Euro 2012 – McDonald’s Scout League Update

As Fantasy managers while away the hours until tomorrow night’s first semi-final of Euro 2012, we’re rolling out some updates on the progress of the Fantasy Football Scout leagues across the various Fantasy games so far. First up, we begin a look at the McDonald’s game, analysing those managers who are currently leading the way after the quarter finals:

Nenad Todorovic sits at the top of the Scout league after registering a score of 71 in the quarter-finals. Jordi Alba, Sami Khedira and Mesut Ozil were his stand out individuals, while he chose to stick with Cristiano Ronaldo as captain after the Portugal man notched against Czech Republic on day one. Nenad now sits second overall in the McDonald’s rankings, just a single point off the summit with a total of 272 points.

Isaac Lundall is next up, just a couple of points behind. His decision to double up on England and Spain defenders paid off, with captain Ashley Cole racking up 14 points in the previous round. The top two have quite a gap over the chasing pack, with Lee Harding sitting in third place on 258 points, 14 off the top. Picking a couple of Portugal’s backline against the Czechs paid off, while Joleon Lescott, Jordi Alba and captain Sami Khedira helped produce a score 69 points in the quarters – Lee is the third Fantasy manager we currently have in the overall top 10, situated in tenth place.

Surapong Lertthiratoj currently resides in fourth place in the Scout league after picking up a 62 point haul last time out. While his decision to back a couple of Italy defenders paid off, his faith in Germany’s backline backfired after Greece scored twice against Joachim Low’s outfit; Mesut Ozil vindicated Surapong’s decision to hand the playmaker the armband by picking up a 16 point captain return.

Winding up our review of the top five, we have Paul Robinson – a new entrant to the Scout league. Paul was the top scoring player of our featured Fantasy managers with a 78 point haul, thanks to his decision to hand Xabi Alonso the armband; the Spain midfielder duly obliged with a 28 point return, while the likes of Jordi Alba, Joao Pereira and Joleon Lescott boosted his tally at the back.

For the contributors, Paul (I’m talking about myself in the third person here, shocking habit) is the top scoring manager so far – sitting just outside the top 50 in the Scout league on 236 points and 604 overall. Doubling up on Spain’s defence and leaving the armband on Ronaldo was enough for 60 points. Mark is next up, sitting in 187 in the Scout league. Taking a leaf out of Spain’s book, his striker-less 5-5-0 formation harvested 64 points, with captain Joleon Lescott and Joe Hart returning 22 points between them in the goalless draw with Italy. Jonty stands in 649th place in the Scout league after a 54 point haul in the quarters. His decision to captain Italy’s Andrea Barzagli against England paid off with a 14 point return, while Jordi Alba also boosted his tally with 10 points at the back.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

I don't know fella. I'm pulling my hair out here.

Changed my team about 20 times in 20 mins.

I wish I knew about reus really fancy having him... I may not be around pre deadlie tomorrow so the Torres/fab choice is key.

I think he'll go fab myself.

Yeah I think Fab will get the nod aswell. Keep the game tight and have the extra security of having another midfielder in there until a striker is needed in the latter stages.

Reus would be ideal if he starts again. Shame we won't have the Germany lineup pre deadline.

The lack of froward options in painful with onto Italian 2 and ronaldo nailed on IMO.

Yeah I think I might end up with Torres even though I don't think he'll start. Italian forwards who lack goals and playing Germany is not worth it. CR7 and only Alba for Spain defence could be a smart move though.

    Thoughts on this team

    Neuer

    Alba, Lahm, Hummels, Pepe

    Ozil, Khedira, Reus, Pirlo, Busquets

    CR7, Nani, Olivera

If it looks likely Reus won't start I'll downgrade Lahm to Boateng and get in Alonso or Febregas.

I think Bayern need to freshen things up especially the way the ended their season losing every match that counted. Having both Robben and Ribery in the same side is a terrible idea. When the chips are down and things aren't going well I wouldn't want those 2 in my team. You can get away with having one but not both. Shaqiri and Mandzukic could add something new and exciting to the team.

PB you seem to have the Löwdown on German football.

In % terms how would you rate the chances to start against Italy for:

      Klose
      Gomez
      Podolski
      Müller
      Reus
      Schürrle

Ah, keeping it to yourself? Fair do's 😉

Personally, I think Podolski is the most nailed on of the lot as I wasn't overly impressed with Schürrle and I think Löw is likely only to take one gamble up front at most...

Löw will judge on training performances that we haven't seen and on gut instinct.

FFS Friendly World Cup Quarter Finals Review

    Quarter-Final 3

    USA defeated Argentina 111-104

In this, the closest of all the quarter-final ties, it was Gagamel who proved the matchwinner. Whilst Goldy and Canadian Football both finished on 48, it was Garg's 63 which proved decisive over Archie's 56. In matchday 1 it was Argentina who took the narrowest of leads with Archie's Perreria outscoring Garg's Patricio by just 1 point. Both teams had 2 Ronaldo's, there was no other major representation in this one. In matchday it was fairly even again as each side boasted Hummels and Boateng combo, whilst Goldy had a Neuer and Hummels combo to add, alongside Schweinsteiger, whilst Archie could only muster Neuer. Matchday 3 however saw the tie swing decisively in USA's favour. Though Argentina boasted double Alba, USA also boasted double Alba, with Garg's having a (c) giving the USA the swing. Though both sides boasted an Iniesta apiece, Goldy's Busquets pick further boosted USA. The final matchday saw a late, but ultimately futile charge from the Argentine Light Brigade. Going all out with 2 Pirlo's Buffon, Lescott and Gerrard, Argentina had hoped to mount a comeback. But alas, with Garg owning all of those bar Buffon (and 1 Pirlo obviously) it was not to be, and it is the USA who move on to face Switzerland in the semi-finals

    Casillas

    Boateng Alba Abate

    Ozil Pirlo Alonso Khedira

    Torres Silva Gomes

Only have the bare 11 with 4m players. When I see the spainish teamsheet tomorrow I'll go Balotelli and
Fabregas if Torres is not starting.

