Watchlist

The Watchlist – Leighton Baines

Leighton Baines is like an expensive pair of jeans. You know the stitching, the cut and street-credibility are all better than the rest, but the price tag just seems that little bit too steep. Perhaps, you tell yourself, that pair from Primark isn’t that bad after all.

With a price tag of 7.8, the left-back is seen as a luxury that Fantasy managers can ill afford but, as Everton settle into the second half of the season in familiar resurgent fashion, Baines is starting to look worth every penny of his hefty price.

So what are Fantasy managers getting with Leighton Baines? First of all, starts are assured; last season he played every match, a feat he is set to once again achieve this term after failing to miss a single game. In terms of creativity, he notched up 11 assists in the previous campaign but, rather surprisingly, he has just two assists this time round, as Everton’s front men have too often failed convert his regular supply from the flank.

Instead, you are getting a considerable goal threat. Incredibly, for a defender, he is Everton’s top Premier League scorer with four goals to his name, just one less than his tally last season. Baines’ spot-kick duties, allied with his share of free kicks, have seen him notch some of the Premier League’s most spectacular goals in recent campaigns, most recently during Everton’s Gameweek 30 clash away to Swansea. His wonder free kick in last week’s win at the Liberty Stadium helped him accrue 15 points – a third double-digit haul of the season. Indeed, for defenders, only five-goal Thomas Vermaelen has proven more prolific in front of goal than the Toffees left-back.

Purchasers of Baines are also getting the added potential of clean sheets. An upturn in defensive performance has seen David Moyes’ side concede a single goal in their last four at home, snuffing out the likes of Chelsea, City and Tottenham. Further analysis of the stats shows Everton have conceded more than a single goal just three times since Gameweek 12 and, with a mere 32 goals against, have the fourth most impressive defensive record in the league to date.

With a favourable fixture list until the end of the season (WBA, nor, SUN,sto, man, FUL, wol, NEW) there is clear potential for Baines to increase his defensive returns, with perhaps only the trip to United in Gameweek 35 set to provide a stern test for Everton’s rearguard.

Bonus points also come with a Baines purchase. His bonus point tally of 15 is the highest of any defender in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game. He also has the pedigree to avoid flagging at the end of the season. As Chris Glover’s recent Fantasy Football Scout article A Season Of Two Halves, showed there were only two top performers from the first half of the previous season who equalled and/or bettered their display as the season reached its end; Baines and City’s Joe Hart. With 124 points on the board, he may struggle to overhaul his 2010/11 total of 178 but he is, nonetheless, firmly on course to finish as the top scoring defender once again, currently sitting just one point behind Benoit Assou-Ekotto in the rankings.

With Everton in form and new boy Nikica Jelavic, in particular, looking capable of finding the net on a regular basis, Baines’ attacking output clearly has the potential to increase. There’s no doubt the Croatian’s keen eye for goal has already bolstered the Toffees frontline and, with someone of a more clinical nature converting his supply from out wide, Baines could be afforded plenty opportunity over the final couple of months to boost those paltry two assists.

Price of Baines puts me off massively. Although he obviously has a greater chance than other defenders of scoring or assisting, but dunno if it happens frequently enough to justify the money, which could be spent elsewhere and help gain more points than Baines returns. Everton have decent fixtures/form, but I'd rather spend 4.6 million on Hibbert and get the same points as Baines most weeks.

      GW30 backwards

      Hibbert - 7,2,0,0,2,1,2,6 - 20

      Baines - 15,2,0,6,2,6,5,7 - 43

      Pretty big difference there.

How many games is that where he does something extra than what a defender usually does? How does he compare to Kompany, Evans and Vermaelen?

In the context of the question he does alot extra in comparison to his team mate. Factor in an upturn in their form and fixtures and the potential is there to score even better.

half of that difference is where Baines played got 2 cleansheets though so 12 points. whereas hibbert only got 1 point from those 2 games

Points are points no matter how they are achieved. RVP would be on more than 221 if he scored against Villa or Everton but he never. With Baines on pens and free-kicks I think he will double Hibberts score between now and the end of the season.

yeah but cleansheets are given to the whole defence its not an individual assist or goal so providing they are playing points will be even just in terms of defensive returns. he is certainly an interesting option though with the form and fixtures of Everton on the rise, we will see 😉

I should have prepared for GW34 a bit more. At the moment, even if I bring in a GW34 every week until then, I still wont have a full 11.

