Watchlist

The Watchlist – Santi Cazorla

Since arriving at Arsenal from Malaga during the summer, Santi Cazorla has added his name to a raft of attacking midfielders Fantasy managers have been keeping a close eye on. As with the likes of the Premier League’s other new attacking recruits such as Chelsea’s Eden Hazard and Manchester United’s Shinji Kagawa, though, there was always an element of doubt before the season got under way; could these prestigious talents sparkle in the English top-flight and, as the old saying goes, were they able to cut it on a rainy Tuesday night match at Stoke?

Certainly from his opening two games, Cazorla’s talent was no longer in question as his slick passing and eye for goal from distance left Arsenal fans delighted and Fantasy managers licking their lips in anticipation of a flurry of points. From a Fantasy perspective doubts still remained, though, as his magnificent attacking play failed to unlock the Sunderland and Stoke defences as the Gunners registered back-to-back goalless draws.

In the Gameweek 3 trip to Liverpool, the flood gates opened and at last his potential as a key Fantasy asset was realised when the playmaker produced a goal, assist and two Fantasy Premier League (FPL) bonus points to amass a Gameweek total of 13 points. A further assist for Cazorla followed in the Gameweek 4 demolition of Southampton, with yet another assist, plus two FPL bonus points, in last weekend’s 1-1 draw at the Etihad. By now the writing was well and truly on the wall for Cazorla, who has arrived in a burst of Spanish flair as a proven force to be reckoned with in the Premier League.

For the savvy Fantasy managers, who have been watching Cazorla’s underlying attacking statistics closely during the first part of the season, Gameweek 7 has long been pencilled in as Santi day, when Arsenal’s tough opening fixtures come to an end. After this weekend’s home clash with Chelsea, the prospects look full of promise for strong attacking returns for the Gunners throughout the rest of October (whm, nor, QPR).

There is even strong argument for drafting him in ahead of this run to catch Cazorla before his price rises even further. Initially costing 9.0 in FPL, he has already climbed by 0.3, with over 28,000 Fantasy managers snapping him up this week. There is every chance Cazorla, who is Arsenal’s top points scorer in the FPL game with 30 points, will also be able to unlock a resolute Chelsea defence.

In the Sky Sports game, where he is priced at 6.7m, he is also set to be a key asset having already amassed 43 points, the second highest among the game’s midfielders. In the Sky game Cazorla is arguably even more desirable as bonus points are awarded for successful passes, just one of a number of attributes the bedazzling little Spaniard possesses.

      Neither.

Cuellar might be fit again this weekend.

I would swap Guthrie to Puncheon/Sterling this week, and save the other FT to have 2 next week.

Or, if Tevez looks likely to be benched, maybe switch Tevez out this week.

Who will get more points in this GW:
    A) Michu
    B) Bale

Currently have Michu but considering switch to Bale now - both have nice fixtures in the next GWs and don't think Michu will score against Stoke. Bale scoring against MUN is more probable 🙂 What do you say?

    Hello Forca

I'm sorry if you thought I gave you a bum steer on Jelavic. Without being able to assess the patient personally it's inherently difficult. i can only go on what I see and there certainly was the potential for ligament damage. It was a wide estimate, yes, but the indications in the article suggested the lower end of my 2-8 week estimate. He returned after about 10 days...so, apart from the wide estimate, I wasn't too far off.

The information I offer is supposed to help you to cross-reference with other news sources to give a fuller indication with which to base your decision on. The news that the Jelavic injury wasn't as serious as their own physios also thought came out from the middle to the end of the week...so, all in all, the information cross referenced and taken as a whole gave a quite accurate indication

With Carlos Cuellar, i would have hoped the article gave enough solid information not to sell. I thought he'd be fit for that weekend and i made a strong case for that in the article. I certainly didn't sell and he has been in my team all week.

Incidently, I was bang on the money for Aguero, RVP and Rooney updates.

As I suggested it's often difficult to forensically, remotely assess. i discussed the Stephen Ireland injury with a physio working full-time in professional football (I'm part-time) and although he had a clear prognosis, he would not let me name him in the article. Physios just won't put their name to speculation on the extent of any damage to a player. Club information can be mis-leading...take the example of Agger...Liverpool suggested a diagnosis of significant bone bruising...if this was true there would not be a chance of him being fit for Norwich or Stoke, but rumours indicate that he may...so it wasn't significant, it was, perhaps very minor, and even if this is correct, its a stretch, imo, to expect him to play this weekend, the risk of re-injury would be too great.

Like I say, some info from the clubs is correct and some isn't. Where i can see physio training ground photos, i can confidently predict his stage of rehabilitation (eg Aguero) or when i watch a match and see little wrong with a player from a pitch-side physio viewpoint (RVP, Cuellar) I can , again, offer more confidence. I hope i make clear in the articles my strong views and where prediction is a minefield...I will certainly pay more attention to this for future articles.

Please don't get me wrong, I don't mind criticism or feedback and the articles are still very much in the embryonic stage, but I feel they offer that extra detail that just isn't available anywhere else. i will get some wrong, but I'll get more right.

and, in fairness the reports of minor bruising

It's inherently difficult tp predict, but there are certain base-lines I can work with that offer me greater viability, such as the acute injury date and when they can start to run again. Official training pictures often offer great clues

Looking for some opinions on this, considering pulling a late wildcard this week and not sure whether it's the right choice... Current and WC teams below...

    Current team

    Foster - Begovic
    Baines - Cole - Demel - Hughes - Cuellar
    Bale - Pienaar - Michu - Nolan - Guthrie
    RVP - Tevez - Podolski

    0.0 in bank

    WC team

    Foster - Begovic
    Baines - Gibbs - Demel - Gorkks - Barnett
    Pienaar - Cazorla - HBA - Michu - Sterling
    Aguero - RVP - Lambert

    0.6 in bank

Any advice or help would be great!
