FPL Player List Analysis – The Midfielders

Having analysed the Keepers and Defenders, the second part of our breakdown of the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) player list turns to the midfielders. With David Silva the only player in this position to be valued in double figures, there’s perhaps a little more scope for budget in this area, depending on how many Fantasy managers plan to utilise their allocated cash:

Looking at the 4.5 options here, there is little to no appeal – the likely starters in this price bracket are defensive midfielders in the main, who will seldom offer more than a two-point return. At 5.0, though, Mark Noble comes into our thinking, with spot-kick duties and a fair share of set-pieces for West Ham, while Shaun Maloney could prosper for Wigan if he can remain injury free and maintain his role behind a lone forward in the Latics’ 3-4-2-1 formation. West Brom new boy Yaccine El Ghanassy is similarly priced and can operate up front, though we’ll hedge our bets until we see what Baggies boss Steve Clarke has in mind.

Moving onto the 5.5 bracket, Jean Beausejour is a stand-out; he averaged 4 points per game (ppg) since joining Wigan last January. Nathan Dyer returned 122 points last term and offers strong value in the Swansea midfield, while many will be hoping Stephen Ireland or Marc Albrighton can prosper under new Villa boss Paul Lambert. Reading captain Jobi McAnuff returned five goals and 11 assists last season and could be one to watch if the Royals can produce the goods.

It’s when we reach the 6.0 mark that matters become far more appealing. Kevin Nolan and Adam Lallana offer options from the promoted clubs – the latter has a fair share of corners for Southampton and produced 11 goals and 10 assists in the previous campaign. Adel Taarabt and Wes Hoolahan both finished the 2011/12 season strongly after disappointing starts – their respective form towards the tail end of last term suggests they could be potential bargains here, though Anthony Pilkington could contest Hoolahan for our Norwich affections. Baggies pair James Morrison and Chris Brunt will be on the radar, while new signings such as Brett Holman and Jonathan De Guzman could prosper following moves to Villa and Swansea respectively.

The mid-price bracket continues to offer us plenty to consider. Analysing the 6.5 options, Steven Pienaar could be exceptional value if he completes his move back to Everton – the South African was a superb Fantasy force in the second half of last term at Goodison, though Leon Osman offers potential at the same price for the Toffees. Charles N’Zogbia is another stand-out here; the former Wigan man could well prosper under the attack-minded Paul Lambert at Villa, after last season’s disastrous spell with Alex McLeish in charge. James McClean managed 4.4 points per game in 2011/12 and looks better value than Sunderland team mate Seb Larsson, while Stoke pair Jonathan Walters and Matt Etherington arrive on the back of solid returns in the previous campaign, with the former continuing as an out-of-position prospect.

Victor Moses now comes in at 7.0 after the Wigan winger accrued 140 points last season, though of all the players in this price bracket, Scott Sinclair was the top scoring player in 2011/12 – with spot-kicks in his locker, the Swansea man still looks appealing. Chelsea duo Ramires and Marko Marin will also set you back 7.0; if the latter can establish himself as a regular under Roberto Di Matteo, he could prove to be an absolute steal. Further up the price list, Hatem Ben Arfa’s cost of 7.5 should still prove strong value if he maintains the level of display on the right of a front three in the final few months of last term, though Stephane Sessegnon (8.0) may struggle to pick up suitors, given McClean’s relatively cheap price tag at Sunderland.

Theo Walcott finally proved himself as a bona fide Fantasy option in the season gone by after returning 169 points – the Gunners winger has been slapped with a 9.0 price tag, though many will be hoping the rumours of a move transpire, with Alex Oxlade Chamberlain and Gervinho both available for 7.5. Yaya Toure (8.0) and Samir Nasri (8.5) offer alternative routes into the City midfield for those who are reluctant to splash the cash on 10.0 David Silva.

