Pre-Season

Sleeper – Matt Jarvis

Having tasted relegation with Wolves at the end of the 2011/12 campaign, Matt Jarvis was afforded the chance of a quick top-flight return with just a few days left of last summer’s transfer window. Costing West Ham a club record fee in the region of £10m, the winger was soon followed by the loan acquisition of Andy Carroll as Sam Allardyce looked to freshen up his front three in light of the Hammers’ promotion:

Initially, there was a degree of relative optimism that Jarvis – at 6.0 – could potentially rival Kevin Nolan as a genuine mid-price Fantasy contender in the Hammers midfield. Given that his final season at Molineux had harvested eight goals, six assists and 14 bonus points, for a respectable 142 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points, Jarvis’ delivery from the left flank looked tailor-made for Carroll’s aerial abilities, with plenty of assists anticipated.

By the time the season had come to an end, however, Jarvis had proved a bitter disappointment for Fantasy managers. Despite a security of starts which saw him make 29 first XI appearances (in addition to three games off the bench), he found the net just twice and also chipped in with just a couple of FPL assists, ending his first term at Upton Park on just 92 points in the FPL game – a full 57 points behind Nolan, and 50 points less than his tally for Wolves the previous year.

The Prospects

In all likelihood, Jarvis’ displays over the course of 2012/13 should see his price drop further across the Fantasy games. Given his minimal impact, there’d be little surprise if the former Wolves man slipped down to 5.5 in FPL but, while last term’s returns are undoubtedly far from persuasive, his home form towards the tail end of last term, which harvested a goal and four bonus points in his final couple of Upton Park appearances, suggests he may be worth monitoring.

Furthermore, the number of chances created last season indicates he was more than a little unlucky not to pick up a far greater number of assists. According to the Opta definition, Jarvis failed to supply a single assist for his Hammers team mates but, over the course of the campaign, made close to 50 “key passes” – a clear indication that he maintained a steady source of creativity from the flank. Indeed, Jarvis supplied 10 more goalscoring opportunities than Theo Walcott over 2012/13, for example, though thanks to his team mates’ superior finishing, the latter picked up 13 FPL assists, or 10 according to Opta.

While Carroll is currently back at parent club Liverpool, Allardyce has already admitted that securing the big forward’s future on a permanent basis is a “big priority”. The Geordie’s impact towards the end of the season also suggests he found his feet after a patchy settling-in period and, if he does indeed arrive, could bolster Jarvis’s potential next time out if he continues in the same vein. Allardyce has also been linked with Sevilla’s Alvaro Negredo as he looks to rectify a record that produced a mere 11 goals on the road all season – the worst away haul in the Premier League.

With Nolan set for an increase in cost after finishing the season with a flourish, it may well be that the Hammers skipper is priced out of our options in the mid-price bracket. Given that Mark Noble will remain the club’s spot-kick taker and offer us a budget midfield alternative, Jarvis is likely to stay firmly off Fantasy radars next time round. If he can maintain his creative endeavours, though, the winger will be optimistic of picking up more returns next time round and may be a real under the radar option as Allardyce looks to ensure his side avoid “second season syndrome” and improve upon last term’s tenth placed finish.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Do u guys think that the time of playing the wildcard has an effect on the total points in FPL?

I feel it does. I also feel the people who play the wildcard in the first half of the season have a greater advantage than who play it while the DGW's near the end of the season-

    1) When u play the wildcard in the first few gameweeks u get the chance to hop on to the bandwagons instantly. more than often it is seen that the majority of players who start the season well, end up to be the top 10-15 point earners that season.

    2) Those who save their wildcards for the end, have to either take hits or wait some more time to get the needed players at the start and end up missing some valuable points.

    3) Near the end of the season the guys having the wildcard have the luxury of scoring high in those DGW's.the guys who don't have the wildcard they also stuff their teams with DGW players taking hits.It doesn't always matter whether you got a good combination using your wildcard or not cause its a DGW and many players from a team can score high in those gamewks.so if you have one and not the other it wont hamper your rank that much. But when its in the start of a season only some players of a team score high.

So i feel wildcarding early and getting the top valued or form players early is the way to go.

