The Technical Area – Michu Moves Up Front

As Swansea’s schedule starts to take a turn for the worse, many Fantasy managers had pencilled in a transfer out for Michu over the next couple of matches. Prior to last weekend’s win over Wigan, Michael Laudrup’s side had failed to pick up the three points since Gameweek 2, with their early season form all but a distant memory, but Laudrup’s decision to drop Danny Graham and move the Spaniard into the role forward role may perhaps force some to reconsider moving on the former Rayo Vallecano man.

Intriguingly, last weekend was only the second time this season that Laudrup has fielded his four new midfielders – Michu, Pablo Hernandez, Jonathan de Guzman and Ki Sung-Yeung – in the same starting XI. The first time occurred in Gameweek 5 against Everton, though there were clear differences in the set-up; with the Toffees 2-0 up at the break, Hernandez was replaced by Nathan Dyer on the right, while both de Guzman and Michu played deeper – this time round, de Guzman took the role in “the hole” and Michu led the line.

Graham, Michu and de Guzman

Looking at Michu’s display from the Wigan match, compared to his Gameweek 1-7 stats and Danny Graham’s over the season so far, he certainly has staked a claim to remain in the role up front. Understandably, he saw less of the ball overall (40 touches to 56.4) with less inclination to drop back and link up with the central midfield three, but considering Graham has averaged just 21.1 touches, it’s a significant difference. Michu’s final third touches were near-identical (19 to 17.7) but again Graham’s 11 fares a lot worse off, while the same applies to passes received in the final third; Michu received almost double Graham’s average up top (12 to 6.5).

In terms of playing style, Michu attempted 3 dribbles on Saturday – far superior to Graham’s 0.6, and also improved upon his own number of shots, up from 2.3 in Gameweek 1-7 to four against the Latics; Graham has managed 1.9 per game and has scored just once all season. Right across the board, from minutes per attempts and minutes per chance created, Michu’s stats last weekend were better than his own previous average and Graham’s for the season so far, suggesting Laudrup may well have solved his striking dilemma.

TchsTchs Final 3rdPass Rcvd Final 3rdDribblesPen Box TchsShotsMins/AttemptChances CreatedMins/Chance Created
Graham GW 1-821.1116.50.64.41.938.50.5144.5

Michu GW 1-756.417.710.10.74.42.337.91.750.6
de Guzman GW865321924328328

Furthermore, analysing de Guzman’s stats from Saturday’s game suggests he could be more suited to the role in “the hole”, with Laudrup looking for a playmaker type to tuck in behind his lone forward, rather than the sheer goal threat afforded by Michu in the previous matches. The Dutchman had almost double the number of touches in the final third as Michu’s Gameweek 1-7 average in the same position (32 to 17.7) and received almost double the number of passes (19 to 10) in this crucial area. Both players’ penalty box touches are near identical when playing in the support role but while 1.6 of Michu’s average of 2.3 attempts in the first seven matches were inside the area, all three of de Guzman’s efforts on Saturday arrived from outside the box.

In addition, de Guzman’s stats in “the hole” are superior to Michu’s both in terms of minutes per attempt (28 to 37.9) and minutes per chance created (28 to 50.6). Further analysis of their respective distribution stats shows that de Guzman made 16 passes in the final third against Wigan – more or less double Michu’s in Gameweeks 1-7, while his pass accuracy was substantially superior in the final third; 94.1% compared to 76.9%. With his set-piece duties also factored in, de Guzman provided 11 crosses (Michu’s average was 0.3) and also returned a pair of assists in the 2-1 win – with the Spaniard also getting on the score sheet for the sixth time this term, Laudrup’s personnel switch seems to have been the perfect solution to his side’s recent woes.

Hernandez and Dyer

While Wayne Routledge continues to nail down the left wing role, with seven starts in the opening eight matches under Laudrup, the right flank berth seems to be a battle between Pablo Hernandez and Nathan Dyer at present. Looking at Hernandez’s average position when on the ball against Wigan (below left) in comparison to Dyer’s over the season (below right) suggests the Spaniard gives his side more width and attacking impetus – a fact which the stats back up.

