Scout Report – Pablo Hernandez

Michael Laudrup’s restructuring of the Swansea first-team squad continued last week with the capture of Pablo Hernandez from Valencia. The 27-year-old joins on a three-year-contract for a club record fee of £5.5m and reunites with Laudrup, having previously played under the Dane at Getafe.

With Scott Sinclair leaving for Man City, Laudrup has bolstered the Swans’ options on the flanks with yet another canny piece of business. Speaking to the club’s official website upon completion of the move, the new Swansea boss was clearly delighted with his new acquisition:

He has played a lot of games in the Champions League games in the last three seasons and made his debut in the national team. I am looking forward to working with him again; he is a good player with the right mentality. He specifically wanted to come here. The other players who have come here have come from smaller clubs, and here is a player from the third biggest club in Spain and he wants to come here. It is great for us.

The Statistics

A product of the Valencia youth academy, Hernandez played a single game in the 2005-06 campaign before being loaned out to second division Cadiz for the following season. Producing four goals from 22 appearances, he caught the eye of Laudrup and was snapped up for Getafe in 2007. A single season for the Dane saw Hernandez feature 28 times in La Liga, returning three goals and three assists, before Valencia splashed the cash to bring him back to the Mestalla on a six-year contract.

Starring alongside the likes of David Silva and Juan Mata, Hernandez proved to be a pivotal figure upon his return. Over four full seasons, the winger’s creativity was as crucial as his eye for goal – a total of 111 league appearances saw him find the net on 16 occasions, with 19 assists also accrued. Hernandez has also featured for his country four times, finding the net once.

The Prospects

Laudrup has been rightly lauded for his impact on Swansea’s style of play so far. Keeping with Brendan Rodgers’ 4-3-3 formation, his decision to tweak the roles of the wide men has had an instant impact, with Nathan Dyer and Wayne Routledge both profiting hugely. The pair have produced attacking returns in every one of their three matches under the new man in charge, with three goals and five assists between them.

Hernandez’s arrival, however, places major question marks over the Swansea flanks. As a club record signing, the chances of him swapping La Liga for a place on the Liberty bench seem non-existent, meaning one of the two wide boys will almost certainly make way. Able to play on either wing, he looks favourite to oust Routledge on the left, allowing Dyer to continue his menacing form on the opposite side of the pitch. Indeed, the acquisition of Ki Sung-Yeung also affords Laudrup further options – Jonathan De Guzman has been fielded in a central role but is versatile enough to be moved to the flank, should Laudrup choose to partner the combative Korean with Leon Britton in the centre of the park.

While Michu’s superb start to the season has seen his Fantasy Premier League (FPL) price spiral up to 7.3, with 32% of Fantasy managers now snapping up his services, Hernandez could offer us a tempting route into a midfield that seems full of attacking returns right now. Priced at 6.5 in FPL and the Sky Sports game, the former Valencia man looks an intriguing differential if, as expected, he is immediately installed into the first XI. The only real downside is that price tag – both Dyer and Routledge are cheaper across the Fantasy games and are likely to be maintained by their current owners until Hernandez begins to prosper.

Looking at the upcoming schedule, there is plenty evidence to suggest the new boy could offer an instant impact. With three home games (EVE, RDG, WIG) and a trip to struggling Villa in the next five Gameweeks, Laudrup’s side continue to attract significant investment after racking up eight goals in their first three fixtures. Hernandez, though, has sneaked in almost unnoticed – currently, just 597 FPL managers have snapped up the Spaniard’s services. While we’re not expecting a Michu-like beginning to his Premier league career, Hernandez has the class and ability to prosper as a key figure in Laudrup’s new-look side and, as Dyer and Routledge have already illustrated, there looks to be plenty of Fantasy potential on offer out wide for the Welsh club this season.

The thing is that i think there are far better VFM options for the 3rd striker spot (Pog/Graham/Berba/Fletcher) than there are in midfield. As such I'd rather take Hazard for CHE cover and use that 3rd striker spot on some one else.

City/United/Liverpool midfields are currently looking barren of good FF choices. Leaving Manchester cover to RVP/Tevez. Which leaves us with 2 (or so) heavy hitter spots in mid. And for my money Caz and Haz look best suited to fill those slots, certainly until Tot (read: Bale) start producing.

Another way of looking at it:

Assuming everyone goes with RVP, Tevez, Hazard, Michu... You can afford two more big hitters, maybe 3 if you sacrifice the overall quality balance of the team.

Those two additional big hitters could be crucial as they're somewhat differentials. For me at the mo it's Yaya & Cazorla, but Torres, Lampard, Cisse, Jelavic, Bale, Dempsey, Silva, Aguero, Podolski, Giroud, Kagawa, etc are all possible alternatives with the potential to prove indispensable.

Ja i like that way of thinking of it.

          For me it's Caz/Baines atm.

Your point though does even further highlight the importance of the budget options like Fletcher/Graham/Maloney/Guthrie/Pog though as these can prove extremely valuable too.

      It's basically Nolan/Barfa.

I'd say Nolan. Because he will be less likely to score without Carroll, and West Ham are poorer away atm than Newcastle. Also with Ba/Cisse not scoring as much Barfa may need to score.

But it could go either way really. Your choice. Don't blame me if Nolan gets a hat-trick. 😛

I'm not sure what exactly Jol has planned for Berba. I think that if Jol build the team around Berba (like he spoke of) then I'd say sell petric really. But I'm always weary of benching a forward over a midfielder.

So probably still Nolan. But I'd rather bench Petric than Barfa i think.

