Scout Report – Dwight Gayle

Ian Holloway’s search for a new striker saw the Crystal Palace boss snap up Dwight Gayle from Peterborough United for a club record fee of £4.5m last week. The 22-year-old arrives at Selhurst Park on a four-year deal and is the second player to bolster the Palace ranks this summer, following the acquisition of Stephen Dobbie from Brighton.

One of 12 managers reportedly chasing Gayle’s signature, Holloway lavished praise upon the new boy after securing the deal, indicating he’s likely to be a key figure for the season ahead:

“He’s got an opportunity now to go and enjoy his football and I think he’ll score goals at Premier League level, goals from certain people just keep happening, it doesn’t matter which level you start at, they just keep happening. I think the way he plays, the boy moves like a top player. It’s now about helping him deal with the top level against top defenders. My chairman went in with a brief – don’t come out of the room without getting him – and I’m thankful. He’s given us a goalscorer of the future in our team right now, which is priceless.”

The History

A product of the Arsenal youth academy, Gayle was released by the Gunners as a teenager and picked up by non-league outfit Stansted in 2009. Having scored 59 times for the club during 2010/11, the forward was then acquired by Dagenham and Redbridge but was farmed out on loan to Bishops Stortford, where his eye for goal came to the fore once more, with 42 strikes in a year.

Returning to Dagenham in August 2012, Gayle registered seven goals in 18 appearances before Peterborough acquired him on loan in November last year. The club then signed him on a permanent deal a couple of months later for a fee of around £500,000 but despite producing 13 goals and six assists in 29 appearances, Gayle was unable to prevent The Posh from slipping out of the Championship into League One.

The Prospects

With last season’s top scorer Glenn Murray potentially out for the season after sustaining cruciate knee ligament damage in the Championship semi-final play-off against former club Brighton, Gayle’s prospects of game time certainly look good, judging by his new manager’s comments.

Having featured in non-league football a mere 12 months ago, the Palace new boy is keenly aware of his turnaround in fortunes and is desperate to vindicate Holloway’s decision to hand him a top-flight chance:

“He’s a good manager and for him to point out my talent and my ability is a good feeling. I just hope I can repay him with goals for the club and help them stay in the Premier League. He’s built a very attacking side, which is what you need really…The chance came and I had to grab it because I might not get another chance. To be playing in the Premier League from where I’ve come from is a big achievement really. I’m just really looking forward to it and hopefully I can take the opportunity with both hands and do well.”

Towards the end of last term, Holloway utilised a 4-2-3-1 formation, only opting for a couple of forwards up top when looking to inject a little extra attacking edge to his team’s play. Likely to be handed the lone role up top, Gayle has the fleet of foot and finishing skills to complement Holloway’s tactics, allowing Palace to sit deep and break quickly on the counter – in addition, his speed and work rate will also be essential in maintaining the high pressing game required.

With spot-kicks also expected to be part of his armoury in light of Murray’s injury, Gayle may well be targeted by Fantasy managers eyeing up a cheap third forward – granted, question marks remain over his ability to produce at the highest level but promoted forwards such as Grant Holt and Rickie Lambert have more than atoned for a lack of Premier League experience over the last couple of campaigns.

A price of around 5.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) is anticipated and with home games against Sunderland, Swansea and Fulham in the opening eight Gameweeks, Gayle has the platform to pick up the points at Selhurst Park. With Holloway confirming he has no plans to bring Wilfried Zaha on loan from Man United, Palace enter this season without their two star men from the previous campaign – Gayle’s contribution looks more crucial than ever if his new club are to prove the doubters wrong and avoid the drop.

Yeah, I guess that is most likely.

Van Ginkel's seems like a long term Lampard replacement, so will probably learn from him this season.
Mikel is leaving, so presumably De Rossi will be first choice DM (or Alonso)
Not sure where Ramires fits into this though, I really like him as a player

Maybe we can distribute our funds a little better anyway, 25M on a attacking midfielder seems steep when we need a Centre back, left back cover, a defensive midfielder and maybe even a Suarez replacement.

it's funny - TOT, ARS wanted Villa - goes to Atletico, LIV wanted Mkhitaryan - goes to Dortmund, Caviani - rumors about CHE, MAN CITY = maybe PSG, Higuain = maybe stay in Madrid.

I don't believe in this - I don't think that LIV will sell Suarez for 30-35M to any of his rivals, and I don't think also that someone from Premier League will give more than this for him. Maybe he will go to Real - they haven't bought any spectacular superstar yet, so maybe Suarez?
Maybe Rooney to CHE? But is he a person who is necessarily needed there?

