Great Expectations

Great Expectations – Kevin Mirallas

Snapped up from Olympiakos towards the end of last year’s summer transfer window, Kevin Mirallas arrived at Everton on the back of an eye-catching campaign. With his final season in Greece harvesting 20 goals from 25 league games, the Belgian looked a canny acquisition by David Moyes but a role on the Toffees right flank, combined with an ongoing hamstring complaint, limited his Fantasy potential.

His classification as a forward in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game hardly helped either. While Marouane Fellaini benefitted from his advanced central berth behind a lone forward, Mirallas suffered as a reverse out of position performer – despite being stuck on the wing in Moyes’ preferred 4-4-1-1 system, he chipped in with six goals, five assists and 13 bonus points from 24 starts. With Moyes taking up the reins at Manchester United, however, the installation of Roberto Martinez to the Goodison hotseat may be set to promote Mirallas as a significant Fantasy performer for the season ahead.

Key Factors

  • Martinez’s penchant for a 3-4-3 formation seems tailor-made for Mirallas. With the former Wigan boss expected to field Seamus Coleman on the right of the midfield four, the Belgian looks likely to be shifted further forward, affording him greater license to thrive as an attacking prospect. While such a system would diminish Fellaini’s potential, with a move to central midfield on the cards, Mirallas should rise in the Fantasy pecking order under Martinez’s guidance.

  • Last season’s spot on the flank should now benefit Mirallas. A midfield classification across the Fantasy games may apply, affording us a real out of position prospect with a keen eye for goal. Price-wise, his debut campaign suggests a drop from last term’s initial 7.5 price tag could be on offer – Fellaini and Steven Pienaar both started the previous campaign at 6.5 and, given that Mirallas ultimately returned a total of 96 points, such a cost would be a fair reflection of his contribution last time out.

  • The hamstring issue which hampered his game time now finally seem to be behind him. Mirallas limped out of the Gameweek 11 clash with Sunderland after less than half an hour and lasted just 45 minutes of the Gameweek 16 home match with Tottenham before succumbing to the same problem. Moyes courted caution with the problem, easing him back into the Toffees first-team, but a fully-fit Mirallas started each of his side’s last 11 league games and proved an increasingly instrumental figure for the Merseysiders.

  • Further analysis of Mirallas’ form highlights a definite upturn in performance over those final few months of the season. Devoid of injury and finally accustomed to the rigours of the Premier League, he produced five goals, an assist and 13 bonus points over those final 11 fixtures, compared to a single goal and four assists across his first 16 appearances. Even if – as some suspect – Martinez begins with last season’s formation until the players get to grips with his tactics, Mirallas’ potential still looks to be strong.

  • The opening fixture list has been relatively kind to Martinez’s troops. Three of their first four home games hold plenty appeal (WBA, NEW, HUL) and with trips to Norwich and Cardiff also on their agenda, Everton face just two of last season’s top eight in the first eight Gameweeks, with a home game against Chelsea and visit to City in Gameweeks 4 and 7 respectively.

No Southampton will kick on I reckon... In fact I think both WH and the Saint's be a fair distance away from the drop. Your Stoke's/Sunderland's and then Fulham and Newcastle are the teams who will be close to the drop (with the 3 promoted team's)

I think Clarke will have a bit of ss but WB won't go down.

Well Reading would have, but the first season got to them anyway.

Given the choice I would say that it has to be Southampton but even then I am not sure they will. Although how long can Lambert carry them? Just look at Grant Holt, a meagre pretence of a prem striker now.

Is it likely that FPL consider the potential formation switch at Everton and decide to keep Coleman as a midfielder and Mirallas as a forward.

If Coleman plays on the right of a midfield four he is a midfielder and Mirallas playing on the right of a front three a forward.

Mirallas maybe, but I think as Coleman played as a defender all last season he should be reclassified. They can't really second guess Martinez's tactics. Plus Wigan's wingbacks are usually classified as defenders.

      I do...

Up until about 2 years ago he was really average, didn't score or really do anything. He nearly left Lyon as well. Since then he has scored well, no doubt. But he won't cut it in the English game, he wasn't rated as well as gervinho or chamakh when they played in Ligue 1 and quite rightly.

When he was a st.etienne he was scoring 1 in 4 and for lyon it's more like 1in 3.
I mean he may cut it at somewhere like Newcastle/Swansea but they could find better players, who are younger and will have cheaper wages.

So yer, I don't think he's that good, the goals he scores in the champions league are the cause that some people think he's half decent.

      Hi Jinswick!

"Here’s a brief summary of what HomeCrowd means to the average Fantasy Football Scout visitor…

In terms of what you’ll see and experience, this should hopefully be business as usual with a few more bells and whistles.

You can now vote for comments and this will give a rating boost or penalty to the comment, the weighting of which depends on your reputation which is maintained behind the scenes. You earn reputation by earning votes and generally posting good stuff that gets recognition from the community and us contributors and moderators.

So voting adds rating and you can now sort an entire thread of comments by that rating. This allows you to quickly catch up on the days most valuable, significant, informative or perhaps entertaining discussions.

