Scout Notes

Scout Notes – Gameweek 36 – Wednesday

Chelsea and Tottenham share the spoils in a four goal thriller at the Bridge, with the hosts now two points clear of Arsenal in the race for third spot. With Gareth Bale, Juan Mata and Eden Hazard all drawing blanks, Oscar, Ramires and Emmanuel Adebayor plunder the points in the final match of double Gameweek 36:

Oscar in the Goals Again
The Brazilian headed into the double in the most attacking form of any Chelsea midfielder, with goals in each of his last two appearances prior to last weekend’s deadline. Oscar continued that form by grabbing the opener against Tottenham last night, taking his tally to three in his last four matches – compare that to Juan Mata, who has failed to score since Gameweek 25, and it’s obvious the Brazilian is flourishing within Rafa Benitez’s side. Oscar fully justified his selection as headline act in last week’s Spot the Differential article and, having remained in the shadow of Mata and Eden Hazard for much of the season, could benefit from a kindlier price in next season’s Fantasy games. If he continues in the same vein, Oscar looks a hugely promising option for the 2013/14 campaign.

Hazard’s owners were left frustrated last night after the Belgian produced a blank at the Bridge. Back in the side after recovering from the calf complaint that forced him out of Sunday’s win at Old Trafford, he lasted 72 minutes before being withdrawn. After the match, Benitez revealed the winger had “a small injury” but should be okay for the weekend trip to Villa – many will be contemplating a transfer out, though, with Benitez perhaps unlikely to risk the Belgian ahead of the Wednesday’s Europa League final with Benfica.

Benitez Hints at Weekend Rotation
In a week where Roberto Mancini’s eight alterations for City hit Fantasy plans hard, Rafa Benitez was an unlikely ally last night. Surprisingly, the Chelsea boss made just three changes to the side that got the better of United on Sunday, with fit-again Eden Hazard, Fernando Torres and Gary Cahill replacing Victor Moses, Demba Ba and Frank Lampard. The latter’s omission allowed David Luiz to return to central midfield, with Cahill partnering Branislav Ivanovic at centre-half in a Gameweek that intriguingly saw Benitez fail to hand John Terry a single minute’s action.

We’d highlighted Ramires as a “Cheeky Punt” in last week’s Scouting the Doubles mainly due to his security of starts and he vindicated our belief by grabbing his fifth of the season – he has now started 14 of the last 16 under Benitez, as good as it gets in terms of being classified a regular under the interim manager. More frustratingly for those holding City’s main assets, the draw leaves Chelsea six points behind Mancini’s men with just two games to go – given that City have a trip to Reading and home game against Norwich to see out the season, the likes of Sergio Aguero and David Silva could well be subject to rest and rotation over the last couple of games if Mancini looks to hand some fringe players game time.

After last night’s game, however, Benitez suggested that he could be set to make changes for Saturday lunchtime’s trip to Villa. With the clash four days before the Benfica showdown, the Spaniard conceded:

“We didn’t have the legs, we had some players tired and we had a problem with the full-backs going forward so we had to control them but in the middle also they had too many bodies, people that could hold the ball…We are managing the squad quite well but the tempo was too high so we needed to work hard and we were working hard in the first half but if we can manage with different players we will be fine. We have to think about winning the next game and being ready for the final. We have to manage players, manage the squad and find the balance.”

Rare Blank for Bale
A run of four successive double figure hauls came to an end last night as the Welshman suffered a rare off day. With Gylfi Sigurdsson and Lewis Holtby producing the points from midfield instead with a goal and assist respectively, Andre Villas-Boas went toe to toe with his former club and left with a draw in spite of a lack of input from his talisman. Bale now has a trip to Stoke on his agenda this weekend and with a home game against Sunderland on the final day of the season, he still has a chance of finishing the campaign as top scoring FPL player – a Gameweek 36 total of 12 points means he is just nine points behind Robin Van Persie at the top of the overall standings.

Adebayor the Tottenham Hero
Having missed the Gameweek 35 trip to Wigan through injury, the Togo international was overlooked last week as over 44,000 Fantasy managers turned to Jermain Defoe instead. After emerging from the bench to notch a superb goal in the Gameweek 34 win over City, there was a suggestion that Defoe could finally oust Adebayor from the lone forward role – two back-to-back 90 minute appearances prior to last night boded well but he was back on the bench last night as Adebayor stepped up to produce. The former Arsenal and City star grabbed a goal and assist for the second time in his last three starts and is finally starting to settle in a season that has proved a huge let down after last year’s exploits on loan at the club. Certainly, his starting price across the Fantasy games is likely to be kind next summer given this term’s struggles and, if can nail down a starting berth, Adebayor could be worth our consideration once again, with Bale likely to be slapped with a significant price hike for the north London outfit.

