Fantasy Premier League – Player List Analysis – Mid-Price Defenders

We roll out our third article on this season’s Fantasy Premier League (FPL) player list this afternoon. Having assessed the Goalkeepers and Budget Defenders, we now cast an eye over the mid-price backline options, focussing on those players in the 5.0 to 5.5 bracket.

FPL’s decision to price Arsenal’s defence under 6.0 looks to offer Fantasy managers strong value next season. The Gunners conceded just 37 times in 2012/13 – the second best backline in the league – with Per Mertesacker once again looking the most secure option under Arsene Wenger. The German registered 135 points last season and with three goals to his name, seems the Gunners’ first-choice central defender; he would have ended last term as fourth highest defender in the new Bonus Points System, had it been implemented. Laurent Koscielny may transpire to be a viable alternative, though – he ousted Thomas Vermaelen from the picture as the season unfolded and scored twice in 20 starts over an injury-hit season. Although Wenger still looks to have faith in Bacary Sagna as a first-choice right-back, question marks hang over the other side of the Arsenal defence, with neither Kieran Gibbs or Nacho Monreal assured of starts.

Two goals and four assists sum up Matt Lowton’s attacking potential for Villa but with cheaper alternatives in Paul Lambert’s backline, it’s difficult to justify splashing the cash (5.0) on the raiding right-back, bearing in mind his side kept a mere five clean sheets in 2012/13. Seamus Coleman has the potential to be one of the bargains of the season under new Everton boss Roberto Martinez. If, as expected, he’s utilised on the right of midfield in a 3-4-3, the 5.0 priced Republic of Ireland international will be snapped up for his attacking potential alone and should be a highly sought-after Fantasy commodity in 2013/14. Staying on the subject of right-backs, Fulham’s Sascha Riether will be looking to replicate a debut season at the Cottage which harvested a goal and six assists. At 5.0, though, he is less friendly on the budget than team mate Fernando Amorebieta, at 4.5.

Jamie Carragher’s retirement is likely to afford Fantasy managers a strong mid-price Liverpool alternative next time out. Both Kolo Toure (5.0) and Martin Skrtel (5.5) are vying for the role alongside Daniel Agger – if the Ivorian gets the nod, he’ll be snapped up by Fantasy managers aplenty as a route into a backline that registered 16 clean sheets last season. Bearing in mind he’d also be cheaper than both Liverpool’s keepers and Toure has the potential to be a significant asset over 2013/14 if he forces his way past Skrtel in the Reds’ pecking order.

Matija Nastasic remains under the 6.0 mark at City. The young Serbian has been priced at 5.5 and is seen as the ideal partner for Vincent Kompany in Manuel Pellegrini’s defence – the new manager’s intentions are yet unclear, though, and with a more expansive style of play expected, City may struggle to deliver the same level of resilience which has produced 18, 17 and 18 clean sheets over the previous three seasons. The likes of Micah Richards and Joleon Lescott are similarly priced but may struggle for regular game time by comparison, with Nastasic looking the most secure of City’s mid-price options under the Chilean.

Over at Old Trafford, both Rio Ferdinand and Jonny Evans will set you back 5.5 but, again, there remains uncertainty over David Moyes’ preferred starters at the back for United. Evans produced three goals and a pair of assists in just 23 appearances last time out, though, and if he can finally cement a role as a regular under the new regime, the Northern Ireland centre-half has the attacking edge over his team-mate.

With a goal and four assists to his name last season, Davide Santon was the most attacking of any Newcastle defender. If he can mirror his 2012/13 displays, the Italian looks the pick of Newcastle’s 5.0 priced defenders but with cheaper options elsewhere in Alan Pardew’s back-four, the Italian could struggle for our attentions. Certainly, there’s no doubting the ability of Mathieu Debuchy, who’ll be looking to improve upon a return of a single assists in 14 appearances since joining up at St James’ Park in January.

Seb Bassong and Russell Martin will both set you back 5.0 as a route into a Norwich defence that produced 10 clean sheets in the season gone by. While Bassong looks nailed-on at centre-half, with Steven Whittaker providing competition for Martin’s right-back berth, Michael Turner’s 4.5 price tag plays a part in how we assess the Canaries. Considering all three notched three times last term, Turner looks the best value of the trio.

