The Watchlist – Leighton Baines

It somehow seems strange writing up a Leighton Baines Scout Report at this time of the season. Typically, we have to wait till the second half of the campaign before Everton embark on one of those resurgent runs so synonymous with the club under David Moyes but this time round, the Toffees have been quick out the blocks:

Baines, as always, has been one of the chief protagonists. With a clean sheet, assist and five Fantasy Premier League bonus points across his first three Gameweeks, the left-back’s form reflects his side’s surprise start, with Moyes’ men registering wins against United and Villa before a temporary blip at West Brom last Saturday. According to club captain Phil Neville, the Toffees’ fine form is down to a change in pre-season build-up by Moyes – whatever the reason may be, it brings Baines onto our radars ahead of a kind upcoming run of games for the Merseysiders.

Looking at the season ticker, Everton have, arguably, the strongest run of fixtures over the next couple of months, right the way through to Gameweek 13. Investment in the Toffees’ assets looks a definite tactic to consider, then, with (NEW, SOT, LIV, SUN, NOR) all rolling up to Goodison, while trips to the likes of Wigan, QPR and Reading all offer the potential of points.

Pricing also falls in Baines’ favour this time round. The left-back had a relatively average season by his own high standards last term, producing four goals and a couple of assists – bearing in mind he returned five goals and 11 assists in the 2010/11 campaign, it’s fair to say his attacking output took a significant dive. As a result, his starting price dropped from 8.0 last season to 7.0 in FPL, while in the Sky Sports game, his cost of 7.1 looks good value.

Already, we’ve seen Baines’ creativity supply chance after chance for his team mates – indeed, no other player in the Premier League currently matches him for goalscoring opportunities provided. With a share of corner kicks, in addition to being first in line for free-kicks and penalties, he offers far more than just clean sheet potential – with the likes of City and United failing to produce returns at the back, any highly priced defender who offers the potential of attacking returns looks all the more appealing in the current climate. If Nikica Jelavic or Marouane Fellaini can apply the finishing touches to Baines’ consistent left flank delivery, a bandwagon seems almost inevitable.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

People seem to be overreacting to Arsenal's 3 CSs so far in thinking that Arsenal's defense is solid this season. Having to playing Stoke(a), Sunderland(h) and Liverpool(a) hardly strikes fear that your defense is going to be under immense pressure.
Liverpool scored 1 or less goals in 14 of their 18 home games last season, while Stoke were the lowest scorers in the Premier League with Sunderland just 5 places better in the scoring stakes.
They may well prove to be solid defensively but I think I'll wait until another couple of games, especially Man City(a) to see them face a proper test.

they will still be better than last season. They have a new defensive assistant coach too if I am not mistaken, so there are some changes made, also Song is out who reportedly lacked defensive dissipline which I personally dont understand though.

good point , but if you jus got 3/3 you'd take it,
I've seen Wagons take off with just an assist only to falter,
Arsenal will concede but the concensus is that under Bold they will continue to keep a decent percentage of the clean type.

Yeah I think it's undisputable that we're overachieving relative to our season average right now. But I also think it's virtually certain we will get more CS than last year and that alone makes us a prospect worth considering for CS because virtually every other big team's defence has collapsed

Arsenal still got 13 clean sheets last year I believe. That's decent enough. I don't think they'll absolutely eclipse that. You think they'll get up to 20? For any team that's amazing

and from the same source, a goalkeeper scoring with a huge punt:

an interesting point to note is that the opposing keeper (who let the goal in) ends up in the back of his net and actually dies of shame.

Transfers might be slow right now but will pick up massively on Friday night. My stab at price risers and fallers this week:

      +
Hazard, Tevez, RVP, Michu, McAuley, Cazorla, Ivanovic, Routledge, Dyer, Mertesacker, Gibbs, Vermaelen

      -
      Bale, Naylor, Rooney, Szczesny…

Demel and Reid saw some good kneejerking after the games but I think the problem is that they've got lots of transfers to go, both only around 10% right know, and they're defenders so may not be top priority. Always a possibility, depends on how mental the transfers get. Just extrapolating here.

          Yaya's in the same boat

Yaya has the strongest chace of rising again before deadline. He's on the front page of transfers and will be picked up by casuals on Fri too.

Reid too is strong and is on the top page. This deadline may be to soon for a 4.5 def though.