Hernandez Average Position GW8
Dyer Average Position GW1-8

Although the pair are virtually identical for touches (56 to 56.5), minutes per touch and passes made, Hernandez’s more offensive style of play saw him make 34 touches in the Wigan final third – a huge jump on Dyer’s season average of 23.2. Foraging forward into the opposition danger area, Hernandez received 29 passes in the final third – more than double Dyer’s 12.9 for the season – and as a result of playing higher up the pitch, he produced six crosses on Saturday, which is four time Dyer’s season average.

TchsTchs Final 3rdMins/TouchPass Rcvd Final 3rdDrbbsPen Box TchsPasses MadeCrossesShots
Hernandez GW856341.329363462
Dyer GW 1-856.523.21.212.94.52.2351.51.5

The latter’s tendency to take on the opposition means he impresses more when it comes to attempted dribbles, though the former Valencia man looks to offer Laudrup’s side a greater goal threat – he managed six touches in the penalty area, compared to Dyer’s average of 2.2, and also grabbed his first goal of the season.

Swansea Team Involvement Stats

What is intriguing here is that Swansea, with just 46.8% possession against Wigan, had less of the ball than in any other game so far this season. Michu and de Guzman’s possession stats from the weekend suggest that Laudrup is looking for them to be more direct in their play, with less build-up from the back and more of a focus in getting the ball to the front players more quickly.

Swansea had just 668 touches on Saturday – this was the second lowest the Welsh outfit has registered thus far under their new manager, yet their attacking stats are impressive. In the final third, they had 203 touches, their third highest in 2012/13, while a total of 25 penalty box touches against the Latics has been bettered only once this term.

Swap Pyatov for Malafeev? Is Pyatov really on 5 points, 3 saves 3 points?

Top story on SSN is about Spurs, but:

              AVB: Adebayor has Spurs role

Seems unlikely that AVB would be making comments about the Southhampton game before the Maribor game is over. I would wait till after the Maribor game before taking Bale rumors as fact.

Was preparing this when the article popped up on Michu so I'll post anyway as I think it's relevant:

I checked out the alternatives for Michu and analysed the statistics, made some of my own short-term projections and compared them with the FFS ones and came to the following conclusions:

Nolan and Morisson are good bets and are equally valued but the move isn't urgent due to the pair's poor fixtures. In the balance of things it probably isn't worth swapping Michu for one of them in the next 3 weeks, especially if he will be playing further forward and will have a chance to increase his goal threat.

Lallana also looks a decent punt due to hist fixtures but Ramirez would be preferable if he continue the good form he showed before his injury so it might be worth holding off until he recovers.

Upgrading Michu to Mata would also look like a solid move if you've got the funds available or perhaps if you plan to do Tevez > Ba/Berba at some point.

I looked at Barfa but I don't really understand why he gets so much love on these boards. He's a very talented player but from an FPL perspective I don't fancy his value. His shooting is wayward (12 shots in the last 6 games, 10 of which were outside of the box and only 3 of the 12 on target) and he's not creating as many chances as a lot of the other players I've mentioned. I would much prefer to have Ba from Newcastle so I personally won't be considering Barfa in the near future.

There were one or two other options that I dismissed due to lack of secure playing time/unpredictablility/being an unproven FPL prospect.

So, even if I thought Lennon's place was totally safe and his playing time won't be affecter by Dempsey and Siggy both playing, I still wouldn't personally consider him good value as his goal threat is weak. His creativity is good it nowhere near makes up for his poor goal threat IMO as he's relying on others to put away the chances he creates.

If he was significantly cheaper I might have been tempted.

it's risky making assumptions on small samples, or in FPL in general tbh, but michu has so far been the most predictable player in the league. easy game = score, tougher game = blank.
3 tougher games in the next 4, plus what seems an inevitable ban i'm very seriously considering ditching for a while. admittedly it's a bit easier as i only bought him for 7.1 but i think him out for at least the next 4 is very doable. lennon for 2 then ben arfa. even just an assist for lennon and that'd do me. if michu's ban falls on the southampton game it'll be a disaster

I agree with your comment on his ban and I hadn't really taken that into account. I guess the ideal scenario would be a booking vs. City. Benching him for that one (assuming you have a decent alternative to play) might be the wise move this week but I'll personally be forced to play him if I keep him.