So with Rooney asking to leave again, where to you think he''l want to go?
United said he's not for sale but he's not as essential as he used to be.

I hope he goes abroad, maybe to Bayern? It would be good to see him with something to prove and it's been far too long since a top English player proved himself in another league.

Yeah...his time is done at United. No going back from this, first time he did it maybe but it's hard to see a way forward with a wanna away player the second time.

His stock has fallen a bit outside England in the last year or so. I think it will either be to a team with more money than substance, like PSG, or an English team. In the position Bayern are in I don't think they would have him. He's also on gigantic wages which might be problematic.

Interesting. I just wonder whether he'd move to another English club. After doing the whole forever blue misjudgment before surely he wouldn't join one of utd's biggest domestic rivals.

    LAMPARD VS CAZORLA

I have a 35pt lead in my league and 2d placed team has Lampard (i have theo and mata as well, he has neither of them)

will Benitez field his best side for the next two matches? this means lampard benched or will he play lampard to help him for the goalscoring record ?

Cazorla is long due with 6 matches without producing anything! wigan coming from fa cup final and playing for relegation dont u think this might be an open match with lots of spacing for a quality player like Cazorla?

    so Lampard or cazorla?

    i will appreciate some comments
    thanks

I'm considering Defoe out options also. Currently favouring Sturridge but am being put off by the fact that I already have Coutinho & GJ in my team. Benteke is a good bet for GW38 but can't see Villa scoring many against that Chelsea defence. Hadn't considered Pod, but same dilemma for me as Sturridge (reluctant to triple up!)

Although people are correct in saying the Wigan defence is a mess, in recent matches I've watched with Arsenal they seem quite content to get a goal early on and then just keep possession. Might be different knowing how bad Wigan are at the back, but they'll also be wary that Wigan will attack them and will probably be happy enough to just soak it up.

If they go for Wigan it could be a big score, but will they? One of their players I'm sure even said recently they'll be happy enough to keep winning 1-0 for the rest of the season, which seems to be the plan.

Just some thoughts I've been having.

I didn't see any of the QPR match to tell, but at Fulham they didn't look bothered, maybe because Fulham gave up weeks ago. And at United after getting the early goal they just knocked the ball about.

At least Wigan will have a go and probably leave themselves exposed.

There was very much a plan to push hard for the early goal and then soak for the rest which should have worked had Sagna not given away the pen. We never get goals galore at QPR as their pitch is too small for us.

so are you thinking they will bash Wigan? Or go a goal up and hold? Because they are much better at soaking now, but Wigan showed at Spurs that they will be constantly pressing which Arsenal don't really get much of.

Any ideas for some differentials so crazy that they might work? There's a healthy crop of last hurrahs in the form of Scholes and Carragher whose teams don't have a great deal to play.

Any others? Perhaps some little known youth player that has been scoring for fun in the reserves and might get a run out in first team?

What isn't on that CV is that he has brought Everton from a bottom of the league club to a Champions League contender and a consistent European football competition position. All on a tight budget.

He also gets involved with all aspects of the club, demands respect from the dressing room and looks after the longevity of the club he is at.

He is the man for the job.

Strong focus on youth development. Likes to be involved in all aspects of management of players, from diet to fitness levels etc. So a mini -Fergie.

The key question from a fantasy football point of view will be whether he adopts the squad mentality or sticks with a steady first 11. He had a first 11 at Everton because he had no choice so had to guage whether he will chop and change.

what are you aiming for? I have Zaba and Hazard and am worried about gametime but I'm 60 points ahead in my ML so I can cope. I think you have to just hope for the best and put the players who have good fixtures in. Maybe minimise the risk by losing one of Mata/Hazard, but then there's no telling which of them will play. Really dodgy stage of the season this.

Lukaku and WBA looks play for nothing, they already safe from relegation. so, Sturridge maybe, Liverpool still motivated to finish above Everton, but the only concern is they will play without Gerrard, Suarez, and Agger.

Hey GGGGranville, Well played on your late surge, a top 10,000 spot isn't off the cards. How you playing it this week? Any thoughts from one Manc to another on how I could improve my team? It's linked. I was thinking Berba to Sturridge but tempted by Tevez to Adebayor on the basis Tevez might play very little in the last 2 matches.

Not that you asked me but I think Granville is right considering that Adebayor has been an enigma this season.

One good game doesn't mean he's back on form. His positioning for a lot of the first half (i only saw one half) was still leaving a lot to be desired.
