Pre-Season

Pre Season Section Now Live

With July now upon us, the Pre-Season section of the site is up and running once again as we edge towards the first batch of friendlies. We’ve collated the current summer schedule for all 20 Premier League clubs and also added links to every article referencing the upcoming season, from Moving Targets to Sleepers, Great Expectations to Scout Reports to Fixture Analysis pieces, in addition to a look back at the three promoted sides displays in the previous campaign.

We’ll be updating the Pre-Season section on a daily basis, adding every article upon publication. Each team also has their own “Scout Notes” and “Form Players” sections – we’ll be scouring the friendlies and, as well as rolling out plenty of Scout Scribbles articles to cover the games, will be using this as a handy one-stop-shop for your guide ahead of next month’s kick-off.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

Do point hits in FPL, count in your overall score or position? I actually don't know the answer.

Not sure I understand the question, doesn't one determine the other?

They apply to both that week's points and your overall points, which give your rank for that week and your overall rank.

      They do.

I don't think they show up in the weekly tables as this annoyed me with one of my mini leagues. Other people were winning each week, but just because they would make 4 or 5 transfers a week!

Was ok as it wasn't for cash and their overall score was pants.

They call them 'point hits' because they hit your points.
If they didn't they might call them 'free transfers' as it sounds better then 'point misses'.

Iago Aspas' shots to goal stats from last year compared to the Premier League would have seen him the second most accurate in the PL, second to only super sub Romelu Lukaku. This also puts Aspas, surprisingly ahead of van Persie, Bale and Suarez amongst many others.

I'm sure some of you FF nuts, would have already seen this table, but here it is for those that haven't: http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1691272-all-you-needed-to-know-about-new-liverpool-signing-iago-aspas/page/5

From what I've seen of him, he creates just as much as he scores aswell. This was for a team in La Liga in a relegation battle all season, Celta Vigo, who many La Liga experts say would have gone down without Aspas.

Dare I mention the name Michu? Dare I say its a strong possibility Aspas may even return better than Michu?

However, we must also take into account that Aspas will slot into a team with a few players, he shouldnt be the ONE at Liverpool, but I suppose anything is possible, especially when he will be playing with better players. If its true what they say, that should make him even better. If he is as good as the stats suggest, playing in a number of positions in the process, upfront, out wide and in the hole. Aspas could prove to be a must if he adapts quickly and delivers well from the start.

Unlike Michu, I'm guessing he'll be classified as a striker, denting his appeal.

If Suarez goes that's a different matter. Gonna file in my "Hmmm... wait and see" pile for now.

I just checked and he scored 3 penalties last season. With this in mind I would be more concerned with a shot conversion ratio less than Cazorla's than his percentage of shots on target. If you take the three penalties off him he actually only scored 1 goals every 309 minutes of football which is quite poor in an easy league to score in.

Obviously a mitigating factor in this could be the fact he was playing for one of the lesser clubs but at this moment in time I won't be going near him with these kind of paltry returns.

    Repost:

Thinking about it, given the massive pressure that is on SAF's successor, if United would have been wiser employing a fall guy first. A Benitez character of sort to soak up the punches that will inevitably come now that the reign is over, and quality will most likely suffer.

And then someone like Moyes would come in and sort of get it back on track.

When you get that message the comment usually does go through - 9 times out of 10. The site sends the comment request to HC and gives it a limited period of time to respond before going ahead and reloading the page. If the response is a little slow coming back (perhaps due to a moment of high load) it's possible in rare cases that you'll see that message.

Lost at the end of a previous post but how do people think the fact that we will have 11 days less in this years epl season compared to last will effect our strategies going into the new season?

My initial thoughts as expressed earlier are to keep the wc handy for the likely bumper dbl gw's and possible treble gw that might surface towards the end of the season but I am also wary of the effect rotation might have on the bigger teams who have crammed fixture schedules in the run in.

A ffs article on the effect the world cup had on the amount of dbl gw's the last time it rolled around might be handy?

I think you misunderstood what he's trying to say mate. I think he's trying to get at the fact that the season itself is shorter so they might have to cram the same amount of games into less days, hence possibly more DGW's

      Random question about...Luis Suarez

So the nippy attacker is suspended for a number of games. How will this reflect on his early price and is it ever worth getting a player of his caliber in a few gameweeks before the suspension has been served?

I don't think his price will be lower because of it. And it is absolutely not worth wasting £10-12m and a striker spot just to save a couple of £0.1m price rises. Get him the week he starts back if you're confident he'll pick up where he left off.

Ferguson for all his amazing talents was very poor with the media, prone to over reactions and hissy fits. Moyes is far more measured.

He's a real pain for journalists as he doesn't reveal much, which makes him perfect in terms of PR.

