The Burning Question: Can Gylfi Sigurdsson Replicate his Form at Spurs?

Our next Burning Question article focuses on one of last season’s surprise packages, the Icelandic midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson. The former Reading man was snapped up on loan from Hoffenheim by Swansea during the January transfer window and promptly made a mockery of his 5.0 price tag in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, scoring seven goals and assisting three more while playing in “the hole” behind Danny Graham. His formidable displays took Fantasy managers and Swansea’s opponents by surprise and by the end of the season the Icelandic international was hot property.

New Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers, who had also managed Sigurdsson during his stint at Reading, was chief amongst the midfielder’s suitors and keen to re-unite with the playmaker once again this summer but it was Tottenham who ultimately secured him on a permanent deal in the region of £6.5m. With such attacking talents, even a FPL price hike to 9.0 and a 7.3 tag in the Sky Sports game may still represent a bargain. Already during pre-season friendlies he has scored two goals, but questions remain as to how manager Andre Villas-Boas will fit Sigurdsson and fellow attacking midfielder Rafael Van Der Vaart into the same side. During Spurs 1-1 draw with LA Galaxy and in last night’s 2-0 loss to Valencia, Sigurdsson played worryingly deep while Van Der Vaart was on the pitch, but has been utilised in an attacking role whenever the Dutch midfielder isn’t on the pitch.

Mark says…
The early signs are good. So far in pre-season it appears that Andre Villas-Boas has looked to harness Sigurdsson’s talents – I can’t help but notice that he’s immediately jumped the pecking order on set-plays. There is concern about the role that Sigurdsson will play once Luka Modric has flown the nest – something which looks inevitable. He could find himself as part of a midfield three with Rafael Van der Vaart and Gareth Bale flanking a lone striker, or worse still, deeper in a 4-2-3-1. It remains to be seen if that system will allow Sigurdsson to exert his considerable influence around the opposition’s penalty area. We’d like to think so but, with both Van der Vaart and Bale similarly priced, I wonder if Sigurdsson is the riskier option of the three right now. Certainly I’m leaning towards Bale – he seems more certain to kick-on from last season, whereas Sigurdsson set high standards at Swansea and was a key figure in a side that seemed to be bereft of direct goal threats.

Paul says…
It all depends on his game time. If Sigurdsson becomes an integral member of the Spurs first-team under Andre-Villas Boas, I see no reason as to why he can’t replicate last season’s form. When the summer transfer window closes, we’re likely to get a better idea of Villas-Boas’ intentions – he has maintained a 4-2-3-1 in pre-season with Sigurdsson mainly utilised in “the hole” but the manager has admitted that is mainly down to current personnel. A preferred 4-3-3 formation, with Sigurdsson tucked in behind a lone frontman, would replicate the Icelandic international’s role under Brendan Rodgers at Swansea and Reading and surely boost his appeal. Quite how Villas-Boas will use Rafael Van der Vaart should be key; if the Dutchman is vying for the same role as Sigurdsson, both players’ minutes could be reduced and promote Gareth Bale as the main midfield option in the Tottenham midfield for Fantasy managers. Spurs scored 66 goals last season – 22 more than Swansea – and if Sigurdsson becomes nailed-on, his creativity will be key next term. With the likes of Jan Vertonghen and Kyle Walker ideal for Villas-Boas’ high defensive line, the potential is there for the Portuguese manager to quickly draw a line under his brief spell at Chelsea last time round.

Anorak says…
Whether through the change in manager at Spurs, or the enforced absence of Rafael van der Vaart due to injury, there is certainly a new verve to the attacking midfield slot of Andre Vilas-Boas’ Tottenham side during the pre-season friendlies. Sigurdsson appears to have slotted seamlessly into a Spurs pre-season midfield without the aforementioned Dutchman and Modric, and has made himself at home picking up both an assist and a goal in the final game of that US tour (a 2-1 win over New York Red Bulls). That said, the future of both Modric and Van der Vaart is sure to have a key part to play in the potential success of Sigurdsson at Spurs – should they both start the season at White Hart Lane, then midfield spaces will be at a premium, even in the 4-2-3-1 formation likely to be adopted – one of Sigurdsson and Van der Vaart would need to be pushed wide right and, in order to maintain balance (and some semblance of width) could easily find themselves benched.

