Euro 2012

Euro 2012 – Fantasy League Pro Update

Following on from yesterday’s round-up of our McDonald’s game, it’s time to focus on our dabble with the Fantasy League Euro 2012 Pro game.

With auction leagues created throughout the community, the Scout hosted three divisions, involving myself, Mark and Andy as Chairmen. Here’s a breakdown of how those divisions have panned out.

Scout Division One

In the Scout Division One, Boomslang’s eponymous lineup dominates going into the final four. A 14-point lead over second place Bozovac looks to have sealed him the crown. A combination of Andrea Pirlo and Mario Gomez have done the business for Boomslang, with Iker Cassilas and Joleon Lescott providing returns at the back. Boomslang will go into the semis looking remarkably strong, with 14 of his 15 players still active and one hand on the Division trophy. Bozovac takes just eight active players going forward: he can only hope that the Spanish pair David Silva and Jordi Alba can produce to help him close the yawning chasm. The signing of Marco Reus in last night’s round of bids could also be instrumental.

Gigging Order’s lineup is giving chase in third, with just a three-point gap to bridge. He’ll be looking to 10 active players, with Xabi Alonso, Fernando Torres and Bastian Schweinsteiger surely crucial to his prospects.

Mark’s team sits in fifth, trailing the top three by a huge 22 points. It’s been an unremarkable campaign for him, with the gamble on Wayne Rooney falling short and Xavi and Andres Iniesta massively disappointing, considering their hefty auction fees. There’s still hope though; 12 active players for the final four may yet see Mark climb to a respectable finish.

Scout Division Two

There are a mere eight points separating the top three in this Division as we head into the semi-finals. Tommy J has led the way since early on in the competition and, with 60 points on the board, holds a slender two point advantage over Ginkapo. Tommy’s been blessed with the most efficient attacking squad in the league; so far, his side have racked up eight goals and provided seven assists, while a total of 14 goals conceded is the least number in the league.

Only three of his players picked up the points in the quarter finals, though; Alvaro Arbeloa and Joleon Lescott returned six for a clean sheet apiece, while Joao Moutinho earned four for assisting Cristiano Ronaldo’s winner against Czech Republic. After last night’s 11.30pm auction deadline, Tommy now has 10 players going into the last four, including the suspended Christian Maggio for Italy.

Ginkapo shot up the leaderboard in the quarter finals after picking up a monster 32 point haul. His decision to double up on the Portugal defence worked wonders, as Joao Pereira and Rui Patricio produced 12 points between them in the 1-0 win over the Czechs. Elsewhere, Jordi Alba and Xabi Alonso notched a combined 22 points in Spain’s win over France, grabbing two goals, an assist and a clean sheet between them. Last night’s auction saw Ginkapo mirror Tommy’s player quota – he, too, has 10 players left going into the final stretch.

Mch makes up the top three, sitting with a total of 52 points. He picked up 14 points in the quarter finals, thanks to the contribution of Cristiano Ronaldo, Joe Hart and Jerome Boateng though, after last night’s auction deadline, he has just five players for the upcoming pair of semi-finals, with the likes of Fernando Torres, Andres Iniesta and Bastian Schweinsteiger also in his squad.

Elsewhere in the league, I’m sitting in fourth on 47 points after picking up 16 points in the last eight; I’ve still got 12 players left in my squad, including the injured Helder Postiga for Portugal. Gurka is 10 points adrift in fifth, while SuperDunny and Saram sit in sixth and seventh on 34 and 32 respectively. Shinoda brings up the rear on 18 points and, with three players only remaining, he may well be fearing the wooden spoon.

Scout Division Three

A 15-point gap separates leader, The Giggs Boson, from second place Battersea Babes. The latter was, at one stage, the top team in the entire Pro League game but now sits 547th overall, with the leader of this division lying in 127th place. He’ll go into the semis with eight active players to protect his lead, with Mesut Ozil and Thomas Muller likely to be key to his chances. Battersea Babes will give chase with just five players and looks unlikely to challenge.

