Scout Report – Nacer Chadli

Tottenham confirmed their second deal of the summer transfer window on Sunday, with the acquisition of Nacer Chadli from Dutch club FC Twente. The versatile 23-year-old Belgian joins up at White Hart Lane on a five-year contract for a fee in the region of £7m and follows Paulinho to the club, as Andre Villas-Boas bolsters his midfield options for the season ahead.

The Spurs boss was clearly delighted to announce the deal yesterday, with the new boy already joining his team mates for training ahead of tomorrow’s Barclays Asia Trophy match against Sunderland in Hong Kong:

“Nacer Chadli is a player that we have been following for quite some time and we managed to strike the deal in these last days. So we’re pretty happy. As a player he is extremely versatile, playing different positions up front. He has played with tremendous success on the left for Twente as a winger and as an attacker for Belgium.”

The History

Chadli’s youth career spanned across three Belgian clubs, including Standard Liege, but his big break arrived in 2007 courtesy of Dutch second division outfit AGOVV Apeldoorn. He spent a total of three seasons at the club and, having produced 11 goals and nine assists over 52 appearances in his first couple of years, stepped up a level with 17 goals and 11 assists from 37 games in 2009/10.

Snapped up by FC Twente in the summer of 2010, Chadli immediately became a key member of the first-team. His first two years at the club harvested 13 goals and 11 assists from 56 Eredivisie matches before he once again improved during his third season, with 12 goals and five assists from 26 games (including play-off matches). The Belgian also chipped in with six goals and six assists in 10 Europa League matches in 2012/13, a sign of his flourishing eye for goal. On the international stage, Chadli has turned out for his country on 14 occasions and has found the net twice.

The Prospects

Predominantly right-footed, Chadli’s adaptability means he can be fielded anywhere across the forward line, though his preferred position is on the left as an inverted winger, cutting inside onto his stronger foot. Standing six foot two, his strength, pace and trickery down the flank, allied with a penchant for a long shot, could well see the Belgian quickly nail down a starting role in Villas-Boas’ first-team.

Far more significantly, his acquisition could be key to how we assess Gareth Bale’s likely position in the season ahead. The signing of Paulinho earlier this summer had suggested Villas-Boas was primed to move to a 4-3-3 with the Welshman on the flank but it now seems more likely that Chadli’s arrival will ensure Bale remains in the central slot behind a lone forward in a 4-2-3-1. Villas-Boas has utilised the likes of Clint Dempsey, Gylfi Sigurdsson and Lewis Holtby on the left last term in order to play Bale in “the hole” but none of the trio offered the speed of Bale or, indeed, Aaron Lennon on the opposite flank – a problem for Villas-Boas, given how crucial the idea of quick transitions are to his tactical approach.

Yet to be added to the Fantasy games, it’s likely that Chadli will come in around the 7.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game – putting him on a par with Lennon and Dempsey, and just slightly more than Sigurdsson and Paulinho at 7.0 apiece. Providing Bale keeps the central role, the Welshman looks almost essential after racking up 14 sets of double figures last time out but a hugely enticing run of fixtures could also bring the Belgian into contention from the off. With Palace, Swansea, Norwich, Cardiff, West Ham, Villa and Hull in seven of the first nine Gameweeks, doubling up on the pair could be a viable tactic for those who feel the idea of “coverage” is somewhat over-rated.

I like the Aspas pick. I reckon he's nailed on while Suarez is suspended and LFC fixtures are good.
Toure will be back up if Rodgers signs a first choice CB and personally I think Nastasic AND Mert AND Coleman is 1m - 2m overspent in defence.
Maybe have a look at some cheaper rotating defenders, eg NOR/ SOU/ WH/ FUL

too much spent in the back. Get rid of Toure (expensive, old, unsure of his role atm) and Coleman (still unsure of role, Everton still should be waited on).

Try to upgrade Aspas to Sturridge, he's going to get 90 every match until Suarez returns and was in great form last season.

Look for Nolan, Snodgrass for Koren.

My initial instinct is certainly Hazard given how much Silva disappeared last year. But with Pellegrini's style, I wonder if Silva won't be a FPL monster this year, going way above his 9.0 tag. It's tough.

Coutinho has competition from Borini, Downing, Aspas, Alberto, Sterling, Assaidi and Henderson (all can play in a Rodgers front 3)
He's only 20 so burn-out is possible and he'll be looked after. Not saying he's not nailed on but do expect the odd surprising rest.

Have seen many posts about formation 3-4-3 vs 3-5-2.