I'm guessing lots of us are in a similar position?

I'll probably have 3 Man U and 3 Arsenal. I think I'll just stick with having 10 players. (2 defenders). I don't see much extra value in taking a hit to get another player in.

I may change my mind closer to the time.

Lads I'm on the one way street to oblivion but enjoying making reckless transfers since the demise started.

Question on fixtures for ye. Chelsea will prob be playing Barca the week after their semi so their semi could be fixed for the Friday night. Anyone know if Liverpool, Everton or Spurs were scheduled to meet about that time? Could be refixed for the Tues or Wed night of that week. Also there's a full list of matches down in FF for the Cup Final weekend. Could the finalists refixed games be before the Final at all? Prob the week after methinks?

Got Jelavic and captained him against WBA. Hearing good things about him but staying on the reckless slope!

He is 2nd in goals and 1st in Bonus, but the sample seems so small.

In the end way to pricey for me.

Cahill at 5.4 with 3 goals is way more appealing.

on a more serious note, baines is high risk high reward. i want him, and im on my WC so all options are on the table.

      Vorm - Bogdon
Evans - Verm - Distin (caulker kelly)
      Demps Walcott Bale Valencia (siggy)
      Cisse RVP Roon

Will be very motivated as he's hoping to start for Coatia in the Euros. Everton have a fairly handy run in. Downgrade Walcott to Song. Walcott is either a feast or a famine.

he just doesn't have the IT factor, or maybe it's Everton that are lacking the IT

The problem I have with bringing Baines or Verm into my team right now is it means I can't get Bale in this week - of the 3 I think he's the most essential purchase right?

Options appear to be below - which is best?!

    a) Surman & Suarez -> Bale & Pog (2 week punt on Pog before he becomes P Cisse with a Skrtel/Enrique downgrade).

    b) Enrique & Shotton -> Vermaelen & Cahill, or

    c) Skrtel & Enrique -> Baines & Vermaelen

    Migs, Bogdan
    Skrtel, Enrique, JEvans, Caulker, Shotton
    Dempsey, Walcott, Valencia, Siggy, Surman
    RVP, Rooney, Suarez

Yeah I'm between a) and b). Chelsea's rotation with Cahill is a concern. Think I'm gonna do a) with Enrique -> Cahill in GW32 and then Pog -> Cisse in GW33. Looks like they're nailed on for a DGW at some stage so time to start thinking about bringing in CHE and NEW players!

How about Baines & Sagna? Sagna is .7 cheaper and has only 2 points less than Verm over the last 9 weeks.
I just knocked off a 55 point deficit in my mini-league in 3 weeks ( largely thanks to Evans and Walcott ) so 48 is nothing to worry about yet. Good luck.

Hmm, they are differentials to my ML leader, but IF i go for an Arsenal defender I think Verm is worth the extra over Sagna. The fact I'd only play Pog this week, bench him next week and then get rid in GW33 is swaying me towards b) now!!

You have to get rid of Drenthe...the compassionate leave story is a cover up for him breaking club rules again and going out drinking last Thursday. There were rumours of his loan agreement being torn up as he was on his last warning after his disappearance to Amsterdam around Christmas time (Everton again covered it up by saying he was injured) however they might not do anything that drastic as long as they are still in the Cup. Moyes is fuming though and I doubt he will feature in the starting XI for a couple of weeks at least.

