Euro 2012 – McDonald’s Scout League Update

As Fantasy managers while away the hours until tomorrow night’s first semi-final of Euro 2012, we’re rolling out some updates on the progress of the Fantasy Football Scout leagues across the various Fantasy games so far. First up, we begin a look at the McDonald’s game, analysing those managers who are currently leading the way after the quarter finals:

Nenad Todorovic sits at the top of the Scout league after registering a score of 71 in the quarter-finals. Jordi Alba, Sami Khedira and Mesut Ozil were his stand out individuals, while he chose to stick with Cristiano Ronaldo as captain after the Portugal man notched against Czech Republic on day one. Nenad now sits second overall in the McDonald’s rankings, just a single point off the summit with a total of 272 points.

Isaac Lundall is next up, just a couple of points behind. His decision to double up on England and Spain defenders paid off, with captain Ashley Cole racking up 14 points in the previous round. The top two have quite a gap over the chasing pack, with Lee Harding sitting in third place on 258 points, 14 off the top. Picking a couple of Portugal’s backline against the Czechs paid off, while Joleon Lescott, Jordi Alba and captain Sami Khedira helped produce a score 69 points in the quarters – Lee is the third Fantasy manager we currently have in the overall top 10, situated in tenth place.

Surapong Lertthiratoj currently resides in fourth place in the Scout league after picking up a 62 point haul last time out. While his decision to back a couple of Italy defenders paid off, his faith in Germany’s backline backfired after Greece scored twice against Joachim Low’s outfit; Mesut Ozil vindicated Surapong’s decision to hand the playmaker the armband by picking up a 16 point captain return.

Winding up our review of the top five, we have Paul Robinson – a new entrant to the Scout league. Paul was the top scoring player of our featured Fantasy managers with a 78 point haul, thanks to his decision to hand Xabi Alonso the armband; the Spain midfielder duly obliged with a 28 point return, while the likes of Jordi Alba, Joao Pereira and Joleon Lescott boosted his tally at the back.

For the contributors, Paul (I’m talking about myself in the third person here, shocking habit) is the top scoring manager so far – sitting just outside the top 50 in the Scout league on 236 points and 604 overall. Doubling up on Spain’s defence and leaving the armband on Ronaldo was enough for 60 points. Mark is next up, sitting in 187 in the Scout league. Taking a leaf out of Spain’s book, his striker-less 5-5-0 formation harvested 64 points, with captain Joleon Lescott and Joe Hart returning 22 points between them in the goalless draw with Italy. Jonty stands in 649th place in the Scout league after a 54 point haul in the quarters. His decision to captain Italy’s Andrea Barzagli against England paid off with a 14 point return, while Jordi Alba also boosted his tally with 10 points at the back.

I got an honourable mention. Schweet. Thanks Paul.

Does anyone know if there's a prize for the knockout cup?

Nope, it wasn't very explicit. Everyone seemed to think it was a Tango ball, LOL.

Congrats on winning your first knockout match and good luck getting the cup. Exited to the #1 in the world after my triple German CS disintegrated

That's disappointing. I was hoping for a big mac or quarter pounder with cheese at the very least.

Thanks. I'm up against Nenad Todorovic in the next round, so it's going to be tough. If I had faced him in the previous round, I'd be out.

You might be out of the cup, but you're there or thereabouts for the league, so good luck with that. Don't too too well though. I want that 3D TV. 😉

Aha, I think you need to talk to Heco about that!

I took the approach in my cup match that I would punt big (triple German CS, double Spanish CS, triple Czech midfield) because I didn't want to go out with a whimper. While the jury is out on whether I went a bit over the top, it was good while it lasted lol. Without relying on hindsight too much, if I played the match again I would have looked more carefully at the "must-have" players that were the first names on the teamsheet.

          Loving the Euros anyway.

I empathise. I was more relaxed during the group phase, before there was a realistic chance that I could win the 3D TV. Now that I'm in contention, I feel under pressure to punt because if I need the big scores to stay in contention. I had Hart and Cole on Sunday night, so you can imagine the emotional rollercoaster I was on when that offside header went in and then was chalked off. I'll say one thing; playing this game definitely heightens the enjoyment of watching Euros.

Up until 5 minutes my SF team split was...

    4 Spain, 3 Germans, 3 Italy, 3 Portugal.

So as long as spain go through then no final hit needed. And only 1 if they don't.

I am now thinking of going a little bit more wild and just have 2 ports and 2 Italy and getting better quality, issue is if it's a non German v Spanish final I'm fooked.

    What are others doing?

    Edging bets?

Looking like Germany 5 - Spain 4 - Portugal 2 - Italy 1 right now. Reason being that I think Italy are exhausted and their defenders are dropping like flies to injury, while Germany have had two days' more rest and have more interesting attacking options. Spain v Portugal could be low-scoring snoozefest.

I think the extra rest, coupled with extra-time and penalties works heavily against Italy. It's why I'm likely to only have Pirlo and maybe Cassano as I think Germany will have too much for them. I'm hedging my bets on the other one, no more than 2 or 3 (depending on whether I get Cassano) from either.

          4 Spain, 4 Germany, 3italy, 2port (including oliviera)
My reasoning for this is I think both games will be tight and I'm not sure enough about Germany or Spain to load up. Plus I think there is some decent value to be had in the Italian ranks depending on confirmation of injuries to abate and de Rossi.