The Stoke defence all come in at mid-price after a season which saw them concede just 45 times – only two more goals against than United. With Tony Pulis gone, however, there’s a feeling they will struggle to keep out their opponents and as new boss Mark Hughes prepares to go on the attack, the Potters may not offer the same value we’ve come to expect. New boy Erik Pieters (5.0) will be tasked with bombing forward down the left and is cheaper than central defensive pairing Robert Huth and Ryan Shawcross, at 5.5 apiece.

Angel Rangel’s three goals and an assist in 2012/13 have persuaded FPL to elevate the Swansea right-back to 5.5 – the priciest option of any in Michael Laudrup’ backline. Ashley Williams and Chico should guarantee starts in the centre of defence at 5.0 apiece. Intriguingly, Williams’ displays would have seen him finish as second top defender (and fourth overall) in the new Bonus Points System, were it implemented last season – the fact he failed to produce any goals or assists highlights its not all about attacking contribution. Ben Davies’ game time looks anything but secure now that Neil Taylor is back in contention. With Michel Vorm similarly priced between the sticks, the Dutchman’s save point potential and propensity for stopping spot-kicks may well make him the best Swansea option but with United Spurs and Liverpool in the opening four Gameweeks, faith in the Swans defence is understandably diminished from the off.

Fit-again Younes Kaboul is the most intriguing option at the back for Tottenham. Coming in at 5.0, the Frenchman started Gameweek 1 last year but failed to play again due to injury – he is favourite to get the nod as Jan Vertonghen’s central defensive partner, with his pace crucial to Spurs’ high defensive line, though there’s the possibility Andre Villas-Boas may utilise rotate Michael Dawson and Steve Caulker (both 5.0) in order to maintain the trio’s fitness. Benoit Assou-Ekotto (5.5) may remain in the driving seat for the left-back role – the Cameroon international has competition from Danny Rose but FPL’s decision to classify the latter as a midfielder virtually kills his Fantasy appeal.

Gareth McAuley is the priciest option at the back for West Brom. The centre-half comes in at 5.5 after racking up three goals and three assists last season but despite playing six more games than Ben Foster, outscored the keeper by just eight points in FPL. Foster, at 5.0, is likely to prove better value due to save points, while the likes of Liam Ridgewell and Jonas Olsson also mirror the keeper’s cost. At West Ham, Joey O’Brien has rocketed from 4.0 to 5.5 this season – the most expensive defender on offer under Sam Allardyce. Razvan Rat, at 5.0, looks more secure at left-back but with James Collins offering a 4.5 priced route into a backline with 11 clean sheets in 2012/13, many may be content with the former Villa man instead.

    Foster Boruc
    Mertesacker Coleman Collins Turner _______

Kinda fixed on these 6 in my defense.. as i think all 6 defenses will have a good year. Now, for that final spot do i go cheap with a 4 mill defender or go for Clyne/Amorebieta for value? think my defensive is kinda expensive as it is atm

Depending on developments: Foster > Mig/Szczesney (and maybe Mert > Toure depending which you get), Boruc > £4m, Coleman > Clyne/Shaw

      Leaves you with:

A very decent keeper to start every week

A solid defender to start every week

A mid price defender with great opening fixtures to start most weeks until his fixtures turn/something better arrises (Collins)

Nor and Sot rotating pair coming in at £9m with good combined fixtures

      A £4m bench warmer.

      Total spent:

      31.5m = cheap as chips

nice.. only thing is that 4.0 non playing GK could come back to bite me.. and gettin rid of coleman seems folly(and i did read the post about him yesterday 🙂 ). i remember discounting Alexander Graham couple years ago and regretting it. I do agree that it makes much more sense though. at present if i add clyne to that my total will be 33.5!! that is a bit much i agree.. how's your defense shaping up? Sooo many bargains i'm finding impossible to ignore

Basically something like what I wrote there, but I'm waiting until closer to the start before really sorting my team out

Manone Boruc is an alternative, but that means I probably won't have Clyne/Shaw to rotate with Turner and I don't want to go down the Ruddy/Boruc route when I can get a Arsenal/Pool keeper for that price.

Given that the players prices are based on previous performance I took a look at betfair odds for the winning team without the top 6 ie not including Man c Chelsea Man u Liverppool Arsenal and Tottenham , then compared them with where they finished last season.

