Scout Report – Emanuele Giaccherini

Sunderland boss Paolo Di Canio’s summer spending spree continued yesterday with the capture of Emanuele Giaccherini from Italian champions Juventus. The 28-year-old arrives on Wearside in a four-year deal reported to be in the region of £6.5m and is the ninth new player to sign up at the Stadium of Light over the close season as Di Canio attempts to improve upon last term’s seventeenth place finish:

Upon completion of the deal, the new boy admitted to the Italian media that next year’s World Cup in Brazil played a key part in the move, as he looks to nail down a regular role on Wearside:

“I am full of enthusiasm and want to do good things as part of this adventure. I want to thank [Juventus] coach Antonio Conte. In the last two years he has given me the possibility to shine and make a name for myself here. A big part of my success is down to him. I thank him for that and will do so personally in the next few days. I have got into the national team now and I want to stay there. I will do everything for that. I hope this new adventure can push me to the World Cup. I will do my best playing in the English championship, which is the best in the world. Yesterday I spoke with Paolo Di Canio. For me, due to the fact that I don’t know the language, he will be a fundamental reference point, especially on the field.”

The History

Giaccherini’s career began in the 2003-04 campaign, where he notched 15 times for Cesena’s youth team. Over the next four seasons he was farmed out on loan to lower tier clubs Forli, Bellaria Igea and Pavia but his development seemed to stall, with just 13 goals scored over 87 matches for the three sides. Returning to his parent club in time for the 2008-09 season, Giaccherini helped Cesena rise through the divisions and eventually settle in Serie A, with 20 goals and four assists over 97 appearances.

His displays subsequently saw Juventus come calling in August 2011. Over his two seasons with the “Old Lady”, Giaccherini featured 40 times (with 21 of those appearances arriving off the bench) and produced four goals and six assists as the club won back-to-back league titles. He’s also featured 14 times for the Italian national side, scoring twice and providing a trio of assists.

The Prospects

A versatile campaigner, Giaccherini offers options on both wings in addition to through the middle. While the former Juventus man is more than capable of flourishing in “the hole”, Di Canio’s acquisition of Jozy Altidore suggests the Black Cats boss is looking to field a front two, with the US international expected to partner Steven Fletcher up top for Sunderland next season.

Standing just five foot five, Giaccherini is an archetypal wideman, with his trickery and directness in possession likely to torment many a full-back in the season ahead. Furthermore, he will bring a much-needed creativity to the Black Cats’ ranks – statistics show he provided a “key pass” at a rate superior to any Juventus team mate last term.

Certainly, regular game time seems secure for the new boy. Di Canio looked unconvinced by James McClean as a first-team option, with Giaccherini perhaps set to be handed the role on the Sunderland left, with either Adam Johnson or Stephane Sessegnon selected on the opposite flank. Yet to be added to any of the Fantasy games, a price of 7.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) looks on the cards, mirroring the cost of both Johnson and Sessegnon.

While there’s no doubt Giaccherini’s transfer is something of a coup for the Wearsiders, the initial schedule is likely to be enough of a deterrent to prevent any real bandwagon picking up in pace. Granted, an opening day home clash with Fulham, allied with a Gameweek 3 trip to Palace, has the potential for points but beyond that, a run of games which pits the Black Cats against Arsenal, Liverpool, United, City, Chelsea and Spurs in six of seven home fixtures between Gameweeks 4 and 15 is likely to dissuade even the most optimistic of Black Cats fan from investing from the off, allowing the little Italian time to settle before we consider splashing out on his services.

Just made my new team and here's my first draft:

    Mignolet Marshall
    Evans Azpil Collins Clyne Chester
Hazard Walcott Mirallas De Guzman Whittingham
    Aguero Sturridge Bony

I purposely have not been on FFS until now so I won't be influenced by other RMTs. Really struggling to fit RVP and Bale in but feel kind of exposed without them. Any glaring shortcomings here?

I agree it's tricky to fit RVP and Bale in, but surely you can fit one of them in?

Funny that I asked below if anyone had tried to make one without Bale and RVP 😀

Interesting structure although not the biggest fan of having both De Guz and Whittingham, that's just me. Liking the forward line though and defence seems decent too.

Yeah, I know I'm just going to buckle and make a way to get either Bale or RVP in. They're just too good and consistent to leave out but dear Lord they're pricey this year, especially RVP 🙁

Well RVP isn't coming into my team. A point score of 300 is needed to justify 14 million which he didn't get. Bale I will consider of course. Just toying with the idea of not having either.

Surely fitting Bale in at least is possible? I'd downgrade the defence (having both Evans and Azpi is pricey). I think Bale, if he stays, is an absolute must.

You might as well build a team with 9 promoted team players, or only Dutch players or something.

It's an interesting challenge, but it's not going to win anything.

Well always good to be looking at other options. For example Aguero at 11 million is a steal because I don't expect a freak injury to destroy his season again. Could easily be top goal scorer. Stuff like that.

It'd be a shame if he wasn't given opportunities, because he clearly is/is developing into a great player. If Rooney goes, I can see Torres going and Lukaku being back-up. If Rooney doesn't sign, I think Lukaku and Torres will alternate, and unless Torres rediscovers his old form somehow, Lukaku will become 1st choice.

I would have thought that Mata + £10m for Rooney would be good business. There could be some way to run with this one - maybe Utd are simly holding out for a little more, because it's very difficult to see Rooney staying at Old Trafford AND playing playing with his old zest.

Needs more work, but not crazy to go in this direction IMO.

Looks decent. Very similar to what I have at the moment.

The problem comes trying to put one more big boy in, like Hazard or Walcott, and sacrifices need to be made.

If you're going with RVP and Bale, I don't think you can also have Ivanovic and Zabaleta - it leaves your midfield too light. I also wouldn't count on Giroud being 1st choice come August.

Negredo has a good goal ratio in the last few years.

      2007–2009 Almería 70 appearances (32 goals)
      2009– Sevilla 139 appearances (70 goals )

10m to 11m FPL price likely I reckon.

The only downside (and it is a Major one) is that you willl be left without a consistent (C) choice each week. If you could possibly nail the (C) decision each week with that squad, i reckon you would do quite well

As defenders are less likely to be substituted mid way through a game has anyone thought of having a couple of cheap defenders from some top teams that are likely to get games such as Jenkinson and Caulker?

My thinking is as long as your other 3 defenders are definite starters then if one of these cheapies don't start they are less likely to come on as sub unlike midfielders or forwards.

    Toying with:

    Coleman | Jenkinson | Caulker | Clyne | Parr

Think I still need some convincing of it myself however.

Yes which is exactly the point I make in my post.

Take the risk of rotation to cash in on cheap defenders that will have a high chance of a CS when they play.

When they don't start the probably won't come on as a sub and so one of your other nailed on defenders comes in.

Saves money to be spent elsewhere while also catching a few of those CS's.

I've thought like this in the past... But it doesn't really work - same reason having a non-playing bench doesn't work. You need your bench to play, and you need your starting 11 to play. And chances are that they're not first choice for a reason - so you miss out on the clean sheets, and then they concede in the games that they play.

Much better spending that money on someone from a lesser team who plays every game.

You're going to end up with Clyne and Parr having to play even in games where you'd never choose them to play.

I'm not a Utd fan, but if I was in charge with that squad I think my front 6 would be:
      Carrick-Cleverley

      Nani Kagawa Zaha

      RVP

I'd be amazed if that was still the case a month from now though. I think it's absolutely imperative that Kagawa is given a star role this season, he was wasted last year.