As for your comments regarding small sample sizes, I tried to go off data from last season when possible. For example, I'm happy enough with my assessment of Morrison, Barfa and Lennon on that basis and Nolan has perhaps been over performing when you consider his shots on target vs. goals. He is a good finisher though and has a lot of shots inside the box so I think my analysis is fair.

Obviously Michu, Lallana and Ramirez's analysis is based on a small sample size too but I think Michu has a chance to improve his figures if he keeps his more advanced role. For that reason I still won't be selling Michu hastily.

yeah not doubting your analysis at all, the small sample line was referring to what i was about to say about michu being predictable this season

I came to a similar conclusion on the last story earlier today. Nolan and Morrison are the standout choices. Both are far better than HBA. Also Lallana is pretty decent away.

I'm not convined by Michu with those fixtures....but may just keep this week to have two frees next week.

Indeed. The fact that I'm not really sold on either Nolan or Morrison given their goal threat/creativity stats and their fixtures is enough to put me off a move this week.

Tevez > Ba & Michu > big hitter next week could be the best course of action depending on other developments.

            Good Post.

I am considering Michu >Bale for free this weekend instead of Haz > Bale. However, if i do the latter, I will not beable to bring in Ba until GW 11.

I totally agree with you on HBA btw.

How essential is it to have Ba in GW10 If i have Berbatov?

Good question! Not sure I can answer that one. His goal threat was beastly vs. Sunderland and if he can keep improving and keep his central position in the side he could easily be top scorer on FPL over the next few weeks. Whether all those things will happen is beyond me I'm afraid.

Michu > Bale seems good in the short-term and I wouldn't personally be in a rush to sell any of your strikers.

IF Bale is out, I might just push that wild card button after all.

          Like it?

          Bego (McCarthy)
          Baines, Wilson, Simpson (Hughes, Cuellar)
Mata, Santi, Ben Arfa, Sterling (Michu)
          Rooney, Tevez, Ba

Would have been better if I haven't already lost lot of value on Mata, Sterling etc 🙁

Why does something have to be wrong with the baby for him to not play this weekend?

I took 2 weeks off when both my kids were born. Wife often has to sleep the same time as baby does as she needs to be awake when the baby is awake for feeds etc.

Funnily enough, babies have no sense or concept of time so they wake up all hours of the day and night which is extremely exhausting. So there are lots of things you need to do around the house and your wife/partner isn't always able to do them.

I say good for him if he's taking his parenting responsibilities seriously and putting his young family first.

            Season projections:
            Hazard -> Mata ---> Oscar

I think Hazard will take penalties and right-footed corners when Lampard is out (he's even taking most corners when Lamps is playing) and Lamps is getting rotated a lot when he's fit as well. I also think that he will be a bigger goal threat than Mata in the coming big games, even with the form Mata is in. Mata was invisible versus a well organized Shaktar defense, while Hazard had at least two major goal chances and seemed much more lethal overall.

He's a good option then, but it makes Michu an even better one.

Routledge is still not bad for an 8th attacker.

Something I've been worrying about is my inability to easily get in a 3rd 9m+ midfielder at some point if I wanted to. I'm looking at Bale and Silva as being the prime targets. I've heard it discussed before on here that with more value around December/January a heavy-hitting midfield is more obtainable and less disruptive to the overall balance of your team by then.

I'm getting a little nervous by how much changes I would need to do to get Silva and Bale in alongside Caz and Mata right now. I desperately want one of them at some point.

My question is whether sticking to the cheaper mids is a better idea right now because there is more opportunity to make some money and therefore afford the bigger hitters later on?

I would say having big hitting midfielders is the best way to ensure getting a turnabout in pts and rank...
i used this policy for 2 years back to back, and still continuing it this year
But the issue is that is a risky one, for with big hitting midfielders u give up on the RvP situation and Rooney and Aguero...
My only question is that if u get those big hitting midfielders whom would ur forward line be?

My forward line at the moment is RVP Fletcher Ba. I've no intention of getting rid of RVP or Ba for the time being...but who would I downgrade Fletcher to that would free up cash? I don't see any 6/6.5 strikers being very reliable right now.