The team expected to improve the most based on their current odds are Southampton , they are actually second favourites ahead of teams like Swansea and WBA. This points to their assets being undervalued , a fact many fantasy managers already appear to be realising

I was surprised to see Everton the favourites to finish 6th if I can lay them for under 4.00 I will be opposing them bigtime , there just too much uncertainty surrounding them at the moment ,
Newcastle also coming in for market support , im not keen on them either . Swansea look better and appear to be undersupported in the market.

From a fantasy perspective those looking for stocking fillers should not feel too bad if they select three Southampton players , they have decent fixtures and the mearket expects them to improve on last season

It just feels so wrong to go with three saints players. Even though there shouldn't be any fear in doubling up in defence and rotating with others.

I'd be looking at the same but can't bring myself to double up on Saints defence. Although I do like Clyne as a prospect and I really should just get over it and bring him in. But in saying that there is always a risk when you double up in defence.

Doesn't really interfere with the main core of your squad. Boruc and Clyne are both 4.5, so no harm having both.

I agree. I'm set on Foster & Boruc. I think I'll most probably double up, and get Clyne (since the Saints rotate the best by miles in 5-man 'uber' defensive rotations), and I like the look of Lambert at £7.5m.

Do you not think Lambert is worth the extra £1.5m compared to JRod?

I had Lambert the majority of last season, and loved him. He's just so consistent.

    a) Snod & Giroud
    b) Silva & Anelka

    Foster, Boruc
    Terry, Zaba, Collins, Alcaraz, Chester
    Bale, Hazard, Lampard, xxx, Thomas
    Aguero, xxx, JRod

I would suggest starting with just Terry, downgrading Zaba to a 4.5 (Turner). That will give you more funds to play around.

You can always swap Terry to Zab afterword. Two heavies at the back ain't the best idea.

Yeah, I normally agree that cheapies at the back is the way to go. But, given I plan to WC after GW3, Zaba has 3 great fixtures up first, and Terry most likely has a DGW. Hmmm.

Jovetic and Negredo news has put me off of Aguero for now...reverted to a 3-5-2 and I actually like the look of it.

    Mannone Boruc
    Mertesacker Collins Clyne Turner Chester
    Bale Hazard Walcott Silva Mirallas
    Sturridge Rodriguez 5.0*
    +0.5

    *looking at Gayle/Cornelius/Anelka/Halanius/Aluko
Light up top, but not too many options I like...Benteke to Spurs and a price tag of 10.0 or less for Negredo would change things though.

    Any thoughts DZ?

You shouldn't build a squad planning future transfers. I think you should build a team which will require the least amount of transfers/ tinkering the first 2-3 GWs.

If you start with a team for with planned transfers, you'll be in trouble.

Very solid team, I like it a lot.

I'd consider Mig and a £4m keeper at the back (depending on developments), which will only cost you 0.5m more.

I'd also consider downgrading either Silva or Mirallas from your midfield, giving you more options for your striker. You can always bring the player in when you sell Hazard in GW3.

I like your plan.. Those 5 in midfield(and your defense mostly) are reliable players who will produce. At the start of the season everythin is up in the air so it's a good plan to have a backbone of players you know wont have to be taken out unless injured. Once the season underway and th budget mids and forwards show themselves you can swap them out at your own pace. i like it(And i like Gayle.. gonna be immense until murray returns)

I'm still uncertain about City at the moment. Even so, I have Aguero in my team for now. I don't have Silva but he is viable if things get too confusing up front. I don't have a strong position on the issue at the moment.

      I really don't see that I've happening.

Fergie never sold players to rivals, I doubt if Moyes would break that trend.

Fergie never really had a major issue with any players.

Rooney wants out, if the right price is put on the table, I don't think United will refuse.

Similar what happened to Arsenal with RVP. Of course we didn't want to sell to rival club but money talks.

I agree with Acqua. But, I'm not 100% certain I'd bring in Rooney without DGW 1 (because there will be a blank in GW 3 (so it would be him or Hazard. Don't want 2 for the 1st 3 weeks, if I can help it. It would force you into an early transfer.), but he's the first name on my team sheet if there is a DGW.

As a striker myself, although an amateur, playing against your former teammates gives the striker the upper hand on the opponent's defense. Rooney could run riot.

I scored 5 goals when playing against my former team. It was like a game in the park, playing against my mates.

