Euro 2012

Captain Poll – Matchday Three – Day Four

Three of the top four in the Matchday Three, Day Three Captain Poll picked up attacking returns this evening but, with six points the most Antonio Cassano, Andrea Pirlo and Andres Iniesta could muster, many Fantasy managers may well be willing to twist.

With Spain and Italy now through to the last eight, tomorrow brings the final matches of the group stages. France, England, and Ukraine are all still in with a shout of progressing, while Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Sweden have the small matter of pride to play for.

England need just a draw against tournament co-hosts Ukraine to progress to the final eight and will be boosted by the return of Wayne Rooney – Roy Hodgson confirmed earlier that the United man will start tomorrow, now that his two-match suspension has been served. Danny Welbeck and Andy Carroll are set to tussle for the remaining forward slot after both found the net against Sweden, while Ashley Young’s contribution could be vital from out wide. Steven Gerrard also comes into contention after returning a pair of assists for his Fantasy owners thus far and Theo Walcott’s goal and assist display against the Swedes could earn him a start, after Hodgson revealed he is over his hamstring scare.

Oleg Blokhin’s side are still sweating on the fitness of Andriy Shevchenko. The former Milan and Chelsea man is rated as 50-50 due to a knee problem, though seems the man most likely to breach the English rearguard. Yevhen Konoplyanka and Andriy Yarmolenko must step up their games from the wide positions if Blokhin’s side are to prosper – the duo have produced just one assist between them thus far. Marko Devic is favourite to step in if Shevchenko fails to make it, lining up as the lone frontman with Andriy Voronin tucked in behind.

A change of system against Ukraine saw Jeremy Menez come into consideration for France. With Laurent Blanc changing to a 4-2-3-1, the winger grabbed a goal and outperformed the likes of Samir Nasri and Franck Ribery in the 2-0 win – if he can maintain a role in Blanc’s first XI, Menez could prosper against a Sweden side that have lost both their opening matches. Karim Benzema saved the day for many Fantasy managers last time out by picking up a pair of assists – he has yet to find the net but, with plenty of creators surrounding him, tomorrow night could be the time to break his scoring duck.

For Erik Hamren’s side, Zlatan Ibrahimovic is always the lead contender. The Sweden boss has already ruled out Johan Elmander and Rasmus Elm, meaning Markus Rosenberg is likely to lead the line, with Ola Toivonen on the left – both could be decent differentials, though whether they can breach a French backline that has conceded just a single goal thus far is another matter entirely. Seb Larsson and Kim Kallstrom’s creativity were crucial in the qualifiers and both have provided an assist apiece already.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

From the QF's onwards, does extra time count towards the point scoring?

I assume penalty shoot outs dont count.

Yes they count, but my question is, does your defender lose his clean sheet if conceding in extra time after keeping it during the normal 90?

Well if the point scoring does count after the 90 mins, then no clean sheet if you concede in extra time.

True. Czechs could shock the Portugese yet but just have them and Greeks there for their low prices. I 'll probably downgrade Ronaldo and Siva, poor overall return for massive prices. Will be keeping a closeo eye on Wellbeck and Carroll v Ukraine. Nicely priced. Maybe even Rooney but can't see him scoring more than one when he won't be match-fit first game back. If I downgrade the two upfront it'll be bye bye Cabaye!

Quite high chance Grounderz I would say. At the moment I'm going with Neuer and Cech, 2 cheap as chips Greek defenders, Selassie, Abate and Alba. I'll need 7 at least of my 15 to make the semis but can make a team with just 3 going through. Barring suspensions and injuries I' m guaranteed 4 with at least one from each quarter finalist.

Then looks like every plan of ours to make for the semis and finals have got to be Germany as they remain top favourite to go through. Ozil, Podolski or Muller? One thing for sure is that Gomez is a must-have.

I have Neuer, Schweinsteiger and Muller. Gomez is too pricey, can use the cash elsewhere. Plus the quarters will be tight games not high scoring, not as many points for the top scoring players. 4 Germans in one game costing about a third of your whole team and they can't all give a high points return in the Greek game. Whether they get to Semi or Final barring injury or suspension is just speculation for me. I'm trying to concentrate on the quarters for now.

Is that order of valour competition still going? They should give it to whoever captained Keith Andrews. They got a very bad points return but at least Keith got stuck in to the opposition which isn't someting the rest of the Ireland team were interested in doing.

No comment. When Germany, Portugal, England and Spain concede goals, like they have done in the groups, then you'll have your answer. Downgrade 3 of your defence including a German defender and Nani and upgrade your midfield. Conceding a goal in extra time also counts against your defence.

Question is, who will make it to the finals? That's when you have to pick the majority of players likelier to proceed to the next round. It's a high risk and if it pays off, that's great news for those with a happy squad in the semis and finals.

You know, I can really see a Germany - Portugal final.

Portugal are built to take down a team like Spain. Deep and quality central defenders, strong energetic centre midfield, and fast and direct wingers.

They'll sit, soak up pressure, then break really fast. They tore into the Dutch defense, and Spain look vulnerable to pace.

I saw your previous posts about the QF and that we should in corporate some 4.0. Like you said, will probably get the 4.0 czech keeper. I have Torres, Gomez and Ronaldo upfront is that too much. I don't see midfielders getting many points. So strong defense, decent mid and strong forward is my guess for QF?

That's good to know! but for defense which team do you fancy from. I'm thinking 2 from germany (1 keeper), 2 from spain, one from france and one from italy. Not very convinced with England's defense but that may change tommorrow depending on their performance and if they finish top of their table.

            Germany.

Remember, you're also tipping a team to make the semi-finals so your players don't get eliminated. I'm most confident in Germany making the semi-finals, so buying German defenders will save you transfers in the semi-finals. Boateng and Hummels look good because they're also not on yellow cards.

The Czechs will trouble Portugal. They depend on which side of the bed Ronaldo rolls out of. I think you're exaggerating their strengths, conceded 4 goals in 3 games. Italy will go further than Portugal and their bag of trick.

I dunno about that. You have to take it one game at a time. Italy will play the winners of Group D which will most likely be France. Do you really feel they're a better bet to beat France than Portugal are to beat the Czechs?

Yes. France are beatable and the Italians are the old dogs for the hard road. I would expect a tight physical game between them.France have won nothing in 12 years. Portugal will be strong favourites against the Czechs but less favourites than Holland v Denmark and Russia v Greece were. I think if the Czechs can rattle Ronaldo by whatever means they have a chance. There's been upsets so far and maybe a few to come. Ukraine could be one!

Group B is shaping up nicely. Holland have pulled back to within 3 pts of Denmark, and have more to play today.

Holland: Lescott x 2, Mexes, Nasri, Yarmalenko, Benzema, Wellbeck, Ibra (= 8 to play)
Denmark: Debuchy, Young, Konoplyanka, Gerrard, Benzema x 2 ( = 6 to play)

Both have already played one captain (Ronaldo). It really could be anybody's game!!

      Yeah I've done the calculations.

It's not looking very good for you.

Sweden are all but mathematically through.
If Germany win, we're through too regardless of your results because even with a win Netherlands probably won't get through because you have an inferior goal difference to both Germany and Sweden.

If Netherlands lose, Germany go through group winners with a win.

The only real way you guys are likely to go through is if we don't win. If we lose, and you win, you go through as runners-up.