Michelen, lying in third and just a point behind, will fancy his chances of closing on both the teams above him with eight players, including Nani, Bastian Schweinstieger and Miroslav Klose, up his sleeve. As for Andy, like Mark he’s suffered an inauspicious campaign: he lies in fifth, with just Mats Hummells, Alvaro Arbeloa and the Italian pair of Mario Balotelli and Di Natale still alive and kicking to see him over the line.

And Finally…

Fantasy League are looking to gather feedback on their pro-auction game with plans afoot to improve matters ahead of the Premier League season. If you’ve played out their Euro 2012 Pro game, feel free to send on your feedback to mark@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk or via your comments here.

However, I think Löw will play Müller on the right and Reus on the left, as he did for about 15 minutes against Greece.

predicted starting lineup as: Neuer; Boateng, Hummels, Badstuber, Lahm; Schweinsteiger, Khedira, Müller, Özil, Reus; Klose.

    Do you agree?

He won't. This lineup looks very likely and for me the biggest doubt is whether Reus will start.

So, Gomez worth transferring out then? 11.7 for a player on the bench is not a good deal..

            Exactly.

Silva and Klose are the strikers to have.

Then I'll probably change Gomez to Klose. The third striker is Ronaldo, should I transfer him out, and upgrade def/mid or keep? Thoughts Milkman?

Well, I'm going with Silva and Klose as my expensive forwards and Oliveira as a cheap option who probably won't play (apart from possibly coming off the bench). This has allowed me an awesome defence and a decent midfield.

Cannot understand people having Gomez, so so expensive, 50/50 to start at best (personally I think its far more likely to be loose) and will probably only play 60-70mins if he does start.

Just my thoughts but I think its madness and a waste of funds.

Giggs B, if Cesc starts he plays in the most attacking position, and has scored twice and looked reasonably dangerous. Silva gets shifted right and apart from Ireland, hasn't looked that big a goal threat, but a decent assist option.

I think Torres has been workman-like but fairly ineffective, partly due to the way Spain play. BUt for the money, ergo value, I'd pick the starter from T or C. I'm mulling both myself, but have pretty much written off Silva.

Hope that helps, although I have a sneaking suspicion that Negredo may start (just to thrown you another curve ball 🙂 ).

He's played well, as always but when he's had chances to score he's been wasteful and Silva has also provided more assists. You can't deny that.

Also if Fabregas starts Silva will probably be the furthest forward for Spain.

It's well reasoned at least, but I certainly don't agree with that assessment of Lawro. Frankly, I found his anti-Twits comment refreshingly honest given much of the dross written on the network. It's also worth bearing in mind that a Twits-backlash was inevitable given how easy it is to 'post your view,' regardless of how well reasoned it may be.

The, I suspect, many millions who also ignore Twits don't have the same medium to support Lawro.

Still, makes cheap white space filler for the nationals, it seems.

An absolutely dire piece of nonsense by a writer willing to criticise pundits but has the gall to attack Lawro for being an effective, ugly mutt. This is (sports?) journalism at its most pointless and disappointing. Sarah Crompton I will read no more.

I'll be blunt, I find Lawro an awful co-commentator or pundit for that matter. The laziest, most complacently smug guy on British telly it seems.

However, I do agree with him that a lot of what happens on twitter is 'sad'. Same on facebook too, and conversation in general though... TV for that matter! The only difference is the medium.

Enjoyed reading that. Sometimes though I like the banter between ex pro and commentator. Depends who it is . Robbie Savage excels at the partnership. His commentary on the New Zealand v Italy game in the last world cup was rivetting, as he got genuinely excited as a fan of football while offering insights into Ryan Nelson's 'dodgy bum injuries.'

While I'm not a fan of talk talk I find Ray Parlour and Sam Mattaface on the station a very good combination, both generous with each and also correct each other.

Alan Green is better with another commentator, because otherwise the entire commentary would jsut be one huge 90 moinute about a dive or a bad ref decision. The solution with Green though is to pension him off though.

