Scout Report – Emanuele Giaccherini

Sunderland boss Paolo Di Canio’s summer spending spree continued yesterday with the capture of Emanuele Giaccherini from Italian champions Juventus. The 28-year-old arrives on Wearside in a four-year deal reported to be in the region of £6.5m and is the ninth new player to sign up at the Stadium of Light over the close season as Di Canio attempts to improve upon last term’s seventeenth place finish:

Upon completion of the deal, the new boy admitted to the Italian media that next year’s World Cup in Brazil played a key part in the move, as he looks to nail down a regular role on Wearside:

“I am full of enthusiasm and want to do good things as part of this adventure. I want to thank [Juventus] coach Antonio Conte. In the last two years he has given me the possibility to shine and make a name for myself here. A big part of my success is down to him. I thank him for that and will do so personally in the next few days. I have got into the national team now and I want to stay there. I will do everything for that. I hope this new adventure can push me to the World Cup. I will do my best playing in the English championship, which is the best in the world. Yesterday I spoke with Paolo Di Canio. For me, due to the fact that I don’t know the language, he will be a fundamental reference point, especially on the field.”

The History

Giaccherini’s career began in the 2003-04 campaign, where he notched 15 times for Cesena’s youth team. Over the next four seasons he was farmed out on loan to lower tier clubs Forli, Bellaria Igea and Pavia but his development seemed to stall, with just 13 goals scored over 87 matches for the three sides. Returning to his parent club in time for the 2008-09 season, Giaccherini helped Cesena rise through the divisions and eventually settle in Serie A, with 20 goals and four assists over 97 appearances.

His displays subsequently saw Juventus come calling in August 2011. Over his two seasons with the “Old Lady”, Giaccherini featured 40 times (with 21 of those appearances arriving off the bench) and produced four goals and six assists as the club won back-to-back league titles. He’s also featured 14 times for the Italian national side, scoring twice and providing a trio of assists.

The Prospects

A versatile campaigner, Giaccherini offers options on both wings in addition to through the middle. While the former Juventus man is more than capable of flourishing in “the hole”, Di Canio’s acquisition of Jozy Altidore suggests the Black Cats boss is looking to field a front two, with the US international expected to partner Steven Fletcher up top for Sunderland next season.

Standing just five foot five, Giaccherini is an archetypal wideman, with his trickery and directness in possession likely to torment many a full-back in the season ahead. Furthermore, he will bring a much-needed creativity to the Black Cats’ ranks – statistics show he provided a “key pass” at a rate superior to any Juventus team mate last term.

Certainly, regular game time seems secure for the new boy. Di Canio looked unconvinced by James McClean as a first-team option, with Giaccherini perhaps set to be handed the role on the Sunderland left, with either Adam Johnson or Stephane Sessegnon selected on the opposite flank. Yet to be added to any of the Fantasy games, a price of 7.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) looks on the cards, mirroring the cost of both Johnson and Sessegnon.

While there’s no doubt Giaccherini’s transfer is something of a coup for the Wearsiders, the initial schedule is likely to be enough of a deterrent to prevent any real bandwagon picking up in pace. Granted, an opening day home clash with Fulham, allied with a Gameweek 3 trip to Palace, has the potential for points but beyond that, a run of games which pits the Black Cats against Arsenal, Liverpool, United, City, Chelsea and Spurs in six of seven home fixtures between Gameweeks 4 and 15 is likely to dissuade even the most optimistic of Black Cats fan from investing from the off, allowing the little Italian time to settle before we consider splashing out on his services.

Now is not the time for Bony, his fixtures are horrendous and he may take time to settle. And Lucas will not get that many bonus points, certainly not enough to justify his inclusion.

Faye is the new Demel. Clocking up the points everytime you've left him on the bench. Time and time again.

I've HEARD that Bruce wants a 3-5-2, if that is the case then Faye will more than likely move forward into defensive midfield = OOP defender for £4.0!!! 😀

    aguero + kacaniklic (16.0) or berbatov + silva (16.5) ?

Second combo is more classy, and with the new bonus system it just might edge it - but the first one is a classic - one big hitter up front and a cheapie mid for rotation in 3-4-3.

I'd be surprised (and disappointed) if Gibson wasn't a starter, he keeps our team ticking. I also think Deulofeu will feature a lot, and I'm not convinced at all that we should be modelling our defence on Wigan's (although that doesn't mean Martinez won't).

If he plays 3 at the back, I think Osman's playing time will be dented more than Gibson's.

Lets be honest.. all the FPLM are posting their provisional teams. The majoirty of points are won based on captaincy. For me you need cover of the top teams and the top point scorers.

RVP/Bale/Hazard are alll essential and can rotate captaincy depending on GW. Would you not agree??

        I don't think he's right, necessarily...

But I do choose my team based on building around my captain options.

Points lost on duff captain choices are hard to recover with but with 10 other men you can often come to a similar solution or better (or worse, sure) in terms of points even if you don't select the same people.

      I disagree, especially this year.

With RVP being so high in price, that limits very heavily what else you can do with your team.

I'm probably still getting him, but that's because I'm too lazy to work out another strategy.

I have no idea who im going to put as captain. The only names coming to mind are RVP/Bale/Hazard.

Dont really wanna spend 14mil on RVP but i couldnt think of going a season without the top goal scorer and no UTD coverage.. probs opt with hazard and bring in benteke if he goes spurs. that means i wont need bale as much

        League goals...

        Tours
        First season - 9. Second season - 21

        Montpellier
        First season - 12. Second season - 21

        Arsenal
        First season - 11. Second season - ???

Ok lads, been toying all day with the most burning FPL issue out there, RvP. Tried to put all club loyalties aside and break it down into simple terms. Be glad to get some thoughts

        Pros
        Lead striker for defending champions
Possible Rooney departure makes him a better prospect
On all set-pieces and has pens
Top scorer in last 2 seasons (both in FPL terms and goal terms)
        Basically fixture proof
Less prone to rotation than the City strikers
Could be even more than 14.0 come GW4

        Cons
New manager - will this change how he is used?
Rooney leaving opens door for Hernandez - RvP is less of a prospect
Tough first 3 gameweeks compared to the likes of Aguero and Sturride
Could those 2 easily score more than him over that period
Could drop in price if he blanks in those first few weeks
He's 14.0, think of what you could do with that cash

It could be either, it depends on what happens after he leaves. if we stick to the one up top idea it's good as Rooney tended to lower RvP's PPG, if Chica gets starts then RvP probably isn't worth having as Chica will be lead striker, he can't play any other position

Seems clear to me that the most significant cons all have to do with whether RVP performs well early or not (I mean, any manager will use RVP to score goals, right?). So do you think he really is reliable? Do you think he will blank early? I don't. I think he will score goals right away, and if anything his price will rise. But you're right, if he comes out flat, it will have been a bad move.

Few contradictions in there for example he can't be fixture proof and then have the con of difficult fixtures.

The interesting thing with RVP is your either in or out..... If you don't have him and then decide to bring him in you're likely have to either WC or spend several weeks or take several 4point hits to shuffle players in order to accommodate him.

Can't see him going down in price.

The other huge plus for RVP is captain differential.
