Scout Notes

The Stock Check – Tuesday

Calamitous defending hands Swansea three points as Wigan slip to a defeat that seems likely to finally cost them their Premier League status. The five goals at the DW Stadium dwarf the efforts of City and West Brom at the Etihad, as the two managers shuffle their packs, much to the frustration of us Fantasy managers. Here’s the Stock Check from Tuesday’s pair of matches…

On the Up

Carlos Tevez
The Argentine had started the last seven prior to Saturday’s trip to Swansea, scoring three goals in that run. Dropped to the bench as Roberto Mancini went with Sergio Aguero in a 4-5-1, Tevez was recalled against West Brom tonight and fetched a smart fourteenth assist of the season for Edin Dzeko’s well taken first-half goal. While that was some reward for his frustrated owners over the double Gameweek, Tevez’s starting role against Reading and Norwich perhaps remains uncertain, although his prospects may well be improved should he be benched for the FA Cup final this weekend.

Angel Rangel
Selected on the Scout Picks bench, the Spaniard added to his clean sheet against City with a beautifully taken goal at the DW Stadium tonight – he is currently the top scoring defender in the Gameweek pre-bonus. Rangel has largely been a mainstay in the Swansea back four and, while his return of just one assist is hugely disappointing, he will remain a consideration for our squads next term should Michael Laudrup’s side be handed a kind opening schedule.

Pablo Hernandez
A brace of assists tonight took the Spanish playmaker to eight for the season and helped fill the void left by Michu’s absence with a hamstring injury. Like Rangel, Hernandez’s returns have perhaps dipped below expectations but he will be another worth monitoring: having settled in his first season in the Premier League, there is surely good things to come next term under Laudrup.

Going Down

Roberto Mancini
The City boss won few fans amongst the Fantasy fraternity after fielding a much-changed side that included eight tweaks with a completely different back four to the one that took on Swansea. With the FA Cup final beckoning at the weekend, we perhaps shouldn’t be too surprised to see changes although, having made significant investment in City over the double Gameweek, many will find it hard to swallow. City’s remaining two fixtures at least promise returns, presuming that Mancini recalls his big guns following the Wembley date.

Steve Clarke
Identified as a minor villain in our recent “This Much We Know” article, Clarke lived up to his billing to rival Mancini but juggling his assets for the trip to the Etihad. While we expected changes up front with Shane Long dropping to the bench, the absence of Ben Foster and Gareth McAuley were not anticipated.

Michel Vorm
Stretchered off on 85 minutes, the Dutch stopper looked in a bad way following a clash of heads with team-mate, Ben Davies. The latest reports stated that he was “up and about” post-match: it remains to be seen if Vorm sustained a degree of concussion which would make him a potential doubt for the weekend trip to Old Trafford.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

I'm warming to the idea of Moyes > Man utd. There are few managers that have been that consistently successful with a side who are sadly always just that little bit away from being top 4 or winning silverware. He has outdone himself and has exceeded Everton's expectations time and time again.

It will be nice to see him get a big job where he can finally flex his managerial muscles and see some real success through silverware so he is finally rewarded with more than just praise.

If you look at the league this year, Everton had/have had no right to be a club that have only lost 6 games all season in the league...but yet they are. If Moyes can do that with Everton, surely he can do it with a team with better resources.

I used to not think Moyes would get the man utd job...and maybe these are just rumours...but it would be a fine appointment and one that would make other clubs envious that they never went out of their way to attract him.

If it does happen though, spare a thought for the Evertonians. What a tragedy it will be to lose such a strong manager. And it amuses me that some were calling for his head earlier on because he 'couldn't take them any further'...you don't know what you got til' it's gone 😉

An unpopular opinion but... Personally I think the manager's role is overhyped.
I think that no matter who takes over at Man Utd (within reason), they will still have a lot of success. Unless all of the other management/coaching staff are retiring too.

Aye, I'm not saying the manager isn't important, that would be daft.

