Scout Report – Emanuele Giaccherini

Sunderland boss Paolo Di Canio’s summer spending spree continued yesterday with the capture of Emanuele Giaccherini from Italian champions Juventus. The 28-year-old arrives on Wearside in a four-year deal reported to be in the region of £6.5m and is the ninth new player to sign up at the Stadium of Light over the close season as Di Canio attempts to improve upon last term’s seventeenth place finish:

Upon completion of the deal, the new boy admitted to the Italian media that next year’s World Cup in Brazil played a key part in the move, as he looks to nail down a regular role on Wearside:

“I am full of enthusiasm and want to do good things as part of this adventure. I want to thank [Juventus] coach Antonio Conte. In the last two years he has given me the possibility to shine and make a name for myself here. A big part of my success is down to him. I thank him for that and will do so personally in the next few days. I have got into the national team now and I want to stay there. I will do everything for that. I hope this new adventure can push me to the World Cup. I will do my best playing in the English championship, which is the best in the world. Yesterday I spoke with Paolo Di Canio. For me, due to the fact that I don’t know the language, he will be a fundamental reference point, especially on the field.”

The History

Giaccherini’s career began in the 2003-04 campaign, where he notched 15 times for Cesena’s youth team. Over the next four seasons he was farmed out on loan to lower tier clubs Forli, Bellaria Igea and Pavia but his development seemed to stall, with just 13 goals scored over 87 matches for the three sides. Returning to his parent club in time for the 2008-09 season, Giaccherini helped Cesena rise through the divisions and eventually settle in Serie A, with 20 goals and four assists over 97 appearances.

His displays subsequently saw Juventus come calling in August 2011. Over his two seasons with the “Old Lady”, Giaccherini featured 40 times (with 21 of those appearances arriving off the bench) and produced four goals and six assists as the club won back-to-back league titles. He’s also featured 14 times for the Italian national side, scoring twice and providing a trio of assists.

The Prospects

A versatile campaigner, Giaccherini offers options on both wings in addition to through the middle. While the former Juventus man is more than capable of flourishing in “the hole”, Di Canio’s acquisition of Jozy Altidore suggests the Black Cats boss is looking to field a front two, with the US international expected to partner Steven Fletcher up top for Sunderland next season.

Standing just five foot five, Giaccherini is an archetypal wideman, with his trickery and directness in possession likely to torment many a full-back in the season ahead. Furthermore, he will bring a much-needed creativity to the Black Cats’ ranks – statistics show he provided a “key pass” at a rate superior to any Juventus team mate last term.

Certainly, regular game time seems secure for the new boy. Di Canio looked unconvinced by James McClean as a first-team option, with Giaccherini perhaps set to be handed the role on the Sunderland left, with either Adam Johnson or Stephane Sessegnon selected on the opposite flank. Yet to be added to any of the Fantasy games, a price of 7.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) looks on the cards, mirroring the cost of both Johnson and Sessegnon.

While there’s no doubt Giaccherini’s transfer is something of a coup for the Wearsiders, the initial schedule is likely to be enough of a deterrent to prevent any real bandwagon picking up in pace. Granted, an opening day home clash with Fulham, allied with a Gameweek 3 trip to Palace, has the potential for points but beyond that, a run of games which pits the Black Cats against Arsenal, Liverpool, United, City, Chelsea and Spurs in six of seven home fixtures between Gameweeks 4 and 15 is likely to dissuade even the most optimistic of Black Cats fan from investing from the off, allowing the little Italian time to settle before we consider splashing out on his services.

Unravelling the Rooney situation (you can use this as the hot topic title if you like)

There has been much said about the Rooney situation in the media. He has recently been reported to have been 'angry and confused' about Man Utd's feelings towards him. But there has been a lot we haven't been told. Here is the truth:

Whilst in Asia (a place where karaoke is hugely popular) Moyes took the boys in red out to a karaoke bar. RVP tried his hand at Sloop John B and De Gea at Gay Bar (naturally). Then it was Moyes' turn...a deathly silence fell upon the room as the players nervously anticipated his choice of tune. The new manager needed to make a good impression, these guys were still unconvinced about him...

Up he stepped as the tune to the Left Banke's hit 'Walk away Renee' started to chime across the dimly lit room. Moyes met Wayne's eyes across the bar...you could cut the tension with a knife...Then the chorus hit

    "Just walk away Roon-ay
you won't see me follow you back home"

Suddenly, Wayne leapt to his feet and stormed out of the karaoke bar. He was angry...and not to mention confused. 🙁

The next morning the media heard Moyes mumble about needing to work on left back cover...what he really was saying was he needed to work on his left banke cover. The truth was lost on everyone.

Here endeth the tale of Rooney and Moyes.

I don't disagree but who advised him that "angry and confused" was a good soundbite to go with?!

If he's trying to engineer a move then why publicly fall out with the manager, the board and all the fans. He has been around for long enough to play the media and situation better than that surely?

And what is he looking for exactly, a bigger club? More money?

Is anyone expecting Sunderland to do well this year? They've made a shedload of new signings. I'm still not convinced with PDC though.

This signing is great for them. I'm not saying they'll storm up the table, but they'll be a hard team to beat, their attack looks full of pace and movement and will trouble most teams.

We'll need to see just how fit before we consider him, though. Strike rate on arrival at Sunderland was superb - no question - so it will be interesting if he can feed off these new recruits and the Di Canio revolution.

Yeah I have a real soft spot for Stevie. I hope he can get fit again and force his way back into the side. Match fitness maybe the problem though, as he's only likely to be fit again when the season starts, so no pre-season in him.