                Thats the idea mate!
If there was a free scoring 6mill up front he'd be in most of our teams and that would accompany a heavier midfield...
Until u decide that RvP in unessential or ur forwards are NOT reliable anymore do this tactic and go for the ULTRA midfield
Until then, dont do the ULTRA midfield option 🙂 or until mid season at least 😀

I don't like Lambert though right now and getting rid of Ba scares me.

I actually think Long or Lukaku could be a good shout. Long if he continues to start and if there's an injury Lukaku as I have a feeling he might be world class.

Yeah my switch of Tevez-->Lambchops was a disaster since I've been one week to late each time I chopped and changed my mf.

I prefer Morrison to Long. Lamb is on the chopping block. South have amazing fixt on paper and I just hope the start playing Lamb again. Otherwise Dalilalana is an option.

I might take a punt on Crouch(don't laugh)

It's hard to predict who those good value cheaper mids will be though. See my analysis of the options above if you're interested.

I also believe money spent in midfield is well invested, especially since you can usually get quite a few decent cheap defenders and the glut of good value strikers available.

I wouldn't be in a rush to get Silva though until his injury has cleared up, he's back in form and he's playing every week. Bale is the stand-out option of the midfield big hitters at the moment IMO so I'd look to get him in regardless of how many other big hitters you have.

I see, I had a feeling that was the crux of it. I'm just reluctant to let Rafael go so easily...I could be kicking myself down the line...I think I may have to just live and hope Bale doesn't do anything explosive for a while.

Exactly...for some reason I can see it happening more often this year as last year Fulham had Dempsey as their main threat...but he was midfielder so the full backs were less important to his goals...if you get me. And Zamora would hold up the ball and be boring old Zamora...not a poacher like Berba is. I think Riise's assists may continue!

Raf is cool. I'm thinking Jevans or Raf by gw 11 for their run. Riisse did well for you last wk, but somehow I never trust Ful at the back.

I'm tempted to do Rangel->Lescott for 4 weeks and then Lescott->Evans/Raf, but it could potentially be a disaster with rotation

Long/Luk are nice differentials. They have some nice fixtures coming up heading into the Jan WC. Are you keeping Nolan during their "tough run"?

I think with a bit of luck his price will be steady and maybe even rise. I don't want to pay even more for him as I want him around gw 20 over the Festive period.

I would like to get Bale in but I think there's some good value players in midfield at the moment such as Nolan and Morrison. I sort of see Baines as my 3rd big hitting midfielder right now.

It easier in January because not only should your team value be higher, but some players will reveal themselves as absolute bargains. Also, heaven forbid, but there's always the chance of a long-term injury to a high priced player which has the upside of freeing up funds...

"Obviously, every player wants to play, at the moment we are using the structure of one striker and Defoe has been doing extremely well," Villas-Boas told Sky Sports News.

"I think Ade has done extremely well in the games where he has come in for the squad, certainly he is in contention for games where we play with two strikers.

"At the moment we haven't found the comfort in that formation yet, but in the future when we use it, when we rotate the strikers he will be back in contention."

Looks like Defoe is almost 100% nailed on.

I am just wondering how does that reveal itself in stats. Is he taking shots from longer distance or smthng. If not than I see no reason why he could not convert his chances at the same clip as he did last year which would make him great value.

            From my post above:

"I looked at Barfa but I don’t really understand why he gets so much love on these boards. He’s a very talented player but from an FPL perspective I don’t fancy his value. His shooting is wayward (12 shots in the last 6 games, 10 of which were outside of the box and only 3 of the 12 on target) and he’s not creating as many chances as a lot of the other players I’ve mentioned."

I was trying to get at the fact that the two statistic that have the strongest correlation with goals scored (i.e. shots on target and shots inside the box) are poor in his case when compared to the alternatives.

As AppleBonkers rightly pointed out though, that is only a small sample size. However, looking at his stats from last season reveal a similar story.

You could argue that he is a special talent and has the ability to go past a few players and/or produce an amazing finish but those kind of things are hard to predict and I think a player with consistent goal threat is a better FPL option.