This is an interesting one. I would say the fee paid doesn't offer value, since he isn't proven in top flight football.

He did hassle many defences last year though and works hard.

Be interesting to see how this pans out, but I would be more inclined to invest in Cornelius as my third option. Though, I am sure he will be priced around 6.5.

Would have to see how he goes before having Gayle in the FPL team, but I think Holloway may go gung-ho so he could be a third striker option. As for the fee, it seems fairly reasonable for an up-and-coming player; Peterbro would be mad to let him go to a team with new PL riches for cut-price.

You're probably right. But, I was referring to top flight football worldwide. Villa have signed Helenius for £1.2mill, potentially rising to £2mill.

Now, I have known of him for a while and he has heaps of potential a la Beneteke.

I think we all know english players are massively over priced.

From a squad strength perspective, what Rodgers is doing at Liverpool is great.
From a fantasy perspective, I can tell rotation is going to be awful.

    Reina to rotate with Mignolet.
    Kelly to rotate with Johnson
Enrique to rotate with new LB (Cissokho?)
No idea of ideal CB pairing, though Agger will be in it.
Lucas and Allen have no fantasy prospects
Gerrard could be a prospect again, but is likely to still be expensive and may not be worth it, dependent on penalties.
Coutinho/Sturridge/Aspas/Alberto/Downing/Henderson/Borini/Suarez (Suarez replacement) to fit into 4 slots

Hopefully Rodgers will settle on a lineup and stick with it, but there are no guarantees.

If Suarez stays the front 4 should be:

    Suarez, Coutinho, Aspas
    Sturridge

    Without him (assuming no replacement)

    Coutinho, Henderson, Aspas
    Sturridge

Though another attacking mid may get signed to replace Henderson. I can still see plenty of rotation occurring there though, unfortunately.

Yup, Aspas is Downing's replacement on the right wing it looks like.
And he'll fill in as central striker when Sturridge is injured

Coutinho could play LW or CAM, hard to tell.

I'd love to see Downing go to West Ham for anything over £6m, last season he brought work rate and defensive tracking back, and that's it. A poor man's Dirk Kuyt if you will.

I agree with that, pretty much. Alberto is a replacement for Shelvey, ie youngster on the fringes, but hopefully a bit better than him, and more suited to Rodgers' system.

I realised I didn't include any of the youth players that could be pushing for appearances.

Surely they've priced Van Ginkel wrong in Sky? He's 3.6 and next cheapest midfielders (non-starters for Stoke, Southampton, Newcastle and Hull) are all 4.0

Anyway, Gayle is one of the cheapest viable striker options at 6.1. Gayle + Van Ginkel as your budget options you can pick whichever 5 other attackers you want, and still have enough for a reasonably strong defence:

    Ruddy
    Santon Huth Riise
    Bale Hazard Cazorla Arteta VanGinkel

Can't see it personally, particularly not at 8-10m, far more likely a loan with a view to buy.

We're likely to spend our last bit of good money on Duvan Zapata with a 6.7m fee agreed and work permit hearing pending.

Plus, since he's been at WHU, Sam has preferred playing a traditional winger on one side and almost a second striker on the other who is prepared to track back. As Jarvis has the winger role nailed down, I just can't see us going out for Downing to just add competition for Jarvis at this stage.

I could be talking complete rubbish though!

You'll be lucky to spot such value again, certainly nothing like Michu seems on the cards this season. Still, let's see what other transfers come in.

My left-field attack options for potential include Kone (think he could do really well at EVE) and I quietly fancy the nutrock that is Craig Bellamy. He could dominate many of Cardiff's set plays, a la Rickie, and he's still got pace to burn, always an asset. Not sure what his fitness will be like though.

RvW (NOR) could be another one to watch, he's got talent and is a real poacher, but NOR aren't terribly good though.

RvW is definitely the top of my list at the minute.

Bellamy isn't a bad one for the watchlist, but with only 5 goals and 8 assists in the league last year and likely to be classified as a striker, I might give that one a miss.

I have heard good things about Tonov chaps.

There was Carroll and Adam in 2011/12 and Lambert, Bentekkers and Michu last year... Got to be a couple of bargain stars out there.

Ricky Van Wolfswinkel, Marco Van Ginkel and WIlfried Bony.