Could go either way for us. We were definitely a more potent attacking side under Di Canio, until the last few games when injuries and suspensions ripped what little goal threat we had out of the side. MON's side was built to contain, not to create chances, so we had a decent defensive record but almost no creativity or impetus, so Fletcher had to be incredibly efficient with the chances that did fall to him.

Under PDC I think our attacking assets will be a better investment than under O'Neill, but we won't be as secure defensively. Either Sess or Johnson could be good investments as £7M midfielders- Johnson had more or less a monopoly on our set-pieces toward the end of the season, and IF Sess is still there at the start of the season, I'm almost certain he'll play as a striker rather than being shunted out to the wing. PDC hasn't used him as anything else since he arrived, and in the 3 and a half games he played before he was sent off against Villa he was (by his standards) pretty productive, scoring twice and assisting a couple of times too. He also started up front and scored our first 5 goals against the Italian pub team we played in a BCD friendly last week - keep an eye on him in the games over in Hong Kong next week.

Thanks man. Yeah, I guess it's a bit light in midfield. As I say above, so many decent mid-priced midfielders though. Could be where the value lies this year. If Bent goes to Toon, I would switch out Lambert for him and get Gaston instead.

Report from bottom of last article 🙄

I was really surprised to see that Lambert has been priced so low.

However, despite this I find myself overlooking him, but I'm not sure why.

Do we think his tailing off of form from the end of last season is a major issue? Do we think he'll continue to offer great value under Ponch?

I think there are a lot of decent options for strikers this year and I can't see myself spending more than 9m on one in order to facilitate a killer midfield with the likes of Walcott, Hazard, Bale etc

I can see a bit of a Grant Holt situation. I know he did brilliantly last season, but I still can't fully trust him to produce again at this level. It might be superficial, he just doesn't look like a top player. I'm happy to be proved wrong.

What are your thoughts on Dzeko? I'm interested in hearing your take on him. Assuming City stick with Dzeko and Aguero as their only forwards, do you think Dzeko will get plenty of gametime?

He's certainly got the potential and the comments from the new boss sound good. I think he has the potential to be this season's Tevez.

He could also be a victim of the system if they go with one striker, and that striker is Aguero. He will then rely on a change of approach - during games perhaps, where he would come on as a sub, or perhaps where his game is more suited to the opponent.

If they sign someone however, we may as well forget it.

Thanks. I think if they decide to go with what they have, I would go for Dzeko instead of Aguero. Spaces my team up and allow RvP to be recruited at the same time.

I try to be weary of players that drop off in form towards the end of the season. Especially when they are 'older' players. I wouldn't like to see him come down with Holt syndrome.

9 new signings! 😯 Now all he has to do is get them playing as a unified team.

I understand Laudrup signing many new players as they have a Europa season to deal with as well.

It all makes FF the more difficult as teams you would expect to have settled first choice teams, join the ranks of potential rotation hell.

Repost from previous article due to my appalling timing.

Some hopefully helpful advice for lurkers and first posters, please take in the good spirit that is intended:

Contribute! Please don't just post rate my teams but comment on others as well and join in the general discussions. Everyone's opinion is valid and welcomed.

Get a grav. Since the launch of the new campaign there have been a lot of people without one and you are much, much more likely to get responses if you take the two minutes to go to gravatar.com and set up a grav.

RMTs will see some responses, but offering choices A,BC will probably get more as it is a swifter reply. More convoluted questions (2 mids and a forward for x million) are asking quite a lot of the community.

Good to see the influx of new posters, hope someone out there has the new Michu in their pocket.

Let me know first if you do...

Is it actually true that you're more likely to get a response if you have a grav?

I'll respond no matter what personally. But there are people who won't respond just because someone doesn't have a grav?

      Maybe it's a subconscious thing.

Imagine no move is made on Mata away from Stamford Bridge, he will have that thought constantly in his head in games - might affect his performance overall. Unless he commits his performance 100% regardless of that report to prevent himself from jeopardising his World Cup chances.

I think the club are pushing Rooney into a corner, forcing him into putting in an official transfer request. If this happens then he could well end up at Chelsea. A Rooney for Mata type exchange would be interesting as a MU fan.

Deulofeu/Carroll/Garrido might not start, along with Shelvey, but I like that pick 🙂

        Cheers for that 🙂

Deulofeu is my season punt - if he starts then he will do well I think. I also have a funny feeling about Shelvey. No matter who they have played in the preseason he's already scored and assisted a couple which makes me think that he's fitted into that team nicely. Garrido you have a point about, and Carroll - well, if he isnt fit then I can swap him out without too much hoohaa, but I like WH fixtures.

No bale obviously but defence and midfield look pretty good to me. RVP is going to have to do a lot of carrying with newbie Deulofeu and injured Carroll...

Carroll is expensive enough to switch for someone like Berbatov if he isnt fit without having to do a load of jiggerypokery. Paulinho is my Spurs differential 🙂

So, who'd take Rooney as a Chelsea player for 10.5m?

Not me, I hope Chelsea can show off how overrated he is, Man Utd will do well without him!

They will do well without him, but not 'because' they are without him.
        Rooney is a class player.

And perhaps more interestingly, who'd take Mata as a Man Utd player for £10.5m?

I think him being at Man Utd would lessen his appeal for me. I'd be looking at Kagawa for value if it looks like he will be a regular.

I think I agree - 10.5 is an awful lot when we're not sure how he'd fit in. I've got my beady eye on Valencia personally.

Not sure on Paulinho tbh I reckon there are better options at that price like HBA and Nolan. Also I have doubts over Shelvey's playing time as Michu is bound to play behind Bony in Laudrup's 4-2-3-1 formation so he'll be most likely vying for one of the two holding midfield positions.