Roysh... so here's my current WC team. Am pretty happy with it. Any thoughts or issues with it? I'm aware that Gallas is a strange pick with Spurs performing so poorly in the first 3 but I reckon he could be a steal if AVB gets his act together

      Foster, Begovic

      Cuellar, Gallas, Jenkinson, Baines, Demel

      Cazorla, Michu, Hazard, Morrison, Sterling

      Tevez, RVP, Berbatov

AVB getting his act together is a big IF imo. They are already looking painfully similar to AVB's Chelsea side of last season and I can't see their form changing any time soon. Spurs are a no go zone for me at the moment....overpriced and underperforming.

As for the rest I would pick Guthrie ahead of Sterling and Fletcher over Berb if it were my team. Otherwise looks solid.

Downgrade Ramos and Alves and shore up your midfield.

Lots of solid budget options in the 4.5-5.0 range.

        And why Jenkinson?

Isacki, if you're right with your prediction about Szczesny dropping that will mean he'll be 5.4m, cheaper than Gibbs. If you've not done your Wildcard yet he could be worth getting for Arsenal defensive coverage. Might be a bit expensive for a keeper but if it means you can save .1m on getting Gibbs or Sagna then it might be worth it. Also a lot of people would have sold him and have no way of getting him post-wildcard.

Thanks Martin but unfortunately I had premature wildcardation already. The thing is, we are not entirely sure if Szczesny is just going to walk in and take the jersey from Mannone you know. It's a bit of a DDG/Lindegaard situation IMO.

Ye true, there's that too. But I think if Szczesny gets the place back he won't lose it to rotation the way DDG/Linde works. We'll have to see what happens. It's a pity there are no 4.0m keepers, if Szczesny gets his place back I would have considered just having him and a 4.0m. These FPL guys are clever, they know what chancers we are!

I`m at a bit of a loss to understand how Swansea`s new left back signing - Dwight Tiendalli - can be registered to be able to play for them before January.

      The rules state;

" For the 2012/13 season each club had a deadline of 4th September to submit a squad containing no more than 17 players who do not fulfil the "Home Grown Player" (HGP) criteria.

The remainder of the squad, up to a total of 25 players, must be Home Grown. An HGP means a player who, irrespective of his nationality or age, has been registered with any club affiliated to the Football Association or the Football Association of Wales for a period, continuous or not, of three entire seasons or 36 months prior to his 21st birthday (or the end of the season during which he turns 21).

Changes to the squad list of 25 may be made during the period of a transfer window.

U21 players are eligible over and above the limit of 25 players/squad.
For the 2012/13 campaign Under 21 players will have been born on or after 1st January 1991"

September 4th has long passed, so how do Swansea think they will be able to register Dwight Tiendalli to play before January?

It says you register a squad "up to a total of 25", very weird, I have actually emailed the Premier League for clarification. It seems quite clear that "Changes to the squad list of 25 may be made during the period of a transfer window". Watch this space!

CHANGES of players in a squad list can only take place during a transfer window but ADDITIONS can be made at any time so long your squad size is below 25 (which Swansea's was). In practice this means only free agents can sign because if you signed a player from another club they would have to be taken off their club's list outside the transfer window, which is not allowed

I'd take that in a heartbeat. My goal is top 25k by the end. Got 50k last season (first) and I can't say I was too disappointed.

Well nobody (including myself) ever plays for anything less than 1, but as I don't have any money invested and I want to enjoy myself, I'd rather set the bar lower and be ok, than get top 1k and take it far too seriously. If money was at stake, it would be another matter 🙂

Chances of N'Zogbia starting against Swansea?
I am a bit worried as he will drop to 6.2 before gw4 deadline so if he isn't expected to start then I would rather have Pienaar..

Yup. I think people tend to forget how good a player he was as well. There was a period in the early 2000s when there were few if any better left sided players anywhere in the world

STAKED defence. Not a fan of doubling up on Jussi and Demel myself. Actually considering going with Davis and Ruddy just to avoid the double up problem and i want to keep Demel if possible.

Ramirez is a big gamble but then i guess you already knew that!

I think Hazard and Michu will have to be relied on too much to get points from your MF. It's an either/or situation with Baines and Vermaelen

I don't think FPL are quick to flag a player just because of a news report. There's no official news on the healing time of most injuries that have happened so far. It's a bit of a drag but I think it won't be clear whether he'll play or not for another few days or so.