Every year the potential for bargains gets written off. There's always some to be found. Also, as FPL becomes bigger and bigger, those at FPL towers do their research more and more; but it is in their interests to make the game interesting and throw in/maintain in a few bargains.

There are not always such outstanding bargains as there was last year tho mathmo.

Most year the likes of Michu end up being SEB's, boselli's, graham's, jimenez's etc. There are always some but to have Fellaini, Michu and Lambert all in the one season was exceptional I think.

Last year was superb with three fairly cheap high scoring players. But I firmly believe that there has to be at least one bragain at or below 5.5, a couple of 6.5 gems (considering that's the price Michu started at) and maybe a few in the 7-8 category to choose from.

Question [somewhat] off the back of the article...

How much of a chance do you give this years three promoted sides at still being Premier League outfits come May 2014?

And which, if any, of their players are you even considering entertaining the thought of them being in future Fantasy Football squads?

I don't get to see any championship footy but Cardiff seem to have the pockets and more importantly are targeting the right players to stay up imo.
I think the relegation battle will be fierce again with 5 or 6 clubs in the mix.
I'll consider this Gayle chap. Maybe Brady as a fifth mid

        Yeah.

I honestly hold a really low opinion of Hull and Palace as potential Premier League teams so trying to see if it's just me or not. I only like Koren (bit old) and Speroni (good, but will concede a lot with his defence).

Cardiff will be a more competent side in my books but even in Fantasy I don't think I'll love them very much.

Cardiff and Hull to go straight back down imo but as with Bpool and other relegated teams I think their could be a few bargains in there.

I am looking at elmo and gayle with possibly McGregor too (depending on pricing and rotation etc). If Garvan is on pens he could be a cheap fifth mid too, he is palace's answer to Adam imo.

They seem like a weak 3 to me. Maybe if Cardiff splash the cash wisely and Sunderland/Stoke collapse this season though they could survive.

A cheap Hull defender could be in my squad, a cheap Palace 5th mid could also do well under Holloway's system.

They've all got a chance, based on the unpredictability and success of promoted clubs in recent years.

Cardiff are probably the best bet to perform well, but Bruce and Holloway know their way around the Premier League.

Willing to consider a wide range of players based on budget and form, but I reckon particularly:

      Koren
      Brady
      Elmohamady

      Dobbie
      Gayle
      Parr

      Bellamy
      Cornelius

It's always a two pronged question, will the three promoted sides stay up, or will one of the incumbent teams go down. Norwich, Southampton, Stoke and Sunderland could be in the mix for relegation, but I realistically only Cardiff have the solidity on and off the pitch to deal with the rigours of the premier league.

I fully expect Hull to be the whipping boys in the manner that Derby were a few seasons ago, and can see Palace delivering a mediocre campaign at best. I was impressed by Gayle when I watched him play, but I won't expect him to trouble premiership defences too much. A truly spectacular season for him would involve, at best, a DJ Campbell style FPL haul of 13 goals and that is me being very very optimistic.

Saying that he wanted to go back to Chelsea was a nice safety net to have. Don't get me wrong, I think Chelsea are a top flight club but, as I said, it's in Mourinho's nature to want to win trophies at different clubs and you'd be a fool to think he didn't want the opportunity at United.

I wouldn't say Chelsea are United's biggest rival. 2009-2010 was the last time you won the league, yeah?

He's already done it at Chelsea though hasn't he? It's in his nature to move on after success. You're telling me he didn't want that United job? Come on... I know he loves Chelsea and has fond memories but he's ambitious and I'm sure he would have loved the opportunity to manage United.

Come back when you have 13 league titles... Arsenal are sheer class in everything they do (apart form signing players)

Chelsea are the complete opposite. team full of mercenaries/racists/adulters/criminals

Now you're just being silly and having a dig at Arsenal because you're trying to defend Chelsea. As a United fan, I admire and respect Arsenal a lot more than I respect Chelsea. Chelsea came into a lot of money and bought success (still not as much as they should have done), they go through managers like nobodys business.. It's just hard to have respect for a club like that.

is it wrong to have many managers and buy top players with a lot of money? there isn't a rule for that.

This is a completely different story. There has only ever been one Alex Ferguson and if you prove yourself and win trophies after his reign.. you are really proving yourself as a top manager. In my opinion anyway.. It's a lot of pressure to handle.

Rooney does look much fitter in the training pics. Zaha is ripped as well.

If you want to talk about dodgy look at Gary Neville with one too many buttons undone and a jumper tied around his waste. He's dressed like a 14 year old trying to get into a club for the first time.
