

        Thank you for your opinion.

Fletcher. Maybe Morison can hold his place when injured & Graham can hold his place when Morison's rotated.

ok ENR, hypothetical, you are on your WC, do you bring in sturridge? i understand keeping if you already have him and arent WCing, but as it stands right now, bit of an unnecessary risk when you have your choice of any squad you want?

TBH I won't believe anything to do with Studge until I hear it out of AVB's mouth. Expect him to answer this in the press conference! Plus Ramires isn't a good winger & doesn't have that freedom to sprint enough down the right. We badly need him at CM.

    Hi Guys,

Is Ade set to drop anytime soon? Is Aguero set to rise? It’s just my selling price for Ade is 9.2 & Aguero is 11.1. If they drop and rise I will be beat. Was wanting to keep Ade until his home game with Wigan.

    Thanks, folks.

I'm keeping hold of him on the bench if that helps!

Thanks mate. I am playing 5 in midfield - really fancy McClean to do something this weekend. Do you have any idea if their prices will change in next number of days ?

Can't see Ade falling but maybe Aguero rising. Price falls seem harder to predict unless that's just me!

When would this be by, mate? Will have to get Aguero in for Everton match instead of Ade Vs. Wign, in that case....

Is bosingwa nailed on? Where does cahill fit in? Anyone have a good sense on who avb will start in defense in next few fixtures?

Has anyone heard anything at all on Brown's injury? Thought he'd be back quickly, but doesn't seem that way. Likely to play?
