Scout Report – Andre Schurrle

Jose Mourinho kick-started his summer spending spree earlier today with the signing of Andre Schurrle from German outfit Bayer Leverkusen. The 22-year-old arrives at Stamford Bridge for a fee reportedly in the region of £18m and is believed to have been a long-term target of the west London outfit:

Negotiations had been at an advanced stage prior to Mourinho’s reinstallation and, after the Portuguese manager green lit the deal, Chelsea confirmed they had reached an agreement for Schurrle’s transfer earlier this month. Having passed a medical and signed on the dotted line, Schurrle admitted he’s delighted to be given the chance to play under The Special One:

“I’m really looking forward to working with him. I got to know him at Michael Ballack’s testimonial a few weeks ago where we talked a little bit. He gave me advice on where to live and also explained what he expects from me. He’s a very good person with a big personality; he’s a great manager so it’s an absolute honour for me to now be one of his players.”

The History

Schurrle joined Bundesliga side Mainz O5 as a youngster and was fielded in their youth set-up for three years before making his first-team debut at the age of 18 in August 2009. His impact was immediate and, having notched five goals and a pair of assist in 33 appearances, he caught the eye of Leverkusen – in September 2010, Schurrle agreed to join the club for the start of the following campaign but not before racking up 15 goals and four assists in 33 matches, breaking the club’s previous record for goals scored in a single Bundesliga season.

His first term at Leverkusen proved more of a settling-in period for Schurrle as he produced seven goals and four assists over 31 league fixtures but last season he stepped up in performance. Fielded as an inverted winger on the left of a front three, he delivered 11 goals and seven assists from 34 matches, helping his side to third spot in the Bundesliga behind Champions League finalists Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund. Schurrle has represented his country on 10 occasions at youth level, scoring seven times, and has also produced seven goals from 24 appearances for the senior side.

The Prospects

From a Fantasy perspective, the German’s arrival merely compounds the number of midfield options already on offer at the Bridge. Juan Mata and Eden Hazard finished in the top five Fantasy Premier League (FPL) midfield standings with 212 points and 190 points respectively, Oscar ended the season particularly strong after netting in three of his last five starts, while Frank Lampard was the club’s top scorer after finding the net on 15 occasions.

If Mourinho maintains the 4-2-3-1 formation he utilised in Madrid, Schurrle will add to the competition for the three spaces in the attacking midfield three – with Kevin De Bruyne having already been given assurances he will be part of next term’s squad and the likes of Victor Moses also offering options, there’s no shortage of possibilities to potentially frustrate Fantasy managers. With Mata and Hazard apparently nailed on, the new boy may well battle it out with Oscar for the remaining slot, though the two have contrasting styles – while the Brazilian’s keen eye for a pass means he could also be fielded as a deep-lying playmaker, Schurrle is more pacy and direct and, standing at six foot, even offers an alternative up top; a position he’s been utilised in for the German national side on occasion.

Schurrle can be a frustrating player at times, though. Cutting inside onto his favoured right foot, his penchant for speculative long range efforts has led to accusations of selfishness, with more of his shots finding the stands than the back of the net – while his speed and work-rate will be advantageous within Mourinho’s system, the new boy may need to subscribe to the team ethic in order to thrive. Given that Mata is expected to keep the central, playmaking role – similar to Mesut Ozil at Real – Hazard’s displays on the left suggest Schurrle may have to move to the opposite flank in order to prosper; a role the German is unaccustomed to, though he admitted earlier today:

“In attack I can play in every position, but I think wide on the left is my best position because I can cut inside and score goals with my right foot, which I hope to be able to do here, but I am confident playing anywhere offensively.”

