Friendlies Round-Up – Monday

United end their tour of Asia with a comprehensive win as Jesse Lingard gets amongst the goals once again. Markus Rosenberg and Nicolas Anelka maintain their recent scoring form as West Brom pick up another victory, while Hull edge past Peterborough thanks to a long-range effort from Maynor Figueroa. Elsewhere, Steven Fletcher may miss the start of the season for Sunderland and Roberto Martinez talks up the prospects of Nikica Jelavic for the campaign ahead after the Croatian bagged a brace in a weekend win at Blackburn:

Kitchee 2 Man United 5
David Moyes rolled out a 4-3-3 formation for United’s final match in Asia yesterday afternoon. With Jonny Evans missing out due to an ankle injury, the likes of Chris Smalling, Michael Keane and Fabio were handed a starting berth in an experimental line-up at the back, while further up the field, Wilfried Zaha and Ashley Young took the flank roles on either side of Danny Welbeck. The latter opened the scoring with his third pre-season strike before Smalling and Fabio added a goal apiece before the break. Moyes made six changes over the course of the second period and saw two of his subs combine for the fourth after Alexander Buttner teed up Adnan Januzaj before Jesse Lingard grabbed the visitors’ final goal, taking his tally for the summer to four – more than any other United player.

Speaking to United TV after the match, Smalling revealed he was determined to nail down a regular role under the new manager after starting just 10 times in Sir Alex Ferguson’s final year in charge:

“Last season was a very frustrating one so it is nice to be involved with pre-season because I didn’t get that last time and I am feeling good. The more games, the better. It was nice to pop up with a goal too. But to be fair, I probably should have got a hat-trick. Hopefully, I will get more chances like that. I was waiting for it (the goal), I have been due one because I didn’t get too many last season. Hopefully, I will be able to get a few more this season and chip in a little more.”

Elsewhere, Moyes was given an injury boost after Nemanja Vidic, Nani and Antonio Valencia returned to action for a United XI against Crewe last night. The trio had failed to take part in the pre-season tour but are now stepping up their respective recoveries – Valencia played the full 90 minutes, while Vidic and Nani were afforded just over an hour apiece, with the latter notching both goals in a 2-0 win.

Peterborough 0 Hull 1
Steve Bruce’s side registered their first win in four attempts yesterday evening. The Tigers boss continued with a 3-5-2 and shifted Maynor Figueroa to the left of midfield, whilst drafting in his son, Alex, to join James Chester and Curtis Davies in the back-three – the former Wigan man vindicated his manager’s decision to move him to a more advanced berth by notching the only goal of the game with a spectacular 25-yeard strike. Danny Graham was partnered by Sone Aluko up top but failed to notch before making way in one of seven second-half changes by the visitors. From an offensive point of view, the Tigers are still struggling and have scored just twice in the last four games (with one coming from the spot), though Bruce’s side have registered three clean sheets across that quartet of fixtures.

West Brom 3 Atromitos 1
Steve Clarke made eight changes from the side that saw off Derby at the weekend. Yet again, the Baggies boss altered his starting formation and moved from 4-4-2 to 4-3-3, with Saido Berahino, Markus Rosenberg and Shane Long leading the line as Nicolas Anelka dropped to the bench. With his side a goal down at the break, the Baggies boss made just two alterations, sending on James Morrison and Anelka, and the latter needed just 10 minutes to bring the hosts level with his third goal in as many matches. Rosenberg continued his strong summer form by teeing up Berahino to fire the Baggies in front before scoring his side’s third, taking his tally to four over five pre-season friendlies, the highest scoring West Brom player of the summer so far.

While Clarke has been linked with moves for Scott Sinclair, Salomon Kalou and Matej Vydra as he looks to bolster his frontline, Rosenberg is certainly staking a claim for consideration and prior to the match, the Swede spoke of his determination to atone for a debut season which saw him fail to find the net once in the Premier League:

“I didn’t score too many times last season so I have to score a lot in this campaign. I had a tough time last year so it’s good to have a start like this and to start to score goals. I always knew I could score because I scored in every other country, but it’s still nice to bag a goal and to have a pre-season. I missed the pre-season last year and I think it will be good for me in the campaign to come. It is always the same, it doesn’t matter how much experience you get. In the back of your head you know you can score but you have to prove it to the fans and to the people here.”