But I do think that Man Utd have built up a brilliant foundation and it would take a lot to shake it no matter who comes in.

You look at Chelsea over the past decade and what you say makes sense: the manager isn't that important. But they've only won the league once in 6 or 7 years since Mourinho went. That's not how Manchester United define success.

yes but what Moyes embodies is something similar to Fergie...a stable, reliable and hard-working manager that can't stand losing and won't accept players giving anything less than 100%. You can tell there is an aura about Moyes that makes him something special and someone you can/could trust with your football club. He is also quite astute in the transfer market.

I agree that sometimes any manager with these resources can be on auto-pilot and still bring success. but the main thing is that Moyes above pretty much any other British manager deserves a go at something like this imo. The great work is there for all to see and it would be great to see him rewarded with a bigger job.

My dad is an Everton supporter so I've always really had a soft spot for them. I hope if he does go that they select his successor wisely and don't rush into it. They've started a template for how to run a football club...with longevity in mind. Or maybe they just struck upon gold when they appointed Moyes and knew he was too good to ever let go of!

because winning a cup is pot luck sometimes, Everton don't have it in their nature to win cups in this era. Man utd/Chelsea/arsenal/liverpool have all dominated the cups.

He also has had a small pool of players often which makes it harder to treat the cups with more seriousness. He barely rotated/rested his side all season this year for lack of options.

What's more impressive is finishing top 4/5/6 so many years despite the disadvantages.

Mourinho is the anti-stability option though you must admit. Mourinho has never stayed at a club long enough to even get to know the tea lady.

And with his Chelsea affiliations it's always a dodgy one. What man utd need to do more than anything is trust whoever their new manager is...and Moyes is the type that can be trusted...he is pragmatic and very rarely loses his cool. Not to mention, he has been simply superb at building a team that can compete in the top 4/5/6 every year.

I honestly think Liverpool need to stop thinking about the top 4 right now, they have been a breath of fresh air this year...playing some great football and despite Suarez's antics, one of the best players to watch in the world.

I think what matters is you are building a team of young players that is exciting to watch and Rodgers' style really suits you.

but what I mean RCA is that the weight of expectation has been lifted a bit and brought some much needed positivity back to a club that was in dire need of it. I think setting the bar really high is just the wrong thing to do right now. Yes, aim for top 4, but don't make it out to be like the be all and end all. What's important is to just keep focused on building a strong team for the future.

It was tongue in cheek. I love Rafa but don't want him back. Most of us are well prepared to give Rodgers a fair chance. But like I said, big pressure on him to produce a top 4.

Seems pointless. From all accounts he's a far better left winger than striker, which we really dont need at the moment. Not sure if De Bruyne is involved with any deal but all rumours point to him staying in Germany, which would be a shame, as he's been excellent from what I've heard and seen this year.

Presumably this is Emelano's work, not sure if Mourinho would be too happy with such a figure presiding over signings if he were to come back...

as a liverpool fan il be glad to see the back of him. he's a magician, particularly this season, where he turned mediocrity into gold. united will never ever replace that psychological edge that he gave them. with him gone, teams will finally realise that thay can actually win and no longer go into games believing they have already lost.

Just as happened with Liverpool..United need to forget him once he's gone and move on or they could fall into the same trap as happened with your team....It matters not a jot what last years team did...or the last decade...It's only what happens next Saturday.

I reckon Moyes' lack of big European game experience and that he's not used to dealing with a big transfer budget count against him, but who knows.

Mourinho for me is more likely, if he's not already at Chelsea that is, as he brings almost guaranteed success but also a lot of baggage and doesn't stay too long at any one club.

Dortmund's Klopp might be an outsider, as he's bound to be unsettled by his top players leaving and will see United as a huge step up.

Probably to clear up rumours. Fergie is the type to announce his retirement himself and 100% this statement will not say he is retiring. If he is going to do it he will at home v swansea after the title has been awarded. He will get on the mic and tell the fans.
