Scout Report – Victor Wanyama

Southampton boss Mauricio Pochettino moved to bolster his midfield earlier this week by signing Victor Wanyama from Glasgow Celtic for a reported fee of £12.5m. The 22-year-old arrives at St Mary’s on a four-year contract and is the Saints’ second new face this summer, following the capture of centre-half Dejan Lovren earlier in the transfer window.

Having pursued the player for a number of weeks, Pochettino was clearly delighted at finally clinching the Kenyan’s signature. Speaking to the club’s official website, the Saints boss revealed he has high expectations for the new arrival over the season ahead:

“I am very pleased to have secured the signing of Victor because we are a big admirer of his talents and he will fit in well to the team here at Southampton. The fact that a lot of top European clubs were also keen to sign him shows what an attractive prospect Southampton Football Club is to a player who had his pick of the teams in England and abroad. I’ve watched him perform at the top level in the Champions League, and I believe that he will be a valuable addition to our Premier League squad for the season ahead.”

The History

After a youth career which included a spell at Swedish club Helsingborg along with his brother McDonald Mariga (now of Inter Milan), Wanyama was finally picked up as a 17-year-old by Belgian second division outfit Beerschot FC in the summer of 2008. During his time there, Wanyama turned out 49 times, producing a goal and assist, though his game time was slightly curtailed after he received a couple of three-match bans for violent behaviour.

Finally signed by long-term admirer Neil Lennon in the summer of 2011 after the Glasgow club had a bid rejected the previous year, Wanyama quickly developed into a key player for the Hoops. His first season at Parkhead produced four goals and four assists from 29 appearances but last year the Kenyan found the net with a little more regularity, producing six goals and three assists from 32 league games. Wanyama also grabbed a goal in Celtic’s Champions League home win over Barcelona, with his displays earning him the accolade of SPL Young Player of the Year for 2012/13. The midfielder has turned out for his country on 22 occasions, scoring twice.

The Prospects

Standing six foot two inches tall and built more like a boxer, Wanyama is the type of player for whom the phrase “midfield powerhouse” seems to have been penned. While his endless energy and tough-tackling are key attributes, branding him no more than a ball-winner is doing the Kenyan a great disservice; he’s deceptively quick for a player of his stature, is good in possession, and, in addition to having a penchant for long range strikes, has the technique and confidence to bring the ball forward from deep. It’s little wonder Arsenal were amongst a number of clubs linked with a possible move for his services.

Wanyama’s arrival at St Mary’s looks bad news for Jack Cork, then, with the new boy set to link up with Morgan Schneiderlin in the double-pivot in Pochettino’s 4-2-3-1 formation next time out. Given that the Frenchman won more tackles and made more interceptions than any other player in the Premier League last season, Southampton look set to have a formidable pairing based in front of their back-four, with Schneiderlin perhaps stationed a little deeper, allowing Wanyama to burst forward and lend his considerable weight to his side’s attacks.

Yet to be listed in the Sky Sports game, Wanyama will set you back 3.0 in the Sun Dream Team – 0.5 more than Schneiderlin and Adam Lallana, for example, and the same price as Gaston Ramirez. In terms of Fantasy Premier League (FPL), a cost of around 5.0 or 5.5 is anticipated, though Ramirez and Lallana’s more advanced berths in the attacking midfield three are likely to lessen interest in the new boy, particularly if the pair come in at 6.0 or less.

From a Fantasy perspective, the upside of Wanyama’s arrival, allied with the purchase of Lovren, is that Southampton are growing ever-more enticing from a defensive perspective for the season ahead. Pochettino’s side shipped just nine goals in the last 10 matches of 2012/13 and with these two new additions on board, look a real option at the back – all the more so given their main assets are expected to come in under 5.0 in FPL.

With Wanyama and Schneiderlin patrolling the centre of the park, Nathaniel Clyne and Luke Shaw will be afforded plenty license to forage forward from the full-back areas time and again. A schedule that sees Sunderland, West Ham, Palace, Swansea, Fulham, Hull and Villa the first seven visitors to St Mary’s could barely be any kinder and with a strong home/away rotation partnership offered with West Ham, twinning Clyne or Shaw with Hammers left-back Razvan Rat, for example, just got that little bit more appetising.

Hi guys I just want to talk a little bit about football formations. My football team struggled early in the season with a 4231 formation after having a great season last year. We had lost a couple of our key attacking players and we noticed we weren't using our wingers that much.

We chose to change the formation to some sort of 532 with WB's and immediately our performance picked up. The relatively low quality of the social division we are in means that not many goals come as a result of headed crosses so we felt we didn't need 4 players on the flanks at all times.

Yesterday we played a team that we lost to ealier in the seaon 6-2 but managed an emphatic win beating them this time 5-1. We altered our formation slightly again in this game to more of a 3412 as we started to really understand the strengths and weaknesses of our team. that formation involves WB's and DM's in the 4 with 3 CB's in behind. I understand Manchester City were using this formation a lot last season and was wondering if other teams use it as well? Do you think it could be a strong answer to the commonly used 4231 possession based formations you see today?

I believe this is exactly what Martinez will be employing at Everton. Baines and Coleman being perfect for the WB roles.

Yeah I noticed he used that at Wigan a lot. Although I'm not sure he will use a traditional trifecta. Didn't he use only 1 striker with two in behind?