In Other News
Reports yesterday suggest Steven Fletcher is losing the race to be ready in time for the start of the season. The Sunderland striker is still struggling from the ankle injury that forced him out towards the end of the previous campaign and may be sidelined until September – meaning he would miss a potentially prosperous opening run of three games against Fulham, Southampton and Palace. Fletcher’s absence would mean Paolo Di Canio is likely to retain a 4-4-1-1 formation for the kick-off, with Stephane Sessegnon tucked in behind Jozy Altidore, though the former Wolves man may struggle to pick up many investors upon his return, with the Black Cats’ schedule stiffening significantly from Gameweek 4 onwards.

Roberto Martinez has been singing the praises of Nikica Jelavic after the Croatian bagged a brace in Everton’s weekend win at Blackburn. Jelavic was named as a sub at Ewood Park as Martinez handed Arouna Kone the lone forward role in a 4-3-3 but he staked a claim for first-team inclusion after replacing the Ivorian at the break. Having notched just seven times in the season gone by, Jelavic appears to have slipped down the pecking order following Kone’s arrival but he may still have a significant role to play this term, judging by his manager’s comments:

“In modern football it’s a bit unfair to rely on a player to score you 20-25 goals if you don’t do the things well as a team, you’ll never get the striker in good positions. That’s what we’re starting to develop now; a team that can be strong enough off the ball and that can create enough chances for our strikers to take, but it’s not the moment to assess the players as yet. It’s the time to assess them in each individual exercise and see what sort of relationship we can put on the pitch. What we saw [on Saturday] was a Nikica Jelavic that has come back with a real intention of having a very strong season.”

Having reunited with Martinez following their time together at Wigan, Kone had initially appeared nailed-on for a starting berth for the Toffees. With 13% ownership in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), the Ivorian is the seventh most popular striker in the game at the moment but Jelavic’s form is certainly affording his new manager further options for the central forward role, suggesting wide men Kevin Mirallas and Steven Pienaar may be a little more secure as FPL out of position prospects in Martinez’s front three.

      2 problems for me:

      1. Double Southampton defence is a no-no for me. I doubt they will have improved much even with Wanyama as Yoshida is pretty average and Lovren needs to find his feet.

      2. Benching dilemmas. You've got a front 8 which can all viably start all games so it is hard to bench one of them and as a result you are wasting precious money which is even more important early on.

        Thanks Beavis.

        1. The Soton and WHU rotation is great so I dont mind going for it in the short term.

        2. I see what youre saying but with RVW Aspas and Morrison, i dont mind having to bench one of them. Where would you upgrade?

          1. I know the rotation is good but wouldn't pin my hopes on Southampton defence personally.

          2. Not sure really. I think you will struggle to get RVP/Bale in if one of them starts firing so I'd be looking to bring in a big hitter in the FW positions just so u can easily change with a 4pt hit perhaps or 2FT rather than needing to re-shift all your monies.

Don't like 2 SOT defenders though, Morrison, and no RVP. RVW, i have no idea about.

No because Man City play MNF so he has 2 days extra recovery to Mata.

there won't be villa bandwagons if they don't score any goals. even 2 for the week is pushing it and that's not going to be spread between 3 players. I get the logic in aiming for early bandwagons but more than one villa is overkill, and bale has as good a fixture week 1 as any so if he's there he's essential.

This was just for the DGW i presume? Lukaku really could outscore Benteke with just 90 against Hull. You then factor in a possible cameo appearance in the 2nd game, and the fact Benteke scored 1 goal in 10 games against the top 5 last season, and he just doesn't appeal as much.