I played mine GW3 and my team was awful by GW5 😉 , that was probably due to inexperience. I think having patience with the WC is very important. having one later on with all the DGWs is definitely useful

I played it week three and regretted it immensely.
I think the ideal wildcard time is about week 8.. so you have a better idea of starting xi's and proper form players as opposed to loading up on lucky cheaper players

I agree, I always say I'm going to save it and always give in and use it between gwk 4-7 to sort out my mess of a team. I'm a terrible starter. Get the wrong gwk1 team every season.

Congrats on being the subject of a hot topic btw...this thread can now be found in the hot topic column on the right hand side and by sorting by sticky comments first above.

I've always Wildcarded early but that is more out of impatience and being a shocking starter more than anything. I see the attraction of waiting for DGW's but if you plan right for the DGW's the difference between Wildcarders and those who used it earlier is usually 1-2 players or a 4 point hit or two. Guess it all depends on how you start the season. I'm already accepting the fact my WC will be gone by GW3.

I think your point 1 isn't necessarily true. it's just that last year oddly enough most of the bandwagons worked out. the year before I remember that many of the bandwagons failed. if you wc early and get a lot of failed bandwagons then your wc can hurt you quite a lot

2 is a valid point and they also miss out on TV.

3 is an interesting point but you also have to consider that with a wc you can load up on more dgwers and get more optimal ones. for example lets say you had no united strikers for some reason. to get rvp it could take 2-3 hits whereas getting hernadez could be done with say one hit. I know this is probably not relevant example but do you see my point?

yes TW, thats a good point(3).but on the other hand a player who didn't have a wildcard could have opted for P. Hernandez instead of Michu on the basis of price constraints. so he would have got the reward. What i want to say is if you play sensibly and keep up-to-date with the news of DGW's and injury, playing the wildcard in between 3/4th - 6/7th gameweek could be more profitable!

Having had one "proper" season at this game (sorry, I know some people hate it when people use this phrase/excuse), and having been a frequent visitor to this site throughout the season, I deduce that an early wildcard to build team value seems to be the best strategy.

Although, having said that, I'll still be saving my anytime wildcard for an emergency (or a monster DGW).

      Repost from last page...

Take advantage of DGW\Blank weeks is essential. Because there were so many DGW this past season, there appears to be a 150 pts difference in rank between a score in 2011/12 to 2013

      i.e.
      2200 Pts in 2011/12 received a rank of 4,800
      2200 Pts in 2012/13 received a rank of 13,000

I think the key thing is how you start your season. if you've started well there's no need to wc and you should save it for later in case your team becomes a wreck (injures, guys out of favor, etc) or for dgw's. however if you start poorly and pick the wrong players you should wc sooner rather than later

I always tried to hang on to my wildcard until it was absolutely necessary and I couldn't get 11 out, but the winter wildcard thing has screwed with that theory.

I'm still sticking with that though, imagine what a wildcard would do in a tight ML near the end of the season.

If you get off to a really good start though it may not be necessary to WC early. That might be the exception to your rule. Otherwise I agree that more often than not, wildcarding reasonably early (in the first 6 or so GW's) is the way to go.

My strategy was to take hits early to maximize tv and profit trading. Did well and got into OR 150. Used my wc during dgw33 and my rank tumbled to topb500 after that.

Last season an early WC was the best in hindsight. Whether that will be true next year, it's hard to say. I WCed in GW4 and it was a great decision for my team, partly because I brought I made some unlucky/bad signings early on and my team was poor.

I think it comes down to a lot of factors, including whether your team is decent from the beginning and whether the bandwagons will sustain form (hard to say).

I'm only planning my team for the first few GWs (with the exception maybe of cheap rotating defenders) and if it's fine, I'll hold onto my WC but I also won't be afraid to use it.

Very early wildcards, before players’ form for the current season has settled down, should not be necessary if the initial squad is a strong one. Kelvin Travers (the 2012-13 runner-up) had a very strong initial squad and did not play his main wildcard till GW24 but was ahead of Matt Martyniak (the 2012-13 champion) for most of the season. Matt included 6 DGW players in his initial squad and then played his wildcard in GW2 to replace 5 of them. So either approach can be successful.

