Scout Report – Emanuele Giaccherini

Sunderland boss Paolo Di Canio’s summer spending spree continued yesterday with the capture of Emanuele Giaccherini from Italian champions Juventus. The 28-year-old arrives on Wearside in a four-year deal reported to be in the region of £6.5m and is the ninth new player to sign up at the Stadium of Light over the close season as Di Canio attempts to improve upon last term’s seventeenth place finish:

Upon completion of the deal, the new boy admitted to the Italian media that next year’s World Cup in Brazil played a key part in the move, as he looks to nail down a regular role on Wearside:

“I am full of enthusiasm and want to do good things as part of this adventure. I want to thank [Juventus] coach Antonio Conte. In the last two years he has given me the possibility to shine and make a name for myself here. A big part of my success is down to him. I thank him for that and will do so personally in the next few days. I have got into the national team now and I want to stay there. I will do everything for that. I hope this new adventure can push me to the World Cup. I will do my best playing in the English championship, which is the best in the world. Yesterday I spoke with Paolo Di Canio. For me, due to the fact that I don’t know the language, he will be a fundamental reference point, especially on the field.”

The History

Giaccherini’s career began in the 2003-04 campaign, where he notched 15 times for Cesena’s youth team. Over the next four seasons he was farmed out on loan to lower tier clubs Forli, Bellaria Igea and Pavia but his development seemed to stall, with just 13 goals scored over 87 matches for the three sides. Returning to his parent club in time for the 2008-09 season, Giaccherini helped Cesena rise through the divisions and eventually settle in Serie A, with 20 goals and four assists over 97 appearances.

His displays subsequently saw Juventus come calling in August 2011. Over his two seasons with the “Old Lady”, Giaccherini featured 40 times (with 21 of those appearances arriving off the bench) and produced four goals and six assists as the club won back-to-back league titles. He’s also featured 14 times for the Italian national side, scoring twice and providing a trio of assists.

The Prospects

A versatile campaigner, Giaccherini offers options on both wings in addition to through the middle. While the former Juventus man is more than capable of flourishing in “the hole”, Di Canio’s acquisition of Jozy Altidore suggests the Black Cats boss is looking to field a front two, with the US international expected to partner Steven Fletcher up top for Sunderland next season.

Standing just five foot five, Giaccherini is an archetypal wideman, with his trickery and directness in possession likely to torment many a full-back in the season ahead. Furthermore, he will bring a much-needed creativity to the Black Cats’ ranks – statistics show he provided a “key pass” at a rate superior to any Juventus team mate last term.

Certainly, regular game time seems secure for the new boy. Di Canio looked unconvinced by James McClean as a first-team option, with Giaccherini perhaps set to be handed the role on the Sunderland left, with either Adam Johnson or Stephane Sessegnon selected on the opposite flank. Yet to be added to any of the Fantasy games, a price of 7.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) looks on the cards, mirroring the cost of both Johnson and Sessegnon.

While there’s no doubt Giaccherini’s transfer is something of a coup for the Wearsiders, the initial schedule is likely to be enough of a deterrent to prevent any real bandwagon picking up in pace. Granted, an opening day home clash with Fulham, allied with a Gameweek 3 trip to Palace, has the potential for points but beyond that, a run of games which pits the Black Cats against Arsenal, Liverpool, United, City, Chelsea and Spurs in six of seven home fixtures between Gameweeks 4 and 15 is likely to dissuade even the most optimistic of Black Cats fan from investing from the off, allowing the little Italian time to settle before we consider splashing out on his services.

Does anyone think you could get away with playing Toure, Collins and Turner (nor) every week or would you want another 4.5er to rotate with the latter 2?

Toure? What makes you think he will be first choice?

I definitely wouldn't fancy playing Turner and Collins every week, personally.

well, I don;t think BR fancies Skrtel very much, or he wouldn't have brought Carragher back in. So unless Pool sign another cb I think he will be first choice, I'd be happier to play him every week then I would Coleman.

I might have go with Amorebeita. Your rotation with that pair ends after GW2 so I'm left with Fulham or Saints.

Too much of a risk for me at the moment, don't want to be worrying about using a transfer to fix up a budget defender early doors.

      How nailed on is Toure?

If Toure plays he could be a constant in your side, Collins has a good run of fixtures so could also be fixture proof for the first few gameweeks. I'd get Clyne/Shaw as Southampton rotate well with both Norwich and West Ham.