I noticed on BBC HD sport coverage of Euro 2012 that the commentary was very low...barely audible...it was quite refreshing. Perhaps a better solution is no commentary at all?

It used to be an option Jonts, or switch to 5Live commentary. But generally enjoy a bit of banter/analysis during a game, but several professional commentators are starting to see themselves as the star turn (Alan Green a prime eg).

Perhaps it needs more than one pundit to create the right atmosphere? Personally, Strachan and Stan 'The Dogger' would be brill.

One of my favourite bits of commentary is when spurs score a last minute goal against arsenal and Talk Sport's Danny Kelly ( a spurs fan ) goes absolutely nuts. I liked that.

I find Robbie Savage genuinely insightful and funny. Alan Green just depresses me, he sucks all the fun out of the game and broadcasting. He's like a big fat Irish dementor from the Harry Potter books.

Ah yeah nothing against his skill to be honest just can't stand him. Alonso might be buoyed by this. I haven't got either right now (have went heavy on German midfield instead) but might consider one or the other.

Alonso: 16 RBs, but just 2 pts.

          Biscuits: 31 RBs, 5 pts

But for ass/goal threat, Alonso by far more dangerous. I'd go Xabi all day long of the pair.

Would appreciate an RMT for my first draft for a semi team:

    Patricio
    Hummels, Boa, Arbeloa, Alba, Pepe
    Özil, Khedira, Fab, Alonso
    CR7, Oliveria, Balotelli

    Bank 0,3

If Torres plays rather than Fab, I take out Balotelli and Fab and insert Pirlo and Torres.

Also considering taking out Khedira and Pepe and inserting Reus and Badstuber. I’d like more Germans for the final, but I think they will concede against Italy.

    Would really appreciate any thoughts.

Pontus, I think that's a fine squad, good SPA/GER cover but no disaster if POR get that surprise win. A bit stuffed if ITA do, but then I'm doing similar 'cause they are very unlikely to.

Good luck, just wait for that final SPA line-up.

Exactly my thought process. You just got to choose one team that will go through. I, as well as the bookies, will go with Germany. This choice also enables me to get Balotelli in. He is due now and the German defence has been shaky.

Do not think I will go for the Reus gamble though. Would really hate it if Pepe scored or someting..

Thanks for the comment and good luck to yourself!

    Italy news:

Giorgio Chiellini and Alessandro Diamanti could be thrown into the Italian starting XI for their Euro 2012 semi-final against Germany.

The first switch could come with the inclusion of Diamanti from the start in place of Antonio Cassano.

Chiellini could be fielded as a left-back in place of Palermo’s Federico Balzaretti as Prandelli may not want to break up the partnership of Andrea Barzagli and Leonardo Bonucci in the middle.

Abate + De Rossi expected to be fit.

the article referred to above thinks that Chiellini will play LB and the current LB will drop out. They will still play 4 at the back.

read that too but Italy coach said that he may have to switch out Montolivo and Cassano both to fit Diamanti in. So there will need to be at least 3 changes then. http://fooyoh.com/sports/2012/06/26/diamanti-may-have-to-wait-for-italy-chance

Someone should do an RB analysis. Always nagging at me, those little 1 points that take an age to accumulate really add up.

How many RB points are enough for you to judge a DM a success?

2pts is enough for me. That's 5pts with a cs which is a decent return for their price.

Hmmm 2 points making 5 with CS is a very decent haul for a 5/6er.

    Question for you:

With 5 points for a goal (from any player), 5 points for a defender's clean sheet and 2 points for a midfielder's clean sheet, which combo do you think will score highest from these 3 options:

    a) Hummels & Cassano (striker)
    b) Barzagli/Pereira & Fabregas (midfielder)
    c) Barzagli/Pereira & Silva (striker)

Reus or Busquets? Reus a better differential but risk of not playing, Busquets will play and good for a few RBs but he's a twat 😛

I can actually see the Italians scoring an early goal from a quick counter, and then defending to the death as they do best.