All the talk is about big strikers joining e.g. Cavani, Higuain, Lewandowski. I think the budget strikers of last year that finished the season well are far more interesting, Rodriguez, Weimann/Agbonlahor, Mirallas.
If you had 1 'big hitter' striker and 2 budget(~£6m or less) it could allow for 3 ~£9m midfielders at the start of the season, which is normally hard to have.
It all depends on whether those type of players push on this season, and show the form of mid-price attackers bud keep their budget price.

I don't see there being 2 decent budget strikers next season..
Lambert should be 7 - 7.5, Benteke could be priced as high as 9.0.. Berbatov will probably be 7.5 and could be great value next year if Fulham improve.
But I don't see there being good options in the 6-6.5 bracket

You don't think JRod or Weimann could? They both had spells of about 10 GWs where they were in excellent form considering their price. What I'm saying is they're both young and could improve to be more consistent this year but keep similar prices to what they had last season.

Iago Aspas was directly involved in (scored or assisted) 19 of Celta Vigo's 37 goals in the 2012/13 La Liga season, this is pretty damn good considering he was in a relegation battle all season long, when he was at Celta Vigo with Michu he was regarded as a much better player than Michu, I believe he will have an explosive impact at Liverpool and depending on his price could be the cheap Liverpool coverage which is vital to accommodating Bale and RVP in your team, anyone else jumping on this stagnant bandwagon? If he's priced at 7.5M or under I certainly will 😀

He is a striker but I believe he'll replace Downing on the right hand side, he is left footed and going on the right inside forward doesn't necessarily mean he'll be worse off, Rodgers likes a rotating from 3 strikers and hasn't really expressed this at Liverpool yet 😀

Borini should only be a bit part bench player next season and I think he'll only play in the central striker role to begin with so he shouldn't threaten Aspas on the right, Aspas is one of these players who scores at the right time adn is really determined so I'd like to the Rodgers would keep him on alot, I think Aspas will be key to Liverpool next season won't be rotated, we'll have to see.

Not desperate at all. Great discussion topic

      For me I like:
      9m ish for gk
Two 5-6m defenders, three 4.5-4m ones ...watch out for too many 4m though, that extra 0.5 can give security of starts
Mids - Two big hitters, two good mid priced ones, one cheapie
Forwards - I big hitter, one good 7m ish one, one cheapie ...getting a Holt or a Carroll of a couple of years ago early on for peanuts is a great feeling.

I guess it depends who the big hitters are.

          If the two big hitters are Bale and Mata (12 and 10) and the big striker is RVP (13) then he'd be pretty close;

          4.5 4.5
          6 6 4.5 4.5 4
          12 10 6.5 6.5 5

Yep...say the two mids are over £10m and the forward is £14m. I've found that more than three big hitters across mid and attack is tricky.

I felt there was many 4.0 options at the back last season. To be perfectly honest I couldn't believe how many 4.0's were starters. Was certainly friendly on the budget at times.

not quite. this is my thinking

      keepers: 2 between 4.0 and 5.0 each
defenders: one 6.0, one 5-5.5, and three 4-4.5
mids: 2-3 big hitters, 1-2 mid priced, one bench fodder
strikers - rvp, one 8-10m player and one 6-7m player. though rvp + 2 7-10m players would be ideal but doubt we'll be able to afford that at the beginning with just 100m

one top goal keeper and the cheapest possible starting GK

      Agree with your defensive strategy

      Midfield 3 big 1 middle 1 small

      Strikers 2 big 1 small/medium.

I think you're on the right line with your suggestions, bit I would say you can't afford that.

A midfield with 2 big hitters, 1 mid value and two cheapie is more realistic.

      Nice sticky, Ron 😉

II'll likely go with 3 big mids and 3 big strikers. Somehow big strikers seem to be a better bet than big mids at the start of the season.

    Morning lads 🙂
I must say the new changes to the forum look great.
Concerning the u21's .. I've been thinking about potential lineups for the 3rd round of games and whether it's worth the WC,

England - Can't see Englands first XI changing too much, as they will want to win a game. Zaha, Ince, Dawson should start with maybe a few of the less vital players on the team dropping out to give the squad players tournament experience. Delfounso and Mcheachran might start.

