Pre-Season

Sleeper – Charlie Adam

His debut season in the Premier League will forever live in Fantasy football folklore but ever since that 2010/11 campaign with Blackpool, it’s been all downhill for Charlie Adam. Back then, as the creative hub of Ian Holloway’s promoted side, Adam proved a cut-price phenomenon – with spot-kick and set-piece duties boosting his appeal, the Scot racked up 12 goals, nine assists and 45 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) bonus points for a total of 192 points:

Signed by Liverpool after the Tangerines suffered the ignominy of relegation, Adam was then snapped up by Stoke last summer after failing to settle at Anfield. Hopes were relatively high for the Scot’s Fantasy prospects, with his delivery from free-kicks and corners seeming the ideal aerial fodder for the likes of Robert Huth, Ryan Shawcross and Peter Crouch. It’s fair to say it hasn’t quite turned out that way, though – Tony Pulis’ tactics afforded him little license to prosper as a Fantasy force – indeed, towards the end of last term, Adam was fielded as a right winger for the Potters.

Starting only 22 league matches in 2012/13 – with five appearances also off the bench – Adam failed to establish himself as a regular and managed 90 minutes on just five occasions; all too often, he was the victim of his former manager’s tactical tweaks midway through the second-half of matches. Despite producing attacking returns in each of his last three appearances, then, Adam registered just three goals, six assists and five bonus points for a total of 85 points in Pulis’ last term in charge at the Britannia.

The Prospects

With Mark Hughes now installed as the new man in charge at the Britannia, Adam’s prospects suddenly look a little more enticing for the campaign ahead. The Welshman is desperate to address the dire attacking record which saw the Potters score just 34 times last season – the second worst record in the Premier League – and, in addition to restructuring his backroom team, has released seven players as part of a summer clear-out.

The decision to let go long-throw specialist Rory Delap seems somewhat symbolic as Hughes looks to freshen up his options and bring about a more expansive style of play. Crucially, as far as Fantasy managers are concerned, however, the Welshman has talked up Adam as a key component of his side for 2013/14.

“I’m looking forward to working with Charlie day in day out and it will be an exciting time. We’ll get to know each other on a number of levels. I know his quality and he can affect a game in all manner of ways by the strength of his ability. It’s about getting the best out of him and finding the best position for him to be most effective.”

Certainly, for all their work-rate and physical endeavour under Pulis, Stoke severely lacked in creativity. Adam’s six assists was joint-top for the club last term despite the fact he played just 1,758 minutes – having provided a total of 20 assists in his first two seasons in the top-flight, though, his potential for teeing up team mates is obvious. Likely to be installed in the centre of the Potters midfield, Adam’s eye for a killer pass and dead-ball ability may see him once again arrive on our radars – corners and free-kicks look likely, while Fantasy managers will be hoping that Jon Walters’ patchy spot-kick record may persuade Hughes to hand the Scot penalties, too.

Price-wise, Adam looks set to drop across the Fantasy games after the previous term’s disappointment. Initially costing 7.0 in FPL last summer, a slip to 6.5 or even 6.0 will be anticipated – granted, that’s a little too expensive for our cheap fifth midfielder spot but if Hughes can revitalise Adam’s playmaking potential after his recent toils under Pulis, it’s a cost kind enough to consider the Scot as a mid-price option.

I have seen people suggesting that maxing out on one team in the U21 final is the way to go. But surely this only works if the match turns out to be heroically one sided with a team winning without conceding.

In defence, it may make sense to only pick one team who you expect to win the match, although your neglecting the possibility of the opposition scoring from a set piece.

In attack, things are very different. Thinking Italy will win, is a very different concept to expecting every attacking player to share the points. The same players will still gobble up all the points for the winning team. Additionally, why is it assumed that the losing team will not have any high scoring players?

Because Spain are better than italy. I was originally going to go with 4 spain defs (inc de gea) and 2 italy as I think it'll be a tight game, but opting for an extra spain mid and one italy def. I see another spain shut out and likely 1-0 win so playing the odds as to who'll pop up with the attacking points for Spain.

It is assumed that the losing team will not have any high scoring players because of the impressive defensive record of both teams. 1 goal conceded between them in 8 games doesn't lead you to think it will be a high scoring game.

Unless it goes to pens after 0-0 the losing team won't have any CS and I don't see Italy putting many past Spain. Even if they were to score 1 you would favour Insigne to get it as he is on set pieces and their most creative players. 9 players max from one team so you pick Insigne as one of your Italians.

If you honestly believe that there will only be one goal then surely it makes no sense to own more than one striker. There will only be attacking points for two players, possibly only one, and thus CS's pts will make up the majority of your score.

How are you supposed to know which striker scores the goal?

And 2-0 is a low scoring game so Isco(c), Thiago, Morata could score nicely with that scoreline.

Re those Liverpool 'fixtures'. Surely they're fake, would Liverpool v Everton really be on a Saturday at 3? Normally an early kick-off for tv isn't it.

          Tinkerman is correct.

The fixtures are announced in terms of when they will take place (as in gameweeks). Then Sky and police forces, etc, will start coming into the mix and choosing what times they should actually be.

          3pm Saturday is just standard.

Yup, Black Knights pointed this out not long back http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2013/06/18/sleeper-charlie-adam/?hc_page=3#hc_comment_4981851

Don't think anyone had spotted it before then though - funny how these things get forgotten/overlooked!

One of those player/club combinations that you never remember. Robbie Keane/Liverpool is another one!

Ah I'll always remember his goal against Arsenal http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iSm5oubwP1g Hoofed up there yeah but the technique was unreal. Rising up on the bounce at speed , coming over his shoulder and still kept in down on target. Quality

I was surprised it took until page 3 to get mentioned, I had to wiki him to check it wasn't a bad dream I had.

Yaya Sanogo transfer been confirmed by Arsenal. He is only 20 years old, and will probably be shipped out on loan. However watching a few videos he reminds me of a Patrick Vieira and Nwankwo Kanu love child 😀

I got the Windows Phone app. It was £1.50 and so, so bad. I now have an iPhone but I won't bother with the app.

There's a free one called FFM that looks like it might be a bit better.

Get the unofficial one, its logo is red and light blue with a football at the bottom. It's a million times better