Bearing in mind that he featured up front for Bayer, Schurrle’s classification across the Fantasy games remains up for debate, though the fact that Eden Hazard was also utilised on the front left of a 4-3-3 in his final season at Lille yet was listed as a midfielder perhaps hints at what’s to come. Certainly, the performances of Mata and Hazard in 2012/13 are set to elevate the duo’s prices; a rise to somewhere in the region of 10.5 to 11.0 in the FPL wouldn’t surprise, considering only two forwards – Robin Van Persie and Luis Suarez – managed to outscore the pair last time round. The new boy’s cost will be relatively cheaper, then, with 8.5 to 9.5 perhaps on the cards, though a possible classification as a striker, however unlikely, would almost certainly rule him out of consideration.

In a situation similar to last season, Chelsea’s European Super Cup duties against Bayern Munich in late August may afford us a double Gameweek 1 to get the season underway. Though the Premier League has yet to confirm this, it would see Mourinho’s men welcome Hull and Villa to the Bridge and bring huge interest their way, with major investment looking essential to getting our seasons off to a flier. Pre-season should afford us time to assess Mourinho’s intentions, though for all his undoubted talents, Schurrle will need to convince early on to oust the likes of Mata, Hazard and even Lampard from the majority of initial Fantasy line-ups if, as expected, the double Gameweek drops on to the schedule.

Even though they're doing well in the confeds, I'm thinking spain might come unstuck in south america and brazil & argentina will do well. Time for messi to step it up on the international stage possibly.

England hard to tell with us in transition. Obviously signs arent good right now but maaayybe the young players will have come on then, wilshire (fit?), ox, studge, jones, sterling etc..

winners, spain. just too bloody good with the tiki-taki
"best team who didn't win": germany
england, to qualify and at most quarter finals.
surprise team, a team from africa - deliberately vague as they'll be several who qualify and one should go to the qf before being knocked out by a big gun. i don't know enough about african teams to say which one though
messi - will do well but knocked out in qf/sf and people will say its not his fault his teammates aren't as good as he is.

      my two cents...

Germany- outplayed Spain in Europe (cl) and I think they'll repeat this, gotze and reus and muller looking good.
Quarter finals on penalties to Germany
Japan- good young side with a few great players
Destroy little teams but nullified as Argentina crash out to brazil in the semis

Spain - Will be surprised if they get beat at the tournament.
Second-Round - If they get drawn against a half-decent team then they could be in trouble.
Colombia - Some decent players in there, chance of a good run.
Messi - Never seems to step-up, but wouldn't bet against him for the golden boot.

All this talk about Chelsea having too many attacking midfielders is all nonsense... A team playing 60+ matches every season needs a backup in each position... Schurrle, Moses and De Bryne are perfect cover for Hazard, Mata and Oscar... Lampard, Ramires, Essien and Luiz can fight for the defensive midfield places... Mikel can leave for Galatasaray who he claims are interested in him...

pretty much this, it makes picking a Chelsea mid very hard as even Jose will have to rotate when his team could play 60 games. Hazard for GW1 then out for Theo.Kagawa

there's been plenty of talk of Jose only playing 2 of the 3 amigos at once anyway with his tendency for a solid team, so having another 3 attack mids isn't helpful!

I think Mourinho can manage them well... Hazard, Mata will surely be nailed on for PL games and Schurrle, Moses and De Bryne will play most initial cup games... Although if Cavani or another big name doesn't sign, Schurrle might even play striker some games...

mikel has distanced himself from the comments and i think we need the squad depth. last year our bench was benayoun, moses, marin.

utds was rooney, kagawa, scholes, chicharito.

this year bench could be schurrle, KDB, Lukaku, Essien, Lamps. they'll all play. i think mou won't rotate the defence, much, but the attacking options could cause a few upset posts come saturday morning.

With the little debate about what should be posted from twitter on the previous page - could we have some sort of agreed list of sources that are reliable - BBC and Newspaper Journalists - particularly local journos I find useful. Could then agree to only post links from these source or at least put a disclaimer that the person isn't a normal source of information?

Just a suggestion. Might also help anybody starting to use twitter as it took me bloody ages (and having to ask Demi for a few useful people to follow)

Yeah, I believe that, that's what happens with transfers these days, unofficial representatives see if a player is interested in a move before even making an official approach and then they decide on sketchy drafts of the personal terms.

nah don't think so everything coming out from pool leads me to believe they wont sell at all unless an offer over 50mil. Pool don't need to sell or the money they've learned their lesson from the Carroll saga. Any player they go after will automatically make the team want the dosh. If Suarez leaves it will be next yr so Pool will able to bring in a striker before selling him.