Andy says…
As the unofficial president of the Gylfi Sigurdsson fan club, this is perhaps the one question that has caused me sleepless nights in pre-season. My short answer is an unequivocal, yes. The Icelander has all the talent to succeed at this level but now that he is surrounded by the likes of Gareth Bale and Rafael Van Der Vaart – and with Emmanuel Adebayor still in the shopping list – I am a little worried he could end up sharing the spoils a little too much. I think he has more than enough ability but I’m definitely fearful of how his new team-mates will impact upon his scoring. There’s just as much a part of me that thinks having a stronger squad around him will only better his cause.

Not feeling the Torres love. After the opening double, fixtures are not great and Chelsea were not free-scoring even after RDM took over. And, of course, he is no longer the prolific poacher he was at Liverpool.

        24% with Shawcross

Yaya, Cabaye, Allen and Hazard top 4 midfield picks. I admit to considering Yaya but only as short term.

Aguero 35%, Rooney 26.6% and Ba 24.4%. I don't have AgueRooney and can understand why people have them (they will be in my team at some point) but as a starting point my team seems quite differentialtastic, and I'm liking the balance of it. No holes.

Ok. I have to admit now, I was being sarcastic. We can't see your team because FPL hasn't started yet. And even if it had, it would only show the team for the last gw, not what you have currently transferred in or out.

N'Zogbia is on my watchlist, but I would wait and see how Villa shape up under Lambert. I agree about Bent. Better striker options available atm, but same could be said about N'Zogbia i.e. McClean/Pienaar

For the record, here is the post.

I feel like I’m putting all my eggs in few baskets.

      DDG / Fed

      A. Cole / Zabaleta / Cuellar / Demel / Clyne

      Lampard / Bale / Pienaar / N'Zogbia / Noble

      Tevez / Aguero / Graham

1.5 banked, will probably bring in Rooney for Tevez after downgrading Cole.

I was just looking back now.

I do like it, it is very close to an earlier draft I had. If not for DGW I would almost certainly be doubling up with Taguero.

Currently I have a stronger midfield (Nasri + Kagawa over N'Zog + Pienaar) with Torres + Tevez + Petric. I think the upshot of your setup is covering Aguero is he goes mental against Saints, which is a worrying possibility for me.

The Charity Shield and the Arsenal match have been quite helpful in finalising my team. I keep thinking it's a little light in defense and am banking on Adebayor being a Spurs player.

Your criticism would be really helpful

Vorm (or Szczesny - not quite decided), Cerny

Koscielny, S Taylor, Fabio, Hughes, Clyne

    Gervinho, Silva, Bale, Kagawa, Kacaniklic

He had no heavy hitters up front. I think Bent, Suarez and Holt. He missed a lot of major hauls and yet he achieved a fantastic rank thanks to cash in all areas. Food for thought.

I had Carroll Bent and Zamora, it also fell flat on its face but came back fighting with a wildcard of Rooney Dzeko Adebayor.

Big is the way to go!

Using the comparison tool on the last 4 matches for Zabaleta against other 1st choice City defenders as well as some notable attacking RB/LBs from other teams is interesting. Zabs is getting very far forward and having a lot of attempts it seems.

Of course, Kolarov's attacking stats are much better despite one of his last 4 matches being a late sub appearance.

Zab is probably the best big hitter imo, but I havent got any in my team. Completely seperate entities.

A bit of a longer comment...

Why I've picked the way I have (subject to change, obv)

Players outside brackets are fixture proof and will play week in week out, those in the brackets are rotated

FWIW I think if you can't say a paragraph about each of your picks like this then maybe they shouldn't be in your team.

Any thoughts on selection/room for improvements/bits where I'm flat out incorrect welcome.

