Injuries

International Week – The Withdrawals

As always, the midweek raft of international matches has harvested plenty of withdrawals ahead of next weekend’s Fantasy deadline. In general, these do tend to be no more than cautionary measures by clubs and while there’s no real reason to be overly anxious, we thought it’d be worthwhile to roll out an update on those currently affected…

Undoubtedly, the most high profile name affected is Robin Van Persie. The United forward has apparently picked up a “minorthigh problem and has been omitted from Holland’s friendly clash with Germany on Wednesday. At this stage, it’s fair to say that we’d fully expect Van Persie to be available for United’s trip to Norwich – in many ways, his withdrawal is good news given his past experience on international duty.

Van Persie’s Old Trafford team mate Wayne Rooney is also afforded the midweek off. He has withdrawn from the England squad to face Sweden with the ankle injury which forced him off at Villa on Saturday evening. Theo Walcott has pulled out as a result of the glute injury sustained in Saturday’s draw with Fulham, while ahead of next weekend’s north London derby at the Emirates, Spurs pair Aaron Lennon and Kyle Walker are also unavailable for Roy Hodgson. Liverpool’s Jonjo Shelvey has withdrawn after failing to recover from the thigh injury which forced him out of Sunday’s draw at Chelsea, while Anfield team mate Steven Gerrard is to have a precautionary scan after picking up a knee problem at the Bridge. The latest from the FA this evening indicates that Gerrard will be fit to win his 100th cap, however.

Demba Ba has this afternoon withdrawn from the Senegal squad to face Niger on Wednesday. Although the forward seemed to have no problems in yesterday’s 1-0 home defeat at the hands of West Ham and played the full 90 minutes, Alan Pardew revealed post-match that Ba was “struggling a little bit” with his recent shin complaint. Sammy Ameobi is another Newcastle man out of midweek action. He missed yesterday’s defeat to West Ham with a hamstring injury and has pulled out of contention for the England U21s.

City’s Gael Clichy has also made his excuses ahead of France’s game with Italy. The left-back picked up a back problem in yesterday’s win over Spurs. He is due to have painkilling injections on the injury this week according to City’s assistant David Platt.

Earlier this evening, QPR’s Ryan Nelsen became the latest “casualty” – he misses out on a lengthy flight to China for New Zealand’s friendly due to ankle and knee injuries according to the club.

Scotland have been hammered by a number of call-offs ahead of their trip to Luxembourg, with as many as seven Premier League players all handing in sick notes so far. Sunderland pair Phil Bardsley and Steven Fletcher have pulled out – the former missed the weekend trip to Everton with a hamstring injury, while Fletcher was replaced on 69 minutes at Goodison after sustaining an ankle problem.

Wigan’s Shaun Maloney has picked up an abdominal problem, while Charlie Adam and James Morrison – who both scored for Stoke and West Brom respectively last Saturday – have been ruled out with groin injuries. Villa’s Barry Bannan (knee) and QPR’s Jamie Mackie (ankle) are also ruled out for their country.

Northern Ireland are without the services of Jonny Evans, after the United centre-half withdrew with the groin injury which forced him out of the weekend win at Villa, while Everton’s Kevin Mirallas is out with a hamstring problem sustained midway through the first-half of Saturday’s win over Sunderland.

This leaves us fretting on those who will be active participants in the midweek matches with the Spaniards – Juan Mata and Santi Cazorla perhaps key concerns given that they face a lengthy trip to Panama for their friendly. Meanwhile, Luis Suarez will likely turn out for Uruguay in Poland, while Pablo Zabaleta, Sergio Aguero and Franco Di Santo (no really), all travel with Argentina to Saudi Arabia for their friendly; Carlos Tevez remains at home once again. There’s a whole host of Belgian stars making the trip to Romania, with Eden Hazard and Marouane Fellaini the headline acts in that one from a Fantasy perspective. It’s going to be a nervous few days.

As always, we’re recording all the knocks and scrapes over in the injuries and bans table and this will include any injuries that occur over the midweek matches. Then, later this week, we’ll be working through to clear them out as the latest team news arrives prior to the weekend.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Are all the people selling Tevez this week not worrying that he could have a mega haul against Villa?
I really want to get Giroud in but can't bring myself to loose Carlos. A full weeks rest with no internationals almost guarantees him a starting role IMO and sooner or later Man City will be giving some team a spanking (especially at home).

I have Silva myself too but still think it would be a massive risk to loose Tevez hust because of how explosive he could potentially be. Villa at home is just to hard to look past for me.

With all the great options up front I can totally see why people are looking past Tevez, it's just I can't bring myself to do it before the Villa game. But players like Berba/Giroud could outscore him anyway.

I did Tevez to Berbs yesterday because it is too hard to ignore him anymore. City does not have the spark but I reckon the machine needs a few games to get back to business and then I can see Aguero firing

        ha ha

In all seriousness. If i do the transfers I'm looking at, I'll have 10.6 to upgrade Jelly. Want Suarez in GW14, he's gone up 0.1 already this week, on 65% for another rise. Will i be able to wait until then?

At the start of GW12 he could be 10.1, so at the start of 13 he could hit 10.4. Should make it I reckon. (assuming he goes up 0.3 in both GWs between now and then)

you may be right, but i am saying the most he could get to is 10.4.

However Brede is currently being shipped by about 500 teams a day. Looks almost certain he'll fall.

Same plan, Suarez in for Jelly after 14. But I don't think I'll be able to afford him by then.

Hoping he gets the 5th yellow against Wigan and his price drops.

Jelly to Giroud is Plan B.

Brede now on 93% to fall. This could be close. Just need him to hold out this GW and I can flog him Saturday. I don't like early transfers but i may have no option in that case

Evening chaps - what do I do with this bunch of chumps?

    Bego (Foster)

    Baines, Cuellar, Demel, (Cameron), (Clyne)

    Mata, Bale, Cazorla, HBA, (Sterling)

    RVP, Jelavic, Lambert

2 FTs and £0.1 in the bank.

I think Lambert and either Caz or HBA need to go. But for who?

He got his goals against West Brom, Reading and Arsenal, only West Brom have a decent defence and not not always. Next 6 are Sunderland, Stoke, Chelsea, Spurs, Toon and Queens Park Strangers. Berbatov was a class act, still a great player but can't see him scoring more than 4 in those 6 games.

I'm agonising over the Cazorla > Silva move. It's not really something you do for kicks. It's sort of a long term investment in Silva and City coverage.

Walcott's presence basically kills off half of Cazorla's strength which is set pieces. If Walcott is on them permanently then Cazorla's less likely to get assists that way. But the other thing is I do expect Cazorla will still maintain a decent scoring average.

I'm really stuck whether to do this move before he drops.

    Any advice?

Well yes if you don't plan to bring city strikers later on like Aguero. You could consider Bale.
Walcott played great on saturday, his crossing was perfect and got 2 assists. Cazorla cannot justify his price tag at the moment.

i find it highly amusing how we always have players getting injured the week of international games, and its almost always players who are key to their clubs. I bet if this was a champions league week every one of these players will want to get better and play for their team. Its an honor and privilege to play for your country. I feel like some players take it as granted and do not appreciate it as much as they should.

I think your right actually though of course players traveling half way round the world have more issues.
Also peeps here seem to take for granted phantom injuries_I know RVP injury is a fact, so people should be more careful of there opinions really.