Popular defensive rotation is Southampton and West Ham (Shaw/Clyne and Collins for example)

Midfield/Striker rotation is Crystal Palace and Hull City (seen a few teams with Gayle and Koren/Brady)

Mannone and Boruc have a good rotation for goalkeepers

Anelka and Rodriguez looks good too

      As for teams:

      Southampton/West Ham

      Southampton/Sunderland

      Norwich/Everton

      Norwich/Southampton

      Crystal Palace/Hull City

      Crystal Palace/Cardiff

      West Brom/Southampton

      Just some ideas 🙂

    Spurs: The Great Bale Out

Gareth Bale is going to go for big money to Real Madrid. So Wayne Rooney wants to leave. Tottenham Hotspur need strikers. This is what I think will happen.

For the 85 million pounds and Fabio Contreau and Angel Di Maria, then can buy rooney for about 60 million and also Roberto Soldado for around 20 million pounds.

Andre Villas Boas likes 4-3-3 so he'll play Nacer Chadli on the left wing cutting in, and Angel Di Maria on the right wing cutting in. They can play Roberto Soldado as the central striker. Wayne Rooney can be an attacking midfielder. Wayne Rooney could also play as a striker in any of the front three and if this happens then Paulinho will be the attacking midfielder.

If Tottenham Hotspur want to play 4-2-3-1 they can play Wayne Rooney as the striker. The left hand midfielder will be Angel Di Maria and the right hand side midfielder will be Nacer Chadli. The midfielder in the middle could be Paulinho but like before it could be Wayne Rooney with Roberto Soldado as a striker. If they have extra cash they could sign someone like Javier Pastore to play in this position, like Oscar plays in attacking midfield for Chelsea.

The double pivot in the middle will be Sandro and Scott Parker or Sandro and Paulinho or Scott Parker and Paulinho. If Scott Parker is injured then the double pivot will be changed so it could be Tom Huddlestone or Gylfi Siggurdson or Dempsey.

Fabio Contreau will be their left back and Kyle Walker will be the right back. Dawson and Vertonghen will be their center backs.

My coaching license taught me about tactics so this is what will happen.

In a 4-3-3 they will counter attack lots. Angel Di Maria and Nacer Chadli will cut in and shoot. These two players will put pressure on the opposition teams left and right backs. Roberto Soldado will be in the middle waiting for crosses or through balls. He will put pressure on the opposition teams central defenders. Because Angel Di Maria and Nacer Chadli will cut in, Fabio Contreau on the left hand side and Kyle walker on the right hand side will get further forward. This is called overlapping. They will cross the ball into the box. Wayne Rooney will have lots of space to himself and will be dangerous. This is known as the trequarista role.

When they play 4-2-3-1 they will be more defensive. This is good against bigger teams. If they go to Anfield or Old Trafford they will do this. There will be more men in midfield which is what they will need to try and pass the ball around. Steven Gerrard, Lucas Leiva, Michael Carrick, Mikel Arteta and other players like them are good at passing and good at stopping passes. Wayne Rooney will drop deep to pick up the ball. There will be fewer chances but Tottenham will be more strong when it comes to defending. Angel Di Maria and Nacer Chadli will be running down the wings and tracking back. Fabio Contreau and Kyle Walker will not be running forwards doing what I spoke about earlier, what is known as overlapping.

Gareth Bale scored a lot of goals and Wayne Rooney has not scored many. When they play these two systems they will do average, so they will beat smaller teams and will draw or lose by just one goal to bigger teams.

They will finish sixth or seventh in the english premier league next season as the other big teams will have more dangerous players.

At least you've learnt how to spell, you've forgot about Dembele though.

A Spurs team according to you(even though I don't see it ever happening):

      --------------Soldado
      Di Maria-----Rooney-------Chadli
      -------Dembele---Paulinho
      Coentrao--Vert--Kaboul--Walker
      ---------------Lloris

On the bench/rotated: Lennon, Siggy, Dempsey, Sandro, Holtby, Ade, Dawson

That team would easily finish top 4, could even challenge for the title

It's an option. Not sure it's the best one though, there must surely be a better GW to use it on as the season wears on. Saying that the current FPL Champion Spidermatt used this tactic last year for the Chelsea/Reading gameweek.

I don't understand why you have Cech and ALL Villa attack. Your expecting Villa to score so why have a Chelsea GK? Surely it would be better to have Mignolet, if you don't believe Stoke have a good attack, and use that extra £1M on one on your defenders for a Chelsea defender. They have a lot more chance of an assist/goal than Cech.