There seems to be a lot of love for Ridgewell out there at the moment but, tbh, he's not a player I know much about. I've studied his stats and he's attacking but not at the Baines/Boyce level. West Brom are likely to be sound defensively under Clarke but, other than this, why is he a good choice when compared to other 5m options (e.g. Saylor)?

Form is I think the key motivation for West Brom over Newcastle. Newcastle are looking far less dominating so far this season and therefore more likely to concede maybe.

ShawX looks a decent option if you back stoke, but Begovic comes in much cheaper at 4.5.

Hangeland is nice for his attacking threat, but Hughes is there for 4.5, and Fulham aren't great away from home. So it's better to have a 4.5er benched imo.

As for Wigan, tbh i don't fancy them for nearly as many clean sheets as West Brom, they are prone to too many defensive mistake really. It's loss of concentration that often costs them.

Swansea look more vulnerable at the back this season (IMO), simply because Chico is reckless and a poor marker, Taylor is out and a very inexperienced LB will come in and Laudrup seems more attacking. Leading to possibly less possession and fewer clean sheets. I do think that Swansea are definitely the best competition for 5.0 spot in defense though.

Those are the points on the teams i could think of, any 5.0 options i missed?

PS: I actually prefer Foster for WBA cover. It allows my other 5.0 spot to go to New/Swa.

Can't really answer this for another few years - if Yaya continues at this rate he could pip Scholes. Best in the world in that position right now imo.

Easily Scholes considering whole career and him at his peak.

Although If i had to put together a team today to compete in the PL i would probably pick Yaya, because he has more stamina.

I don't think so - seemed like the game plan to pack the midfield and then chuck him on with 30 mins to go to try and snatch something.

I think he starts 95% of matches this season.

I don't know much either to be honest. But he scored and assisted nearly all their goals last season, and he looks a beast. He's pencilled in for me in GW5, so I'm putting my money where my mouth is 🙂

RE: Dufflinks, regarding your post on the last page.

Having a cheaper mid would allow for the Baines-type player for sure, I'm actually leaning towards going with Vermaelen personally. I see Arsenal getting a lot of CS's if they continue the way they're playing and Verm is going to get some goals no doubt. I think it's mainly because I have Pienaar at the moment that I'm not so keen on doubling up on Everton...

For some reason I'm not too enthusiastic about Begovic, I've never been a huge fan of Stoke either way. I can see them getting cleansheets for sure and being defensively solid but I don't fancy it too much at the moment. I think I can see Stoke struggling a bit this year maybe that's why.

Getting Baines/Verm is sort of sacrificing 1m or so on your midfield so it can end up looking a bit light. Do you think you'll play Maloney most weeks? Or will you rotate with a 4 man midfield? or just with Guthrie for Home/favourable matches?

That was meant to say, are you gonna rotate between playing 3-4-3 and 4-3-3 most gameweeks? i.e have an extra defender some weeks or are you going to just rotate Guthrie and Maloney and play 3-4-3 all the time?

      Cheers,

Vermaelen won me my mini league last season so I'm a big fan - but I think I read he has a less attacking role in this Arsenal team vs last year. More CS potential but, imo, if you pay above 4.5m for a defender this season they have to have some attacking potential.

For my WC team, I'm going all out for attack and trying to reduce spend anywhere without attacking potential. I look at it this way; an assist from a defender is basically a CS (when you factor in the bp potential), a goal is a clean sheet and a half. A defender that score 3 goals a season will yield you about 24 points (incl probably bps) - That's the equivalent of 6 CSs, before you even factor in their defensive points!

As for my midfield - If I can consider Boyce/Ridgewell as half a midfielder, I'm happy playing Guthrie or Maloney each week. That said I am leaning towards Morrison and a cheaper defender...

      Hmmm that's interesting,

the amount of overlapping of teams is amazing for Foster/Jaask, whether that's a good or bad thing though...is up for debate. You're basically banking on all these inferior teams drawing blanks regularly!

Foster/Bego has the long Home run which looks very appealing too.

So I decided to save the transfer this week, as I'm fairly happy with my starting 11. Painful to see the likes of Hazard go up in price so rapidly, but I think waiting until after the internationals and having the extra flexibility of an extra week to view new signings could prove more beneficial than gaining an extra 0.3m of team value. Agree with my stance given this squad?

    De Gea, (Federici)
    Zabaleta, Cuellar, Hughes, (McCartney), (Clyne)
    Bale, Kagawa, Michu, Pienaar, (Guthrie)
    RVP(c), Tevez, Podolski

Yeah, to be fair to Giroud & Podolksi though, there aren't many players in the world who could do what Henry could. Of the 3 you mention, I think Henry is the best - consistently awesome and won games on his own time and time again. He surpassed Wrighty as my all time favourite player.

I just see them as another type of players/scorers, nothing wrong with it.. just not as spectacular as Henry...
Right now, I would be happy just to see them score.. So far, Podski looks like the better scorer, links up great with Cazorla and Gibbs on the left... Giroud is a great box player tho 🙂

Yeah, watching that clip reminded me of the days we used to hammer teams - haven't done that in a long time. Cazorla looks a class act - once we get Walcott back in the side I can see both Theo and Podolski getting their fair share of goals. Giroud still has some impressing to do for me - he's missed a few sitters already so he needs a goal, and soon.

Hey guys, already did Bale->Hazard for GW4 (when he was 9.9).

Is it worth doing Zabaleta->Baines for a hit?

Wouldn't be starting Zab otherwise. Current defensive lineup for GW4 is: DDG Cuellar Hangeland Gorkks