Although, obviously it won't be to the same extent, I would still fancy Rooney to have a blinder.

                Is it-

When you win the Champions league you play Uefa Super cup AND FIFA Club World Cup

When you win the UEFA League you just play UEFA Super Cup

I am not sure Bellamy is really going to do much, though I do like the punt on him. I think I am going with the 2 budget midfield/rotation as well. I am not a fan of doubling up on attack, and if Benteke moves to Spurs, I'd not have him at all with Bale in my team already. Looks good otherwise.

it's just that they all seem over priced and De Gea is from Man U,
so i'm in need of maybe a walcott or Giroud or maybe even Augero (although the signings of Jovetic and Negredo are concerning)

        Thanks for the input,

Jakupovic is one of only 2 keepers and McGreagor is a new signing? I'd think he's the most likely of 4m to play,

unless perhaps i signed Boruc or a promoted club GK for 4.5M?

and why wouldn't you like Ramirez? 6mil appears to be a steal and @ 5.5M and listed as a mid Bellamy looks to be a nice pick up,

if you were to suggest replacements for all 3 spots in particular the mids (keep in mind i have 3.5M in the bank)

Thanks, all 3 are viable options! But, i kind of think with all the new signings for Nowrich perhaps Snodgrass might be a little less prolific, Mirallas is part of 4 or 5 decent attacking minded Mid/fwds at everton in a changing system and whilst i love his talent i wouldn't punt on him.

Nolan is a bit old and i wouldn't rather him value wise over Bellamy or Rameriz

I'll definitely tinker around with possibilities with those players though! Thanks again

Thanks, I didn't know that. I have somehow never owned Lambert, he was too consistent as well. Lambert at 7.5 could be amazing, so going Lambert over JRod the way? Spares me some cash too which I can invest in defense and mid. Worked out the rotation between Hull and Palace, looks good for the first 7 at least.

            Why do you say this?

Southampton have better fixtures. And Lambert scored more points last season?

I like Lambert! And I think he's definitely worth the extra £1.5m over JRod.

Lambert was so consistent last season! I love him! 😉

I believe Lambert will be on the decline, his age will start to catch up with him. Berbatov is an outstanding player and his stats are out of place in that price bracket and the Fulham team. According to the members ticker, Fulham have the second best fixtures over the next 9 games.

Best team I've seen posted here. Perhaps I say this because it has quite a lot of similarities with my team ATM ;).

I think I would spend the extra 0.5 and get Foster over Mannone (if possible).

And I'm curious, why Brady over Koren?
And, who is the best 4.0 defender from Palace & Hull?

I think its between Ward and Parr. Delaney got 3 goals last season though,so he's the best defender for them FPL wise I think. But I can't bring myself to get a 4.5 million defender from Palace when there could be so many options at the back with just 1 more million extra invested. I am not sure about Hull though. Will have to look into it, stick around. 😉

And about going Brady over Koren, even I don't know that. 😛

Just looked into it, 9 goals for Koren and 4 for Brady. 1 penalty each. Well.. Back to the drawing board. 😛

Read somewhere that Koren might be the preferred penalty taker. He took the penalty last season while Brady was on the pitch, and Brady took it when Koren was not on the pitch. Looked around for stats and I do find Koren to be better than Brady in terms of goals and positioning.

I think they'll play 3 at the back:

Davies; Figueroa and I reckon Chester is most likely.

But that 3rd position is a real toss-up.

I've heard that the pace of the Premier League is too much for Faye, and hence Chester is more likely to take up the 3rd centre back place (if they play 3 at the back).

If they play with a back 4, Figueroa may take up the left back role, with Davies and Chester as the centre halves.

With Figueroa and Curtis Davies both as new signings, and the uncertainty of whether they'll play 3 at the back (with wing backs) or a back 4, picking a 4.0 Hull defender is a bit of guess work ATM. I need to do more research!

Koren is the #1 penalty taker (Brady is #2). Not certain about free-kicks and corners, but I think Koren is #1 and Brady #2 there as well (which is backed up by this - http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/premiership-set-piece-takers/).

I would think Brady is more guaranteed game time, but Koren is captain, and played 42 league games last season, so you'd think he's guaranteed enough, especially for the start of the season. So that shouldn't be an issue.