If you choose Ronaldo, you want to avoid the Spanish back four (because they're antagonistic. I guess it depends on the view you take as to whether Portugal will score or not.

I think all in Spain & Germany is a risky strategy but is the most likely to reap the most dividends. Italy are no great shakes and Portugal will struggle to score without the ball against Spain. I'd say Spanish defence (3 goals concede in the last 15 internationals?) and a mix of Spanish/German attack FTW!!

I'm not backing any defence that has Ronaldo in this form flying at it.

I think Spain v Portugal will be very close. I'd love to say Portugal will win it,but of course that would be a horrendously bold statement. I reckon Portugal will not have much posesssion, but when they do, and if they get Ronaldo on the ball, anything could happen.

I thin Ronaldo had benefitted from playing against a Duth team that by all accounts was one of the worst teams in the tournament - they gave him so much space in that game he could have scored about 10!! In the Czech game he was again afforded some space but not as much. He will get little time on the ball against the Spanish - I can't see him bringing home the bacon.

The same could be said for Germany against Balotelli (especially with Pirlo there to provide him with chances).

That said, I reckon that defenders from any of the four teams could give you a return as none of these teams are outclassed by their opponents and games close to the final are often cagey so I expect 0-0 or 1-0 are likely scores.

Aye, tight games - I can't see many of them being terribly high scoring unless the Spanish really open their legs. Italy didn't look defensively too sound against England at time that being said although they didn't concede at the end of the day.

Swansea have been great defensively. While things tailed off they have excellent fixtures to start the season and could benefit from the new manager effect. Swansea and Reading rotate 38/38 weeks.

Of course I don't expect a Reading cleanie against Chelsea but it is still a chance for points, even if it is just 1-2 each. Reading could keep a cleanie in their other GW1 fixture.

The article on Reading last week suggested they were very defensive. You could certainly argue that Swansea were an exception to the promoted clubs rule but I think Birmingham also did well enough when they got promoted under McLeish.

I will be doing some research before committing to this.

Nani could worry Spain. Bascially I will have enough FTs to get 11 out with no hit so long as Germany make the final. But having examined things, it is impossible to get even coverage and not have to take a hit for the final regardless of who goes through, thus the plan is to go heavy on the team I think is most likely to get there (Germany) and then use my other FTs to load on players from the other side (or more Germans) for the final.

That's what most seem to be doing, taking a punt on either Spain or Germany and then covering the others.

I did start at 4,3,3,3 split in favour of Spain. But reduce squad to 12 to increase quality.

well mine is 12 if you include Olivera. If Reus was in the earlier semi life would be easier as I'd know whether he was gonna start before I made my transfers. As it is I have 24 or so to decide if it's worth the risk of Reus or whether to go elsewhere.

    Neuer

    Boateng - Alba - Arbeloa - Balzaretti

    Ozil - Khedira - Iniesta - Marchisio

    CR7 - Silva

what do U think about this team for SFs, guys?
Especially, I was trying to use only players guaranteed to start.

Klose reckons he will start (from Guardian):

"I am assuming that I will play. That's what I am preparing for in any case. But we are lucky to have two top strikers. We'll wait and see which one the coach will pick."

Think there's anything in that or just what he's bound to say...?

Here's my team for what it's worth

Think the Spain / Portugal game will be tight but dont see , or punting , cleanies in either game
I see that goes against the grain of most , but that's a good thing

So plenty of ball recovering mids , shoot from anywhere types up front

    Rui

    Alba , Boetang

    Ozil , schweinstiger , busquets , khadeira , pirlo

    Ballotelli , Ronaldo , muller

Have abate to come off bench also

Im pretty confident fab will start, will be able to change my team before if he doesn't. I could get Gomez instead of klose but I think klose will start as

        1. He is more experienced
        2. Italy are defensive and Germany will need movement to break them down, klose provides this more than gomez.
        3. He played well against Greece.
        4. He is normally the starter for Germany but was carrying a slight injury at the start of the tournament and hadn't played for a while.
        5. He plays in the Italian league.

Klose is risky. Silva is a safer option and if Klose fires, you'll lose points from Balzaeretti.

Coming round to the captaining Alba idea. The bookies say there is a 33% chance that Ronaldo will score and a 43% chance Spain will keep a clean sheet. Plus Alba is more likely to pick up rb points and could pop up with a cheeky assist.

Of course Ronaldo could score 2+ (6% chance) or get assists and the odds don't take into account the possibility of extra time.

      Roonow worth stab IMO.

I am struggling to find a quality nailed no forward... Can't with the Spanish or the Gerrys, I don't rate cassano this turnament so what you left with?

      Not much !

Even if Portugal lose, chance CR7 could pinch one and you will have 11m in the bank to burn on cup final day 😉

I'll have CR7 in my team, just not captaining him (possibly). I feel I've been stuck in an FPL mentality this tournament, where you captain a forward, who scores a goal and ends up on 9 after 3bps. Defenders are better in this game. CR7 has scored 3 goals, Alba has just 1 assist but he is 5 points ahead in total score.

Also going for Silva and Biscuits as my Spain For/Mid cover rather than waiting on Fab or Torres. Whoever plays will only get 60 mins anyway and Fabregas isn't really a forward and Torres still looks like he lacks confidence to me.
