Euro 2012

Scout Notes – Quarter Finals – Day Four

Italy outplay England from start to finish over 120 minutes but still require spot-kicks to book a place in the last four of Euro after a resilient display by Roy Hodgson’s men. The goalless draw was at least beneficial to Fantasy managers, with both defences returning clean sheets for their owners last night – the Azzurri now square up to Germany on Thursday, while England board the next flight home:

England 0 Italy 0
Roy Hodgson kept faith in the same XI that saw off Ukraine in the previous match, with Wayne Rooney partnering Danny Welbeck up top. The former looked well off the pace throughout, though, and managed just two efforts all game – indeed, as an attacking force, England were virtually non-existent, with a single shot on target all evening. Joe Hart picked up eight points, thanks to eight saves and a clean sheet, while both Joleon Lescott and Glen Johnson benefitted from the recovered balls rule to produce seven points apiece. Lescott finished the tournament as England’s top points scorer with 24, just one ahead of Steven Gerrard – the skipper picked up five points last night after registering a staggering 13 recovered balls; a clear indication of just how much his side were under the cosh as he helped break up wave after wave of Italian attacks.

For Italy, Cesare Prandelli made three alterations from the game against Republic of Ireland. Leonardo Bonucci replaced the injured Giorgio Chiellini at centre-half, while Thiago Motta and Antonio Di Natale made way for Riccardo Montolivo and Mario Balotelli respectively.

Bonucci was Italy’s main performer after producing an eight point haul thanks to 11 recovered balls but Chiellini may return by Thursday, raising doubts against his acquisition. Ignazio Abate looks an absolute steal at 4.9 in the McDonald’s game – with Christian Maggio now suspended for the semis, the former’s role at right-back looks nailed-on. Federico Balzaretti also stood out, picking up a seven point return at the back and is available for 5.4 – whether you’d want to back them against the Germans, though, is another matter entirely.

Andrea Pirlo was unlucky not to grab any attacking returns – he provided six goalscoring opportunities for his team mates (equalled, intriguingly, by Claudio Marchisio) while Fantasy owners of Antonio Cassano and, in particular, Mario Balotelli will be frustrated after the pair fired 15 shots between them, with the latter managing 10. Both look likely to lead the line again on Thursday and, with so much uncertainty over Joachim Low’s forwards, look decent mid-price alternatives for those Fantasy managers who fancy the Azzurri to upset the odds, coming in at 8.0 and 8.5 respectively in the McDonald’s game.

Any ideas for the semi's? Are people banking on two teams to make it through or branch out with players from the 4 teams?

4 germans and 4 spanish, spread the rest then. use the 4 transfers then to get in other players for the final. that's the best way to look at it imo

I have 6 Spanish and 3 German. The rest is spread between the other two teams I expect to get knocked out. I worked out the transfers I would have to make in the next gameweek if Spain and Germany get through. I would have to make 8 changes, only four of which would be free!!! 🙁

Do your own analyzes. Mine in example

          Well I have:
          4 Spain, 5 German, 1 Portugal (Oliveira doesn’t count ) and 2 Italy atm.

Scenario 1 Germany and Spain goes throw all good
          Scenario 2 Germany and Portugal final then I have 5 + 1 + 4 transfers = 10 players – problem
          Scenario 3 Spain and Italy final then I have 4 + 2 + 4 transfer = 10 players – problem
Scenario 4 Italy and Portugal final ok lets face it than we are all f. up and in the same boat 😀

So if Spain and Germany don’t play the final almost everybody will have to make a hit for full 11 players

It would depend on your appetite for risk.

I am picking 12 of my players from the teams I think will win through to the final. If these teams do win through, I should score a decent points return in the semis. If they don't, I'm in trouble because in the worst case scenario, I could only have enough free transfers to give me 7 players in the final (some of which probably wouldn't play (the three squad fillers I'm picking for the semis)).

If I want to win the big screen TV, though, I need to swing for the fences, because some of the others who are there or thereabouts will be swinging for the fences, so one of us is likely to choose the right two teams and have an advantage.

It's a gamble, but you can't win the lottery unless you actually buy a ticket.