Plus, Koren scored 9 goals (compared to Brady's 4), and what makes him even more appealing is that only 1 of the goals was a penalty! [Unlike Noble last season who scored 10 or so in the Championship, but about 7 were pens (can't remember the figures, but similar to those).]

Although, Brady got 13 assists. Not sure how many Koren got. All I know is that he got less than 10 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2012%E2%80%9313_Football_League_Championship#Assists)

Based on all of the above, I prefer Koren, simply because he's on pens.

      I don't rate Brady,
I think Lambert is over priced and would prefer J.Rod,
I also believe that RVP might begin to have diminishing returns (that's not to say he won't be awesome) and is a bit to steep at 14M,

I love the Coleman and Clyne picks
I also like the Mannone and Boruc rotation idea
RvW is unproven but i like it,

very decent team, particuarly strong considering RVP+Bale+Walcott and Hazard!

Thanks, I think I'll go Koren over Brady. RVP might have diminishing returns, but I wouldn't mind slapping the armband on him at all. Need 2 captain materials and got the best in my team. Suffered for not having RVP last seasno, went down from 200 to 4k in a matter of 10 weeks. 😛

I thought I needed a differential, so put in RvW for that case, has good fixtures in the beginning too.

I can't see any DGWS in August, and for several reasons:
    - Che is full of players who played in the Conf Cup (Mata, Luiz, Oscar, Azpi...) and those players won't be fully ready in less than one month. Even Hazard and Terry had fitness issues and this summer can not be too long for them
    - JM is in the market and for a bargain. Call it Roon or someone else, the Che squad is likely to change in August
    - Fixtures are tough and JM wants full fit players. No need for another game that soon

    morning all. quick view -

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/23353195

this comment from mourinho warning players that being second choice will damage their hopes of being included in a World Cup squad. Everyone's put 2 + 2 together to think he's tralking about Rooney.

Does anyone else think its a hidden message for Torres (Possibly Ba, but more the 175kish a week Torres). Jose wants Rooney, we're keeping Lukaku. That makes Torres / Ba competing for third in the pecking order.

A pecking order which involves one striker lead the line, not 2 like some clubs. Do you not think its telling Torres/Ba that if a new striker comes they need to realise, they're out the door whether they like it or not?

    Coleman and Miralles.

Getting alot of support on here but with the proposed 3-5-2 where will they actually play?

Classic 3-5-2 is 3 center backs
2 'wing backs' Guessing Pieenar, Baines, Coleman. Osman? Is there where we see Miralles as a winger?
3 in the middle. Can all be sitters, can have 2 sitters one attacking. Fellani, Osman, Gibson. Miralles here as the attacking one?
2 forwards. Kone has to be 1. Miralles right up here supporting? got Jelavic and Deulofu too.

I honestly have no answers but the Pieenar and Baines thing is genuinely confusing. Any Toffees out there?

    Alright? 3 things -
1 - Is anyone looking at Bellamy? Good price at 5.5 and sure to bring in some goals from Midfield, and get a regular game. He's not appearing in many teams I've seen.
2 - No one fancying Baines - 7.5 too much?
    3. Is any one else tempted by Deulofeu? I reckon Martinez will throw him on early, and if he gets a goal or two he's going through the roof - why not snap him up early at 6 to reap the rewards?

Cheers. Loving this already. No work done in last 3 hours now.

Any thoughts? 0.5 in the bank. Still undecided whether I need a bale & RVP set up tbh

With city buying two new strikers , is there going to be a swing away from Aguero back to RVP?

I think he is far too expensive, last season wasn't too bad as at least you always had a decent captain choice but now Bale can fill that void.

The only players that should be over 13 million are Henry and C.Ronaldo and possibly Lampard back in the day!

Have always found Bale a very unreliable capt . He went on that amzing streak last season but people forget the string of two pointers beforehand

Besides GW1-3 he never went more than 2 blanks in a row.

I made the same comment last season that Bale was either famine or feast, so not a great choice for captain. I think that his scores in the next five gameweeks after my comment made me look a bit of a fool.

although if Man Utd get Cesc then I might just put Cesc/RvP in my team and watch the points roll in

Fabregas deal is off - he doesn't want to leave Barcelona so that's not going to happen sadly...

City strengthened on the wing this window with Navas. So I think Milner will get even less game time than last season.