You can also go straight to the key stuff by viewing Hot Topics. You’ll see a new tab on the recent comments widget – click this and you’ll view the last ten Hot Topics. These are discussions singled out by mods and staff members because we feel there’s value in reading them or perhaps they include information that we want visitors to take in.

You can also view another user’s profile and your own profile by clicking a username or gravatar.

For now, that’s all that you’ll notice that’s different, aside from a few badges and the general design changes."

It's the new comment system. Means we can draw out posts that are interesting and make them a hot topic or a sticky. People can then use the widget at the side or search option above to find them. Helps make it easier to find the good posts. You can also vote for posts you like.., and search by comment rating as well.

Neutral supporter here. Was discussing this with my mate the other day. I think United should either keep him and use him as CF, or sell him for a high price. None of this CM crap.

In all fairness, apart from the stick Rooney gets, he is probably one of the best CFs in the world. Not many others can play as well in that position as him. So if you get rid of a world class CF you must be able to bring someone in of equal or higher quality, and I'm not so sure there is many others.

Would make sense considering they have other stars like Hernandez on the bench, but as for an all-round quality player and CF I dont think the likes of Kagawa or Thiago would substitute...

      Hard to say

RVP is clearly the number one at CF. Hernandez may be happy to warm the bench but Rooney isn't, and given his need to play games to maintain fitness it's not really an option for him or Moyes anyway.

So unless Moyes intends to play 2 out and out CFs, surely this means he has to move on?

Alas, there has been no noon inspection because the rain returned, and has actually got heavier in the last few minutes. The city skyline is shrouded in cloud - always a good measure of the weather in these parts - and I'd say this is as bleak as it's been today....which has persuaded the umpires to call an early lunch - at 1230. We're informed there will be a pitch inspection after that - "when conditions permit". Don't hold your breath.

Is anyone considering not getting RVP. I mean most likely he will be coming in at 14m and that imo is just asking for too much. Providing Suarez stays, and Aguero stays fit I think RVP will find it very hard to get most goals this season. His age, no Fergie, and his horrible starting fixtures could be too many factors to gamble so much for money on

I won't be. Not with Bale being money now too. There's too many question marks over RvP for him to be worth even 13m in my opinion. What if Hernandez gets game time? What if Moyes decides Rooney will be the focal point of the attack? He's another year older, is historically injury prone. I also feel he rode his luck in the 2nd half of last season. Compare him to previous 13m plus players - the likes of Ronaldo and Henry. He comes up very short. No RvP for me.

I don't agree with a lot of that. I'd be very surprised if he isn't right up there at the end. He has been top goal scorer for the last two years and best fpl player by some distance. I may not get him because of price and that is it. If Chelsea had no dgw I would probably get him

I don't doubt his quality. And I think he could be up there come the end of the season. It's just that at 13m I want to know he's going to be up there. I can get the same degree of comfort of points, psychologically, from Aguero for a few mil less. If he were similarly priced I'd go for him so I guess the price is what's really Holding me back.

It's tough - my natural instinct is to say there'll be better value elsewhere, but if I ask myself would I rather have say:

      A) RVP + Jarvis
      B) Aguero + Kagawa

It seems hard to give RVP up . . . You've got to be really confident in the player you're spending the extra 3m or so on.

They both hog penalties, free-kicks & corners. Bale more so.

They were both dominant as far as their teams attack was concerned last season. Bale more so.

Bale is improving whilst RVP is 30+

Bale ended the season in stunning form RVP dipped in second half relying on offside goals etc.

In short, I don't understand your conclusion.

Who can score other than RVP? Well last season he scored 26 out of 86 goals – about 30%

Bale scored 21 out of 66 for Spurs – about 32%

      You were saying?

Add to this if Bale plays OOP all season long he will definitely outscore RVP on last years form.

And will be cheaper and not take up a valuable striker spot.

When Spurs win 1-0 and bale is OOP its fantasy heaven. No assist needed Bale(c) 5 +3BP +3

          =22 points

RVP 4 + 2 +3 = 18 pts (he will need an assist every week and a goal to outscore Bale)

Can it get any simpler than PPG? This season it was:

              RVP – 6.9

              Bale – 7.5

And Bale is young and improving, RVP is not.

Now, now, let's not let that ruin the story... 😀

It was 15-9 in favour of RVP.

So technically (not counting the 9 goals scored when Bale didn't play – not sure when the united goals were scored when RVP was on the bench)

          RVP – 41/86 = 48%

          Bale – 30/57 = 53%

That wasn't what you said. He scored 5 less goals than RVP this season and gets an extra point for each of them. Add to that the 5 extra appearances RVP made...

Not to mention the +/- 10 points Bale will get for CSs...

Even Man Utd do better after Xmas.

Some teams take time to play the way the new manager wants. I guess the friendlies are a good start.

Yeah I totally accept the point about the new manager, I was just wondering in general how linked the manager is to the time a team takes to pick up form or if it's something that can just be intrinsic to a club.

Mid season it seems to get the players to lift but starting a new season can go either way. The Everton players have been used to Moyes for years. Same could occur with Man Utd. Plenty here have written them off already.
