Scout Scribbles – Ba Helps Magpies See Off Monaco

Newcastle put the talk of an Andy Carroll return to one side by chalking up their first win of the pre-season courtesy of a 1-0 win over AS Monaco. Jonny Evans looks unlikely to make the start of the season for United, though Nemanja Vidic and Chris Smalling seem certain to be ready, while Roberto Martinez’s faith in the talent up north sees Wigan acquire yet another prospect from the Scottish Premier League, as the Latics snap up 19-year-old Fraser Fyvie from Aberdeen:

Monaco 0 Newcastle 1
Alan Pardew’s side bounced back from their 1-0 friendly defeat by Chemnitzer last week to see off French outfit Monaco. The Newcastle boss is still without those players who participated in the recent Euro 2012 tournament but still rolled out a strong looking side in a 4-4-2 formation. Davide Santon started at right-back, with Ryan Taylor his second half replacement, while Jonas Gutierrez began the game at left-back.

Summer signings Romain Amalfitano and Gael Bigirimana were handed starts in midfield; the former was afforded his fair share of set-piece duties and almost helped his side take the lead within a minute, with Shola Ameobi hitting the woodwork following a corner from the new boy. Demba Ba partnered Ameobi up top and grabbed the game’s only goal just after the half-hour mark, highlighting his efficiency when played as part of a front pairing; Ba was ineffectual when shifted out to the flank in the latter part of last season following the purchase of Papiss Cisse but served a reminder of his potency in a more central position.

The Magpies boss made a trio of alterations at half time, allowing Santon to move to the left and Gutierrez to shift forward into a more natural midfield role. Ryan Taylor’s introduction saw him handed corner kick duties and he almost made an instant impact, teeing Ba up to nod just wide. Pardew’s side missed further chances to put the game beyond doubt, with Gabriel Obertan particularly culpable late on but the Magpies held on for a comfortable win.

Newcastle Starting XI: Harper; Santon (R Taylor 56), Simpson, Williamson (Perch 46), Gutierrez; Amalfitano (Obertan 63), Abeid (Vuckic 46), Bigirimana (Tiote 63), Sammy Ameobi (Tavernier 46); Shola Ameobi ( Gosling 63), Ba (Marveaux 79)

In Other News…

Jonny Evans could miss the start of the season for Man United, Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed. The defender was a strong cut-price favourite last season following Nemanja Vidic’s cruciate ligament injury in December but he is still recovering from an ankle operation and may miss out on the opening day trip to Goodison Park, according to his manager. Ferguson had some good news on the injury front, though, and expects Vidic – along with Chris Smalling – to be raring to go for the start of the upcoming campaign:

Jonny has had an operation. I am not sure he will start the season but he won’t be far away. Chris Smalling has done a bit of training. The ruptured groin muscle he had certainly needed a lot of attention. He is gradually progressing and I expect him to start the season. Vidic will start the season, I am sure of that.

Roberto Martinez has made his first signing of the summer transfer window by snapping up Scottish youngster Fraser Fyvie. The Wigan boss already has a couple of first-team regulars from north of the border in the shape of James McCarthy and James McArthur and returned once again to sign the highly-rated youngster from Aberdeen. The afore-mentioned pair were integral in the Latics’ storming run of form at the end of the previous season and were fielded in the double-pivot in Martinez’s change to 3-4-2-1 and according to the manager, Fyvie could well provide strong competition for places in the upcoming campaign:

Technically he’s very gifted, enjoys playing in the midfield where he can cover large areas, he’s very powerful off the ball and in possession is someone who can read the tempo of the game very well.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Good luck to him at Madrid, hopefully people will finally understand how good a player he is now.

A lot of the criticism directed at him is absolutely ridiculous - he plays exactly like Xavi does, and Xavi is never criticised for a lack of goals or because he is too "weak".

The game will be launched when testing is complete and the guys at fpl towers are confident it will run smoothly..they won't want a repeat of last year..the launch could be in an hour, it could be next week..doubt the fpl guys even know..but I imagine they want it released as much as we do but can't take any risks..

I agree. He is past it now. Was always too short to be a great keeper but his shot stopping made up for it. But now that he is getting older his reactions and reflexes aren't the same. I would steer clear. Villa will be more attacking so I would avoid defenders. N'Zogbia/Bent maybe Holman for me.

Lindegaard can't kick a ball to save his life which is what Fergie hates. De Gea was growing in confidence and will be a lot better with Vidic back, plus he may actually be the cheapest nailed on option in United's defence, so I'll definitely be looking at him.

Not 'til the fat Levy sings. In truth, Spike, it was always going to be a big ask for him to stay again after last summer's shenanighans. Full credit to Moddy, he didn't sulk, had another very good season and Spurs will get a very good price for him.

As AVB has already admitted, it was by-and-large inevitable, so he'll have plans to replace Moddy, who will fit very snugly into Real's midfield (or any for that matter). It would be encouraging to read confirmation of the Ade deal.

Did a bit of fixture analysis. Who do you guys think has the best and worst early season draws?

I think ManC have a decent first 10 weeks with only Arsenal and Liverpool as tough games.
Newly promoted Southampton have a dreadful first month, playing ManC, ManU and Arsenal!

ManC should do well from the off. Bit of a selection conundrum up front possibly with Tevez staying on for a while. Right now I feel like taking a bit of a punt on a newbie, maybe Reading. Their fixtures don't look too bad, and the Davids seem to do quite well against the Goliaths during the early part of the season. Don't know much about Reading though, gonna try keep an eye on pre-season results.