If they've learned from the Carroll saga then explain to me the logic of paying £20m+ for an Armenian international who's scored a nice few goals for the dominant team in the Ukrainian league but feck all in Champions League. That's Ukraine as in U Ukraine not U K. It's not a 24 year old Shevchenko they're after. He's good but not worth £20m +

he's worth more than 20 if it wasnt for the clause they'll want as much as citys signing.

who cares if he's armenian doesnt stop him from being a good player.

CL is a tournament so he has less of a chance scoring also he doesnt always play up front in that competition

He's not worth more than 20. Not saying he's bad, not worth 20m. Obviously if he was a German or Spanush international I'd expect more from him than if he was Armenian. Shaktar are the most dominant team of any domestic European league with plenty of quality v poor opposition. You'd expect any half decent attacking mid to score plenty of goals against poor opponents. Aspas for less than 8m in a poor team in a much higher standard league scored a nice few goals, can play out wide, lone striker, attacking mid. I hope Mkhitaryan proves his price tag cos for now I don't see it.

Mourinho tactically plays different to his first time as Chelsea manager then how he plays now he's more open in his play and this Chelsea's defense is ageing and isnt as reliable and strong as it was back then.

I hope that's not real. Can anyone actually be that stupid?

At least the Toon fan who had Andy Cole tattooed was doing it with a player actually at the club at the time...even if he did leave 2 days later.

I've been mulling over In Tommy We Trust's interesting 5 team rotation. A great piece of work.

The part that concerned me though was the transfers it needs. I'm not sure I can be disciplined enough to have two FTs at GW8 and execute those transfers.

I wondered what the best 5 team rotation until GW19 that needed no change of teams would look like.

Obviously it won't be as good as Tommy's but perhaps it's more usable in the heat of a season when trying to build value in the attacking end of the pitch.

I've been crunching the numbers in Excel based on difficulty of each match faced by the teams to keep a clean sheet. This includes some gut feelings such as SOT are actually pretty decent at defending away from home now with their style of play, vs WHM who under Big Sam will never be sophisticated enough to be anything but a home team.

Anyway this is what I end up with. The only time big teams are faced at home, and not too many of them (but GW8 looks a bastard). But there again in that part of the season it can work out well to play the big boys at home.

Not sure how I feel about this yet. So feel free to tell me 🙂

    Teams to Rotate:
    AVL / NEW / SOT / SWA / WHM

    GW1: wba MUN CAR
    GW2: LIV WHM SUN
    GW3: FUL nor STO
    GW4: avl WHM LIV
    GW5: nor HUL cpl
    GW6: CPL ARS hul
    GW7: hul car SWA
    GW8: TOT LIV SUN (MCI)
    GW9: EVE FUL WHM
    GW10: sto car AVL
    GW11: CAR HUL STO
    GW12: wba NOR ful
    GW13: SUN WBA FUL
    GW14: AVL NEW cpl
    GW15: ful MCI HUL
    GW16: SOT nor SUN

Marko Marin must have the right hump after this Schürrle news. Either that or Roman has a severe case of déjà vu. Chelsea looking somewhat stacked for CAMs and wing forwards now.

    Schürrle, Mata, Hazard

    Marin, Oscar, de Bruyne

    Moses, Lampard, Benayoun

    Piazón, McEachran, Kakuta

That's before you even consider the strikers to play up top: Torres, Ba, Cavani (?), Lukaku

As a Jose signing I would think that Schürrle has a decent starting chance - could certainly play the Malouda type role from Mourinho's previous arrival. Hazard and Mata are only likely to get better though - that would be my 3 to play off a striker.