Anything glaring I'm missing out on (other than the fact Abate may be injured!)?

Most people kept 4.0 players from relegated teams, if you didn't do this, you just need to buy some of the cheapest players left. Oliveira, is 4.5, for example.

I think you've got to seriously back Germany's attack against Italy.

First, the Italians have a defensive crisis IMO with Chiellini known injured and Abate and De Rossi struggling with muscle injuries: http://www.football-italia.net/20428/italy-could-have-trio-back

Also while PBJ's report on the German press conference didn't come out with concrete answers (http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2012/06/26/double-gameweek-one-announced/comment-page-1/#comment-3368646), Low did confirm one thing that I always assumed underpinned his teamsheet selection against Greece:

'Löw didn’t rule out changes for Italy because “Greece didn’t have the quality of the other teams” and that match required a special line-up.'
'Löw about the semi-final: “Greece isn’t the standard for this game. Italy is a much different challenge.”'

I see that as enough to believe the Greek lineup was for Greece only and the usual front three will be back and well rested to take on Italy. So I am looking at Gomez again, in place of Ronaldo even.

    Finally,

'Löw said that Germany needed to “push back Italy with their game” and that they’re discussing how to disrupt Pirlo’s passing.'

Germany are conscious that Italy is basically built around one genius (Pirlo) and that if you take him out of the game you may well win it. In contrast to England, he has the personnel and formation to press and harry him using his roaming front three. I think Italy rely very heavily on Pirlo and are otherwise a fairly unremarkable team (being blunt here). Even the obviously inferior England had a brief dangerous opening spell when Pirlo was being kept out of the game. I can see Germany using their quality in a much more dangerous way.

Finally, with Maggio suspended, Chiellini injured and Abate and De Rossi doubtful, the Italians may well not have enough experienced fullbacks/wingbacks to play either of 4-4-2 or 3-5-2.

Good to know, especially as at 4.9 Abate is a pretty irresistible punt.

Sounds pretty touch and go though. In that report I linked posted today, it says “Another 24-48 hours would have been useful, it could be decisive,” began the chief medic in reference to Germany’s extra two days of rest before the semi-final.

De Rossi would be needed in a 3-5-2 as he would be in the back three. I think Italy tend to play 3-5-2 against the best sides.

he could be the defensive version of Olivera, a cheap option who might play and offers funds to use elsewhere. I take your point on board, he could be useful if going with Ronaldo and Gomez.

Yeah I think Germany can play even better, they have the quality to turn attack on and off. Forca what Italy punts are you thinking of? I struggle to see Italian attackers who could score points apart from Pirlo, and there's no guarantee he'll be as influential as he was against England.

seems like i am going only with Balotelli

i dont see valute in Pirlo

another 2 options wich i consider are Marchisio and Abate

that's about all,not much to pick from Italy team

Yep. I had Pirlo in all my teams up to now but am increasingly against it. I agree on punting on Abate. I don't see anything useful points Marchisio can score to be honest (I definitely put him in the same category as Montolivo, Motta, de Rossi etc...). Balo had chances but his finishing was awful, I can't bear trusting him. Cassano?

Balotelli had way more chanses than cassano and if somone will score that would be him i feel

i am willing to gamble at ballo over cassano all the way

                +cassano wont play over 70min

as Germany play a different system it's very possible that Ozil or Khedira could be directed to stay on Pirlo when Italy have the ball. Those 2 guys are both younger and more rested than Pirlo, if they get it right Italy could struggle.

I also agree on their attack, it's why I'm leaning towards going in with Gomez, CR7 and Olivera and maybe go slightly lower in midfield or defence (maybe keep Perreira and get in Alonso or Fab)

Yep one of the features of Germany's tournament has been their dynamic central midfield two of Khedira and Schweini. They are far from static holders, Khedira in particular flies around the field and Schweini comes up when the opposition is camping.

I think those are sensible choices - Gomez and CR7 will give you a more potent attack than most teams out there. Obviously teamsheet dependent but totally getting Fab. That will technically bring you up to 3 strikers.

No way Pool are a small club (sleeping giant is the accepted term I believe) but a club with 2 4th places and a 5th place finish in the last 3 years can not be called small.

Forwards from only Italy and Portugal might not be such a great idea... Germany and Spain are expected to put up a strong defense and also score more goals than them...

I would have at least Silva and CR7 if you are going ahead with only 2 big forwards...

Gomez looks liking becoming a big differential for the semifinals...

Most of the people are transferring him out as he is not a guaranteed striker... So for those who have him, if he starts and scores goals, it will be really great...

Considering Spain's plans of stifling CR7 and cutting off his supply line, Gomez might just be a cheeky punt... Spain do have the quality in defense to keep him out... Arbeloa and Ramos train with CR7 and Pique and Alba have played against him...