The 3 luxury defender spots in descending order. (Pros + and Cons -)

    1. Baines 7.8m

+ Everton have found great defensive form of late.
++ Is on free kicks, penalties and corners
++ Often gets up the field to be involved in the attack.
    - Might not play GW34
    - Expensive

    2. Verm 6.8m

++ Often gets up the field to be involved in the attack.
++ He is a colossus at corner time
+ Arsenal has an excellent run of fixtures.
    + Will definitely play GW34
    - Arsenal defense
    - Expensive

    3. Cahill 5.4m

+ Chelsea have found great defensive form of late.
+ Sometimes gets up the field to be involved in the attack.
+ He is a threat at corner time
+ Chelseas next two fixtures are excellent and Cahill should start because Luiz will play CL
++ Is cheap for a Chelsea defender
    - Rotation threat
    - Probably won't play GW34

Being part of the Everton defence is probably more of a negative than it is for Arsenal.

They have the 4th best defensive record. If you read the article you would also notice they rarely concede more than 1 goal. Having said that they might be fairly even in terms of clean sheets between now and the end of the season

I think that he will score this week. Long term though, I really think you should look to switch him out. He is still playing well, but the formation we play isn't good for him in FPL terms.

    Alreet deadzone.

If I get Baines, I will only be able to play with 10 if the GW34 games aren't played that midweek. Of the players that I will have missing, I won't really want to transfer out Barfa, Bale or Dave. IF there is a missing game week what should I do?

    1) Play with 10
    2) Buy Big Verm this week rather than Baines (but Mrs China Mag has him, and we like to mix our differentials)
    3) Buy Baines for WBA, nor, SUN, then switch him out, probably for Big Verm or Kompany

I really hope we here confirmation on those fixtures before the deadline tomorrow!!

Be daring and ignore the big defenders. Get a cheap defender in instead (I assume for a pool defender) or just keep your pool defender for the AVL game

The cash is burning a hole in my pocket though. It was going to be used to upgrade barfa to VDV, or Dave to adebayor, but after the west brom game, I have high hopes for the toon trident. If you get the chance, can you have a look over my team and see where else the money might be invested.

Sell Santon for sure. Senderos at least has a good couple of fixtures coming up. I think you should sell your stoke keeper too. Verm is probably the best bet in your situation though. Is safe and has the fixtures and will play GW34

I'm leaning towards selling senderos to be honest. Santon is just being rested (taken out of the firing line). He is still the long term best option at left back. I'm worried hughes has senderos' spot until he messes up.

Definitely want to get rid of sorenson, but as a golden rule is never take a hit for a keeper, its difficult to find the time to do it!

I'm doing something similar and just playing with 10. I doubt missing 1 player for 1 week will be much of a big deal in the long term. Especially when it's a missing defender.

Is it silly to bring Pog in this week if only planning to play him this week, bench him next week and then transfer him out in GW33? When I put it like that,

    b) Surman & Suarez -> Bale & Pog

      Tevez vs Narch
      Rooney vs Villa
      RVP vs Wigan
      McClean / Sess vs Wolves

With the right captain that's nearly 100 points before you've started!

Are people really struggling to field 11 for GW 34? Especially in defense?

    Vorm
    Verm, Evans. Caulker

    does quite nicely, right?

Add Van Persie, Rooney, siggy, and valencia, which arguably all legitimate teams should have (says the guy without siggy) and thats 8 right there. Mclean/Sess makes 9. (10 if you have both)

Shouldn't be that hard, especially in defense.

I will have Richards, Evans and Rangel

But unfortunately Everton just beat sunderland. So now I have no keeper as Begovic and Krul are now both out. Had Sunderland beaten Everton then Migs would be out so that would have stuffed up all those that had Migs and Krul.

I have 8 as things stand, but seeing as I think 2 games will slot back into midweek, that will probably go up to 9/10...

And if needed I'll just bring in McClean/Sess... or maybe a Citeh defender, cos they'll have Wolves next game...

      No dramas...

Need some help here please. Current team with 2FT & 0.0m in the bank:

    Krul, Mignolet
    Evans, Luiz, Simpson, Caulker, Enrique
    Bale, Walcott, Valencia, Sigurdsson, Miyaichi
    RVP, Rooney, Holt

Considering a 4pt hit to do Luiz, Enrique, Holt out for Cahill, Walker, Jelavic. Good moves? Can't stretch to BAE unfortunately. Or would Sagna be a better option than Walker?