Picking the right option from Spurs and United has never looked so essential. There’s a four-way tie for our affections at Old Trafford; Ashley Young and Shinji Kagawa will set you back 8.5, with Antonio Valencia and Nani only slightly more expensive at 9.0 apiece. Over at the Lane, new boy Gylfi Sigurdsson mirrors Rafael Van der Vaart’s 9.0 price tag after the former averaged 5.7 ppg at Swansea last term, while Gareth Bale comes in at 9.5, after accruing 195 points in the previous campaign.

There are similar dilemmas to ponder over at the Bridge, with very little between Frank Lampard (9.0), Eden Hazard and Juan Mata (both 9.5). With Mata likely to miss the start the season due to a combination of Euro 2012 and Olympic participation, Hazard could start the campaign the strongest of the trio, though Lampard’s spot-kick duties could offset his deeper role in the Blues 4-2-3-1. Finally, Clint Dempsey’s valuation of 9.5 still looks acceptable, bearing in mind he racked up 209 points last season – only Robin Van Persie, Wayne Rooney and Sergio Aguero managed more.

With plenty of strong options in the upper price range, then, the budget bracket may be more crucial than ever this term as we look to look for cheap, value options in order to spread our cash evenly across the classifications. The likes of Silva, Bale, Mata and Dempsey are likely to receive substantial investment after their 2011/12 exploits but with so many others offering similar potential at a similar cost, there’s the chance (or hope) our midfields won’t quite be so identikit this time round.

Discussing this on previous thread. He was having hardly any shots per match last year and has never scored well. I don't see why he will suddenly start scoring now. Depends if he is pushed up into the hole if Clinton the big red dog leaves.

They may well do eventually, but I suspect people will not invest from the off to wait and see how Norwish look under Hughton.

Surely he won't rotate as much as Lambert (does anybody??!!)

Gervinho would be the main beneficiary if Walcott were to leave IMO. Gerv got into loads of decent positions last season, but then seemed to forget what he should do at the key time - he wasn't like this at Lille, and if he kicks on this season he could be good value at 7.5m.

Won't Podolski's arrival limit Gervinho's game time though?

I'm thinking that after his decent showing at the Euros, Wenger might give Chamberlain a bit of a run of games.

And as far as Diaby goes, I'm a huge fan.

I think Gerv can play either side. IMO he's not an option at the moment, but if Walcott were to leave, then maybe.

If Diaby could stay fit and was guaranteed a game, then he would also be a shout, but I reckon with everybody fit, Diaby wouldn't be in the first choice team.

Might have a look at planning a team for the first 3 weeks only. I always blow my WC load early anyway might as well plan to.
Spurs, United, Chelsea, City, QPR and Norwich look good for those weeks - may have to pick safe picks from those 3, hope I get a decent enough score while the line-ups settle and transfers are finished off.

I think Park and Taarabt are both good value at 6. Which would you choose?

I've got Park at the moment, when he started for UTD he always did well, he knows where the goal is and because he's at a smaller club I think he'll play a more important role.

Definitely Taarabt. He's been in form for the latter stages of last season, is in form during the pre-season, signed a new contract, looks finally happy at QPR and has great understanding with his attack, does freekicks and corners, crosses. Expect him to make a lot of assists this season.

Park's form is unknown. But it's difficult to say whether Taarabt will be a sure starter for Hughes when he's got Park, Cisse, Andy Johnson, Zamora, Hoilett. I mean, it's a question what role will Taarabt play - a winger, a number 10, a false 10, a striker, or just a free-role?... With so many choices and possible roles, there's a temptation to rotate Taarabt.

Sorry Paul (Sir P) I disagree on Larsson and McClean. McLean is a great option for sure, but Larsson has set-pieces and maybe penos in his locker that may give him the edge IMO.

    From WhoScored blog article:

"Michael Laudrup looks set to complete the signing of 26-year old Spanish attacking midfielder Michu from Rayo Vallecano after he impressed to end La Liga season with 15 goals - the most of any midfielder in the league. While his finishing was certainly impressive, with a 16.9% conversion rate from 2.4 shots per game, stats elsewhere suggest that he may not fit the framework left by Brendan Rodgers, with the new man at the helm potentially looking for a more direct approach.