    A) Nolan + Ben Arfa

    OR

    B) Snodgrass + Mirallas

Option B looks like the preferred one on here, but having a closer look at the fixtures and comparing them, A *could easily* outscore B, IMO. Thoughts?

A could but I would still go for B.

Nolan's returns are dependent on Carroll playing, and Ben Arfa has not had a great season being injured/out of form. Add to that Newcastle's quality and I think it becomes quite clear

Nolan was great at the start of last season without Carroll too. I don't see his returns being hindered by the absence of Carroll. It's a myth. Agree on Ben-Arfa. He's more like a flash in the pan, but could well be worth it. Would prefer to have Mirallas over him, but I'm 0.5 short for that. Cheers!

Trouble is the team changed with the introduction of Carroll and from that point on I believe Nolan did hinder, a lot of stats back this up I believe. But as always I say go with your gut!

HBA is next best choice along with Snoddy after Mirallas

      C) Pienaar + HBA could also work.

Not seeing much love for Newcastle on here, but I've certainly liked Ben Arfa, Cabaye, Sissoko before as prospects -- Gouffran showed some spark at the end of the season as well. Wondering if the front office madness is playing a part in their lack of popularity so far.

Latest iteration with some serious rotation going down in defence. Thoughts?

    Boruc - Davis

    Merts - (Turner - Collins) ( Riether - Clyne )

    Bale - Silva - Hazard - Lampard - Thomas

    Giroud - Sturridge - Kone

Is it fair to assume that when a new manager joins a club that they will adopt their own system as opposed to sticking with the club's previous one?

    For example:

Is Martinez nailed on to adopt the 3-4-3 policy he used at Wigan instead of the 4-4-1-1 system that proved so successful for the Toffees last season?

Is Pellegrini going to use the system that saw Isco shine at Malaga by playing Silva in the hole?

General concensus seems to be that both managers will adopt their preferred strategies, and ultimately as far as I'm concerned, getting the likes of Coleman and Silva will be entirely dependant on these changes. I guess we'll get a clearer view when we get deeper into the pre-season period.

Can't understand the "if transfered to Spurs" line with Benteke...Sure the move would increase his appeal even more but the man is nailed on at Villa and returned 19 goals there last season, even though they were one of the worst teams in the prem....Hardly any serious players bought him last season even though he started at 6.5 and was nothing short of a goal machine from mid Dec onwards...

I suppose I'm betting on Cornelius as an individual, rather than pert of that team. You're right though it is a concern. As for Murray, though, I'm afraid he's out till December or something; which does make Gayle an option though.

Ahh, didn't know that, cheers for the heads up! If Benteke gets the move from Villa surely Helenius is worth a shout also. Not saying he'll fill Bentekes boots by any means but he could get more chances than the promoted sides.

Yeah him too. Some even think Maynard will get a chance up front for Cardiff...and he's only 4.5m!

That extra million would go a long way in my team! Might just take a punt on him 🙂

      Yeah Cornelius as Reedy says.

Considering Helenius for the DGW, although the fixtures are poor

    How does this look?

    (Davis) / Mignolet
    Clyne / Coleman / Zabaleta / (Turner) / (Chester)
    Bale / Hazard / Walcott / Snodgrass / Silva
    Rodriguez / Sturridge / (Murray)

People in Brackets are on the bench and will probably change for people the same price 🙂

Bit light upfront but Midfield makes up for that.

Need to wait if Migs is nailed on before making decision.

Rest looks good! I like Rodriguez in there, great value

More often than not. I played 3-5-2 a lot last year though to decent success.

I also tend to play 3-5-2 as you get more points for a midfielder goal 🙂

Why is everyone having an orgasm for Giroud ... even allowing for todays hatrick.

Also why does Coutinho in such a high percentage of teams. - He is 9.0 after all

Note I did I have both at the end of last season

      A) Giroud is 1m cheaper than Theo and is still, as of now, the only decent striker in Arsenal's midst.

      B) Coutinho enjoyed a fantastic end to last season and potentially without Suarez provides Liverpool with their main creative outlet even though the identically priced Gerrard has a "pretty solid" track record in this game.

    Question for members.

Would anyone know how to develop a stat table which would filter by bonus points under the new system using last year's data?
