Watchlist

The Watchlist – Leighton Baines

It somehow seems strange writing up a Leighton Baines Scout Report at this time of the season. Typically, we have to wait till the second half of the campaign before Everton embark on one of those resurgent runs so synonymous with the club under David Moyes but this time round, the Toffees have been quick out the blocks:

Baines, as always, has been one of the chief protagonists. With a clean sheet, assist and five Fantasy Premier League bonus points across his first three Gameweeks, the left-back’s form reflects his side’s surprise start, with Moyes’ men registering wins against United and Villa before a temporary blip at West Brom last Saturday. According to club captain Phil Neville, the Toffees’ fine form is down to a change in pre-season build-up by Moyes – whatever the reason may be, it brings Baines onto our radars ahead of a kind upcoming run of games for the Merseysiders.

Looking at the season ticker, Everton have, arguably, the strongest run of fixtures over the next couple of months, right the way through to Gameweek 13. Investment in the Toffees’ assets looks a definite tactic to consider, then, with (NEW, SOT, LIV, SUN, NOR) all rolling up to Goodison, while trips to the likes of Wigan, QPR and Reading all offer the potential of points.

Pricing also falls in Baines’ favour this time round. The left-back had a relatively average season by his own high standards last term, producing four goals and a couple of assists – bearing in mind he returned five goals and 11 assists in the 2010/11 campaign, it’s fair to say his attacking output took a significant dive. As a result, his starting price dropped from 8.0 last season to 7.0 in FPL, while in the Sky Sports game, his cost of 7.1 looks good value.

Already, we’ve seen Baines’ creativity supply chance after chance for his team mates – indeed, no other player in the Premier League currently matches him for goalscoring opportunities provided. With a share of corner kicks, in addition to being first in line for free-kicks and penalties, he offers far more than just clean sheet potential – with the likes of City and United failing to produce returns at the back, any highly priced defender who offers the potential of attacking returns looks all the more appealing in the current climate. If Nikica Jelavic or Marouane Fellaini can apply the finishing touches to Baines’ consistent left flank delivery, a bandwagon seems almost inevitable.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

How nailed on is Gibbs? Is Santos a threat or is he still stuck on the bench?

Surely a threat but the pre season games I saw he was horrible and out of shape, also has some trouble with the law. I cant see the harmony of the current backline being disturbed by too much either

Santos will get time. I'm hoping it's mainly in the CL, but it's prob the main reason I'm still holding Jenkinson.

Yes, that's where I sit currently. I think Jenks is good for the next 2/3, but Gibbs has more chance of rotation with Santos, wheras Jenks is a 4.5 + bench / upgrade later sort of deal.

Think that's a little unfair. While another big hitter would be nice, Pienaar has killer fixtures, and McClean's aren't bad. They will produce points in the next 4-5 weeks.

looked at fixures seems like Everton and WBA have the best run

so i will double up at Jelavic+Baines and get Morrison as 6M midfilder

i think Morrrison is real deal and he plays at great position for fantasy returns

that means that i will loose Berba+Ben Arfa

What do you guys think of these next 3GW transfers....

GW4 - Hazard IN - Bale OUT (Already done this transfer)
    GW5 - Pienaar IN - Kagawa OUT
    GW6 - Baines IN - Gallas/Rangel/Boyce OUT

    Current team is:

    Krul

    Boyce/Rangel/Gallas/Demel/Saylor

    Hazard/HBA/Kagawa/Michu/Guthrie

    RVP/Tevez/Graham

    Right:

    4.5 / 5

    4.5, 4, 4, 5.5, 5
    Dyer, Michu, Hazard, Santi, Gutherie
    Torres, RVP, Tevez

Now, does the wisdom of FFS think I should go with:
    1) Gutherie, Yaya and Podolski
    2) Gutherie, Santi, Torres
    3) Yaya, Santi, Lambert

Option 3 allows me Ivanovic instead of a 5.0, but otherwise it's all the same.

    Who to captain?

    Bent or Lambert?

On Bent right now. Thinking is that AV have to score sometime, and they are playing Swansea at home (who aren’t the best away) with a new LB.

I know neither is a great pick

    Thanks for the thoughts!

Snodgrass might be better, but I have to play 2 WHM defenders this week. So if he does well it still costs me. would rather a 4 pointer

West Brom have a decent defence and Jol doesn't seem to have settled on 2 from him, Berbatov, Rodallega and Ruiz. If I was Joel ( !) I'd do all in my powers to get Rodallega and Berbatov fighting fit and motivated. I reckon they're better footballers than the other two, but not consistent at all. Petric is a good big strong target man, not lacking in skill but Berbatov and Rodallega in full flight are worth watching.

Right, I messed this up, so:

    Foster / Begovic

    Cuellar, Demel, Davies, Gibbs, Ivanovic
    Santi, Yaya, Michu, Hazard, Dyer
    Pogrebnyak, RVP, Tevez

On a WC. Which of these is the best combination for the next few?

    1) Yaya, Santi, Pog

    2) Yaya, Guthrie, Podolski

    3) Santi, Guthrie, Torres

If I get Guthrie, Dyer will become Morrison, Nolan or McClean in time.

I'm concerned about having Pog when Guthrie would allow me Torres / Podolski instead. I'd rather have a mid as my cheapie. But transfering out Yaya for 3) is tough!

Yeah I get you, but it doesnt make sense taking out Yaya when he is getting good points. More often than not you will make the right call benching Pog, at least you know that is best choice most weeks so down to luck if he gets massive score on bench.

Berbatov is by miles the better striker. But if he worked as hard as Fletcher on his game he'd be one of the greats. He doesn't, Sir Alex didn't like him, he signed for Fulham whereas O'Neill broke the bank for Fletcher.

Exactly. We're talking bout now. Unless Jol can motivate he'll just be a lazy waste of talent to me. He'd lose and find Fletcher any day when he's on form. But Fletcher is making the most of what he has and doing well out of it, fair play to him.

It's a league in which all teams are required to have players only from those "x" teams.
In Parm's case, all players in the team should be from the bottom 7 clubs.

I wouldn't get in merte. Kosielny is back from injury and could come rotate in once they concede a couple of goals. Their fixtures are pretty crap after next gameweek too. I would keep Jenkinson until he stops playing then get rid as soon as Sagna plays his first minutes on the pitch. Jenks price will freefall after Sagna does this