I still don't feel they have addressed the base of midfield yet though. Maybe Romeu will be fit, but there is nobody of the class of Alonso for Jose to call on. Luiz has a chance at it, but you'd want some discipline alongside him and I don't think Ramires, Lampard, Mikel can offer it.

Luiz could be a good call, but is he disciplined to hold in the same way Makele did with all that success?

          What about at the back?

How do you see them starting?

JT reinstated? Ivan at right back?

Again, I don't think he will trust Luiz at centre back.

I'd like to jump in here. I don't think JT will exactly be reinstated, but he'll surely see more game time than under Rafa. Cole and Ivanovic, I think, would be the most nailed on defenders in our squad. Maybe Azpilicueta has a chance too, and as for Luiz, he's definitely not playing as a CB.

Yes - I recon Ivanovic could be the man again (at RB).
Cole at LB and Terry/Cahill in defence.

Wouldn't be surprised to see a classy defender arrive though - Bruma is good, but might still be a bit early for him.

This describes his progress well: http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/blog/2012/oct/22/henrik-mkhitaryan-shakhtar-donetsk

I remember seeing him as a part time DM in UCL fantasy football and one to avoid, but his move forward to play off the striker was a real blossoming. Goal spree was a bit of a fluke this year though I'd say - doubt he'll repeat those figures.

Shakhtar team is an odd set up though (sucha strong base, yet so fluid up top) - will be hard for Rodgers to replicate those conditions for him at Anfield, and equally hard for him to adapt when things are different.

Wow, this is fun. Not sure I've ever seen either player on YouTube.

Mkhitaryan is clearly a good player and is likely to do well if he end up at Liverpool. I'm not convinced he would live up to a 20m price tag, but he certainly has the potential to. I'd be as shocked if he matches his goal ratio from last season as I would if he nailed down a spot on the right wing.

The Kplank comments were a joke. He has talent and was a live wire at youth level, but if he hasn't tested himself outside Dnipropetrovsk, he can't really be compared.

I may not be a Liverpool expert, but then neither of these are Liverpool players. Yet.

not really his career to date is very similar to Gerrard he use to get moved around in alot of positions before finally playing cm

not really they play the same as them 1 striker up top 2 wide. he'll play out wide on the right for pool.

Great player.. reminds me of Iniesta a little with a lot more goalscoring threat - Though obviously not as good.
He deserves a better side with Champions League football.. great signing if it goes through.

Reina is staying Rodgers said this aswell as Reina himself, but if he does move it will only be for Barca. so there's no rush from Barca to complete this move unless Valdes has changed his mind and is going now.

Tevez looks like it since that deal suits Juve they don't have alot of money but will get a 20mil player on the cheap.

Yeah I do see a lot of bias in the team selection. 8 Welsh the last day.. Obviously the Welsh players deserve their spots for the most part but I think both Youngs and Murray would be better options at scrum half

I've never been a fan of Phillips, but against Geina anyone would look average.

I'm not saying this as I am Welsh, but I envisaged 8 for the the test team.

Bowe would have replaced Cuthbert if fit, Roberts over Davies. But if dont see any others, Gethin would have fought out loose head with Healy. Close call that.

I think Heaslip & Faletau is another close call. Also, hibbert v Youngs either way at hooker, Youngs was very good last weekend so he deserves his spot...

Ah I don't particularly mind Phillips, he's a good physical presence over the other options.. he just doesn't have the incisive passing of Murray or Youngs.
Yeah Heaslip / Faleteu is a toss up for me
Strange how O'Brien didn't make the bench.. could have had a great impact in the last 20 minutes

think Reina will stay this season, Migs has no chance for Belguim no1 spot with Chelsea's keeper playing the way he is anyway. Migs is looking long term with this deal as you guys have said he's a good pro

Mignolet to liverpool might prove decent value for money in FPL as I think reina will still be a LFC player by the time the price list is released. So with reina expected to be around 6 again, Mignolet could be around 5.5ish

Reina may be going next season to Barca once Valdes contract ends. Competition is good a while back we had 2 brilliant english keepers competing.

