Scout Report – Pablo Hernandez

Michael Laudrup’s restructuring of the Swansea first-team squad continued last week with the capture of Pablo Hernandez from Valencia. The 27-year-old joins on a three-year-contract for a club record fee of £5.5m and reunites with Laudrup, having previously played under the Dane at Getafe.

With Scott Sinclair leaving for Man City, Laudrup has bolstered the Swans’ options on the flanks with yet another canny piece of business. Speaking to the club’s official website upon completion of the move, the new Swansea boss was clearly delighted with his new acquisition:

He has played a lot of games in the Champions League games in the last three seasons and made his debut in the national team. I am looking forward to working with him again; he is a good player with the right mentality. He specifically wanted to come here. The other players who have come here have come from smaller clubs, and here is a player from the third biggest club in Spain and he wants to come here. It is great for us.

The Statistics

A product of the Valencia youth academy, Hernandez played a single game in the 2005-06 campaign before being loaned out to second division Cadiz for the following season. Producing four goals from 22 appearances, he caught the eye of Laudrup and was snapped up for Getafe in 2007. A single season for the Dane saw Hernandez feature 28 times in La Liga, returning three goals and three assists, before Valencia splashed the cash to bring him back to the Mestalla on a six-year contract.

Starring alongside the likes of David Silva and Juan Mata, Hernandez proved to be a pivotal figure upon his return. Over four full seasons, the winger’s creativity was as crucial as his eye for goal – a total of 111 league appearances saw him find the net on 16 occasions, with 19 assists also accrued. Hernandez has also featured for his country four times, finding the net once.

The Prospects

Laudrup has been rightly lauded for his impact on Swansea’s style of play so far. Keeping with Brendan Rodgers’ 4-3-3 formation, his decision to tweak the roles of the wide men has had an instant impact, with Nathan Dyer and Wayne Routledge both profiting hugely. The pair have produced attacking returns in every one of their three matches under the new man in charge, with three goals and five assists between them.

Hernandez’s arrival, however, places major question marks over the Swansea flanks. As a club record signing, the chances of him swapping La Liga for a place on the Liberty bench seem non-existent, meaning one of the two wide boys will almost certainly make way. Able to play on either wing, he looks favourite to oust Routledge on the left, allowing Dyer to continue his menacing form on the opposite side of the pitch. Indeed, the acquisition of Ki Sung-Yeung also affords Laudrup further options – Jonathan De Guzman has been fielded in a central role but is versatile enough to be moved to the flank, should Laudrup choose to partner the combative Korean with Leon Britton in the centre of the park.

While Michu’s superb start to the season has seen his Fantasy Premier League (FPL) price spiral up to 7.3, with 32% of Fantasy managers now snapping up his services, Hernandez could offer us a tempting route into a midfield that seems full of attacking returns right now. Priced at 6.5 in FPL and the Sky Sports game, the former Valencia man looks an intriguing differential if, as expected, he is immediately installed into the first XI. The only real downside is that price tag – both Dyer and Routledge are cheaper across the Fantasy games and are likely to be maintained by their current owners until Hernandez begins to prosper.

Looking at the upcoming schedule, there is plenty evidence to suggest the new boy could offer an instant impact. With three home games (EVE, RDG, WIG) and a trip to struggling Villa in the next five Gameweeks, Laudrup’s side continue to attract significant investment after racking up eight goals in their first three fixtures. Hernandez, though, has sneaked in almost unnoticed – currently, just 597 FPL managers have snapped up the Spaniard’s services. While we’re not expecting a Michu-like beginning to his Premier league career, Hernandez has the class and ability to prosper as a key figure in Laudrup’s new-look side and, as Dyer and Routledge have already illustrated, there looks to be plenty of Fantasy potential on offer out wide for the Welsh club this season.

Obviously love to have them both but not sure that can happen. Ivan was pretty good last year, scored a fair number of goals and he looks Iike continuing that form. Baines has been prolific but was a bit off last year.

I know Ivan can be a good attacking fb from time to time but you also need to consider that he'll be played at the centre form time to time which will cut down his attacking returns. Plus Baines is 1st choice setpiece taker for Everton, period. Sure Ivan can outsore Baines over a few weeks (last 2 weeks a prime example) but even you know that it was a bit of a overload and will never really happen again during the season.

      Baines.

Ivans run of goals seems to be more a case of a lucky run than the attacking consistency we know Baines has shown over the seasons. Also Ivan may face competition from Apiz (or whatever his name is). Also you can drop Baines to Ivan/Vidic/Verm easily. Which is nice.

Has to be between Hazard or Tevez. Id lean on Haz as Stoke is pretty tough to breakdown at home.

I personally wouldn't get a Tottenham player, but it's not a bad idea. If they explode 80% of the people on this site will kick themselves.

Davies would be pretty nice if he was nailed on, but I've heard rumours of Swansea going after Grosso. Just not sure Laudrup is willing to use him fulltime.

I think it's good, thinking of doing the Graham to Lambert switch myself so given Graham the ultimatum! (one more week) Just think that either keep Baines or Pienaar( a bit too Everton coverage otherwise)

    Thoughts on this WC team?