    **GOALKEEPERS**
    Friedel (Elliot)

Friedel (5.5) Bargain at 5.5. I dislike the idea of rotating goalkeepers (to rotate two goalkeepers they are necessarily cheap). Predicting clean sheets from a bottom-half team can be a crap shoot. The CS come along rarely and to score the same as a keeper from one of the better teams you pretty much need to get it perfect. I don't like that game, the CS comes along when you don't expect it and nightmare. I accept that some people play rotating keepers and it is a valid strategy, it just isn't for me. If you do decide to go with one keeper, then why Friedel? Well, I don't think Hart offers the value at 7.0 (plus he takes up a City spot if I ever want to do something like Toure/Aguero/Tevez), DDG is a very real rotation possibility, and Reina has a bad start (though I'll consider him later, Vorm did me very well under Rodgers last year and for a time I think Liverpool had a good CS streak even with KK).

Elliot (4.0) When I was drafting my team he was the 4.0 goalkeeper with the lowest ownership so hopefully there's no chance he's going to lose value (compared to someone like Cerny (4.0) who some people may think is a starter and sub out when they realise he isn't). Not that it matters much anyway with bench fodder, but who knows where I'll need the money come wildcard time.

    **DEFENDERS**
Baines - Koscielny (Gorkss - McCartney - Clyne)

Baines (7.0) Expensive, but looks to be the best value defender in the game at a full 1.0 less than last year. He has a crazy high value already with a projected 2.5 goals and 5.9 assists for the season but I think that with a new look Pienaar/Jelavic/Naismith Everton that he'll outscore those predictions and finish with

Koscielny (5.5) I want a way in to Arsenal. With Cazorla (swapped Villareal for Malaga last year - Villareal went from 4th to 18th, Malaga from 11th to 4th) I think Arsenal become a much better team and that they'll get more goals and cleansheets as a result. In fact I like all of their signings this summer, I just don't know where the midfielders and attackers will fit in yet. Koscielny, at least, seems to be nailed on - and unlike Vermaelen (7.0) he allows me to double up with Baines.

Gorkss (4.0) / McCartney (4.0) / Clyne (4.0) I may as well talk about these together as only one will play each week. Each seems to be a promising player on their respective teams and has a decent chance of starting. Maybe one won't see the pitch, maybe another will catch on fire and rise in value. All risky picks, but they allow me to afford the rest of my team and will take up one spot per game. Also, doing things this way means I leave the absolute minimum possible value on my bench each week - in a game that's all about Pts per £ that's all important.

    **MIDFIELDERS**
    Bale - Mata (N'Zogbia - Taarabt - Maloney)

Bale (9.5) Seems like he's the kay attacking man under AVB. Bale already scored very well last year under Harry Redknapp, with a string of disappointing games with no points where he was told to do what he wants. I think that Bale works better with a strict tactical system to follow, and this system specifically favours him attacking - he's the first name on my team sheet.

Mata (9.5) For the double gameweek. Mata is mostly acting as a placeholder for other 9.5s (Dempsey, I'm looking at you) and I fully intend to transfer him out before GW3 as I won't leave 9.5 on my bench. I'm not convinced by Chelsea this year, but if they do start well Mata is likely to be my first choice from their squad. He's projected to score the highest points and has PL experience. Not as flashy a pick as Hazard, but not as risky either. And Lampard? Maybe 2 years ago, but no longer.

N'Zogbia (6.5) I already have Baines, and McClean/Sunderland haven't looked threatening since Sessegnon's injury. Regardless, I'm a believer in buying in to managers that you trust. And while Lambert isn't going to keep many clean sheets or necessarily win many games I *do* trust that he'll bring me goals and N'Zogbia looks to be a key part of that. Admittedly, not as key a part as Bent, but he's 2.0 less and doesn't take up one of my precious forward spots. This is the biggest vote of confidence that Lambert=Goals I can give with Villa's dodgy history.

Taarabt (6.0) All indications are that he can come good this year. Of course the same could have been said last year, and we know how that turned out. But QPR are here again, and they've improved again, and Taarabt looks to be a key part of that team. I'm not TOTALLY sold on Taarabt, but hey - there's got to be risks somewhere. Also, he seems the best 6.0 and under player out there (I won't touch Noble, he's a bad player in a bad team, set piece duty be damned)

Maloney (5.0) Another example of where I have faith in the manager/tactics. Much about Wigan was covered in the 'Burning Question' article that doesn't need to be repeated, but needless to say I think they can carry on just as they left on, and an OOP midfielder playing as part of the front 3 is a ridiculous bargain. Not to get carried away with myself, this is still Wigan, and I'll be rotating Maloney accordingly.