The risk is, that he has a poor (relative) season and will be a year older, so maybe the financials would be less attractive. Also, given his injury record over his career, this too adds risk.

I suspect it's merely a case of are the clubs he wants to go to, interested.

Also, keeping his age in mind, think he'll know he's at his peak - this is it. If he wants to move, it's NOW.

        Yeah that looks about right.

Part of me wonders if he has VDV starting on the bench in mind a lot of the time given his inability to play 90 mins.

The frustrating thing is if Siggy started every week he could be an absolute sensation.

There is a possibility now that with a proper fitness coach and training schedule at Spurs that Van der Vaart could become able to play 90 mins.

I can see against weaker teams at home Sigurdsson could be pushed back to CM and one of the DMs dropped. Or if no other RW is signed then Van der Vaart could play RW with Siggy CAM.

im looking at nolan but a many here are going for noble(set pieces). tomkins is another decent option if u want defensive cover

cole is their main man up front, but we already have so many better strikers in the league so there is no need to consider him

I think Noble will be more consistent with 5-7 point returns but Nolan will have the odd double figure score and sometimes be captaincy material. Definitely going for Kevin personally, he's pretty much the only nailed on pick for me so far.

M&L, RBs are recovered balls, a stat used in the Euros game for winning tackles headers etc. It worked quite well in that instance, made tough-tackling, less creative players better points prospects. In FPL, think getting 1 pt for every 5 tackles for say, Tiote. You can imagine the scope for 2, 3, even 4 extra points in a game.

        I liked it, others didn't.

I think there are new website features being added. Not changes to the game as such, but additional widgets for use on the website. They're obviously still testing these for performance, browser compatibility etc. Certainly, following last season's experience, they will be trying to launch without any issue so I'm not overly surprised that they're being cautious. We just have to carry on being patient.

probably 9-10 games per "quarter" and scores zeroed out at the end of each quarter. that way, people can join the game 10-20 games into the season, and still have a chance at winning something. I'd say this won't affect the overall prize though, as that will go to the manager with the most accumulated points over the 38 GWs.

Can't see FPL adding Recovered Balls to the game. That would be a big shock to the vast majority of players who didn't play the UCL or Euro games. I also think it's inconsistent with their push for objective stats (BPs given out by a computer, changing the assist rule to "last player who touched it") as what constitutes a Recovered Ball is a human judgment call.

I think their announcement "[snip]..along with news of a brand new in-game feature." could be taken either way.

    1) A website feature which provides new information or at least a way of organising/displaying existing information
    2) An actual new feature to the game rules.

I think 1) is more likely as Mark says, but if 2) I wonder if they'll introduce
    a) Recovered ball points (from UCL game)
    b) Captaincy swap within a gameweek

Personally I'd prefer a) over b), as I think b) puts off the more 'casual' players. If it *IS* a new game feature, what would you all like to see?

It's a shame they're wasting time on (in all likelihood) unnecessary add ons when the majority would be happy with the more basic layout of a season ago, they don;t need to reinvent the wheel it's fantasy football. Well that's assuming it's imminent, even then, for those that enjoy playing their mates who arent 'serious players' a 1 month/matter of weeks window isn't as long as you;d think- last season I know several who just didn't get round to it- and some that left it late and the site crashed!! Not all are in a position to devote the time they'd probably like for various reasons that some on here clearly are, irrelevant of start

People have an answer/excuse for everything on here but I don;t see the issue in giving us an opening date at least- not a time just a date, instead of dangling this and that through twitter.

I'll say again, they're not reinventing the wheel, this cloak and dagger silence, down time, and OTT features seems very unnecessary for a game that at it's core is fairly straightforward

I agree that it seems like a fair bit of fuss for a simple game, but I think the game has been developing since previous years and hence to expect it to be released on the same dates as previous years is overoptimistic - luckily they normally launch ~5 weeks before season start, so it's not absolutely urgent they launch right now anyway. Heck, we might like the new site and find the small wait more than worthwhile.

Working on the assumption that the "brand new in-game feature" is a website tool not a rule change, what do you think it is?

My take: I think it is very likely to be a match event analysis tool so you can see where each touch/pass/shot/etc was made. The reasons being that one of FPL's weaknesses is their lack of stats, they're probably going to have access to the OPTA data, and I believe they already report such data on the main Premier League site but NOT in FPL. Will all be a bit bizarre if they end up copying FFS on this score!

Agree with stat side - similar to Metro but using the EA versions?

Yeah, you might imagine working closely with EA that the stats might be based on the kind of stuff they include in FIFA. This kind of tool seems like the most likely addition to me.

I believe we will see the stats table restored as it was in 2010/11. This will be just the stats from the game e.g.: goals, assists, bonus etc. This is likely one area that they're testing right now.

The FPL do not use Opta data - they use PA data and will do so for at least the forthcoming season. The FPL uses the same data as the Premier League site - e.g.: PA data. They are the official data partner.

That would be great. Really missed that last year, the stats table.

Ah thanks for clearing that up - yep so those stats I saw were PA data. Is that what BBC use as well? If I recall correctly the types of stats reported seemed to overlap a bit between the BBC and PL.

Only played seriously from last year so have never seen the stats table. Sounds like a sensible though small change.

Still, can they really describe that as a "brand new in-game feature"?

I doubt that's the feature they're referring too. And yes, PA also feed the BBC with data I believe.