Although Michu played in behind the striker for Vallecano for much of the season, playmaker he is not, averaging just 1.1 key passes per game and picking up just 3 assists. His pass accuracy of 68.5% was actually very poor, and not down to any great attempt to display a range of passing, averaging just 0.7 long balls and 0.1 crosses per game."

Anybody thinking about ignoring the DGW and Chelsea's MF and going for a Spurs MF? Spurs have a great run of home fixtures from GW2-5 and with Hazard new to the PL, Mata away and Lamps playing deeper than in previous years/being rotated, it doesn't seem worthwhile IMO.

Ok think I'm getting to the point of nearly there!

Begovic Sorenson (9.0m) (cheaper than Huth/Shawcross, no rotation worries)

    (7.0m-Verm/Vertonghen?) Fabio Hooiveld Tomkins Fonte

    Valencia Siggy Hazard Noble Park

    Rooney Aguero 4.5m fodder

Set up in a 3-5-2, bench striker third sub, playing defenders for main two subs. Stoke reasonably stoic at home and away, and keepers good value only 9.0m tied up. Big defender with two rotating from Fabio/Hooiveld/Tomkins, maybe double up Hooiveld and Fonte when Saints at home to lower team.

Only thing to consider if Pienaar gets move to Everton will have instead of Park, so big defender will be 6.5m, maybe Vertonghen, Rio, Cole, plenty of choice, unless have another 4.0m def and bin a 4.5m.

    Thoughts?

Attackers generally outscore Mids, who outscore defs etc...so filling 1 attacker slot with an empty suit is a bad move. That said, you could get Pog for an extra 0.5m and I think he'll get goals this season

don't like nor understand the complete reliance on stoke between the sticks. other teams are stronger and for just a bit extra u can rotate between two strong defences, or stronger. which, given stoke's early fix, oughta yield more points. 4.5 forward seems a bad move. generally forwards are the highest scoring players and we only get 3 of em. you wanna limit yoself to 2 and just waste a valuable space

They are cheap that's why, value compared to Huth/Shawcross too, and combined total of 130+ points last year. I'm confident they will be the highest scoring 4.5m defenders.

If I play 3-5-2 with my good midsI don't need a 3rd striker. But Poggy for another 0.5m as an option is an idea I had in mind actually. Depends on main defender pick and the Pienaar situation really.

it's a good score but i still think u'd get more by rotating two equally strong options. plus if stoke implode u have only one keeper to replace and not two. rotating keepers is such a popular tactic because it works. i've always stuck with it and it served me well. however this season DDG seems too good to pass up

also, don't understand why u'd want park. taraabt for the same outlay is morre dynamic, more direct and with more ability. plus takes some set pieces. penalties for all i know. your defence will find cleanies hard to come by maybe free up some dough by downgrading val. seeing as u have rooney. i'd be lookin at graham and maloney for possible value scorers

Park's a good player, and will do well with Cisse to aim at. Prob not much between them, but Taarabt seems a bit flakey to me. But Pienaar probably better if at Everton...

So maybe 5.0m Poggy on the bench, Pienaar in my midfield five, and a 6.0m defender, Cole maybe, or Rio. See how things pan out...

Would a team with a bargain based midfield interest anyone. eg

Sinclair, McClean, Nzogbia Tarabat ( 4.5 sub)

It allows expensive strikers, defenders and keeper....provided all your bench is cheap as chips.

Would they supplement your HUGE hitters enough to be a viable option?

Have thought about Verm/Kompany/Vidic/Vertong at the back and Noble/Nolan/Park/Pienaar mid but it just doesn't look right to me...

Plus the big defenders only got 145ish points, whereas obviously your mids and forwards were in the 200's...

Your best defender was Hart at 7.0m no rotation, no goals, and still outscored the superstars like Baines etc so I think balance is the key.