Ferguson built up two decades worth of credit that allowed him to do that. Over time if you wind up journalists you will come a cropper, whether in football, politics or banking.

Banning journalists from press conferences because they dared to question him was a sign of weakness not strength.

Hmm, although there has been some issues in the past, the youth set up at Chelsea is exceptionally strong at the moment, with a huge proportion of the prominent players being English. I know the prospects of first team football aren't exactly great for the youngsters, but the training standard and style of play is excellent. I wouldn't be too downhearted.

I'm not downhearted don't worry 😀 . He probably won't make it to the top level even if he stayed at WBA. Just seems like a lot of young talent is wasted at the top clubs. McEarchran is a good example. Not all Chelsea's fault, the players should have more desire to play 1st team football early in their career rather than get a pay rise and have the staus of being a chelsea player

I have a question about the sky games double captain situation. I understand that if you have RVP captain gw1 sat you can change it to aguero on sun and get double points for both. What i dont get is if you want to take advantage of the double captain situation gw2 do you have to leave aguero as your captain for the sat and then change it for bale on the sunday therefore using your 1 change or is it possible to you use you captain change moving it from aguero pre saturday games to say torres and then change it on sunday to bale? Wow that sounds complicated. Basically am i locked into my captain from the previous gameweek if i want to take advantage of the double captain or is there a grace period where it will let me set my captain for the week and then change it also.

I'm assuming it starts from the beginning of the next gameweek, but would be good to get some clarity.

At the moment my assumption is that the only way to take advantage of the double gameweek is to hope the double capt plays sun and midweek.

Ok, Ive had a look at the rules again and it does appear that you are locked in. You have one captain change within the period of Sat 0:01am to end of Friday. So you start with the one you last had in the previous gameweek.

That means you really need to have a good plan to study the fixtures. If for example you capt RVP one week and he's then injured you will need to change but that is the only change you get. This could work out to be double capt pts for the shrewd and injury free managers but not with those with injury risks.

This is what i assumed which actually means this is going take alot of planning and luck to fully exploit the double captain. Perhaps thats why we have 40 transfers this time. Averages 4 a month with an average of 4 gameweeks a month. Certainly no casual player will be anyway near winning with this captain situation. Infact you may sometimes have to choose a captain you wouldnt normally just to get 2 captains

That is the key isn't it. Always better to have two captains than one. This means I'm definitely revisiting your list of potential bargains and going for as many heavy hitters as possible. If I'm going to have to leave the armband on a player I want some good choices.

RVP - Caz - Bale - Haz minimum. ...with a Man City as well.

I would go as far as to say you shouldnt transfer out a defender at all and should focus on exploiting the captain situation. If you have a team of big hitters and a few constant cheapies who rake in bonus points you can swap big hitters in and out nearly every week.

Can't help but think it's a silly signing. Most of their success at the beginning of last season was built on a really hard working, honest group of players. Not sure how Nico will contribute to that, although he could be a flair punt...

I hope he does well. Not a fan of Man U but rather them than City or Chelsea...and Moyes seems a decent bloke

Exactly what I thought. Journalists nightmare, management dream. Text book press conference...except that bit where he forgot Ashley Young's name. At least he didn't do a Kinnear and call him Alan or something.

    From Yahoo website:

So the bullet points from Moyes conference:

    - Rooney is not for sale
    - United are looking to strengthen, hopefully before their pre-season tour
    - Moyes was told by Ferguson that he was to take the job

Right - headlong into some Baines statistics from the excellent guys at EPL Index.

In the 2012/13 season, Baines created a chance every 29.48 minutes. This constituted 24% of all chances created by the entire Everton team. As a comparison, this figure was every 44.33 minutes in 2011/12 which made up 17% of the team's total.

It is stats like this that make him such a superb prospect in defence given that some top level midfielders would struggle in comparison. However, as we know, Everton were not clean sheet heros at the back and the attacking line often failed to convert those created chances

I'm wondering whether a mooted transfer to United will affect these statistics, or what we can read into them. It may be that his productivity in creating chances diminishes, but that the conversion rate of these chances increase dramatically with the like of Van Persie up front. That coupled with a higher rate of clean sheets means that he could be in for some very tasty returns.

If the move happens, i'm getting him.

The problem is the quality of crosses he created. I bet Jarvis was pretty high up that statistic table too but it has been shown that crosses from deep is one of the least efficient means of getting a goal. If he were setting up chances from a pass inside the box or putting in through balls then the quality of chance would be much higher and he would score more.

I am not saying he won't be dynamite at utd but I would remain sceptical and with the loss of set pieces I don't think I would be going near them and this is without even taking account of the fact that he is a rubbish defender and will likely lead to utd keeping fewer cs too.