Italy - Insigne is obviously out. I expect Destro to get a start, but at the same time Italy should start most of their strongest side to ensure they top the group. Some rotation up front is possible though as they seem to have a lot of options.

Norway - I expect Norway to roll out a full side
Israel - Altman to start and probably a few other fringe players

Spain - Spain have such depth they can afford to rest Isco. I expect Morata to start and Rodrigo to be dropped to the bench.. Can't see much defensive rotation. Muniain should get a game

Netherlands - De Jong, Maher, John etc should all start as they are playing for the groups top spot. I do think Jozefzoon might get a start though.

Germany - Stick with Holtby. Tempted to get Volland in for Insigne myself.. I don't think Germany will go out without a win and Russia really opened up to the Dutch last week. I'm really writing off Russia here but I'd go with 3 German players this game

Russia - Avoid.. you know it's bad for you

I brought Volland in for the last game. Pretty disappointing tbh.

I might keep Dzagoev for one more game. He has the quality to do something. His teammates don't look very good mind you.

Going to counter this post, to make for some discussion:

England - I can see alot of the less senior U21s playing as Stuart Pearce commented about looking to the future and the next tournament. They're out now so it makes sense. Therefore i can see a fair few changes. The likes of Chalobah, Butland, Zaha should start. Could see the likes of Dawson, Henderson etc not playing.

Italy - Agree with you that Destro should start. I can actually see alot of rotation in their side too. They have a pretty big squad, and the others won't get a chance after. Think Immobile/Verratti could be rested. I can see the defence being the usual, but changes in midfield/attack

Norway - Full side, with some of the senior players who came back from the internationals maybe starting. Likes of Nordtveit and King.

Spain - Definitely a bit of rotation here. I can see the ones on yellows getting rested, likes of Morata. De Gea should play though. Morata will probably start.

Netherlands - Think Fer will start, after 2 sub appearances. Might be a bit of rotation in defence. Nuytinck coming in for another CB. Can see De Jong getting rested too.

Germany - Holtby, nailed on always. Volland should start as they don't have many other options. That said, not sure any of their players are worth getting in with them being out.

It didn't even cross my mind that Dawson might not start if I'm honest.. I don't see him being dropped myself but it's entirely possible.
Destro does deserve a chance, and while I can see a bit of rotation 7/8 of their starting lineup should be present.
Morata and Muniain are the Spanish guys I'm looking at this week, these guys should really have a chance at breaking in as Spain haven't offered much penetration. Interesting to see how they fare against the Netherlands
I just think they'll put 3 or 4 past Russia and its worth cashing in on. I'll probably just go Volland and Holtby mysel

HAHA, I know what you mean although it's completely redundant doing so because the team you'll pick on the final day before the season start will look nothing like your first 30 drafts.

For me, definitely. He'd play similar role to what RVP did at Arsenal, Arsenal have so many creative players but not really any goalscorers. Higuain is a natural goalscorer and would mop up all Arsenal's FPL points in my opinion

Can't see RVP being 14M. He scored less points this season than he did at Arsenal the year before.
Also think Higuain might be less than 11M after Podolski and Giroud came in at 8.5 and 9.

you can't compare Giroud and Poldy to Higuain

Higuain is proved striker and brilliant finissher

those 2 are anywhere near close to him

to be fair to Poldy he dont even play as classic striker so i can't hardly compare Higuan with him

His price will be around 10M i recon

I think all new players to the Premier League are a bit of a risk. I'd rather have a wait and see on them.
Stick with the tried and trusted big hitters early on.
Maybe a few cheap new players for an early punt.

We have ten hot topics in the box at a time....and they will change and be updated throughout the day. What we'll do though is keep any hot topics as 'sticky' so they can still be accessed in the search option above.

The aim with hot topics is to keep it news worthy and flag up latest discussion points. New fixture list for example, key signing for a team, that kind of thing as the pre season and season develops.

Congrats on being stickied btw. That was me...in hindsight similar would get a hot topic title as well.

He's doing his best to move and to be honest as a Liverpool fan I don't blame him, yes we've backed him but the press hate him and he's human, anybody in their right mind would want to get away from them.

Liverpool are going to say that they wont sell because then they'll get a higher transfer fee.

IMO anything above £45Mil we should take it.