9 mil is mince for pool, wages and legnth of contract is what stops us signing some players not transfer fees.

If we don't sell him not we'll get hardly anything for him.

9 mil is a lot at the moment whilst we're re building and whilst we're trying to save for a stadium. I rate Reina but he has to go now before we get the Armenian.

Got to give the kid time. We all know he isn't LFC quality, but there a few players at our club who aren't. Can't lose money on yet another player. Think Rodgers will keep him. A player can only get better playing next to Gerrard.

I can't see him getting much game time though tbh. He's a try hard and he'll do a job but not sure he'll be anything more than a stop gap.

Lol "Liverpool quality" and "better quality in that position compared to our rivals"

Liverpool quality is top 8 outside top 5 and your rivals are all the mid table teams. I think Allen is easily good enough for Liverpool's level.

It's easy to be a good passer statistically if you're only making short sideward passes.

for me it isnt about him being a bad player but if playing he has to play in Gerrard pos and that aint happening otherwise he's too weak in that pos for in the epl in europe i think he'll find it easier

he loses possesion far too much to play there and is too weak

That'd be job done. Keep hold of Suarez too, got a feeling we will keep him. Have to be looking at top 4 next season.

        -------------------Mignolet--------------

        -----Johnson---Papa----Agger----Enrique---

        --------Gerrard-----------------Lucas-------

        -----Mkhitaryan----Suarez----Coutinho

        ----------------Sturridge--------

Reina? Toure Hendo, Allen, Aspas, Alberto, Sterling and Borini on the bench. Would say only both Manchester clubs + Chelsea have a better squad, on paper anyway.

Mkhitaryan would be a waste on the wing. Suarez would be better there but in all honesty if Suarez stays he'd be better off as our main striker than Sturridge.

what about Arsenal and Spurs, they have some good players, and if they both sign a decent striker, they will still be ahead of pool. Don't get your hopes up, you can't keep relying on an aging player named Gerrard. You need to find a replacement for him and move on.

As a huge LFC fan - its good to see a few signings but have any of them really improved our chances of a top 4 finish? three squad players and Aspas who may push Downing outta the team albeit he had a decent few months.

We still need two big players to really impact and build on the impression Coutinho made last season and try to get the Club really pushing.

Fact is we not got the Papa & Mik deals done - so cant rest on that.

Reina will be number 1 keeper, as unlikely to move on. Plus BR will not play those 4 attackers in that formation.

Realistically - Suarez is going be leaving,so BR needs to get these top class players in instead of squad fillers ASAP.

its not even the 1st of july calm down the first 2 are likely going to be our final deals and take the rest of the window to get done.

Suarez goes if we recieve over 50 if not he aint going anywhere and we'll have a replacement lined up anyway. if anyone comes in for suarez late dont think we'll sell

I agree with you a bit, I think Aspas and Mignolet are great signings and they'll add a lot to the team, Toure brings in some much needed experience however I've heard Luis Alberto and Atsu are 'Fulham' type players (this was said by a Spanish ex-Premier League player). Mkhitaryan worries me slightly but the general consensus is he is a quality player. Personally i would like to see another signing to add more quality than experience or potential.

Last season was the first where I have fully concentrated on FPL, just wanted to get some thoughts on playing your first WC.
I'm assuming the main aim is to catch early price rises but is there a risk that it could blow up in your face if injuries/suspensions/fixture changes occur?

Bit of a myth I think joga. There was some analysis of the top 1k players saying 95% of them had played their wcin the first 5 gws or something but probably 80-85% of people played there wc's in the first 5 gws too so it probably only really worked for 950 people out of circa 2million so 0.5%.

That was my reading of that research but I could be wrong. Get your team set up right so you don't need the early wc and you'll do ok.

Also try not to pick a team with transfers already planned for the first few gws as you will want those early bandwagons and budget surprises that crop up every year.

Yea mate, couldn't agree more, I wouldn't advise people to use it early, I was merely stating that I used it last year. I think that it's important to amend something early for damage control but if you start will it would be ill advised to be using it so early on.