    **FORWARDS**
    Rooney - Aguero (Graham)

Rooney (12.0) Most expensive player in my team, second most expensive player in the game. Disclaimer; I'm a Manchester United fan. United score a lot of goals, but they also have a lot of players - and therein lies the problem. I think Kagawa, Valencia, Nani, Welbeck, and Hernandez will all do very well this season, but I can't pay their prices knowing that any of them could miss any given game. Rooney... is different, things get rotated around him and if there is a goal he's the most likely to be involved. I think Rooney will be the top scoring player in FPL this year.

Aguero (11.5) I need a viable captain option for when Rooney is away from home. And you know which team rotates perfectly with Manchester United **ALL SEASON LONG**? Yeah, City. Tevez, as bargain-tastic as he is at 9.0 (and I do think he's good value for that price) isn't someone I can give the armband to and then rest easy. Maybe he'll be dropped in favour of Balotelli/Dzeko this game, maybe he'll disappear on the pitch, maybe he'll score half a dozen. There's a lot of risk in Tevez that isn't there with Aguero. But basically, Aguero is predicted to be the second highest scorer in FPL this year, and he rotates perfectly as a captain with my other big-hitter. This is the biggest stroke of luck the PL fixtures have ever given us.

Graham (6.0) Swansea's fixtures are impossible to ignore for the first few weeks. For attacking returns Sinclair is a full 1.0 more and Michu is a risk I don't need to take at this stage of the season.

Like I say, he takes up a City spot. And I don't know where I'd find the extra money from.

It's definitely something I'm considering but I'm really quite confident in Reina/Liverpool/Rodgers defensively after that bad first run of fixtures and I'm not sure Hart will bring in enough extra CS to be worth it above him (I was burned a few times by City last year scoring so many goals that conceding 1 was no big deal - and then it happened).

Uh oh, my Baines bit cut off. If you've been hanging around this site you've heard me say it before - but I think he's going to outscore 2.5g/5.9a and become the best value player in the game.

      Nothing too crazy, then.

Hi lads, first post on here just looking for some opinions on my team. This will be for the first 3 weeks and then I'll re-asses everything after the international break when there's some sort of definitive information on starting line ups, form players etc.

3-4-3 formation most weeks. Federici in for GW1 before being subbed for Friedel.

    Friedel (Federici)

    A.Cole / Vidic / Zabaleta (Demel / Nelson)

Kagawa / Mata / Pienaar / McClean (Kacaniklic - will see some decent playing time for Fulham)

    Torres / Tevez / Graham

I have 2m in the bank to swap Rooney in for Torres after GW1.

    Transfers planned:

    After GW1 - None
After GW2 - Mata to one of the Spurs trio (Bale, VdV or Sigurdsson depending on how they are lining up). Another free transfer depending on form (Demel has a home game against Fulham when Chelsea are off so no need to transfer Cole).

I usually play my wildcard after the international break and have decent success in doing so in the past, and by then we'll know things such as:

    - Which one of the cheap CB's Villas-Boas has as first choice for Spurs, meaning I could get De Gea in goal and swap Vidic for said Spurs CB saving a bit of cash to spend elsewhere

    - How Richards injury is doing as that will affect Zabaleta's playing time

    - If Tevez is getting rotated a lot with Balotelli and/or Dzeko

    - Who the value defender/midfielder/striker actually is (there's always at least one, often more, that emerges)

    - Starting line ups, formations etc for the vast majority of teams

Any thoughts, comments or opinions (no matter how critical) would be gratefully appreciated. Cheers 🙂

        Cheers mate.

I'm actually a Sunderland fan and think he'll do well this season. He'll play 90 minutes every week when fit and in a counter attacking team with his pace has the potential to do well. If we sign another winger as expected and said winger replaces Larsson in the team then McClean will also take his fair share of corners (although he's pretty crap at them :P)

I'll wait to see how we go over the first 3 weeks and consider changing to another 6.0-6.5m midfielder (Hoillet, Michu, Taarabt etc) if he's not doing too well.