    Jussi - Begovic
    Baines - Ridgewell - Rangel - Hughes - Cuellar
    Hazard - Cazorla - Michu - Morrison - Maloney
    RVP - Tevez - Fletcher

I was also wondering if there's an obvious way to get Sagna in this team by around week 6-7? Don't want to drop Rangel over those GW7-8 fixtures.

Johnson stats from the weekend game against Swansea were appalling. I put it down to a first EPL game for the club. I went for him with my WC last gameweek but if he doesn't produce in the next few GW's, I will lose faith.

Also, he withdrew from the England team with a 'minor' injury. Something to monitor.

Jags has been off to lively start, but looked best against sorry Villa squad. He might be recent cheaper replacement during this period when fixtures are favorable, but over longer haul will probably not tally as much. This has been very uncharacteristic of him. I expect as Naismith settles into midfield there won't be as much room available for Jags to be playing forward.

Im worried that i have a west brom and west ham keeper as well as one each in the back line, maybe thats not such a good idea? I would've thought Ben Davies was more or less nailed on due to him playing the 90 in league cup, coming on for taylor when he got injured and laudrup mentioning him.

Funny how Dembele did not increase today. I guess there is something related to the transfer from Fulham here. Protection perhaps?

Yeah I was expecting him to go up too. He was only just over the NTI target though - so it might just have been a 'margins of error' type thing.

Id go with pienaar because pablo isnt guaranteed to start the gw with the form of dyer and routledge and has baines as a link up on the left. I had the same dilemma earlier. Although Pablo could be a revelation like Michu who knows?:)

I think people should be a little wary about Cazorla at the moment, he does look amazing and creates so many chances but there's also competition in midfield at Arsenal. It's not like Walcott/Gervinho/Ox/Diaby/Arteta/Rosicky/Wilshire are not going to be getting assists and goals. He might not be as big a hitter as people think, Arsenal have a lot of options attacking-wise. Anyone care to debate this?

Cazorla could be an unbelievable points scorer over the coming weeks but Arsenal have still only scored 2 goals in 3 games and had 2 blanks. At 9m he better produce fast or there'll be some serious FPL hangovers.

But if you watched him in the games, everything ran through him, some of his passes were sublime and there was lots of evidence that he could score big with assists and the odd goal, can't see anyone displacing him from the team anytime soon anyway.

I didn't mean to suggest someone might displace him, he's a definite starter that's for sure. I'm just a little unsure about his value right now in FPL. He has one game of big points and now everyone wants him, but will he be consistent?

I think he's still going to be central, despite all of the names you put up there, because several don't really play in the middle of the field where he operates. Also, amused that you put Rosicky on the list... really? Anyway, valid point and there will definitely be competition, but I think it is going to be Cazorla plus a rotating cast of others, rather than Cazorla being one of that rotating cast.

That said, I agree that there will be very little patience at that price tag (that's what I'm hoping for, to be honest). Just see what happened to Kagawa after one mediocre match. He's some kind of leper now, if you listen to the ADD crowd.

haha, I just put Rosicky because I saw his name on their midfield list, he's still one to pitch in with a few assists though! My post did sound like I meant he might get rotated, apologies, I don't think he will at all, I just mean that Arsenal's midfield is quite creative over all and will he be getting such a monopoly of points to justify his 9m price tag? We'll have to wait and see.

I'm also hoping there is very little patience too, as that will mean he won't go too high. I still rate him highly and would love to get him in my team soon.

Oh and so true about Kagawa, everybody is so quick to abandon ship. He's going to be crucial to Man Utd's attack, it'll just take a few games for him to settle.

Because of his price it's reasonably easy to swap him out for the majority of other promising mids. I don't think it's that much of a gamble.

Cazorla will rip it up for my FPL team, or fire blanks for the Gooners.

      Win-win situation.

I think he'll get better as arsenal get better. I Think Arsenal are coming to terms with life without RVP and are starting to settle Cazorla will have far higher ownership by christmas ...Hes on my watch list for now though.

I have had him since the begining.....he is so central to the arsenal attack.

"Arsenal have still only scored 2 goals in 3 games" - Yet Cazorla was involved in both. In GW1 he set up Giroud in a position where even I would have scored.

If you compare Caz's stats vs Hazard......Hazard had 2 assists where he was taken down in the box (both calls were marginal). He also took 1 peno only becasue Lampard was not on the pitch.
Take those stats away and he is 24-19 pts in favor of Hazard. Further....look at the comparison stats in the members area.....CARZOLA DOMINATES HAZARD!

      That said i have both......

Yes, I was very surprised at how much better Cazorla's stats are than Hazzard's. Food for thought....

Interesting, unfortunately I'm not a member but I'll take your word for it. I do think Hazard has been a bit lucky to get all those points, as in he hasn't exactly got them in the most stylish of ways, 3 penalties, 2 fouls on him and 1 he takes. Very lucky really. Can definitely see how Cazorla has impressed more in terms of overall play.

Sometimes I'm jealous of Andy Carrol, but then I remember the next time I get hurt no one will be there to take this picture of me and post it on the internet.