    Oscar vs Lukaku for DGW

Some interesting points raised by #Beavis (http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/comment/5131735)

But post DGW, Oscar is the value bet for price hikes. We know Lukaku will very likely see large-scale sales ahead of GW3 blank, which caps his price hike potential (almost) regardless of his DGW & GW2 scoring - STudge, Bony, Lambo etc options plus poss Rooney (A N Other) signing.

Assuming Oscar starts DGW, he has the potential to match/surpass points tally of either Romelu or Haz, and that could catapult his price even in spite of GW3 blank, as FPL players' confidence in his long-run starting potential gets 'fluffed'.

Ix CHE def, Haz plus one of Lukaku/Oscar looks most sensible start to season for teams, but my money most likely to go on Osca's £8.5m over Romelu's £8m.

I too agree that Oscar could potentially be a better pick than Lukaku for the DGW but there is also Lampard. I think it's simply too early to be making such a call and we will know closer to the start of the season what option would be best after Mourinho has spoken more. Oscar is a very interesting option though.

Anyone know what Spurs back line is likely to be?

      Most likely...

      Walker, Kaboul, Daws, Rose

      However, beware...

      Kaboul fitness still in question,
Verty will be back in on injury recovery (perhaps GW 2),
BAE is far better at LB, but AVB doesn't rate him (I think Rose is well off Prem quality FB)

      Good luck.

Thanks - was looking at a 5m defender and was considering Dawson.

      LLoris

      Walker/ Dawson/ Kaboul/ BAE or Rose

Vertonghen injured, most likely will come in for Dawson... Will be a massive rotation with Dawson and Kaboul + Caulker not to be forgotten

    RMT Draft #7

    Mignolet, Harper
    Luiz, Toure, Alcaraz, Parr, Turner
    Bale, Hazard, Walcott, Silva, Thomas
    Lukaku, Berbatov, Rodriguez

    0.5m

I figured I'd want to play safe with at least one of my strikers and Berbatov is the stand-out candidate for me. He'll start for sure and has penalties in the bag. Lukaku can go in GW 2 or 3 for the rising striker be it Giroud, Sturridge, Aspas, Kone or Negredo (funded by Luiz > cheapest City defender)

    Thoughts?

Yep. Risk I'm willing to take for the start of the season.

Ate you not concerned about Berb if they sign a second striker? Jol looking to play Berb a bit deeper.

This is also a good point with Fulham having apparently bid (or planning to bid) for Darren Bent. This would mean Berba in a more withdrawn position so might not be worth it at 7.5 even with penalty kicks.

I am simply not sure about all these teams which have no stand-out expensive option up front because it means if someone starts firing (Rooney, Aguero or RVP), it would be a struggle to get any of them without having to dismantle your whole team. I like the players you've picked but I am a firm believer in some balance so would rather have someone like Snodgrass/Lallana/Ramirez/BArfa/Nolan and have a slight upgrade on a striker.

    RMT please:

    Mignolet

    Coleman - Collins - Bassong

    Walcott - Hazard (C) - Nolan - Bale

    Sturridge - Lukaku - Lambert

    Subs: Boruc, Clyne, Collins, Chester

Don't know if Sturridge is due to be fit for the first game? Considering downgrading him and upgrading Nolan to Gerrard. Or I may swap him for Giroud (if Arsenal don't sign another striker) or Soldado if Spurs sign him

No one is considering Spurs defense? They got the best fixtures in the opening months

    Kaboul?

I think it'll be Dawson in truth. They'll want to ease Kaboul back in.

But yeah, very much a possibility.

Looks good on paper but they're as leaky as Dear Liza's bucket.

Not for me, too unsettled and no form in pre-season

I think I've created a dilemma for myself, should never have tinkered with my squad.

    A) Bale and Phillips (fodder)
    B) Coutinho and Lukaku

I already have Ivanovic, Hazard and Aspas, but no other Tottenham.
For me this makes total sense if Bale leaves. But how do you think it looks if he stays?