I think teams need to be a lot more fluid these days and react to the team and formation that they face with pretty much every game.
Your team look to have found that formation because you were forced into it by the loss of certain players.
Would you have played or even experimented with playing the different way had you not lost those players.
Even though you'd lost the previous game?
I've never been a player or coach so have not been in your position.

It does seem to me that the ability to change formation quickly within a game is important and it surely requires very good management and players to be able to do it effectively.

Had we not lost our key attacking players from the previous season there is no way we would have changed formation. We won every league game the previous season so with the same players I would have expected more of the same. You are right to suggest we were forced into it mainly through bad results and our inability to adjust with the loss of those players. We needed a formation that best suited the strengths of our team and exploited the weaknesses of the opposition. It certainly is very solid against a counter attack which is prevalent in our league.

We shifted it only slightly from the start of the game where we had 1 DB and 2CM's to having 2DM's and 1 AM as it suited the characteristics of the players we had in those positions. It just worked better.

Here is a good example of Mancini using a 3412 to turn the tide against Tottenham who were using a 4231. http://www.zonalmarking.net/2012/11/12/manchester-city-2-1-tottenham-tactics/

10 teams make the playoffs. 2 Conferences of 5 each. 4th & 5th in each conference play each other in the 1st round. 8 left after this round.

only the top 5 from each conference - which makes for 10 teams, so that is a bit odd

I'm in the same boat, but towards England! Now that I'm 59th overall, I'd go for my Fantasy team, but before I found that out, I was rooting for England. haha.

I am South African though. Although, my entire family's from the UK, so I still feel a fair amount of patriotism towards England, but not $5000AUD worth of patriotism. 😉

I've got a new job and have to re-locate and here in India you don't have free WI-FIs everywhere so i may not be able to come online for some time. I haven't been on FFS in the past few days so I don't know if it's already been said, but I just logged onto the FPL website, and it no longer redirects you to the Maintenance page, but rather takes you to the Re-registration page. I GOT SO EXCITED!!!! 🙁
The game's not up and running yet :(, but you can see last season's stats again.

I thought they might've been doing a test run or something, even if it hadn't yet been officially opened, so when I clicked on "Pick My Team" and "Transfers", I was hoping I'd AT LEAST sneak in some player prices or something! 🙁 haha.

Anyway, looks like it shouldn't be too many days away now. Cannot wait! Although, my final team will be really different to my first, the player prices are still so exciting! 🙂

Off to bed now. You know it's 4am, when you've been playing the game religiously for years, and you accidentally type "www.fantasypremierleague.com". I'm exhausted.

    Cheers 😀

Which are the teams whose activity in the transfer market has improved you the most?

Firstly, I choose Manchester City. I know they bought Fernandinho for twice the price he's worth, but atleast that solves the perennial problem of finding a box-to-box midfielder to play alongside Yaya. After all, both Garcia and Rodwell were huge fails last year. Also, Navas will provide the much needed width to the City attack, another superb signing. The only other player who they actually need is Jovetic (and NOT Negredo, who has a similar style of play as Aguero). Jovetic has excelled as the second striker for Fiorentina, and if tucked in behind Aguero, could be a massive assist king in FPL, and more importantly, would further Aguero's appeal.

Secondly, it must be Norwich. A team which was resilient defensively, but had to resort to its defenders to score the goals (their back 4 scored 11 of the 41 they scored last year). van Wolfswinkel, Redmond and Fer are perfectly relevant signings, phasing out Hoolahan, Tettey and Holt from the XI, and Olsson provides solid backup for both Pilkington and Garrido. With the amazing run of fixtures in the first sector, I wouldn't be surprised if Norwich attackers outshine their fellow defenders. More importantly, RvW emerges as a solid 3rd striker contender, given the fact he will likely be a million or two less costly than Carroll, Bony or Lambert, strikers from other mid-price teams who have solid fixtures.

Apart from these two, Swansea, Aston Villa and West Ham have had solid yet unspectacular transfer windows so far.

Arsenal are looking great, with Higuain, Suarez and Rooney up front with Fellaini and Bender in midfield... oh hang on, just rumours, we've just got Sanogo...

        Kolo Toure? No.
Alberto? Maybe will do well in a couple of years.

The only player who intrigues me FPL-wise is Aspas, though wouldn't be so sure about having a POO forward in my team.

yea it was called Football Superstar, and it was a one year contract to play in their youth side. However I don't think we're as bad as everyone is talking it up 2 be I agree there are quiet a few players in our All Stars team that are pretty pathetic however look how far our league has come with the likes of ADP, Kewell, Ono and Heskey. It's just unfortunate that three of the best players in the a-league (ADP, Ono and Hersi) are unable to participate in our All Stars team.

At the moment have Aspas and Johnson in the team.
Really interesting to see how it will pan out in the end.
The only worry for me is that I can be looking through these pink glasses as an LFC fan and that will blind my sane vision 🙁
I have no ManU in my team either. But I honestly don't know if the anticipated 14m tag for Mr van Persie will justify the choice. And now I can see no one else I can pick from ManU attack that would be nailed on and more justified than my front seven of: Aspas, Kone, van Wolfs / Hazard, Bale, Cazorla, Yaya.

          Yes FPL.
I would look at same players. But for now can only see van Persie as a viable firing option.
But considering Kagawa may be more nailed on right from the start, maybe, just maybe, he's DUE to deliver just because he plays for ManU?
You think there's a chance Kagawa will not exceed 8m?