People were critical of the French, saying they ‘just didn’t have a go’ and were scared, and I thought that’s exactly what England would do.

Then we play Italy, a distinctly poorer side than the Spanish, and people are saying ‘we just didn’t have a go’. (Diamanti, a Premier League failure, had so much time on the ball, this happens so often with very average players making us look very average).

Fact is you can’t have a go without the ball. We get the ball in defence, it’s ballooned forward creating a 50/50 chance we’ll instantly lose it (and even if he wins it it’s a 50/50 we’ll pick up the loose ball), or the ball comes a striker, he tries to one-touch flick it to a winger who’s in no better a position than he was, and often lose the ball.

Just put your f*(£*$king foot on it. Find a teammate. Find space. Pass it along the floor. These aren’t difficult concepts.

Rooney barely put a foot right apart from nod a goal in from 1 foot. Gerrard looks very old now. Young was hopeless. The fact that Milner is even in the team is a shocking indictment.

At least the defence acquitted themselves well, including Hart.

Ball retention cost England. They were chasing the ball all night and when they won it back, had spent so much energy in doing so, they quickly gave it away again. Basketball, hockey, soccer, rugby...invasion games all require possession if you want to succeed.

Is it common to have to go over your four free transfers in the final? I have worked it out that I would have to make three or four extra transfers if Spain and Germany go through 🙁 If Portugal get knocked out. Can I just leave the players in my team for the final???

My plan for the SF is this. I expect Germany to beat Italy so i will go heavy on Germany with maybe 5 players, and hang onto Pirlo.

I can see Portugal beating Spain, so on that basis I will pick 4 Spaniards and 3 Portugese(excluding Olivera) meaning that unless Germany get knocked out I will have enough FTs to get 11 out.

    That is the hope anyway.

Balotelli and Torres are risks I don't fancy taking, I'll have Pirlo instead of Busquets and I've sacrificed a defender but it's tough ... have to compromise somewhere.

After lengthy discussions the Fantasy Johnstone's Paint Trophy Politburo now announces the format for this season's competition.

Two participants will be selected according to the Politburo's capricious whim, they will face each other over a yet-to-be-specified FPL gameweek, someone will presumably count up the scores and work out who won. At least one of the participants will moan at me for the rest of the season about something or other.

Yes I do I can see Portugal beating Spain. I backed Germany from the start so once i got to the qf I put Neuer in to avoid having to worry. That being said I wouldn't part with Casillas yet.

Guys, are we allowed to keep players from previous rounds? Or must you change your squad with players consisting of Italy, Spain, Germany and Portugal? Thanks

you can keep those eliminated, but if you sell them now you cant buy them back.

obviously you would only be doing this to save ££

You can keep them. Lots of us on here loaded up on 4.0m Greek players before they went out to free up money to afford 11 decent players for the Semi-Finals.

    Neuer 4.0

    Alba Perieira Bonucci 4.0 4.0

    Ozil Pirlo Fabregas Alonso Khedira

    Balotelli Ronaldo (Oliviera)

So only one sub in Oliviera. It's a bit of a different approach. I can't see many clean sheets, so I've went with one of each team at the back and tried to maximise midfield. Thoughts?

Really struggling to see any forwards I like from the final four teams..

Spain may not even play a striker, question marks over all of Germany's forwards, Ronaldo is on fire but can't see them getting much against Spain and Italy's forwards have all been a bit pants and can't see them getting much against Germany!

    Ok some transfer gossips then.

Modric looks like is on his way out, Bale said that he'll stay at least one more year.
Spurs will offer Blanc, looks like Andre won't go there (how sad I am for that 🙁 )
City are offering Skrtel and De Rossi contracts. Skrtel says he'll stay if Liv match the offer for wages
Stoke offer pay as you play contract to Owen
And some old speculations RVP to City and Tevez to Madrid but nothing concrete there so I won't put too much into it.

    Thoughts,

Owen to Stoke intrigues me depending on price. Looked sharp in the carling cup matches of recent years. Could be a good pick when Stoke have a kind run and if he's in shape and if he's cheap. Lot of ifs there though.