    I looked at my last years FPL Data and found the following;

    Forwards Scored - 6.1 Pts/Game
    Mids Scored - 5.5 Pts/Game
    Def Scored - 3.89 Pts/Game

*The above does NOT incl (C) bonus
Owned RVP from GW3 I believe

Not sure what we can draw from the above....Does it mean that playing 3-4-3 is better? Is it easier to predict a forwards goal scoring potential?

I have always played 3-4-3, never bought in to the "Power 5"....will this season be different?

One other aspect about 3-4-3 is you are allowed to still pick up nice finds as the season moves along, particularly at Forward. Last year, we were able to hop around with Berbatov, Lambert, etc. based on form and fixtures. Now this year, those guys are still available along with some other (potentially) nice options such as Kone, RvW, Bony, Aspas, etc. all for a decent price.

    Hello. Horse here.
I usually use my wild card around GW4-5. At the moment I have a little more money in defence than most, 38m in fact, including keepers. This is due to opening fixtures and how I see things panning out.
With Chelsea having the defensive Mourinho, and Pelligrini loving attack I will lean towards Chelsea defenders, but not for the first few weeks. Having said that, with no disrespect to the opposition City face, they have easy opponents at first.
I have high hopes for Liverpool at the back so have doubled up and see Arsenal improving on last years efforts in defence. Fixtures look kind for West Ham and giving the new bps system I am investing in them. Norwich too have a good run (still talking rear guard), and see them keeping 3 cleanies in the first 6. Although Everton start their run with more aways I fancy Robles to play considering Martinez looks like he his favouring him. Is anyone else putting their proverbial eggs in a defensive basket to begin with or going with big hitting att mids and forwards?

Keen to hear thoughts on what folks are doing, at least to begin with.

    Horse

Jeez, I've spent 32m on my back 7 and I was worried that was too much!

38m does seem a bit excessive.

It is risky, but I made some bold moves last season and really worked. I got nervous and became more conservative as the season went on and dropped out of the top 10k. This time I'm just going with my know how. I hope for 36 points a week at the back including bps. Captains and consistent mids should do the rest.

Agree on spending a little more on CHE defenders. Hold you WC for March with the FA Cup DGW's you will not be sorry. Select a flexible team to start and take a hit or two if need be.

Sykes might get classified as a mid if they keep playing him off Hyde cause of our standard 4-2-3-1 formation. But he is in actual fact playing in a 4-4-2 tonight.

Early on he wasn't but he was after the first few weeks.

Rodriguez wasn't really ever the lone striker though, he was mostly played out wide cutting in or behind Lambert with Lambert sometimes dropping deeper and the 2 of them interchanging with Lallana. It will be interesting to see who they sign, but I don't think Rodriguez is in competition with Lambert...

Maybe, I watched the game today and he was the only good united player tbh
I reckon Valencia will play the harder games, as he is better defensivly (sry about the english, at defending).. 🙂

Last pre-season Rooney looked great. First game against Everton, he looked tired and unfit. Got to be wary of making any snap judgements at this time.

Dont really agree, Rooney looked fat and lazy all preseason last year...
But yes, I agree with you.. dont think Zaha is nailed on, but Im sure he improved his chances of starting so far in this preseason...

Kagawa was pretty decent, for the time he was on.
Young showed glimpses but no end product.

Think he could easily, sad to say but he's not exactly up against top opposition, Valencia has fallen back a lot and Nani is just annoying.

I can't see moyes playing zaha much this season. He'll be doing extra defending practice to get rid of any of that horrible flair he's got. Valencia is more of a moyes type player IMO.

What do u think about Jarvis? Why didnt he perform better last season? I really think he could be a great 5th midfielder this year with a nice schedule...

His crosses "should" be great for Carroll, and he should score 6-8 goals...
5,5 seems cheep for a player like Jarvis tbh, awful last season but before that pretty good.. nailed on, right?

Thoughts on this attempt to shoehorn RVP and Bale into the same team?

yep. too pricy, and we still don't know if he could played well in Martinez's reign. although his spot kicks duties are appealing. but just that for now. so everyone pick Coleman at the opposite side, with only priced £5.0, he looks safer 😛

What are your current planned double-ups?

    .
    Mine are currently:

    Mignolet & Toure
    Walcott & Giroud

They all seem such great value.

I've been waiting for him to do something for the last 2 years. I can't see him starting regularly at the mo. He can be superb going forward but his positional play is awful and he gives the ball away a lot. I hope he can break into the first team but I'm losing faith now. Well have to wait and see.
